Your channel, your content, your choice.
It’s funny because sometimes I see videos pop up from you that are on topics I’m less interested in and sometimes I hesitate. But I end up watching anyway because it’s from you and I find I always, always learn something. I’ve even been going back to many of your old videos from before I was a subscriber. It’s been so interesting to see how your content has evolved and how you’ve gained so much confidence over the years.
You’re one of the channels I watch every time you release something. You won’t ever please everyone so take that kind of feedback with a giant grain of salt. I’ve personally really enjoyed seeing what is interesting to you. I like that you do things differently. It’s what sets you apart.

Gabbie Hanna never changes--she simply tries on a new costume that she thinks people will prefer. Currently she thinks moral superiority over her critics can be achieved by pivoting to Christian content. I don't know if you've heard but swearing is demonic, so Gabbie has had to give up her favorite pastime. Any time I thought she's grown or moved past something because she avoids talking about it, she slips and reveals she is incapable of seeing herself in the wrong. The other person in question is even less rational--only a psychiatrist can make sense of whatever that is. Mob mentality is prevalent online because it's filled with chronically online people who can't empathize with those they're seeing through a screen and lack the context of normal human interaction. You have to avoid the subreddits and things (that website is too ugly for me to even follow) because they're filled with people who say you've failed some purity test that they themselves couldn't pass. It seems to come with the territory of your line of work, but don't let the naysayers keep you from making what you want to. You're an educated young woman, and you could probably work in a different field if this ever becomes too overwhelming. I don't know you at all, but I sense that you'll always be successful no matter what. Lindsey Ellis made educational/media criticism content, and she moved completely over to Nebula and became a full-time author. Whatever happens, you'll always be great.

@espifreak Gabbie Hannah might be going through what i went through when i was struggling so much it was dangerous and Christians from various differnet churches convinced me that instead of actual medication and help, god will totally heal me. Christianity can be appealing when, like in my case, all you know is being yelled at and told you're bad at everything, and then Christians come over, they're nice and they say god loves you without conditions. of course, it was harmful and dangerous AF but back then, i saw no better options.

Rachel, my (parasocial) friend: as a fellow autistic, I can absolutely relate to your struggles. It can be so difficult to function and do what everyone expects of you when under attack. I've had my share of bullies in my life as well and can confidently day that the person who is doing this to you is a miserable, self-loathing, life-hating buboe who has decided to make you the victim as you represent everything that they are not and are dead-set on punishing you for it. They would LOVE to see you pack it in as it would mean they've won; don't let them. They've experienced hurt in their own life, I'm sure, but as the saying goes "hurt people hurt people." Causing you distress and inventing enemies to fight provides the illusion of fulfillment to distract from the yawning abyss that is their life. They may have once deserved (indeed, courted) pity, but one day they'll reap what they've sown... hopefully legally. They may have their troll army, but you have hundreds of thousands of us who appreciate your kindness, honesty and courage.

honestly even when you do fundie content you still do a lot of literature review which is still book content in my opinion! that’s one of my favourite things about your content, the literature review and reading recommendations. i’m mostly a fiction reader so i don’t always go looking for non fiction recommendations, but i still feel like including that literature portion elevates you more than typical commentators (nothing wrong with typical commentary, there’s a reason it’s so popular. i just like the variety you offer!)

I've been through similar struggles (catastophising, feeling judged for every small move, legal battles, and more). I still still struggle at times. Rest for success. When you are up for it, remember ACT for anxiety: Some people like you and some don't. You are tremendously successful. You make good choices for yourself based on your values and desires.
When it comes to abusive entrenched people, that is so difficult. You are doing everything you can. My last resort is to remove myself from the equation, which is doing something to give myself more distance, space, and time to process, rest, heal, etc. I know how challenging that is with legal battles. Even when I succeed with my mental health related to it, something outside of my control throws me down hard. Victories come out of the blue it seems. Wishing you well. Hugs.

People can grow and change - those particular two people are just among the group of humans who refuse to do so. Which is why one of them is deservedly getting legal action taken against them by you and I have no doubt that it will end in your favour. That person needs to learn that they can't keep treating people, especially you, like trash in this way.
And Gabbie will get into her own controversies again because she just can't help herself. Maybe one of these days she'll realize that life as an off-line fitness instructor is better than all the drama she keeps creating for herself.
For what it's worth, I enjoy your content no matter if it's books or fundie critique or whatever else. You always bring something valuable to the table, whether that's introducing me to things I hadn't heard of before, bringing a perspective I had not considered before, or just being a pleasant voice in my headphones while I do stuff around the house.
I'm confident that you will get through this tough time and that there's better times ahead for you. It speaks volumes for your character that you're not responding as harshly to the people who attack you as those people talk about you.
Hang in there. This storm will pass.

Something that helps me to not catastrophize when someone doesn't like me (feel free to ignore or not read) is to recognize that I really don't want to be responsible for someone else's likes/dislikes. That's a tooon of pressure and way too exhausting, and also it kind of strips them of their autonomy. And I hate that. It does hurt, but it is comforting for me to look at it like "aw, look at that person exerting their autonomy and expressing themselves. I wish they'd do it more nicely but that's alright, I'll go back to being me now." It also means I can do things to make others comfortable without making it about me wanting to be likeable. If I have space to accommodate someone's comfort, I may do it, and if not, I understand I'm not a monolith who can care for everyone's needs, let own preferences.

Growth and change, however, require some degree of self-awareness, and to acknowledge that you could do better than you have done in the past. From what I've seen, neither Gabbie nor Turd have demonstrated this awareness, being convinced of their own rightness still. I'm a former of you know who. It took them lashing out at me directly to realize how much of a toxic abuser they are. I've tried to leave them in my past so many times now, but they keep showing up again. I lost my patience with them in the most recent controversy they've created. I want them to face who they are, to have to face all their crap.

As a former (very long ago, I was like sixteen) fan of “you know who” I remember looking into the situation with you and being so mad because holy shit she lied about everything so maliciously and primed her viewers to feel like hating you was an expression of progressive values
I hope it’s vindicating that it took like five seconds of research for me to end up talking your side; it really was basically 99.9% lies by volume
Now that I’m older I’m much more aware of the horrific phenomenon of stalkers with a very specific combination of mental illness and personality disorder just obsessively shitting on someone like a one person Kiwi Farms. A lot of Nazis do this, but sometimes there’s also leftists; this is because many people into online politics are often very lonely and get so invested into internet drama that it becomes their whole world and also a metaphorical representation of every bad thing in politics.

I’m so sorry you’re going through a rough mental time, and outside forces aren’t helping much to alleviate some of the pressures, but adding to it in a way.
I cotastriphize (spelling that wrong) the same way, and know how hard it is to try and get yourself out of the pattern while in it, let alone work on how you talk to yourself.
It’s kind of what makes working customer service so hard, especially when they have metrics that the customers give you based on how they experienced it, and that I have the most relatable experience with, my worst was doing tech support, which I love doing the work, it’s just the bad remarks that get to me and fuel the “I’m no good and rotten and not worth much” thoughts.

Your content isn't exactly my type of thing but I've been watching your videos bc I always know you're very intelligent and I like your world views and you're just one of those gentle and kind ppl who put the spark of light to the world so I come to watch your videos from time to time to see how you're doing and listen to your takes on different topics. Also I see a bit of myself in you in many ways. Being sensitive in this way is really hard and you being so open honest and raw is really valuable. In the beginning of this year I felt exactly like you're describing in this video and I went back to the psychiatrist. I didn't want to get back on antidepressants but she told me that there's no point in me feeling worse and worse and bc of that "failing" more and getting even more overwhelmed and depressed. Getting back to meds really helped me to go out of that awful state. I don't know if you're on any meds but if not maybe you could consider that. I'm writing this bc I know I needed someone to tell me something like this those few months ago and that really really helped. I really wish you feel better soon. You're not alone and you are definitely on the right side of things in here.

btw i also have a narcissistic stalker who has a platform with millions of followers and who will harass me whenever there's online drama about me to kick me while im down, or when something good happens to me to steal my shine. narcs will do anything and everything to get attention they desperately need because their sense of worth is so low, they constantly have to start shit to feel something just like gabbie. you've hurt her already weak ego and she literally cannot forget that so she has to bring you down whenever she gets the chance.
also i have legal stuff going on as well and i know it's draining but just know, it'll all pass and eventually they're gonna be the ones who are so unfulfilled with their miserable lives while you're here with this successful youtube channel where you've built an incredible community, living your best life with your boyfriend and your cute dog. youtube would be such a hollow place without you & i've learned and i continue to learn so much from you.

    First time commenting:
If you are someone with an opinion online, there will be someone willing to cr*p on you for it. It can hurt, even if you have thick skin. They don't have to maintain your conviction or level of discourse, either. Some people just sink as low as they want. Sometimes, it's projection as the reason. Other times, they want to give a rebuttal but can't without getting personal. I think people can change, but it depends on many factors... and some don't want to put in effort. Or see anything wrong in thenselves.
I've been a people-pleaser most of my life. I agreed to help anyone with anything (even if it physically hurt me) in order to be the "nice lady." My momma raised me to be kind, and I thought that it was the same thing as nice. When someone would berate me over my beliefs, I thought it was not being kind enough... good enough. I tried so hard to be "good" that I wouldn't defend myself and every personal attack was one I somehow "earned." It's taken me many years to understand that certain people are just fannies (American or English version, your choice). I didn't have to become one, but I had to recognize them for what they were. It's a battle.
Your content is your own. I adore your poetry content (I'm a poet, too) but love your thoughts on so many other topics. I like the connections you make and how well you explain things (I know you worry about it, but thoroughness is a dying aspect of online discourse). If you make content you're passionate about, it speaks to people in a way that going through the motions might not. And it keeps you from burning out faster. I can feel the difference in certain creators when they're taking on what they feel strongly about.
I'm sorry you're depleted. I'm sorry you are dealing with outside negativity. I think your videos are cool. I'm almost housebound due to chronic pain, and finding a new video from you is like seeing a video message from a pal (not in the parasocial way) telling me about something new to distract me from the sensations.
You have every right to feel sad and unsure. You have every right to take a break. But please, don't quit on yourself. No matter what.

I went through a smaller scale, irl version of this kind of experience a few years ago. There is something about people relentlessly calling for your total exile that can make anybody question their worth and belonging. Especially when they frame it as defense of the vulnerable.
It really, really helped me to look into leftist critiques of cancel culture and indentitarianism - it led me to see that not only were these people’s actions cruel and unkind to me and way outweighed any wrong that I could have done by accident, they were also completely antithetical to the goal of creating safety for vulnerable people, which is supposedly the point of these social justice “callouts”.
You feel like shit because someone is treating you like shit. Do you honestly think there is anything, anywhere on your channel, that could reasonably make a person feel as worthless and hurt as these people have made you feel? Because this kind of mental anguish is what arises from experiencing needless cruelty. You haven’t done that to anyone, so you are holding much more than your fair share of the guilt here. Pass that guilt right back to the haters babe. Don’t hold the hot potato.

Oh Rachel. You have... No idea how much I relate to your entire personality, struggles, self esteem, and not internalising the one bad thing against the thousands of good things. The reason why I've just glommed onto you is because of how much I *truly* relate to you, as a person. Not a RUclipsr, but the Rachel Oates who is a woman with a neurodivergent brain, a shitty past, and a love of art/animals, trying to get through life and not let the internet take her confidence down. I see a lot of myself in that and that's why I don't want to try and 'pep talk' this part but rather say: I know. I get it. You're heard, you're seen, and you're absolutely valid for how you feel despite everything.
It's the real content that keeps me staying. The interesting content is always wonderful to watch but it's hard to watch you burn yourself out when what you really need is just a big ol hug :( give yourself space and time to deal with the brain fog. I wish I could have the coil, I have severe pelvic floor dysfunction that would only worsen if I tried it. Idk how legal it is in the UK, but if you evverrrrr want to consider pain relief... The spicy green leaf is what I'm trialling atm. It takes a bit to figure out your body's preferred administration level and method; some people may never find it because of side effects (paranoia being one of them, I do endure heightened anxiety.) But when I do get the right dose on the right day, oh it definitely targets what it's supposed to.
To cap this long comment off, would you ever do a (post hype-train) analysis of His Dark Materials? Phillip Pullman's work just... Holds up so much even to this day, and his method of introducing large topics of deconstruction / deconversion / philosophy / puberty to teenagers just blows me away. And it's acclaimed for the way its atheism tackles the Catholic Church, in a fantasy child-friendly setting :) just an idea!

With people like Paul and Morgan and Girl Defined I get it because those people are actively hurting people. But channels like yours where your content is educational and pretty neutral don't deserve that. Gabbie Hanna sucks. She always has, always will.
I also feel like people are "cancel" happy because they're bored and sad in their own lives. Don't get me wrong, some people needed to be removed from the platform (Gabby actually comes to mind 😂) but then there's the people who will look for any little thing to blow up.

I hope on some level you know that people like shall-not-be-named (both of them) are wrong about you, and are either just truly hateful, spiteful pond-scum, or just projecting a ludicrously skewed image onto you of a demon they can't deal with in their own miserable lives. Or both... Either way, somewhere on an intellectual level, I hope you know that who they portray you as, is not who you are at all. And I know sometimes your brain farts and starts to ponder and makes you doubt yourself and it's just so shi- poopy when that happens, because it takes WAY too much energy and these douche-clowns do not deserve it!
I wish you many MANY better days and SOON ♥♥♥
Because you are a wonderful, intelligent and considerate person and you deserve SO much better.

16:39 people only change if they suffer first. Unless one pays the price, one does not change the attitude. Gabby is an petty angry middle schooler

Oh Rachel, who is telling you that you're not enough? That you're not doing enough book reviews or fundie videos? Who? We all know you. You do not deserve all that crap. You are smart, intelligent, entertaining, fun etc, and this is horrible if this is happening to you. I'm so sorry 😞 😔 xx

I am so disappointed that Gabbie Hanna is attacking you again, I really thought she was getting better :( I wholeheartedly believe that using Gabbie Hanna as your evidence for whether people can change isn't a good idea for you though haha I think there may be other examples of people in your life though I'm of course not sure!! I also think that you're a wonderful person from my interactions with your channel (although this is of course very parasocial) and people on the internet seem to always be looking for reasons to attack others. The right want to put you down for being "too woke" whilst some people in the left seem to be very angry and always attacking others... that's not a reflection on you but those individuals. You are incredible and intelligent and I hope you continue to make the content you are proud of at a pace that is comfortable and safe for you. Remember that you don't need to do everything at once, and like you said, as long as you can pay your bills, definitely think of what your mental health priorities are and try to engage with those more if you can!! Sorry for such a long comment, I hope things get better!!!

4:52 this is awful. I once told people to vote in the American elections and because I didn’t say to not vote for Trump, I was told to kill myself by three different people and was rebounded professionally so I lost support. People are hateful at times with no actual motivation and it sucks.

These people that are hounding you remind me of those toxic K-pop ‘fans’ that drive their idols to suicide.
Next time they bug you you should hit them with the “omg why are you so obsessed with me?” And “fan behavior!” Comments because that’s what they sound like and that’s what I would do to try and change the pattern of my own thinking.

Ooft. This hit. This hit.............. Far too much. Losing Sulli and Goo Hara to public bullying not long after losing Jonghyun to depression+SAD is something I will never feel okay with. What Sulli and GH endured for being women in the spotlight was unfair.

I’m assuming you’re talking about ET when you mention your harasser of 5 years? I genuinely don’t know why they’re still going with this campaign against you but please know that we all support you and they won’t win. You haven’t done anything to them so they can’t keep up this delusion that they have about you. I hope things will get better soon and if you need a break, please take one.
