Disclaimer I’m leaving here for any pissed off Jordan Peterson fans: I try to respond to good faith criticisms when I find the time but if you’re unfamiliar with my channel I usually take a topic or person I find funny/weird/bad and use that as a jumping off point to talk about something else. The bulk of this video is about interrogating the idea of public intellectuals. I didn’t want to make a 2 hour video and so lots of my specific criticisms of Jordan Peterson are somewhat simplified. Feel free to still leave a comment if you’d like but understand that I chose not to talk in depth about things like Bill C-16 because that’s not what this video’s about. If surface level critiques of JBP upset you you can just skip to 15:33 to get to the meat of my argument. Don’t forget to own the libs by liking, commenting, subscribing, and becoming a patron.
You gotta pin this. Jordan Peterson fans won't be scrolling this far down in the comments. They don't like doing that much reading.

@@WereInHell You know, around the time he first rose to prominence, I was playing with this weird idea that people with crowded bottom teeth are more likely to be dealing with a lot of internal stress, anxiety, and eventually madness. I'm not one of those "teeth judging" types at all, I just happen to have insane bottom row crowding that keeps getting worse. So, I'm saying all this to you because of your interest in conspiracy theories, and I'd like some sort of rating on the insanity of my notion, if you have the time.

We have a similar professor in biological faculty in Saint Petersburg state university, where I study and work - very charismatic and popular, lectures are interesting, but he has very troubling ideas, in a way his ideas are very similar to Peterson, maybe he even watched the latter's videos - I would not be surprised. Now when I analyse what that professor said when I was an undergrad and attended his lectures, I realize he totally is a sexist, racist, homophobic reactionary POS, his interesting manner of presentation just blinds the students so much. Although I didn't like him even back then, cause I was already childfree, and he constantly said stupid bingo nonsense about how everyone should breed
"Poverty has a lot of causes... for example, a lack of money." An intellectual take indeed.
"for example"
Well... it maybe a "sudden lack of money", could be an "unanticipated lack of money" or just a "considerable lack of money", such a profound take...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
/sarcasm
I immediately saw how stupid that was: Lack of money isn't the cause of poverty, it's the definition. Peterson has a severe sophistry problem while passing himself off as a refined intellect and making obscene amounts of money for it.
who'd have thought? what an intellectual genius.
i read that as 'poetry has a lot of causes' and honestly, yeah
"lesbian in her sexual preference" is how I'm going to start introducing myself
in 3rd person?
You are BRILLIANT! I love it.
Pious in the streets
Lesbian in her sexual preference in the sheets
So Peterson's critique isn't that he doesn't like lesbians, it's that he feels they should only be represented in positions of power proportionally to their population density? A lesbian shouldn't be able to organize well enough to get a position of power because they represent less than 4% of the population or something? At least that's the excuse he's hiding behind?
@@joeymac4302 Yeah it seems that way.
And underneath it he seem to be having as a premise that people from minority groups cannot think outside of their narrow group-interests, but HIS group of intellectuals don't represent ANY particular interests, just pure objectivity .... so that's nice, I guess :)
.. It must be "nice" to be so full of yourself! ;(
He had a strong muppet voice that women couldn’t understand and men adored
i'm a cishet man. his muppet voice annoys me to no end. also, he's virtually unknown in Asia.
If ever two souls could hi-five through the internet I believe we have.
@Lucien Hicks It's well above that now, so you can come back and like it.
As a nonbinary person his muppet voice does not make me understand nor make me confused
it makes me angry
For some reason, I can't stop trying to make it fit the tune of Rasputin
He had a muppet voice that women didn't understand
But in western men he found such adoring fans?
As someone from South West England, it's Peterson's hatred of cider which offends me most.
Unfortunately it pairs poorly with beef. Who knew?
That monster
this anti-cider hate speech and fear mongering will not stand
What makes it worse is that he probably meant non-alcoholic cider
I assumed he meant apple cider vinegar that he was chugging.

@@mjf8897 maybe was kinda like a compliment for a n30 n4z1
That time Peterson just hand-waved away an entire ideology with "I read the communist manifesto". If a student tried to pull that one on their professor...
I think what made Peterson appealing to so many young men on the internet is that he's like an internet troll come to life. Shapiro has the same appeal. These are characters with little interest in integrity, finding the right answer, or coming to a common understanding whether it benefits them in the short-term or not, but to win at any cost. And why wouldn't this strategy make them thought-leaders and propel them into stardom? That behavior is exactly what our infrastructure selects for. It's capitalism applied to human interaction itself.
I did, because that professor made me. It sucked
@@rasputozen dude, how the hell where you able to come up with all that bullshit without having any idea what you are talking about is beyond me. Peterson view has always been clear and concrete, he never changed his position to benefit him in a debate and has been most respectful to his opponents each time. It is why someone like him could get a long with Zizek, who is on the complete opposite political spectrum. I don't know how people like you can so shamelessly make up opponents in your minds.
@@OntologicalCatastrophe Maybe Peterson doesn't change positions to win a debate, be he sure as hell does some underhanded things. For example, his debate with Matt Dillahunty. When Dillahunty asked him if he was a Christian, Peterson wanted to change the definition of Christian before he answered the question! Then, he connects an outrageous, indefensible idea with a more reasonable one so that if he is called out on the outrageous idea, he can defend the more reasonable one instead and look like he won that point. It's called the "Motte and Bailey" fallacy. There is also some circular logic going on. Peterson made the statement, I believe with Dillahunty, that Atheists cannot be artists because all art is inspired by religion. Dillahunty replied that he knew Atheist artists, and Peterson responded with (to paraphrase), "They must not be Atheists, then!". I have heard Peterson say " Gotcha!" in a debate which is just childish. He utilizes "word salads" as a defense, too. I don't think that Peterson enters into debates in good faith, and watching him in a debate is like experiencing fingernails on a chalkboard. ~ Anastacia in Cleveland
@@AnastaciaInCleveland I wouldn't call answering a religious question underhanded. One answers how one answers. It's fucking religion, you know? Mostly a product of pure imagination. Can this possibly be news to you?

He is exactly the type of professor I’d have thought was amazing in my first year of university. By year 2 I’d have got off the bandwagon.
I know this as I had one such professor. He took my rejection of his classes ( I didn’t take any) personally. He invited me to his study, we talked, I tried to lie my way out “ oh no I just had conflicts,/ want to do other classes.”
I lied , and so he offered to moved his class that I was to ‘ absolutely’ take. He spent sometime pitching his classes over the ones I’d chosen.
I crumpled, “ I’m very sorry but I find you a touch too eccentric for me. I have issues concentrating, and as this is about next year, I really don’t want to fail.”
“ interesting that you would lie to save my feelings. I am here to help all students but you are not special. You mean nothing to me. You can leave.”

I was a student in two of JBP’s classes in U of T in the days before social media. He always had a self-serious charisma in those days, although even then you could kind of question a lot of his ideological preferences (e.g. his believe in the superiority of British culture , which is an odd thing to just put out there in a psychology class)...I’m convinced Twitter destroyed him and helped him indulge in the worst aspects of his need to position himself as and early 21st century messiah sent to save Western civilization.
You were a student of his? My condolences.
Thankfully, he's now leaving Twitter. Good riddance.
So he is not a scientist? A clinical psychologist who thinks a certain culture is superior certainly isn’t.

the problem is not having CERTAIN people with the role of being those we listen to and trust them more than others.
the problem is that people don´t have the cognitive tools to listen and then look into the topic themselves INSTEAD of only listening and being convinced.
@FilthyDankWastemanFabuless I did not talk about myself, so dont blame me for supposedly portraying myself as cleverer than others, I did no such thing.
And "of course x!" is no convincing argument for x.
many people are not capable of understanding certain topics without MUCH effort and concentration. for most people, that is the case with maths.
for many, it already starts with politics.
and yes, being told to use stuff - you might describe it like that, but if someone is never told about the concepts like "confirmation bias" or "falsifiability", then they lack a cognitive tool, which, if they had it, could probably be enough for them to think for themselves "well, i SHOULD listen more to the opinions i have so far just regarded as obvious bs, because this might stem from my confirmation bias" (maybe not a perfect example, but i guess you get the idea)

Recognising your correct use of "begs the question" made me feel like a public intellectual. Also I like the way you say Hoouse.
Also, I think your conclusion and the questions you end up with are really important. Outstanding video and perspective, thanks.
Okay but whoever wrote that end credits song, I love you
Ah, you claim to be against capitalism, but you have purchased chinese puzzle boxes. I am now a public intellectual.
I've been hearing about the crushing stupidity of 12 Rules For Life for so long, and just learned now that it was all based on a Quora post, and it's kind of a relief. Like when you're in middle school and you realize that a teacher yelling at you actually has no real power. Like, he was never anything to take seriously to begin with.
listening to Peterson for 5 mins makes me roll my eyes. IDK how anyone not already in agreement with him can handle listening at all.
Real, genuine question: does Jordan Peterson know what “postmodern” means?
He’s a father figure to people who sadly do not know nor have experienced what a real one that loves and cares for you is truly like, which due to the nasty side of dangerous masculine toxicity (not that masculinity or any target itself is the source but that it’s corrosively toxicified the good virtues of any of those potential attributes) has been the cause of many bad or lacking fathers throughout the ages to begin with.
he gives me punished big joel vibes. big chaotic neutral vibes
The song at the end was worth the wait
This channel is kicking off so much and I am so fucking happy about it.
Just imagine crying because you can't legally harass someone anymore.
I remember seeing his very one sided "conversation" with Camille Paglia. The first thing to come to mind was, "Oh cool! Any Rand's right brain and Julius Evola's left brain together at last! "
This video freaked me out. I was checking out the cat statue in the background and there was an immediate close up as if I had requested it.
Happy you mentioned Cass Eris as she has an absolutely brilliant series on Jordan Peterson's book! She's starting a new series on his second book which I think people should check out as well, btw great vid
That end credits song. Bravo!
Listening to Mia reading those quotes from his book feels like a fever dream
10:20 Addiction is an illness not a personal failure, but believing you can lecture the world on how to successfully live life when you yourself haven't mastered it is absolutely a character flaw that should be mocked.
The song at the end is pure gold
AT LONG LAST. PART 2. Previous episode for lobster daddy, this channel was still a Black Goat.
how tf did Peterson get a room full of applause for cutting education funding? also my go-to thing would be decreasing college football coaches salaries, not removing departments because you personally don't like them.
I appreciate you for including my favorite postmodernist drivel
I’ve listened to the song at the end seven times in a row. I love it so much.
There’s something that makes me cringe deep in my soul when I see Jordan Peterson on Tucker Carlson’s show.
You, know for me? I thinks it's the fact that they are both idiots who peddle propaganda.
RUclips needs to add a second like button so I can like this video more
Like the weird Medium. Clap thingy 😎😀
