    Lesley is such a voice for common sense. She’s now a bit marginalised and that’s such a shame for us. The BBC dumped her for Fred Mac Cauley years ago under Labour’s Jack McConnels Labour regime. It was the dumbing down of BBC Scotland, probably due to her running rings round Labour MPs and MSPs of the time. She’s a real force to be reckoned with and she was holding them to account more than they could cope with. The real hero for Scotland. I just wish the Mainstream media would put her back where she belongs, At the top of the pile.

    Great discussion as usual, Iceland is great, been there too, driving right around the island.
    The power companies here certainly need reform, they are using the Scottish population as cash cows..

    Same as in North Norway - the houses are extremely well insulated, with triple glazing as standard. Winter - the houses were a sweltering 25 degrees! Their electricity price in the north area is extremely low - a few pence per kwh! The North has the lowest kwh price, as they have the least amount of light in the winter.

    Oh, it's not just old tenements that will be affected. I have these complex meters (because I had overnight storage heaters, which I have never used) - and I live in a modern flat which was built in 2007. Sole space & water heating is via electricity.
    The complex meter system makes it extremely difficult to change electricity supplier, so we're penalised yet again because we cannot shop around to have cheaper electricity, nor cheaper gas (no gas allowed in these flats), and we cannot have cheaper rates depending on when we use the general electricity like those who now have smart meters and opt for using electricity at non-peak times to get a lower price.
    I live in central Scotland, not in a remote area, and my flat overlooks the River Forth. We could very easily have a communal heat transfer system from the river, but we are at the mercy of inept local councils, intransigent energy companies and not being an independent country in charge of our own energy affairs.

    not quite right, but close enough on AMOC. one of the problems though with what u said is in the consequences, in particular the change in rain patterns that would affect some far away places. The problem is that - as you also rightly point out - it is a planetary issue, but on the point of rains, according to leading climate scientist Tim Lenton's research, Britain would experience droughts that would render the island uninhabitable. I'm most shocked that uv never heard about this. I've known about it since the 90s.
    And on Salmond, it ought to be pointed out that Salmond was in favour of carbon capture to exploit the oil in the north sea. He wasn't at all an advocate of anything that is required to mitigate this crisis we are very much in the middle of, and which has no solution. Not even a "green transition" can solve the issue because there is already - at the very least - 70ppm too much co2 in the atmosphere, which needs to be drawn down to deal with the planet's energy imbalance. Then that doesn't consider the 350+ zeta joules of excess energy that the ocean system has absorbed.
    Alba are completely committed to continuing the systems that are causing this issue in the first place. They have no word on climate whatsoever. In fact, there is no party at all, including Greens, advocating the systemic change that is required.
    I've never agreed to have a smart meter. Just like ur aye phone, and everything else, these are about collecting data on people to build profiles and use them against you.

    if u have an aye phone 16 u have a supercharged surveillance system on you at all times, profiling you and sending your info to external servers

    Had my eyes rolling at the faux concern about climate change. I like the podcast but I'm pretty sure that with all the flying you both do, you're part of the continued emissions problem. I'd be interested to know how your carbon footprints compare to the global average.

      that's quite a poor argument. the problem is systemic, and we all participate in the system. some of us try to change the system. some think they "just have to get on with it". your point individualises responsibility and ignores the causes.

      @@abody499 I don't like hypocrisy, that's got nothing to do with whether individuals or systems need to change behaviour. If all individuals stopped flying due to the high emissions, the aviation industry would quickly change. When people go "oh, no human caused change is terrible" but continue to fly and eat lots of animal products, I can't take them seriously.

    • @abody499
      @abody499 2 дня назад

      it's not hypocrisy at all. this is all about a systemic problem. everything everyone does is reproduction of the top down structures they internalise from day dot. did u not even notice the level of understanding and awareness of the amoc problem?? it's just not there - these people, like the vast majority, have no idea about these things because the system makes sure of it. No one is changing anything by focusing on their own individual behaviour.

      @abody499 2 дня назад

      i'm listening now to an argument being made for economic growth. no one has a clue. all of these structures are internalised to the point of being perceived as the fundamental norm. a complete overhaul in ways of thinking is required, and that has to be a top down programme, but while the top want the status quo, forget it. we're finished.
