I love Rush, but it's easier to be cool, grounded, and sharp when you've been wealthy since you were young. When you've done nothing but work all your life, made little money, and are cranky and exhausted from it, you're going to be more arrogant about it. DISCLAIMER: I love Rush.
Geddy says; "I'm just a musician". Only one of the greatest musicians of our time! He's so down to earth! He made eye contact with me at a show. I was in the 3rd row and he smiled at me because I was smiling so huge I couldn't wipe it off if I tried. That was a moment I will always have. I know Alex said he doesn't really get recognized much and Neil, I'm not sure of but my gosh, they're both as down to earth as anyone could be. I love these guys and still remember where I was and what I was doing when I found out Neil had passed. RIP Neil Peart.
I was also 3rd row on Ged's side at a R30 show and was singing away to Subdivisions and opened my eyes to see Ged looking at me (I'm really tall and naturally everyone was standing). Got a brief smile from him due to being so into it I'm sure.
@@bigmike4962A moment in time neither of us will forget! AND, They get to see how much we appreciate the talent so much that we are singing with them! I'm smiling right now! Glad you had that experience!
Like everything else about Rush...this shows them obliterating the rockstar stereotypes. Golfing? Collecting baseballs? Riding a bicycle? It's usually about groupies, drugs, etc. Such impressive, well-rounded and kind people.
I saw an interview with Alice Cooper talking about touring with Mick Jagger. He was asked about the after parties, and Cooper said if you consider sitting around drinking Earl Grey discussing golf slices, a wild time, then we were right on it.
You might find the hobbies of the members of Iron Maiden quite interesting. Golf to Fencing and everything in between. Mostly proper Englishmen who happen to play Metal shows for a living.
Just being cool all the time gets boring when you aspire to a life of substance. Life in general (in addition to music) seems to be something the guys in Rush did well.
Imagine stopping at an out-of-the-way gas station, and he's gassing up his bike, and you start talking, and it lasts a half hour. That would be a heck of a life memory.
The more I learn about Rush, the more unique they become and the more I love them. The other rock idols I love are terrific musicians, but they are so unapproachable. I just like Rush as people. They have every reason to be arrogant, yet they are not. Those are the types of people I welcome into my own life. Thank you Rush for living your unlikely dream so we could all enjoy the fruits of your labor.
The way NP speaks about solitude and freedom from others is how i have felt for quite some time. When he said “ no one knows where i am” with joy in his voice pretty much sums up my feelings. All this time I thought there was something wrong with me. Thanks NP
Geddy Lee stated that reporters found them boring!😂 but not their music! So glad I saw them back in like '02-03 I think? Awesome show of course. It was July 4th in North Carolina. Geddy said "we are the Canadians here to play on ur Birthday America!" 😂 I luv Rush! Rip Neil.
Three of the greatest musicians ever to play. Ever. Neil’s lyrics are the most beautiful and intelligent ever written as well. RIP Professor. We miss you.
I did live the life of a professional musician for a few years. Nothing remotely on the scale of Rush of course, but certainly one that afforded me countless opportunities for the life that the average "Rocker" on tour lives. I indulged a little bit in the women and the alcohol and partying (never got into any drugs). What I found was that after a pretty short period, it got really old. Even for a guy in his 20s. Waking up next to a stranger after a third or fourth straight night of drinking to excess just felt empty. I had enough judgement and maturity to get out of that life pretty quickly. I am proud to say that I ended up spending most of my time off reading, drumming, or exploring the cities. That was incredibly fulfilling. Looking back, I wish I had the forethought to go to the next level like these guys did. Although I had none of those resources, so it wouldn't have been quite as feasible, but still I fantasize about that. These men are truly extraordinary.
It makes me wonder what a lot of these musicians do when they’re not performing? Do you guys rehearse, do media appearances, etc. or is it more your own time to do as you please?
Alex mentioned the idea that they are battling boredom, which I feel is where so many musicians go wrong. So many musicians resort to alcohol and drugs to cope with this boredom. I think all three of them have found the best way to deal with this, which makes them even more amazing and inspiring.
I met Geddy twice just out and around. Didn't talk about music or even acknowledged that he's world famous. Just a guy in line at the grocery store one day and a few years before at the national park.

It's amazing because I could have run into Alex Lifeson 100 times on a golf course, and I would probably assume that he was a stockbroker or banker every single time I saw him. I've never seen him in his golf get up, and it is so foreign to me I wouldn't have put two and two together. Legend. All three of them.
