43 year old dad in the UK here and I remember being a teen when the Dunblane massacre happened here and the shock and the revulsion and the horror and pain we shared collectively. And then the immediate action which stopped it happening again. There's still violence and our young people in cities have to deal with the threat of knife violence. Indeed, this week I've been reading of a case of some deranged attacker on the subway with a machete; there's footage on RUclips. It's horrific how he targeted a random stranger. Lives were changed in that case, but no-one died despite dozens being contained in the carriage during that flash of aggression. Had he had a gun...
Like Corden, I don't see America changing. It's not like people don't know what needs to be done. It's a choice. And to be frank, it's consistent. The lawmakers who would force a rape victim to go through with a pregnancy because they abhor abortion. The politicians who think nothing of families paying hundreds of dollars for basic medication that we get for free in the UK. The companies who pressurise staff not to take annual leave (the only developed country not to give a right to time off). States that still murder its citizens as a punishment for certain crimes. It is consistent that this country puts macho gun ownership above the peace of families, and above the lives of children. Number one cause of child death in America - absence of compassion.

I’m in the U.K. pal, but I have to pay for my (sub par) medication through taxes and National Insurance, as does everyone I know. Abortion is legal everywhere in the US, so why lie about that? Very strange. Also, do you understand what it is to be a citizen in a republic? They are sovereign, unlike here where the Queen is sovereign and we are subjects. To be sovereign, you have to have the power, therefore you need the tools for power. Why criticise what you don’t understand? To virtue signal. ‘Yeah, I’m super nice because I’m against the brutal murder of children, but I’m not above using their deaths to make me feel good about myself by telling everyone how good I am. Please, just don’t do that. It’s weak af.

    • @vladimirimp
      @vladimirimp Год назад +12

@@Dude0000 Hello. I can answer your points. Our medicine is not sub-par. My wife is in pharma medical research and the opposite would seem to be true. Yes, we pay for national insurance, but whether or not we pay for it, our medicine is free or capped at £10. Compare that with a $100 asthma inhaler or $2.5k for a broken arm.
Yes, I understand the difference between a republic and a constitutional monarchy, but you need to connect the dots for me between my points about the US and this. Because there are other republics that don't have the same values as the USA.
I didn't say abortion was illegal so I didn't lie. I'll quote myself 'The lawmakers who would force a rape victim to go through with a pregnancy because they abhor abortion'. When I say 'who would' I'm capturing a desire to change - do you not see that? It's pretty common knowledge so if you don't know then do some research including how access to abortion has been made more difficult.
Lastly it doesn't make me feel any better about myself talking about this subject. I find it a strange accusation but I suppose it might succeed in getting opponents to shut up if you don't want to hear their arguments. Change happens when people make their voices heard.

But simply, for the fact that they are human beings alone like you and I, you naturally or instantly relate thus, the grief. It’s just very sad to see a country like America, which the rest of the world adore and admire for their works and many opportunities yet, is far back on something so fundamental as this🤦🏾‍♂️…just as James said. We are not machines nor are we some algorithm bound by certain set of rules as to how to respond to situations. Machines do not have instincts, empathy, ‘conscience’ and many other qualities we human beings possess. Which is why on the other hand,in order to solve these problems we need to think like human beings and not machines because situations like these are relatable. If only we are able to grasp this simple concept, many issues in America can be solved including discrimination and race related issues. Then America and world would truly be great. Hey James ...thank you for the kind words and prayers. I am from Uvalde and we are heart broken....sad.... hurt....and don't know what to do!
I did not have anyone of my family hurt in this tragedy but we are a small town. We are all affected as is everyone else in the world. I can't talk about this to anyone because you cry...yup we are crying and feel so bad. We wanted much more for these kids but the reality is we failed. They will be forever 9 and 8 years old children who we failed.
May we hug our kids a little bit harder tonight and thank those teachers who do what they do for our children, as these teachers did for ours. Hugs and prayers from Uvalde Texas!

It would be better if I was angry about it, but that was my initial feeling when I first started hearing about it, so the lack of emotion is really telling and it’s kind of scary. So well spoken James. Coming from Sweden where school shootings is so far from our community, it breaks my heart to see that the supposedly most influential country in the world, fails to recognize and understand what their gun laws does to a community. As I dropped my 7-year old son off at school today, and looked on the calm surroundings his school is located in, I cannot even begin to comprehend how politicians think it is ok that these children who survived the school shooting, will now live in constant fear, and will be scarred for life, and will never be able to think back of their time in primary school as a time of joy and playing with friends. Instead they will be haunted by the memory of seeing their 7-year old classmates being shot and killed right in front of their eyes!! Nowhere else in the world does this happen, so how can the United States of America fail to see what they have become....a nation that when you drop your child off at school, in the back of your mind, you migh think, is this the last time I will see my child alive?

Agree with all of that. Here in Australia we had a shooting massacre in the ‘90’s that shocked & horrified everyone. The government acted swiftly & banned all automatic & semi-automatic weapons & tightened the laws re gun ownership in general. A very popular & commonsense ruling. It worked here, but sadly, will never happen in the US. Their devotion to firearms is entrenched in their constitution. It’s hopeless.

For American fans watching this I thought it would be worth explaining that James come from a generation and country where we saw a mass shooting in a primary school in Dunblane in Scotland in 1996. It was the deadliest mass shooting in British history. 16 children and a teacher killed. Another 15 injured. The name Dunblane is etched in our memories. Even people who weren't born then know the name. For those at school then it became the thing of our nightmares.
The government immediately responded to tighten gun laws, to the point that it is now very rare for anyone to legally own guns, or be killed by guns in the UK. Hunting is still permitted, but often clubs will store the guns rather than have them held in personal residences.
There hasn't been a mass shooting in the UK since.
Parents in the UK send their children to school without the fear they may not return. Teachers work in environments where they feel safe and worry about drugs and smoking, not hiding from killers.
It is very hard for us to comprehend that mass shootings are so frequent they rarely make the news, and that no one is willing to do anything to change it.

But don't y'all make up the majority of knives violence in the world as in knives have replaced guns.
Also as an American you can look at the history and founding of the US to understand why guns are a founding cultural thing in the nation like freedom of expression and beliefs cause the British where hindering that.
A majority if not all the founding articles are based off things the British did that the colonist didn't want the new government to do to them.
Like it's illegal for military personal to enter and use your home without permission because the British army was doing that without the colonist consent.
Without guns we'd still be under the British who were abusing the colonist.
I know the US history is but a blip in British history but still research.
Also fun fact in the US Constitution it is legal to overthrow the government and replace it if the people feel it no longer serves or represents there wills or wishes again because of the history with the British.

@@solisprime2669 the UK doesn't even make the Top 20 for Knife related homicides in the world (percentage of population). Nor does it make the top 10 with the most stabbing deaths (source UN Office of statistics).
In North America firearms deaths were responsible for 76% of all homicides. Knife related homicides were less than 20%. In Europe guns account for less than 20% of homicides and knives 40%. (Source as above).
Stabbings tend to have less victims as they involve close contact between attacker and victim. Guns can kill from a distance and many more hurt in one attack.
You can look at American history and say there is a justification for slavery too. But I think we have all moved on from that. Certainly Britain abolished slavery long before America.
Without guns our wars would be fought with bow and arrows, or missiles. Depends on the advancement of the people at war and the time the war took place. But surely we can agree that things have moved on since 1776, and our schools have no reason for guns at all?

British African slavery 1698 to 1807 that is 109 of African slavery American 1776 to 1865 so 89 years of slavery so ended it in a shorter time then the biggest empire of the time.

However, I really didn't give it much thought until I was in sixth grade and the shooting at Virginia Tech occurred in 2007. Suddenly, I had a rather mild fear that my school would be shot up. These fears came to the forefront when I heard about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut during my senior year. That was the first time I cried over the loss of young children who had so much ahead of them in life. The second time I have cried over the loss of young children was after I heard that seven children lost their lives at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Oklahoma during the EF5 tornado that hit Moore on May 20th, 2013 and the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas was the third time. Though because I work at my local hospital; the shooting at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma hit particularly close to home. Shootings at hospitals, nursing homes, and doctors offices are practically unheard of in the United States to the point where hospital employees have a mindset of "something like that can't happen." Let's be honest: these shootings are not even a surprise anymore. I'm not from the US nor do I live there, so shootings like this are so far out of my day to day life, but I read about them all the time. And so, even though my heart goes out for the poor kids and the families, my head sometimes just shrugs and thinks that this is just another one. One more on the list. Nothing special.
And it is extremely sad that such horrendous events became somewhat normality.
So I beg the people from the US: do something against weapons. Do something against this madness. This should never, NEVER be normality. Its your children that are dying. 18 more unnecessary deaths. 18 more children who couldn't fulfil their dreams.
The solution is not more guns. All the other countries don't have this enormous problem. Do they have more guns? Do all people in Germany, France, Sweden, Japan, India, Australia... run around armed till under their teeth? NO! They simply have very strict regulations. The causality is very clear. More guns=more people getting shot. Less guns=less people getting shot.
    So please, end this.

212 mass shootings so far this year?! I can't... I mean... that's unbelievable. That equates to a mass shooting almost every 8 hours!
How anyone can justify gun laws is beyond me. This is so sad and tragic and I just can't imagine what it must be like to live in the US knowing this.

I can not stop crying .. my heart hears only the screams of parents from Texas and far to many other places in this country .. why do we allow this to continue ? No other country has these stats .. surely we can learn from them ? It’s not lack of plausible working theories .. it’s greed and power plain and simple we trade our kids for political clout and power in DC .. shame on us all for accepting this as normal 😔
