  • Jimmy responds to the tragic school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and talks about 89% of Americans wanting background checks, our cowardly leaders listening to the NRA instead of the people they actually represent, firearms becoming the #1 leading cause of death for American children and teens, Ted Cruz speaking at an NRA event this weekend, the 27 school shootings so far this year in America, and making sure that lawmakers do something about common-sense gun laws. I'm a teacher in Austria and because of news like this, some kids (not many, just a few) have asked me whether we were going to have panic buttons or active shooter drills and the idea absolutely terrifies me. I always tell them that it would be one of the saddest days if we ever needed those things at our schools...

    • @MaiCohWolf
      @MaiCohWolf Год назад +94

      I live in the US. I saw a news special recently about a high school that spent $400,000 on panic buttons for all the teachers, speakers and cameras in every hallway that broadcast straight to the police dept., ballistic glass for the windows, and even smoke screens that rain down from the ceilings. The news report acknowledged that it was expensive and not every school would be able to afford it, but touted it as "a potential solution," reminding audiences that many schools spend even more on sports programs. I'm so ashamed of my country.

So terrifying so enraging! They shouldn’t have waited so long and it breaks my heart for all the teachers and little kids who lost their life. Now the survivors will have this memory forever. So heartbreaking. Hearing a little kid describe an adult situation is so sad. They don’t know that the Gunman was evil. You know? Their so innocent. I wish these kids nothing but true happiness who survived. It’s not fair that they witnessed true evil.

    This was the most erudite and heart felt response to the shootings in Uvalde. As a Brit who was around when Dunblane, Scotland happened in 1986 and Hungerford in 1987, I was sickened by the effect of irreverent and lax use of the gun laws in our country. But no right-minded, sane and compassionate individual person would every feel that tightening gun laws in this country was not the right thing to do.
    The USA is, in the eye of the WORLD, so backward in it's ideology. It aspires to greatness, to be the beacon for every country to follow, but how far it falls short in this one simple position. It's politicians would rather see children and teachers brutally killed than have the courage to wield a pen to stop this insanity. Basing a whole political ideology on a 230+ year old document that includes an AMENDMENT to its original constitution just seems, to the sane first world countries, as simply bizarre. Should we, as Britain's, rely on the doctrine of the Magna Carta of 1215, to define all of our underlying laws and principles? Hell no. We evolve, we move our democracies forward and we hope to become something better than our predecessors.
    Jimmy, I was humbled by your oratory. Thankfully there is some flickering of belief that people, wherever they are from, have the compassion to be a friend unto friend. Unfortunately the political agenda in the US is influenced by too many specialist groups that aim to distort the original OVER-RIDING ethos of your founding fathers.

      -This isn't Afghanistan and I must have missed the news articles about all the mass shootings in Vietnam. I love this mentality that some people have that they constantly need to be strapped to defend themselves. Like, who do you think you are? Who's out to get you exactly? You're NOT that important. There aren't gangs of people waiting around every corner to attack you.
      -And that's incredibly stupid. If kids that age can't be trusted with a Bud Light then they shouldn't be trusted with deadly weapons.
      -This country's laws about weapons clearly aren't working since this problem is older than I am (and I was born in the 1980s) and only seems to be getting worse. We can't just keep doing absolutely nothing and trodding out the same tired 'thoughts & prayers'.

      It's a gun problem can't have mass shootings without the guns. There are people inc kids mental health issues across the world, other countries have it a lot worse imaginr their mental health. Yet you don't see nowhere near as many school shootings anywhere in the world not even remotely close. Because nowhere else can you buy guns like the US. The texas governer literally called for more people to get guns because they were 2nd to California, age was also reduced 21 to 18, and he boasted about not needing a license or training.

      Unfortunately it will not happen anytime soon. We grieve, we get angry, we demand, & then slowly start to forget. Until the next tragedy happens, & more lives are taken. It’s a none sense, never ending circle. While the adults debate, our children are being murdered. I saw plenty of comments of gun enthusiasts. Who incredulously got defensive right away. At people who called the weapons this monster used, “assault riffles”. Those are the people that stand in the way of change. What the hell does it matter what they are called. In the end they all do the same thing, when in the hands of a distorted mind. I’m honestly deeply disheartened, & loosing faith, that things will ever change.

    As an indian, who have never even seen or heard how a gun sounds in his entire life. This is truly devastating. This tragedy brought me to tears. Unfortunately these incidences are all too common in the US because of how easily and readily guns are made available to the general public.
    In my country, you have to undergo several trainings and assessment in order to get a legal gun. You also need to draft an essay showcasing your need for a gun.
    These are very preventable tragedies if only your leaders would listen.
    Also, Ted cruz is a moron.

      Mayank Singh, I’m sure he sends his kids to a private school with protection for them so nothing will happen to them. Unfortunately America dosent have the money or want to spend more money for the protection of the kids and teachers. Well they want the teachers to pay for their own guns and training. That’s not what they went to school for. I’m sure one day when the go to school it will be mandatory to take self defense and classes cops take for self defense.
