It’s kinda ironic that rum producers filter the color out of white rum but add caramel to color dark ones haha
"funk" seems to be the rum equivalent of Peat in Whisky
Love the thumbnail 🇯🇲 big up
My 3 pick for Jamaican rums would be Pleneray Xymaca, Appleton 12 and Smith and Cross traditional pot still. I can't get Hamilton in Maine (USA) or that would be on this list in place of Smith and Cross.
Great content! 😊
Nice my favorite is the Appleton 12
In Jamaica I came across Appleton Overproof unaged white rum. Extremely potent, it was at the time sold only locally. Tropical esters with a strong scent of cane or molasses. I brought some home as a novelty and enjoyed it quite a bit. For a fuel-strength spirit it was surprisingly drinkable. No, not recommended for for the new rum fan, but not to be missed if you ever come across it. In Jamaica it was dirt cheap.
I’m pretty new to the rum game but I’m loving the Hamilton Jamaican black pot still rum
Dr. Bird for the win!
For beginners, I always say dive off the deep end! Try Two James' Dr. Bird Rum. It's as funky as you could want.
Rum Fire is pretty good drink too.
Hello Steve. I really like Jamaican rums. I haven't tested them all, I had to name 3: Hampden estate 46, Worthy Park single estate 45, Rum Bar overproof And as a bonus Worthy Park Forsyths Velier 57 but for people who would discover Jamaican rums, Appleton because less marked in flavor and easier to drink. Santé 🍸
Cheers Phil. Great Rums there. And bang on with Appleton for beginners 👌
Hey Steve! Do you have a video ranking sipping rums from the price you like to stay with? I'm thinking Real McCoy 12 , Diplomatico, Zacapa, and of course El Dorado for you haha! Keep up the great work!
Check out my Reviews channel. I’ve done the Diplo and EDs. But there’s a lot of Tastings over there.
Great introduction to Jamaican rum Steve. I am very new to all this and I have the Appleton signature that I enjoy with ginger ale.The Appleton 8 is next on my list to get. Along with the Wray and Nephew.
Quick question. How does a stainless steel still taste different to a Copper still and why,?
So a distiller will give you a much more geeky answer. And of course, every Distiller will also have their own opinions. Some prefer Copper. Some Steel. Some prefer Pot, some prefer Column. Some Hybrids. There is ultimately no right or wrong as we all love different types of Rum. HOWEVER...from a scientific POV, we are lead to believe that Copper reacts better (or worse depending on view point) with the Sulphars in Alcohol. Some will tell you its worse because it can give you bad hangovers and leave you with more "nasty" stuff in your Rum. Others will tell you it's better becasue it promotes a better Taste in the final product. All's i know is that, when you have a good Distiller, there is no mistaking a Copper Pot Still Rum on the Aroma and Taste. It's so unique. Funk is not the right word. Nor is Musty. But once you get it, you'll know.
@Steve the Barman Thank you, That makes sense. So what Jamaican copper pot still rum would you recommend for a beginner.so I can learn what they taste like.
For someone’s first Jamaican rum I’d probably say Appleton 8 or 12? The funk is so distinct you want to ease into the water, and I think Appleton has hints of that overripe banana kind of thing but mild ones. Smith and Cross would be another good one because it’s further into the funky profile but hardly extreme, AND if you decide you don’t like funk at least at 57% you can use small amounts of it to perk up tiki drinks.
Ha. See I think that’s what scares people. S&C… your “Hardly Extreme” is many people “Funky AF”. But I get ya. But to most, they’ll never Really venture that deep into the High Ester stuff, so this is as Funky as they get, and to compare that to Appleton, it’s another level. Here’s a Q for ya… around/under £50 ($65) is there anything REALLY funky in the US at that price point?
@@StevetheBarmanUK That’s what I mean though - because in ACTUALITY it’s hardly extreme, if it puts someone totally off then they’ll know Jamaican funk is NOT for them (but as I say they can then use the S&C up in tiki drinks at least). As for whether the really funky stuff comes in at a lower price point here… there’s a 5 year Hampden at 315 ester count that’s $60?
Ohh, did someone say Rum? Gosh I still remember my first boozed up drink at 18 years old, not the wisest point of many young peoples lives, especially when 90% of the glass was RUM with a piffly teaspoon of cola added, and that wasn't the ONLY glass too, yeah haven't done anything crazy like that since!
NRJ only owns 73% of Clarendon, the rest is owned by Diageo. Clarendon is the only NRJ distillery actually operating (as of 2020). 90% of its output is Captain Morgan's and Myers Rum. The other distilleries are owned for their inventory (which still makes them very valuable as you can imagine).
Edited to add: Captain Morgan's in Jamaica is made by Wray & Nephew and Captain Morgan's in the US is made at St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. But all of the Captain Morgans in Europe comes from Clarendon. Myer's Rum was sold to Sazerac in 2019, so I am not sure if that is still distilled by Clarendon anymore. They do say that it is '100% Fine Jamaican Rum', so someone on the island has to be producing it.
Ah. That’s great fact bombs. Cheers 👍 That makes sense. And totally missed Sazerac buying Myers. Was convinced that was still part of Diageo. Thank you.
Steve so would you recommend the rum bars for a cheap way to find the true funk of jamaica? I can get them i sweden for a fair price, rum fire is alot more $, worth it?
Yeah, I would actually. Not epic, but great for £20ish. The white gives you funk for days.
Doctor Bird and Doctor Bird Pineapple...~$30, $35
To tolerate the boys from Leeds Utd requires rums more than 50 quid. But for less, how about Appleton Bay Rare Cask 12 year, Smith & Cross, and Wray & Nephew (amazing nose, inexpensive, and great mixing rum even at that proof).
I'm gona keep it short
1# Bumbu rum XO. It's affordable yet complex Rum that a beginner ready for some non cola Rum should try
2# Plantation Rum for me. It's a consistent quality brand that people can try, It has affordable prices for those who isn't ready to spend money on quality alcohol
3# Mount gay rum. I remember buying it as a joke present, but It was the first rum all of my friends agreed Is so good you can drink neat, which didn't happen ever
So Coruba is actually two brands. The Basel-based Coruba originally inported rum from J. Wray and Nephew and sold it in Europe, then J. Wray and Nephew started exporting their own Coruba in the rest of the world, and as far as I know that is still how it works.
Ha, no not quite. This is the behind the scenes stuff that not many outside of the industry comprehend. Coruba is one company and is very much based in Switzerland as stated in the video. However, what you miss from behind the scenes is that Campari are actually the parent Company and Distributor...who also own Appleton and Wray & Nephew.
can't beat hampeden
I am starting to get annoyed by the mistakes you keep making concerning Myers's Rum Original Dark. Perhaps the British version is different from the American, although rhe bottle looks the same.
1. Every US imported bottle says, "Distilled in Jamaica under government supervision," not the Bahamas.
2. Meyers web site says that Myers's Dark is a blend of rums aged up to 4 years. One of your videos said it wasn't aged at all.
Why do you hate Myers's Dark?
🤣 Oh Doccy Neil, calm down and prepare to be educated!
First off, to my knowledge, I'm pretty much bang on the money with everything I've said about Myers. I certainly don't hate it. But it's not my favvy either. But to address your 2 issues...
1) Firstly, I'm pretty sure if you rewatch the video, I never said it wasn't Jamaican Rum. In fact it 100% is Jamaican Rum. What I probably said (this was filmed ages ago and i can't be bothered to watch again), is that IT'S NOT A JAMAICAN DISTILLERY! Which it isn't. Yes Myers as a Brand, uses Jamaican Rum. Of course. But to my knowledge, as it's a Diageo product, I'm pretty sure it's Bottled in the Bahamas at the Diageo bottling plant that also does some of the Captain Morgans. In the same vain that Coruba is also NOT a Jamaican Distillery or Brand. It's merely Jamaican Rum bottled in Switzerland. So hopefully, that's set that record clear. Myers is not like Appleton, Hampden, Worthy Park or Wray. They are Jamaican Distillery's. Myers is just a Brand that has decided to use Jamaican Rum.
2) IT IS Unaged Rum. By sheer Legal Definition and Jamaica's very own GI. And why Myers doesn't have an actual Age Statement...as in a Number on the Bottle...because it's Unaged!! By aged, you always refer to the youngest Rum in the Bottle. With Appleton 12yo, the youngest Rum is 12yo. With Hampden 8yo, the youngest Rum in the blend is 8yo. With Havana 3yo, the youngest Rum is 3yo.
Do not confuse the words "UP TO" with an actual Age Statement. The simple fact is, Myers has Unaged Rum in the Blend, which means it is by sheer worldwide legal definition, an Unaged Rum. It could have a 25yo Rum in it, it doesn't matter. because even if it has just 10ml of unaged Rum, it IS an Unaged Rum!
Now none of that makes it a bad Rum. And it doesn't make me hate it. But facts are facts.
So I hope that clears matters up for you. You're welcome. Hope I haven't ruined the rest of your Evening! 😘x
@Steve the Barman I like your videos, so understand that I am just trying to figure out the truth. I see your point about the aging. However, it is clearly printed on the bottle: Distilled in Jamaica. The US government demands an accurate origin on imported products. Are you saying that Myers's is in violation of this law?
@Steve the Barman I just did some more research from the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms. Myers's Dark Rum is Distilled in Jamaica and bottled in Louisville, Kentucky, USA!
Bacardi dedicated to making crappy rum and turning generations away from the category.
Whats that got to do with Jamaican Rum?
@@StevetheBarmanUK Because you mentioned Bacardi, and treated it as if it was an honest producer of rum, rather than a soulless factory of junk juice that drives the rum category done.
Not to mention their decades long political denigration of Cuban cultural and political development. Bacardi co tiniest to support the Bautista fascists in Florida that keep the Cuban people from being able to freely access the US market, while supportingneoFascists like Trump and DeSantis
