    This was a fantastic video. I have been a bourbon fan for a while and recently started trying Rum just to have a mixer. I can not believe I have missed out on this amazing spirit all this time. I have litraly stopped buying bourbon and stocking up on Rum. I ordered that book you showed and am looking forward to learning the difference. You videos are very helpful and I love the honesty. I keep looking at that Myers but something about the label looks wanky so I never buy it. I know that sounds foolish but sometimes visuals do play a part in shopping for a new bottle. I will absolutely buy a bottle after seeing this. I just also realized I have passion fruit syrup and plenty of lemons so it's time to make a hurricane.

      You’re absolutely 100%. We buy with our eyes. Part of me avoiding Myers for all these years is that…and Reputation amongst Peeps (Chinese whispers!) Rum Bar from Jamaican Worthy Park is another example. And Bounty from St Lucia. The labels make it look like a cheapo Rum. And it kinda is….in Price! But in quality, they are brilliant!!!

      Also, when I see Meyers it's always in a plastic bottle which is usually a sign of bottom shelf booze ( for example, New Amsterdam). Can't always judge a book by its cover, but first impressions count for a lot.

    Great Video Steve, Big fan of dark rums on my personal Journey with Rum over the years, Very much a Rum and Coke and Dark n' stormy guy, being my go to, with rum. usually have it with Goslings, and occasionally Myers because of the connection with Dark n' Stormy. But thanks for the heads up on Plantation rum, well worth hunting it down to try. Also I have forgotten about the Hurricane Cocktails, that takes me back, especially because I still have a sweet tooth. I share your enthusiasm for Rum, very much a Kindred spirit. (If you pardon the pun! 😁👍) Best wishes to you mate!

    First of all, I'm so impressed with your rum collection. I normally don't succeed having more than 2 or 3 nice bottles in stock until I drink them all lol. I've had two of the four, the Myers's and Pampero. I like Myers's and Coke a fair amount. Find after two of those, Myers's neat tastes better lol. I've also done Appleton 12 and 15 with coke, kills me such since nice sipping rum, but with the vanilla notes they have it really comes out with Coke and tastes like a nice vanilla Coke. Well, more rums to collect I need. Loving your show, so many people don't realize how much variations in rums there is vs the cheap stuff they drink in their mixers.

    They "trademarked" the cocktail (Dark N Stormy), but I have yet to find someone on the cocktail sub reddit who actually enjoys using Goslings for it. I actually used Myers for it because I didn't have anything else (I think my friend used a Havana Club) and I was surprised how much of a nice, malty addition it gave to the drink!

    • @StevetheBarmanUK

It’s only trademarked if you make a Pussers Painkiller. If you make a Painkiller, you can use Southern Comfort if you want… 🤫😇😂

    Steve, could you help me with somthin? I'm really new in rums' world, so I tasted Bacardi 8 just recently. I must say that I was disapointed, bcz it tastes just like bacardi gold, but (way) smoother. I was waiting a whole different experience than bacardi gold's. Here in Brazil, bacardi 8 costs 5 times bacardi gold's price and I don't think the taste difference is worth the price difference.
    The question is: which kind of rum is RADICALLY different and tastier to sip neat than bacardi's style? Rum in Brazil is very, very expensive and I don't want to waste too much money in rums that are just similar.

    • @StevetheBarmanUK
      @StevetheBarmanUK  Год назад

      @@victorvannatter312 There isn't a set answer to this! While it's true A LOT of "Dark Rums" purely get their Colour via added Colour...of course they do because they're unaged Rums. But that added Colour may/will also impart flavour. Just because "No Sugar is added" doesn't mean to say another sweetener hasn't been added. If they add Caramel Taste (not Colour) then they will claim no sugar. Cos well depending how you interpret it, Caramel is not Sugar. It was. but its not now...not how we'd think of Sugar. There's a brand that uses Honey for example... but they can claim no Sugar! Cos it's Honey, not Sugar. Another brand uses Treacle/Molasses... well again, "No Sugar" cos it's not Sugar!! But there are also brands out there that may use stuff like Coffee & Chocolate. Some will go down the ageing route and heavily Char the inside of the barrels before ageing. a Heavier Char gives a more natural darker colour. But whatever their methods, I'm yet to encounter a Dark/Black Rum that has a taste Profile close to an aged Rum. Like Myers tastes nothing even close to Appleton! It's the whole reason Gosling Trademarked the Dark N Stormy. Cos no other Aged Non-Dark Rum will give the lovely taste you get with a Dark & Stormy. I'm not saying Gosling is the best. But again in a Dark & Stormy, there's a whole world of difference between Appleton 8yo for example and Goslings/Myers/Worthy 109 etc etc
