I dont know about u,..but the myers's rum is a main player in my bar,...for low budget,.its taste is amazing,..i luv it in a planters punch with homemade grenadine,..not sure that the taste of myers is same in great britain but here in germany so deep, smokey and rich of dry fruits and tobacco,..for 13 euro is fabulous,.fine video, steve,.go on dude
Thanks a lot Steve.! T'was very informative)
I have used Lidl liberte spiced rum with fever tree ginger beer and really enjoyed it, it's a decent kraken substitute in my opinion. Nice vids btw steve
Slowly working my way through your content 😊 watched this yesterday and had to come back today to say that a Dark and Stormy with Myer's is in fact lovely, cheers!
When I first started I assumed dark rum referred to colour, so when I saw it in recipes I was thinking Havana 7, Kraken, Appleton 8 etc. Pleased to say I've got past the beginner stage and I've been happy to explore the higher quality offerings from brands I like. Still so much to learn but I'm glad I've got your channel as a guide! I really enjoy sipping along with the blue channel and trying to pick out the notes you mention, my nose is slower than my taste buds though haha 😅
Diplomatico reserva is my absolute favorite and my go to for all rum drinks I always have a bottle in my pantry
I strongly recommend trying Mocambo dark rum if you haven't already. Would love to see you review it.
I got hooked on OFTD. I like a rum and ginger, but I recently mixed oftd with hard apple cider. I compared it side by side with ginger and the cider was better. Then I mixed a half glass of Apple/oftd with a half glass of ginger/oftd it was amazing.
Same - if I had to pick one it's OFTD every time, absolutely great. It's strong, but I like to sip it on ice so there's a bit of dilution. It's spectacular in the Mai Tai - I'd guess it's a great stand in for the W&N 15 or 17; I also love pairing it with El Dorado 5 in my Ancient Mariner or Navy Grog.
My go-to dark rums for cocktails are Blackwell's and Caruba. Pusser's Gunpowder Proof for Painkillers.
Nice Vid! Plantation OFTD for me - Definitely a must for Painkiller and Hurricane. I would recommend the Hibiscus Punch Royale (Typically calls for an Aged Jamaican Rum but a Dark Rum can shine here imo)
Yeah. 100% Agree. Hibiscus & OFTD are great together!
The OFTD is my absolute go to, for bang for the buck I don't think you can really beat it.
Need to experiment more with dark rum. Only have the OFTD and Barcelo.
I know Steve you've progressed from Pampero Anniversario but that and OFTD are my fav black rums.
i just bought a bottle of gosling to try a dark and stormy
pussers been on my list for years am going get it one day
Which one is your best go for rum and coke? I tried till now only WP and Plantation Original dark. Cheers!
Hey Steve really love your channel and inside into rum. I notice you have a bottle of Skipper Rum, would love to see your review on that bottle hopefully in the future. That bottle use to be sold in the U.S. but only is available in the UK. I had to order overseas lol, any way I’m looking for to get this bottle because I love Demerara rum as well.
Filmed and incoming over on @stevethebarmanrumreviews very soon 👍
Personally for me a Mai Tai cries out for an aged Jamaican rum with at least some funk on it. That said, I know Kevin Crossman uses 1/4 OFTD in his ultimate blend so there’s definitely room for a dark rum in the mix.
Oftd for me, was too strong for me initially but built up to it, do like pampero too. Plus of course pussers
Wood's doesnt get enough love. I use it almost any time a cocktail calls for dark rum.
The caramel color is too much other than that it is fine.
Hi Steve! I love Rum but it's hard to get it here in Brazil, I found "Old nick dark rum" in Paraguay, have you used this rum before?
I love Captain Morgan dark original and coke no ice 😉
My go to is El Dorado 12 in a Mai Tai.
NVM the hassle, I'll just follow your lead and buy one of each. 🤣🥂
I'm a sucker for two drifters signature if that counts. But pussers isnt too bad either.
Although I'm not very versed in Rum, I like Doorly's 12-year. For me the value and quality is great '-)
Pussers over Wood's in terms of taste, but for the price Wood's is probably the best your gonna get for a gunpowder proof dark rum under £25
Here in Louisiana I can pick up a bottle of el dorado for $36
Pusser's is my absolute ideal Rum & Coke. They just harmonize so well together.
I have a bottle of Pussers Navy strength. Wasn't crazy about it upon first tryz but now I absolutely LOVE it!
think this calls for a story. Woods is what i refer to as dangerous rum, every time i go out to the club with my mates if its a good night you will usually end finding me bowling towards you with a weird looking glass saying "here taste this" when i have got too drunk and gone ah woods go on then as it shocks bartenders when i order it. is it my favourite, no. I say that crown has to go to Pussers rum, dads influence. I do like a pussers painkiller and a dark n stormy tbh so likely a tie cos i rarely have the painkiller.
It may have been asked but I've only just seen your video. When you mentioned the one that's missing and pulled out kraken, I was expecting you to say lambs.. you must have a low opinion of it as it doesn't feature but can I ask why?
Not low opinion. But it is like Kraken…and Capt Morgs. It’s not proper Rum. Just merely a blend of very cheap light (white) unaged rum, that’s had a lot of Caramel added to colour it…and sweeten it. When you try it alongside most other proper Dark Rums, it’s so sweet. And even though there’s no legal definition, it doesn’t qualify as a Navy Style Rum, nor a Navy Strength Rum. So is basically disregarded in Rum world. BUT. Does it taste okay with Coke. For sure. But it ain’t gonna work too well in Cocktails.
Coruba is a weird one. There is a brand that is bottled in Basel, Switzerland. They produce the Coruba Non Plus Ultra in a 40% abv and overproof version. However they are not sold to the US. In the US the brand is operated completely independent and produce entirely different rums. In continental Europe the non plus ultra series are available but not the American blends.
Don't hold me to this. But i'm 99% sure (not 100%..just off it) that the Swiss Coruba IS the Brand you get in the US. We don't get it here in the UK. But the Logos & websites are the same.
Have you tried JD Shore's Queen of the Fleet? It is wonderful!
Nope. Not heard of it.
Did not expect to see Nova Scotia popping up in the comments!
Hi Steve, how do you rate the ovd demerara rum compared to the skipper demerara rum? Think the OVD is more ready available in supermarkets.
Honestly, I haven't had it in ages. Years! It needs a revisit! Used to be everywhere, now i only see it online occasionally.
I've only seen the OVD in Asda.
Yeah I know it is in the asda regularly.
I see OVD everywhere. Maybe because it used to have Scottish links. Always wondered why you never spoke about it.
When is the Skipper review dropping?
What about the goslings,.can u compare it to myers's??
If i remember correctly, there is such comparison on this channel... or the other two channels. 😅
@@pan_alkoholowy ok,..i could not remember anymore,..
Where would you recommend we buy these rums most supermarkets have shelves full of spiced rums as a diabetic that’s not good
I shout them out in most videos…Master of Malt if you’re UK.
You have buy what you like.
After trying some proper rums, I don't know why anyone would drink Kraken😂
Ha, nah it has it's place. Unfortunately, when i go out...too much of a place. But you can't argue with the sales volumes!
Woods is the best value.
OFTD & Painkiller for me
What a combo!!
i have recently picked up a bottle of the OFTD that i am keen to try, is there some sort of formula to scale it to a 40% abv equivalent
Multiply the amount of 40% needed in a cocktail by 0.58 to work out how much OFTD you need.
Recipes calls for 60ml 40%
60×0.58 =roughly 35ml OFTD
@@PamD1 thank you
Is dark rum classed as navy rum
Nope. It's a whole different Category. And while "Navy Rum" doesn't have a specific Rule/Law, its widely considered to be either 54.5% or 57% AND is a blend of Aged Rums from different Countries/Islands. Like Barbados, Jamaica & Trinidad. For example, Smith & Cross, although it is 57% it is not a Navy Rum because it's just from Jamaica. Pussers is NOT a Navy Rum as its just Guyana Rum bottled in the BVIs. There are many "Navy Style" Rums out there that have one of the 2 Attributes...or maybe just Dark in Colour. But there are actually very few Proper Navy Rums in existence. For ref, Lambs IS NOT a Navy Rum. Nor is Woods. Don't confuse Navy Style with Navy Rum. But at the end of th day, it all comes back to point 1... there is no legal definition of Navy Rum. So Lambs/Woods can call themselves Navy Rum.
