Brilliant video. I have thought for a while now how come Aldi (not tasted the Lidl) are doing decent quality rum based spirit drinks (spiced / pineapple / cherry / raspberry mojito and now an aged one for around £15 the aged is a bit dearer and other brands want on average £22 - £30 and they are not as nice. Ok the proper rums are the best and justify the heavier price tag. But word should be getting around by now to just purchase the supermarket own brands 1. They are cheaper 2. They taste nicer. So its a win win. Hope the makers of the brands you have there are starting to worry. Lower your prices or up your quality. Because aldi and lidl are blowing you out of the water. Probably out of business soon.
I guess it shouldn't be at all surprising, but I still find it interesting that- as you guessed- some of the underperforming neat ones would do so much better with mixing. I've never been all that interested in finding a good pineapple rum, but I'm quite keen on that Plantation now! Thanks Steve!
Interesting to see the supermarket rums doing so well. Would love to see a comparison of unflavoured supermarket rums but appreciate not great for worldwide RUclips.
Yeah, but don't forget that a lot of the Supermarket stuff is produced by the Bigger Brands. People miss that, they automatically think drop in quality, as opposed to, well they can just bring costs down cos they can buy 10x more from a producer!
Excellent video, I do like the Plantation poured over a big frozen pineapple juice ice cube along with ginger ale allowing it to melt ever so slightly. Love you to try Libations Pina from Yorkshire
I haven’t tried any of the others. I can only get Stiggins in my area! So, I cut a 1/4 of a pineapple, remove the skin and chop the fruit and skin into chunks. Get that infused for Two days. Strain, and wow.. I’ll just say it goes fast! Great in a Pineapple Negroni! Super informative! Thank you for posting!
Well, I managed to snaffle the very last bottle from Aldi today, just tried it now, nice for sipping straight, good with lemonade and had to try a daiquiri, this stuff is blooming nice, well done to Aldi for this one
Yeah that's the only problem with these Aldi/Lidl drinks, it's buy them while they're there. Grabbed the British apple and Burnt caramel (in the shop now) and they're not too bad but other than the Black spiced there's nothing else (multiple Aldi/Lidl around here).
Glad it was helpful mate. It tastes great, But the one thing i should've made clear...i DO like the Salted Caramel Vibes. Watching back, 3 of those Rums that alwasy scored high had Salted Caramel. If you don't like that, you'll hate them.
This is a cracking, highly informative video. It is not a drink that for a minute I would have considered buying but the video has really put me in the mood. The comparisons and reasons for choice are logical andnicely reasoned. A trip to Aldi is on the cards.
Anything Dave Wondrich has been involved with spirits wise has been fantastic. Figgins Fancy Pineapple= superior to any artificial infusion on the market Plantation O.F.T.D.= becoming a Tiki bar must have Ransom Old Tom= way better than most old toms I’ve had. Quite frankly crushes Haymens Dry Curaçao = pretty much a serious bars standard Orange liqueur
Checkout siesta key toasted coconut or their spiced rum. They clame to only sweeten with honey and use real whole spices. Ive tried both at only $26. I was blown away by both
Got a bottle of the Plantaion Pineapple Stiggins' Fancy Rum at the duty free and I gotta say I hate it. It's harsh on the nose and in your mouth, the pineapple is hardly there. I'm almost wondering if it's the same rum as being reviewed here. It reminds me of cognac in all the wrong ways. Gonna try to find a way to make use of it, but in simple cocktails I've found it hard to cover up the aspects that I don't like.
Great video 👍 To me the Clear overall winner has got to be the Aldi product! Yes the overproofs pip it in taste a bit, and like you say they go further, but not a bottle and a half further. A £15 bottle has no right to be up there with the higher end stuff, but Aldi have played a blinder and found a producer that can clearly do just that
Yeah, I mean Flavour wise, yes there were better, which has to be the main thing. But price wise, you really can't fault them. I'm not the kinda guy that would buy on price... i would buy on Taste, but i know there's a huge market for cheap stuff.
Fab video Steve! Been looking forward to the new Two Swallows for ages. Can I ask what you do with all the leftovers at the end (aside from DMF in the bin!)?
Charles Dickens was ahead of his time! 😝 Here's an idea for you Steve, how about rum milkshake cocktails? I know dairy is a bit of a no no for you but maybe something for this summer?
So much word-of-mouth for the Plantation. I wasn't too impressed. One of my favorite Coconut rums is Siesta Key Coconut Rum. They roast their own coconuts, using natural coconut in the rum. Now compare this with Malibu and you will not get that same sipping on suntan lotion coconut flavor. Siesta is more balanced and nuanced, and all together more natural tasting, but with Plantation pineapple I really had a difficult time picking up the notes.
Obviously Plantation varies batch for batch cos it does use real Pineapple. I had a bottle in 2019 that was really dialled back. But this latest batch is much more Pineapple forward. As for the Malibu comment. Look I love Malibu, it’s fun. But you realise it’s only a Liqueur right?! It’s not a Coconut Rum.
@@StevetheBarmanUK Yes, I was only comparing the very forward and intense coconut flavors of Malibu to the more delicate flavors of Siesta Key. I thought the Plantation pineapple would be reminiscent of this rum, but my batch apparently has very little to no pineapple flavor. And who doesn't love Canadian Malibu. I imagine the Captain is there... hypothermic.
Before I watch the full video, gonna put it out that I reckon the old J is the one you wouldn't drink neat again. Also o love the stiggins fancy got through numerous bottles, gutted when M&S stopped selling it
I was wrong. I bought Old J spiced and Tiki when they first got released and just found the flavours really artificial, and overly fake vanilla. Looks like their pineapple is better
Good to put those Budget Rum's in the frame in summer I pour them over fresh ripe pineapple for a day and the work great in a cocktail . Aldi selling their Pineapple rum at £12 ATM float the OP 's on top winner !
STEVE!!! Great video!!! I LOVE Plantation Pineapple!!! What's cool about it, neat, the pineapple is subtle. In a cocktail, the Pineapple really comes out to play!!! I love this in a Negroni!!! CHEERS!!!

Loads of the pine apple at lidl and it's fine but the dark spiced liberté is like hens teeth

It’s that thing, Sugar ALWAYs makes things taste better when mixed.

Watching this right before I visit the Two Drifters distillery. Excellent news haha.

Cheers Ann! Try what Plantation do. Flesh in a Darker Rum and Skin in a Lighter Rum. See how that effects it.
Thanks so much for this - I've been very hesitant to spend the money on a bottle of pineapple rum - I am definitely getting the Plantation now.
Just bought a bottle of Two Swallows to try after watching this video! Only one I've tried before is DMF so we will see the inprovement 😎
Well, I managed to snaffle the very last bottle from Aldi today, just tried it now, nice for sipping straight, good with lemonade and had to try a daiquiri, this stuff is blooming nice, well done to Aldi for this one

The Aldi Casario is now £9.09- seems like an absolute bargain!
That plantation pineapple is really good. Rum and coke and daiquiri
Great video! I love how thorough it was.
Love this video! I have been eyeing up the two swallows pineapple so great to know how it compares to the others.

I love the salted caramel vibes so that most certainly doesn’t put me off!
Plantation Pineapple is absolutely amazing, had a bottle a year or so back and wow, it didn't last long lmao.
Really enjoyed this video. I’m pleased that I have Two Drifters and Plantation on the shelves
That's awesome! 2 Cracking Rums there!!

Awesome! I’ll have to get my bottle of Plantation Stiggins Fancy out. I’ll have to find “my” daiquiri recipe for this one.
Its a cracking Daq! Split the Lime with Grapefruit! SOOOOOOO Good!

NOt a UK product, but if it ever comes this way on general release, i'll look at it!
I’ve had the Siesta Key before and realized I discovered a gem. Excellent stuff.
Great informative video. The longer ones give more details IMO
I do love the longer videos, but the audience doesn't! 😂 I get A LOT of Drop off. But sod them...

Glad you enjoyed it Ken!
Real good video. Two drifters flying the flag for British made rum !!
Cheers Sam. yeah, there's some awesome British Rum about at the moment.
Stiggins’ Fancy is, perhaps, the best rum under $30.00 US I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting.
This latest batch (or batches) so different from a couple of years ago. Really Pineapple forward now. So good 👍
Love dead man's fingers pineapple and passion fruit rums yummy, cherry isn't bad either
Ut oh...don't finish watching this video then...
