As the centuries passed, it's duty never waivered. It's faith that the king would one day return never faltered. But, deep inside it's heart, it knew that time would never come. If it could weep, it would. Though it would always remain steadfast in its charge, it would always harbor a sadness. Though the King's castle might fade to nothing, The creature would always remain.

Perhaps the creature is not waiting for the King's return, but the creature is the King himself, waiting for someone to break the curse. Perhaps that is why the castle was abandoned, for the King's subjects believed the King was murdered by the creature and they feared for their own lives.

  • @LawdyLawdy

There once was a king in a far off land. From a castle in the middle of a lake he ruled justly, tempering his rule with kindness and compassion. He was greatly loved by the people and many brought him gifts, but he would always refuse. He cared not for the riches and luxaries of the role, but only for the prosperity and happiness of his people.
One day, an envoy from a far off land brought a feeble sea creature before the king. "A delicacy of our lands" the envoy proudly proclaimed, "They were thought to be extinct, but were lucky to find one more. We bring it before you as a gift so that you may taste the finest dish of our lands." The people were stunned when he accepted the gift, but it was not for himself that he took the offering. When he looked upon the creature he saw its eyes were that of a scared child, and sensed an intelligence that was not unlike a human's. After he sent the envoy on its was he took the creature and released it into the waters surrounding his castle. Everyday the king would go out and feed the creature the finest food he could offer and speak to it. The people watched as the creature grew, fueled by the King's love, from a frail, scared creature into a imposing and loyal companion.
However despite the love the people and the creature had for their king, there were those who envied him. His brother, a wicked and jealous man, plotted to overthrow him, so he could become the rightful king of the lands. The king hearing of this treachery, could not believe his beloved brother would do such a thing. He sent a letter to his brother to meet him at the far off fields where they used to play together. He hoped that his brother would remember the times of their childhood, put aside this needless jealousy, and reconcile with him. The brother accepted the proposal, and the king prepared for the journy. He went to his companion and stroked the creature's snout. "My friend, I will be gone for a time, but fear not I will return. Watch the castle until I return, as you always have" he told the creature with a smile. Then the king rode off.
A month later his brother returned from their meeting, but the king did not. He declared that the old king never arrived and is missing, but in the mean time he will act as king of the lands. As he approached the castle the creature blocked his entrance. The usurper brother, annoyed by this, commanded the creature obey him, but it refused. Enraged, the usurper demanded the guards kill the creature, but they too refused, too scared of the sheer power of the guardian creature. The Usurper relented and stormed off commanding a new castle be built elsewhere.
The usurper was a horrid ruler and spent frivolusly on luxaries, and oppulance. He depleted the treasury of the kingdom, and the kingdom collapsed. The subjects who had once come to visit the guardian slowly stopped coming, while one by one the castle caretakers left or passed away, and soon the castle laid empty.
Centuries passed and the king and castle were forgotten by time, but the guardian remains watchful ever waiting for the king to return, reclaim his castle, and reunite with his greatest friend.

Child: "Mommy, Mommy! I saw a monster in the lake!"
Mother: "Dear, that's just an old tale. There's no monster in the lake."
Child: "I saw it. Tell me the story about it again."
Mother: "Very well. A long time ago, a great king ruled from the castle, his whole kingdom surrounding him from his hill. The king liked to collect things. He liked money and wealth but his favourite possession was a creature. A mighty beast he had captured and placed deep below his castle. This creature was like an eel with tentacles coming from its head. It has six eyes and a maw with razor-sharp teeth."
    Child: "Is that the monster?"
Mother: "Hush now. All in good time. The king kept the monster in a small lake, where it would never see the light of day, with only the king and his guards to feed it and taunt it. That was until the princess, still only a child, snuck down one day and met the creature. In it's years of torment it had grown bigger, as long as two carriages. When it saw the princess it emerged, letting out a roar of anger as it smelt the king. The princess, however, didn't run. She didn't scream. She looked into one of the eyes of the creature and reached out a hand, placing it on the snout of the creature. The story says the princess would visit and feed the creature, the two becoming friends over the years."
    Child: "Then what happened?"
Mother: "A few years later, a great disaster came to the kingdom. A flood quickly swept the kingdom away, threatening to fill the valley up with water. As the water quickly rose, the king tried to shelter his daughter but the flood would soon reach even the castle. As the king held his daughter, a large shape emerged from the water. The creature, now even bigger stared the king down, the years of enslavement burning in its eyes."
Child: "And it ate them. That's what everyone says."
Mother: "That is one version. Another says that the creature looked down the king, it's head larger than the castle gate. It then reached out a tentacle towards the princess. Despite the king's protests, the princess climbed onto the creature. The creature carried the princess away, leaving the king to die. The story doesn't end there. The creature carried the princess to a safe hill, where the flood could never harm her."
    Child: "It saved her?"
Mother: "Yes. She was its only friend. The princess would then go on to live a happy life, never forgetting its friend that saved her."
Child: *Yawn* "I like this story better." *The child falls asleep.*
    Mother: "Sleep well, my child."
Mother: *Turns her head to the lake, seeing something move in the water by the castle.* "And you too, my guardian."
Edit: Thank you, everyone. I just did this on a whim but I'm glad most of you enjoyed it. The real credit goes to Thalasso though for that amazing diorama.

You should try doing more structural damaged buildings like broken/damaged windows/doors/etc, on your forgotten shrine diorama the shrine didn't look that abandoned or in disrepair. Just a suggestion. Keep up the awesome dioramas!

The thing is that not damage structure will create a conflict feeling inside your brain, and from there make it more uncomfortable and fear of something bad gonna happen become more real, i suggest that you should just keep doing finest structure.

He had a point but I think the reason why there is not that much damage is to showcase that this structure has been preserved overtime, or the nature just took care of it. You get my point?

Lol, I really do enjoy the definition of "easy" to some people. I understand that once you do certain things SO repetitious that you develop muscle memory and it's not that big a deal to you, but there were like 18 steps just to make that one simple little crown molding thing on the front of that tower! This person has impressive skill and enviable vision 👍

There’s so much reverence that it’s spellbinding. Centuries ago my family had a castle in Ireland left to ruin when Queen Victoria drove them out. No one looked back. And now, the last tower fell a decade ago and we all thought “oh well, none of our business”. Watching this though, I feel an odd sense of sadness knowing that I have no idea what it looked like. I hope someone appreciated it the way you do towards beautiful and haunting structures.

You sat on the edge of the great lake, near the abandoned castle everyone had cautioned you against going to. There were rumours, rumours of a great beast that lived in the lake, that guarded the castle with its life, even though the king had been dead for centuries, and nobody had inhabited the castle since. You didn't believe such children's tales. Something so large could not possibly sustain itself in the lake.
And yet, as you sat there, you felt as if there was someone.. or something... watching you.
It was a mildly uneasy feeling, however, you paid it no mind.
As such, it came as a great shock when the water in front of you began to ripple and a sort of worm-like appendage rose out of the water. That was then followed by a large head of a monstrous-looking beast. You stared at it. It had 8 of those large tentacles, and several smaller ones on its chin. You wanted to move, as of course, to you, the creature was massive and frightening, but your legs did not comply.
Once some of the shock of the initial appearance began to wear off, you noticed it was not doing anything to harm you. On the contrary, rather, it appeared to be looking at you sadly. Its six beady eyes were almost pleading.
This was not a terrifying monster as the others had said, was it? It was not guarding, it lived here, but... it was lonely. Oh...
You reached out to touch the creature. It moved a tentacle limb towards your hand, making an odd rumbling sound that seemed to be from joy. Or, comfort maybe? You weren't sure, but it sounded glad. You smiled. Despite its size, it appeared very friendly- like a big dog! You laughed a little to yourself as you began to pet the extended limb. The creature rested its head on the banks of the lake beside you. Its head was almost the size of your house, and yet you knew at this point that the creature did not wish to do you harm.
"Mum, Mum! Tell me the story of the castle guardian again!" A small child called, currently tucked into bed. They were eager to hear the tale once more.
"Alright, little one. Well, you see, there once was a king, who lived in a castle on a lake. The king was a most benevolent ruler and loved his people, however- there was one thing he loved even more. There was rumoured to be a large beast living in the lake surrounding the castle, protecting it. The king loved this creature, visiting it every day to provide company and extra food. However, one day, a war broke out. Not being the kind to stay at home and watch as his peoples were slaughtered, the king went out with his battalions. He did not come back. The castle was abandoned. The beast was unable to leave the lake- it was too large to swim far enough downstream. So, for centuries, it waited. It waited, and waited, and waited. But its beloved king did not return. It waited in solitude for who knows how long, until one day, a brave traveller- in spite of the rumours their village told of the beast- ventured to the banks of the lake, prepared to go and explore the great castle. They were a curious one. They did not believe the rumours to be true- they did not even think there WAS a beast. So, when the beast showed up on the shores, it frightened them. Quickly though, they realised the beast was not there to hurt them. The beast seemed lonely. This person felt bad for the large beast, who could not leave the lake and did not have anyone to talk to. Every day from then onwards, they visited the creature. They became very close friends. One day, a flood broke out. It provided just enough water for the creature to leave, but.. it did not. It did not want to leave its newfound friend and then be unable to return. The person realised that, with enough effort, they could perhaps deepen the streams, so that the creature could come and go as it pleased. After years, they had succeeded in doing so. It took a lot of effort. The beast could now leave and return as it pleased."
    "Mama, is the story true?"
"It may be, my child. Goodnight now."
    "Aw... night-night."
You smiled watching your child as they drifted off.
Turning your head towards the lake, you spoke. "Goodnight to you too, my glorious guardian."
