The best part of the video is how Patty knows when she needs to take over, and does it without missing a beat, then she falls into the backgrounds effortlessly. She’s amazing.
She is the perfect example of an amazing duet partner and friend.
I love her so much!!!
You are so right she is so amazing to not get the credit she deserves
That was beautiful.keep it up.Vonnie 😢
Patty is so talented!!!!
Props to Patty! She is the quintessential professional, and a great friend, for carrying that song like she did. A friend in need, is a friend indeed!
My father heard this song two weeks before passing away. I'd always prayed my daddy would get saved from the mind that messed him up in WWII. Daddy had been in rehab for 7 months and I went every night except for one. I made sure he ate and was tucked in. You see my daddy had always been a angry man from seeing his best friends being blown to pieces in WWII and he couldn't forgive himself for having to shoot ppl to survive so their fore he thought God wouldn't forgive him. He heard this song like I said and made sure I knew he loved it. Daddys life was changed and daddy found peace before he died around 2 weeks before he passed. I made sure this song was played at his funeral. I'd prayed for my daddys salvation since I was a child and to let the world know it's Gods timing when answering our prayers not ours. Daddy died in 2009 and I'm 52 now so trust me don't stop praying and believing. God has got you.
Vince wrote this to honor his brother and his brother in music Kieth Whitley. This funeral was open to the public. You should react to Alan Jackson singing he stopped loving her today at George's funeral
i couldnt watch this after the initial showing for years. i knew Sweet Pea wouldnt make it thru..like me. Patty thank u. You held it all up. We miss you Possom
I went to see Vince at the Ohio State Fair three weeks after his Father (a federal judge in Columbus) had died. I truly thought he would cancel. This was the last song he sang and half way through it he broke down and couldn’t finish. Everyone at the concert stood and sang the rest of the song while he played his guitar and cried. There wasn’t a dry eye leaving his concert. I will never forget it.
I grew up in the 60s an 70s. It was a great time for music. I saw almost every pop and rock singer and band of that era in concert. But it was in the late 80s that I attended a midweek concert in a small theater on the campus of Pacific University in Stockton, California. Apparently, the bands were going from the Bay area down to the L.A. area and booked this show in between. It was at least 4 hours and maybe even 5 hours long. Place might have held a thousand people and there were empty seats. Seems country struggles for an audience on Wednesday night. Show started with Merle Haggard. Then came Conway Twitty. George Jones finished it off. Imagine those 3 legends in a small little place playing and singing like there were 50,000 of us. And this is the God's honest truth. I have not been to a single concert since. Coincidence? I'm still not sure. I am sure of this. If I get a chance to see Vince Gill, I'll be there.
@@bullfrogger1208When we lived in Honolulu, we hopped a plane to Maui to see Vince, as we were starved for some country music, lol. He was there to golf, mostly, but played a small concert at a hotel, where we all just sat on blankets on the grass in front of a small stage. He was amazing, he sounds better live than in the radio. And he’s legit hilarious. Good times.
Vince is one of my most favorite country stars. It would’ve been an honor to be at that performance and sing with him.
@@bullfrogger1208I saw them over on the east coast! That was such an amazing show, and we were so lucky that we were able to see it! ❤
Wow, I don't even know what to say to that, just wanted to acknowledge the understanding.
Vince Gill started to write this song when country singer Keith Whitley died in 1989.
Vince finished writing the song after his brother Bob died in 1993.
Patty carried Vince - true friend having his back, see her watching him like a hawk
Front row - first persons to stand are Garth Brooks, and his wife Trisha Yearwood - also having Vince’s back in a big way
Now you’ve seen the real Patty Lovelace. That’s what my grandmother would call a woman with a steel backbone, because Lord knows she probably wanted to cry as well. This one brings me to tears every time.
Small correction....it's Loveless. Lovelace was a porn star....lol
Me too.
Kay Amo
It's LOVELESS!!!
Vince had to do a longer guitar solo in order to gain his composure. He looked up to George and they had a strong bond. That was George’s family crying in the front of the audience. Heartfelt reaction!
Mad respect for Trisha and Garth for standing in support of a dear friend struggling, So Humble and Kind as Tim McGraw would say!!
I love how she moved closer to him near the end after he got choked up bad
Patty is one class act with an INCREDIBLE voice.
VInce's solo was improvised so he could recompose himself. Beautiful.
Patty is absolutely under rated as well as vince!!!!
Vince Gill wrote this song for. A friend of his and also for his brother who had passed away! 😢😢❤❤😢😢❤❤
I have been a fan of Vince Gill since he was in Pure Prairie League back in the late 70's to early 80"s
Patty did such a phenomenal job of watching him and knowing when to harmonize and when to take the lead. These two perform such awesome music together. This was a true blessing ❤️🙏
I think she fought the urge to just go hug him.
George Jones nicknamed Vince Gill Sweet Pea!
This was played at my husband's funeral.. 46 yes married.. 6 years gone still missing him
i lost my dad back in '04 and it still hurts to this day, especially as i also lost my mum in '16 12 years after my dad
George was a hero of Vince's, and most country singers of his generation. They were also good friends. George nicknamed Vince "Sweet Pea." George said Vince sang too pretty to have all those hits. You need to hear the version of this live from Carnegie Hall with Ricky Skaggs and Alison Krauss on the harmonies. It's otherworldly gorgeous.
Vince Gill has a truly angelic voice and Patty Loveless is one of the best female singers
Patty was the rock he needed at this trying time.... so very moving and personal
She became the definition of the word class.
Sweet Pea loved the Possum exactly that much. You can see how difficult that was to get through for him. Truly great performers and people.
@MR_SEBSDURAN I'm just a simple man that is not good with the high tech stuff. I don't do the DM thing. I appreciate it 🙏.
Little known back story to this, aside from the original meaning of this song and Vince's affection for George Jones, he said on a podcast that it was hearing Patty sing that broke him up. He hadn't gotten to sing with her in a few years and it just hit him like a ton of bricks, so he had to do that long solo to get himself together.
Vince Gill and George Jones were friends. Both had love and respect for the other
Vince Gill wrote this song about his brother who died 😢
Vince started writing this song when country artist Keith Whitley passed from alcoholism, early into his career. The last few lines of the first verse "You weren't afraid to face the devil, you were no stranger to the rain" was a direct reference Keith's song "I'm No Stranger to the Rain".
Vince didn't finish the song until a few years later, when his brother passed away. I think he ended his own life.
In recent years, I think Vince added another final verse to the song, but I can't remember it.
I love how Patty watches vince for cues to how he is feeling and to know when to come in and fill for him
Country musicians and singers are like extended family. This is essentially Vince and Patty singing for their spiritual uncle in a big way.
I love EVERY duet they’ve ever done together!❤ Pocket Full of Gold, When I Call You Name and this one are my favorites!! Vince’s voice has become graveling since he joined The Eagles.
One of the saddest songs written as an honor to his late brother. Vince was one of the young artists to back up George Jones early in his career. George was a mentor aside from one of the best Country voices in history.
Now you'll have to do the official video to get just how beautiful it is, that way you get the harmony of him, patty, and Ricky Skaggs. Then you'll understand why it was so hard for Vince to get thru it. He was very close to George "opossum" Jones.
This song was played at both my parents funerals, while carrying them to the grave site.
Harold That’s Allison Krauss you’re thinking of. Patty wasn’t on that one.
@@tomhelmsjr not in the original video, Allison was on the opry stage. Check out the original official video. Allison stood in for Patty, cause she couldn't be there atthe time.
@@harolddorsey9179 I don’t know if I ever saw the video. I like listening to the live versions, but I will check it out. Thanks 🙏
I agree you should check out the official video to hear how beautiful he sings this song, I always cry when I hear this song
He wrote it for his brother when he passed
The first line is about Keith Whitley who died in 1989, the second line is about Vince’s Bob who died from a heart attack in 1993. Many people overlook that the 1st verse is about Keith Whitley. His death had a profound effect on the country music community,
especially Vince Gill.
You have to understand that he began writing this for Keith Whitley, and didn't finish it. When his brother died because of his addiction, he picked it back up and finished it. Beautiful song that comes with so much pain. I love this song.
I will never not cry no matter who or how someone sings this song. It’s just beautiful. ❤
I remember when Grorge passed it seemed like America just froze in time and cried George not only touched the country music lovers with his music but he is embedded in the soul and effected and not only country music but he changed country music, America and her people to the soul and will alway remain there aslong as there is 1 not singer but atleast 1 lover of country music. Great react brother your assimilation is complete and now you have a direct line to our ancestors that youll forever be connected to.
The late Charlie Daniels gave an awesome eulogy at this memorial. He had a great line about the "cookie-cutter sameness" that you see in "country" music today that caused the audience to cheer loudly.
Ironically, I watched the livestream of Charlie Daniels' funeral where Vince sang this song solo.. So in a weird indirect way, it's almost like Charlie Daniels witnessed Vince perform a song at his own funeral.
Best eulogy I have ever heard and it was spot on to describe Jones life
Vince has an amazing tenor voice. And a fantastic guitar player. He has a song called When I call your name. Patty backs him up. It's beautiful.
And one they do very good together is “My kind of woman/ my kind of man”
And Pocket of Gold!!
R.I.P. George, you gave this old man some good memories. Vince and Patty did you proud!
Vince Gill is a phenomenal guitar player. I heard him say, “ It’s not how many notes you play, it’s what notes you play”.
This was song at my son's funeral eight months ago. This is the first time I've been able to listen to it since then. The words totally apply to him. I praise God he is singing his heart out in heaven now. This is a powerful song.
No parent should ever have to mourn the death of their child. I am so sorry you have had to do this and my hope is that time has brought a measure of peace.
Vince is know as a great vocalist as well as a great guitarist. He won Male Vocalist of the Year, on multiple occasions. He has a RUclips channel where he invites people into his house for jam sessions and to just sit around and talk.
Patty took over when needed. The guitar did the talking for vince. beautiful
There is not a purer voice in country music.
Alison Krauss is just as pure
@@brianbrekke9500 No, she's nasal, not the same thing.
@@radicalreactions1633 Hahahahahahahahaha "nasal" hahahahahahaha
I'd put Pam Tillis in that category as well. But there is something special about Gill.
Vince Gill is one of the best performers I’ve ever seen. He wrote this for his brother who passed away in 1993. What a loving tribute. The emotion just comes straight through to your heart.
The original inspiration for this song was Keith Whitley. His brother’s death was his reason for finishing the song.
Garth Brooks was interviewed after the funeral on why he did not perform, he said he could not have gotten through a song because of the deep emotions he had for Mr. George Jones...
Aw, man.. I wish people would've requested a different version first, so he could appreciate the beautiful 3-part harmonies in this song.
Same here.. This was a emotional one but you got to hear the full song and the words to really hear how great this song is..
What a totally wonderful job She did of stepping up when his voice faltered too much yet letting him try his best to hold it together and go on.
If you want to hear them both in strong voice and harmony, check out When I Call Your Name.
Oh , this one kills me everytime. OMG, what a strong emotional song. The solo guitar segment wasn't meant to be this long, but the band knew that Vince had to regain control, and he did it, the only way he knew how ... by playing his guitar. Patty did an awesome job in helping Vince get through this. You'll see in the audience, Garth Brooks and his wife Trish Yearwood standing in support for Vince and beside Garth, the woman in black is George Jones' wife, Nancy. Another great one to listen to is Alan Jackson singing George's famous song He Stopped Loving Her Today. So emotional and tearing Nancy apart. ruclips.net/video/UiM42bGUFbg/видео.html RIP George as no one will be able to Fill His Shoes (another great one from George). Great reaction.
Well said
Being a huge fan of all three people (George, Vince and Patty), this version of this song hits me particularly hard. The song always brings me to tears because it reminds me of the loved ones I have lost.
A note about when the audience started standing up, those country legends themselves. I can only imagine what Vince Gill and Patty Loveless, the honor they felt, been supported from the floor, by some of the industry’s most well-known and well loved artists. This song has given so many, so much comfort through the years.
well said
Vince Gill is an amazing guitarist. George Jones always called him "sweetness". Vince was such a fan of George's. True respect. I can't believe he was able to sing this song at this time.
George Jones nickname for him was Sweetpea, because of his sweet voice
Sweetness? Lol
No, it was Sweat Pea.
@@Gutslinger my mistake
Vince wrote this for his brother. He and George had a special bond. Patty and Vince are cousins. You should check out When I Get Home by Vince. Patty sings backup on that track as well.
I didn’t know patty is his cousin! Thank you telling us that!
@@vhurd4996 my pleasure
Patty is not Vince’s cousin, they are just very, very close friends for over 35 years and did background singing on each other’s songs since the beginning of their careers.
@@terrybaby4vr thank you, I didn’t think I had ever heard that. Thank you for clearing that up.
And yes they have sang background for each other for many years.
Also he wrote the first verse for his brother but never finished it I heard until Keith Whitley passed. The second verse “You were no stranger to the rain” is a direct reference to Keith’s “No Stranger to The Rain”
Seb….you should add Keith Whitley to your list and one of my favorite George Jones songs…I don’t need your rocking chair.
George Jones was a country idol to most of the country singers of today, including Vince Gill.
If you're a human being these types of songs soothe the soul every time he says son you're working on this time I think of my dead son he was 37 years old
I wish people would've had you get familiar with George Jones before reacting to this. Might've made it more impactful, as it was to those of us who know both well.
There's a different upload of this performance where Vince tells a funny story about him and George Jones involving ravioli, before his performance.
Vince is above and beyond when it comes to guitar playing, and he's played across all genre's. After his 20+ years of Country Music, Vince has now been with the Eagles for the last few years...he's an amazing writer, vocalist and picker. He wrote this song when his brother died, its very personal to him. But you should check out the official video...the harmonies between Vince, Patty and Ricky Skaggs are beautiful. Vince and Patty have sang together quite a bit over the years, their voices go so well.
Not sure if original member but one of Vince's first bands was Nitty Gritty Dirt band
You should definitely check out Alan Jackson doing “He stopped loving her today” at this same funeral. Beautiful.
Vince Gill is one of the best guitarists in Nashville. Along with that voice and his ability to cross genres, that's why the Eagles asked him to tour with them. His older brother died young and his friend singer Keith Whitley ("When You Say Nothing At All") died of alcoholism, and Vince wrote this in honor of both of them.
George Jones, legend yes!! Listen to "HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY.. I HOPE YOU "ZEB" continue your country journey.. we all live what our country singers sing... Love you and your beautiful wife.
Vince wrote that from the passing of a younger brother
This was played at my grandpa's funeral, it still makes me ugly cry
There are times when us mere humans need to cry. For those of us who were so hardened by life, God gave us Vince Gill.
This was beautiful to watch the raw emotion, but I highly recommend going back and watching another version… goosebumps with the beautiful harmonies ❤️
Agreed
Love This Song!!! Thank You Vince & Patty...It Soothes The Soul....
Vince is the nicest person I’ve ever met. He and my brother were breakfast buddies for a few years. When I called Vince to tell him my brother was near death, he was at the house in 20 minutes, tears streaming down his face to say goodbye. ❤
Vince and Patty did a song in the 80's called, "When I Call your Name." Beautiful.
George Jones became "The Greatest Living Country Singer" due to his phrasing, incredible voice and the way he turns a phrase or takes a one-syllable word and make it 5 syllables by moving and bending it. He called Vince Gill "sweet pea", and they were good friends. He recorded a song George wrote called Love Bug, and sang with several artists behind George for I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair, about not giving up or retiring regardless of age. He had such a great voice. Check out the following songs:
He Stopped Loving Her Today
Bartender's Blues
The Grand Tour
The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song)
Choices
The Cold Hard Truth
Our Bed Of Roses
Daddy Come Home (with 10 year-old daughter Tamala Georgette Jones, his only child with Tammy Wynette)
Someday My Day Will Come
I'm The One She Missed Him With Today
The Door
Don't Stop The Music
I'd Rather Have What We Had
White Lightning
The Race Is On
Walls Can Fall
You Didn't Get The Picture
A Good Year For The Roses (there's a solo recording from the 1970s, and a duet with Alan Jackson around 1995)
I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair
You Got The Best Of Me Again
Her Name Is
Golden Ring (with Tammy Wynette)
When The Grass Grows Over Me
Mama Take Me Home
Yesterday's Wine (with Merle Haggard)
I Must've Done Something Bad (if you search this song on RUclips, you may find a live performance of it during a tribute to Merle Haggard. I've never seen an audience applaud an artist 4 times by the time the song ended. What a testament to REAL Country Music).
(These Days) I Barely Get By
Traveller's Prayer (with Sweethearts Of The Rodeo, a sister duo with one sister being married to Vince Gill for close to 20 years)
There Goes My Everything
Second Handed Flowers
A Picture Of Me (Without You) (Lorrie Morgan covered this song 20 years after George recorded it in 1972, as a tribute to her husband Keith Whitley, who passed in 1989)
Amazing Grace (from The Gospel Collection, circa 2003-2004)
I made a list of 32 incredible songs. Most are ballads and real tearjerkers, but I added a few novelty/up-tempo songs also. There's many others as he ties with Elvis Presley for roughly 700 songs recorded in both careers.
There are actually a few songs that both George Jones and Elvis Presley recorded:
Song Title Year Recorded (Elvis/George)

Funny How Time Slips Away 1970/2005
Green, Green Grass Of Home 1975/1968
Love Coming Down 1976/1976

There Goes My Everything 1971/1966
Tomorrow Never Comes 1971/1972
Hope you enjoy :)
No one can make a guitar sing like Vince Gill can.
My very first concert was George Jones. My Grandparents took me. This was in the 90s when George was newly into his soberity and my Grandaddy was worried he might slip. He had many slips by then and had earned himself the nickname "No-show Jones". I'm pleased to say he did show up and was stone-cold sober. It was a heck of a show. I got to hear "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" live! Best day ever for little me since I also got to see Tracy Lawrence.
I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this but Vince wrote this song for his brother who died from cancer. A dear friend sang this song at my stepfather’s funeral. Not a dry eye in the church.
I'm crying. Every time I see this.
Patty and Vince have sung several duets together over the years.
Vince Gill took over on the Eagles goodbye tour after Glenn Frey died. He is one heck of a guitar player, and a singer. Love your show.
Vince and Patty are both wonderful artists and always sound so great together
you can see patty, keeping her eye on vince to see if he is still ok, it's as if she knew when to jump in and carry the song for vince and i especially loved when she got closer to vince towards the enf as if she just wanted to give him a great big hug, vince started writing this song when his freind Keith Whitley died and wasn't finished until his brother died, it's also great to see Garth Brooks stand up and the others follow suit to show vince they supported him, the solo was improvised so vince could regain his composure
Vince Gill is THE GOAT!!!!! He is partly responsible for my husband and I getting together! My husband told me he thought of me when he heard the song, "Whenever You Come Around," and I fell in love with him AND Vince Gill!!!
Vince is one the best guitars player around, he has so many guitars when he is live on stage..
Their voices are amazing together.
Vince & Patty were singing at George Jones funeral at the Opry house.
George Jones the org king of country absolutely loved Vince and Patty he was as much as a fan as he was a friend to them.
That was Trisha Yearwood and garth brooks that stood up 1st. Nancy George's wife was in the 1st row in front if them. Long time friends. George lived Patty's for many years and made a song for her. Vince was friends with George since Vince started singing.
Vince Gil is amazing - he actually toured some with the Eagles - he’s so dang talented
Vince Gill started this song when his brother passed away and finished when it when Keith Whitley(beautiful songs) and took him a year to record it. That’s why he says “he wasn’t afraid of the rain” Keith sang a song about the rain.
George Jones was one of the best..and the tribute from Sweet Pea brought everyone to tears..
No matter how amazing the voice and words, instruments are a true song to the heart. Before lyrics, music no one understands at this time. Makes you take a second look at Beethoven amongst so many others! How times have changed
Since the very beginning of our kind, we sat around a fire and expressed our Love, Anger, Joy and aspirations through song. Many can write a song (almost by formula) but, few - very few can put down in words what our innermost thoughts can possibly convey. It is said that God bestowed a song of truth within everyone of us.... we simply need to unshackle and let it out as a profound gift to the world. I particularly like the medical definition of aspiration : 'The action or process of drawing breath...' This song was started, but, never finished. Though this song was written for a previous sad occasion, Vince was inspired to finish it after the loss of his older brother....
Here's a little known fact...Vince Gill is one of the greatest guitarist alive.... as a matter of fact Mark Knopffler, the Lead Guitarist of the group called 'Dire Straits.' saw Vince's talent and even ask him to become a member of their group. Now that's a compliment above all others... Fortunately, Vince respectfully declines and rightfully so, as he continued on his own journey to greatness.
Vince eventually achieved greatness and the rest is 'history.'
Vince is a wonderful guitarists pure poetry, he collaborates with Keith urban, and Chris Stapleton live playing Keith’s song “blues not your color” no vocals till the very ending. Just 3 guys playing live and having fun on stage showing their skills. A must see
The first time I heard Vince Gill, my grandfather had recently passed away. His voice was so similar to my Grandpa's singing voice that I had to pull over on the side of the road.
OH MY GOSH ,SO GLAD I RAN ACROSS YOU AND YOUR BEAUTIFUL WIFE, NO DOUBT YOU ARE AN AMAZING PERSON AND ❤ 💖 AGAIN WHAT A PLEASURE LISTENING TO YOU . GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY 👪
George is a legend, was a troubled but loved despite his faults as we all should be and as the Father loves us. Thanks
George Jones song "who's going to fill their shoes". Played this at my Dad's memorial. Love love love it!
Vince Gill, the Guitar Slinger, is always top notch class act. One of the best songwriters in country music, and I mean REAL country. Not the shit you hear today.
He really knocks out lead solos. And his voice!❤
Both are legends, but Patty is in a class of her own. The musicianship to instantly take over
I have watched so many reviews of this amazing performance. You are the ONLY one who "got it".
Written by Vince when his brother died. A very personal song. Vince is married to Amy Grant, a Christian singer. He's one of the best guitar players of this generation. He has a problem in this video because he's so emotional. He has an amazing voice when not so choked up. BTW, Vince has been traveling recently with the Eagles!!!!
George always had a special name for his buddy Vince, called him sweet pea. They were very close.
Vince Gill wrote this song years ago when his brother died. Now it's everywhere. Played it at my husband's funeral
Vince wrote this song after his bother passed away. Never a more beautiful voice and talent for the guitar as there is in Vince Gill. His song, Whever You Come Around, was partly responsible for me marrying my husband! LOVE his music! He's really a all around great guy!
Love Vince & Patty love this song beautiful
Aren’t you glad you got to listening to country music. Just love you and Ali and your love for each other and your girls
George Jones was a great friend 😢to Vince Gill. George had had a nickname for Vince was "Sweet Pea". George had a nickname "The Possum" .
