The best part of the video is how Patty knows when she needs to take over, and does it without missing a beat, then she falls into the backgrounds effortlessly. She’s amazing.
My father heard this song two weeks before passing away. I'd always prayed my daddy would get saved from the mind that messed him up in WWII. Daddy had been in rehab for 7 months and I went every night except for one. I made sure he ate and was tucked in. You see my daddy had always been a angry man from seeing his best friends being blown to pieces in WWII and he couldn't forgive himself for having to shoot ppl to survive so their fore he thought God wouldn't forgive him. He heard this song like I said and made sure I knew he loved it. Daddys life was changed and daddy found peace before he died around 2 weeks before he passed. I made sure this song was played at his funeral. I'd prayed for my daddys salvation since I was a child and to let the world know it's Gods timing when answering our prayers not ours. Daddy died in 2009 and I'm 52 now so trust me don't stop praying and believing. God has got you.
I went to see Vince at the Ohio State Fair three weeks after his Father (a federal judge in Columbus) had died. I truly thought he would cancel. This was the last song he sang and half way through it he broke down and couldn’t finish. Everyone at the concert stood and sang the rest of the song while he played his guitar and cried. There wasn’t a dry eye leaving his concert. I will never forget it.
I grew up in the 60s an 70s. It was a great time for music. I saw almost every pop and rock singer and band of that era in concert. But it was in the late 80s that I attended a midweek concert in a small theater on the campus of Pacific University in Stockton, California. Apparently, the bands were going from the Bay area down to the L.A. area and booked this show in between. It was at least 4 hours and maybe even 5 hours long. Place might have held a thousand people and there were empty seats. Seems country struggles for an audience on Wednesday night. Show started with Merle Haggard. Then came Conway Twitty. George Jones finished it off. Imagine those 3 legends in a small little place playing and singing like there were 50,000 of us. And this is the God's honest truth. I have not been to a single concert since. Coincidence? I'm still not sure. I am sure of this. If I get a chance to see Vince Gill, I'll be there.
@@bullfrogger1208When we lived in Honolulu, we hopped a plane to Maui to see Vince, as we were starved for some country music, lol. He was there to golf, mostly, but played a small concert at a hotel, where we all just sat on blankets on the grass in front of a small stage. He was amazing, he sounds better live than in the radio. And he’s legit hilarious. Good times.
Now you’ve seen the real Patty Lovelace. That’s what my grandmother would call a woman with a steel backbone, because Lord knows she probably wanted to cry as well. This one brings me to tears every time.
Vince wrote this to honor his brother and his brother in music Kieth Whitley. This funeral was open to the public. You should react to Alan Jackson singing he stopped loving her today at George's funeral
i couldnt watch this after the initial showing for years. i knew Sweet Pea wouldnt make it thru..like me. Patty thank u. You held it all up. We miss you Possom
Patty carried Vince - true friend having his back, see her watching him like a hawk Front row - first persons to stand are Garth Brooks, and his wife Trisha Yearwood - also having Vince’s back in a big way
Vince had to do a longer guitar solo in order to gain his composure. He looked up to George and they had a strong bond. That was George’s family crying in the front of the audience. Heartfelt reaction!
Patty did such a phenomenal job of watching him and knowing when to harmonize and when to take the lead. These two perform such awesome music together. This was a true blessing ❤️🙏
This was song at my son's funeral eight months ago. This is the first time I've been able to listen to it since then. The words totally apply to him. I praise God he is singing his heart out in heaven now. This is a powerful song.

Then you'll understand why it was so hard for Vince to get thru it. He was very close to George "opossum" Jones. This song was played at both my parents funerals, while carrying them to the grave site.

My dad used to say to me, and I've told my son many times. "Live your life so that when you die, people are lining up to carry your casket". I've made many mistakes in my life, but I'm living my life trying to be a shining light of GOD's love.
I love EVERY duet they’ve ever done together!❤ Pocket Full of Gold, When I Call You Name and this one are my favorites!! Vince’s voice has become graveling since he joined The Eagles.
Little known back story to this, aside from the original meaning of this song and Vince's affection for George Jones, he said on a podcast that it was hearing Patty sing that broke him up. He hadn't gotten to sing with her in a few years and it just hit him like a ton of bricks, so he had to do that long solo to get himself together.
This was my brother Steve's favorite song...in 1996 he died from cancer...this song was played at his funeral, to this day everytime I hear it, I break down...in a good way...thanks for reacting to it
Vince Gill is one of the best performers I’ve ever seen. He wrote this for his brother who passed away in 1993. What a loving tribute. The emotion just comes straight through to your heart.
Vince is the nicest person I’ve ever met. He and my brother were breakfast buddies for a few years. When I called Vince to tell him my brother was near death, he was at the house in 20 minutes, tears streaming down his face to say goodbye. ❤
Vince Gill started to write this song when country singer Keith Whitley died in 1989. Vince finished writing the song after his brother Bob died in 1993.
The best part of this video is when Vince is emotional during parts of the song, yet he sings through his instrument. Patty Loveless is a champion, as usual. I wasn't really a George Jones fan until I saw Vince break down on this version of this song. Vince actually pours his heart out with his instrument! I've never heard a guitar actually sing until this moment, it made me a fan of George, and a bigger fan of Vince. Every guitar enthusiast needs to hear what Vince did here. Unable to sing, but quite able to express his emotions with his instrument! A beautiful moment, and a great tribute to an American country classic icon of country music. Well done sweet pea!
George was a hero of Vince's, and most country singers of his generation. They were also good friends. George nicknamed Vince "Sweet Pea." George said Vince sang too pretty to have all those hits. You need to hear the version of this live from Carnegie Hall with Ricky Skaggs and Alison Krauss on the harmonies. It's otherworldly gorgeous.
The fact when Vince was overwhelmed and soloed thru to compose himself, Patty stepped up strong and carried it. But the attendees standing in respect for a struggling brother hit me hard
One of the saddest songs written as an honor to his late brother. Vince was one of the young artists to back up George Jones early in his career. George was a mentor aside from one of the best Country voices in history.
Vince has deep Profound love for his family, God, and country music. When he's choked up it's hard not to be moved by it. He is the golden voice to country music, Patty Loveless in my opinion is the Queen of country music.
Vince Gill is an amazing guitarist. George Jones always called him "sweetness". Vince was such a fan of George's. True respect. I can't believe he was able to sing this song at this time.
A note about when the audience started standing up, those country legends themselves. I can only imagine what Vince Gill and Patty Loveless, the honor they felt, been supported from the floor, by some of the industry’s most well-known and well loved artists. This song has given so many, so much comfort through the years.
You have to understand that he began writing this for Keith Whitley, and didn't finish it. When his brother died because of his addiction, he picked it back up and finished it. Beautiful song that comes with so much pain. I love this song.
Vince Gill is one of the best guitarists in Nashville. Along with that voice and his ability to cross genres, that's why the Eagles asked him to tour with them. His older brother died young and his friend singer Keith Whitley ("When You Say Nothing At All") died of alcoholism, and Vince wrote this in honor of both of them.
Vince started writing this song when country artist Keith Whitley passed from alcoholism, early into his career. The last few lines of the first verse "You weren't afraid to face the devil, you were no stranger to the rain" was a direct reference Keith's song "I'm No Stranger to the Rain". Vince didn't finish the song until a few years later, when his brother passed away. I think he ended his own life. In recent years, I think Vince added another final verse to the song, but I can't remember it.
Vince wrote this song after his bother passed away. Never a more beautiful voice and talent for the guitar as there is in Vince Gill. His song, Whever You Come Around, was partly responsible for me marrying my husband! LOVE his music! He's really a all around great guy!
The late Charlie Daniels gave an awesome eulogy at this memorial. He had a great line about the "cookie-cutter sameness" that you see in "country" music today that caused the audience to cheer loudly. Ironically, I watched the livestream of Charlie Daniels' funeral where Vince sang this song solo.. So in a weird indirect way, it's almost like Charlie Daniels witnessed Vince perform a song at his own funeral.
I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this but Vince wrote this song for his brother who died from cancer. A dear friend sang this song at my stepfather’s funeral. Not a dry eye in the church.
The first line is about Keith Whitley who died in 1989, the second line is about Vince’s Bob who died from a heart attack in 1993. Many people overlook that the 1st verse is about Keith Whitley. His death had a profound effect on the country music community, especially Vince Gill.
George Jones, legend yes!! Listen to "HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY.. I HOPE YOU "ZEB" continue your country journey.. we all live what our country singers sing... Love you and your beautiful wife.
No matter how many times I watch this performance, never fails, I cry. Hard. When Garth stands and everyone follows suit, I start sobbing 😭 God bless the country music family, always. Oh and this is especially touching if you know that Vince Gill had a close friendship with George, who endearingly nicknamed him “Sweet pea”. 😭
Vince is know as a great vocalist as well as a great guitarist. He won Male Vocalist of the Year, on multiple occasions. He has a RUclips channel where he invites people into his house for jam sessions and to just sit around and talk.
Vince is above and beyond when it comes to guitar playing, and he's played across all genre's. After his 20+ years of Country Music, Vince has now been with the Eagles for the last few years...he's an amazing writer, vocalist and picker. He wrote this song when his brother died, its very personal to him. But you should check out the official video...the harmonies between Vince, Patty and Ricky Skaggs are beautiful. Vince and Patty have sang together quite a bit over the years, their voices go so well.
There was an interview done a few years ago and Vince Gill said that this performance was one of the hardest in his career. George jones was loved by so many and was and still is an inspiration to so many in the country music industry. This song by itself is powerful and inspirational but this exact performance was on a whole different level! All time greatest!
This was beautiful to watch the raw emotion, but I highly recommend going back and watching another version… goosebumps with the beautiful harmonies ❤️
George had his in six decades I believe. He was a staple of country music. Kieth Whitney was a star as well. This is a powerful song. I believe it was written to express his pain in the loss of his brother and Kieth Whitney. The performance of this at George Jones funeral is amazing by Patty Loveless and Vince Gill is amazing.
Being a huge fan of all three people (George, Vince and Patty), this version of this song hits me particularly hard. The song always brings me to tears because it reminds me of the loved ones I have lost.
I do believe that is a funeral at the Grand Ol' Opry. He wrote that about his brother and was singing it at a funeral of a dear friend and fellow musician. It was powerful for everyone there including him. He buried his pain in the solo to get though it. So moving and powerful. There is no shame in showing emotions. It makes you human.
Vince wrote this for his brother. He and George had a special bond. Patty and Vince are cousins. You should check out When I Get Home by Vince. Patty sings backup on that track as well.
Patty is not Vince’s cousin, they are just very, very close friends for over 35 years and did background singing on each other’s songs since the beginning of their careers.
@@terrybaby4vr thank you, I didn’t think I had ever heard that. Thank you for clearing that up. And yes they have sang background for each other for many years.
Also he wrote the first verse for his brother but never finished it I heard until Keith Whitley passed. The second verse “You were no stranger to the rain” is a direct reference to Keith’s “No Stranger to The Rain” Seb….you should add Keith Whitley to your list and one of my favorite George Jones songs…I don’t need your rocking chair.
My family plays this song at EVERY funeral. Doesn’t matter how well I’ve managed to keep it together, this song makes me ugly cry as soon as I hear the first note. Watching your journey into country music has been enjoyable and YOUR unapologetic Christianity is refreshing. Thanks for sharing them with us.
I am sitting here crying eyes out listen to this. My nephew died last night from an overdose. Like Vince brother lost his brother. This help a little now he can have peace at last.
This song is now used in a lot of funeral services, especially here in the South. It was played at my little sister's funeral a few years ago. Vince was broken up because the song was written for his brother that died a few years before.
What a totally wonderful job She did of stepping up when his voice faltered too much yet letting him try his best to hold it together and go on. If you want to hear them both in strong voice and harmony, check out When I Call Your Name.
🤘😎🤘 Great Reaction. Much like the genre of Metal... Country Music is a family. When one dies, especially legends, the whole genre is affected. Such an amazing and heartbreaking performance.
This reminds me of my Dad's funeral. In 2004. He was only 53, he died of brain cancer. I cannot remember a sadder day. My daughters called him the night before to say goodbye, and give phone kisses to grandpa. He died three A.M with his dog Sleepy by his side. He moved away from us to Pennsylvania, a long way away from Woodstock Il. where we were living.
I wish people would've had you get familiar with George Jones before reacting to this. Might've made it more impactful, as it was to those of us who know both well. There's a different upload of this performance where Vince tells a funny story about him and George Jones involving ravioli, before his performance.
Yes yes yes! Been waiting on this one. My favorite duet with these 2 is"When I call your name" it's in the upvoty thing, but it needs all of you to go upvote it

Aw, man.. I wish people would've requested a different version first, so he could appreciate the beautiful 3-part harmonies in this song.
Same here.. This was a emotional one but you got to hear the full song and the words to really hear how great this song is..
George called Vince Sweet Pea
My friend sang this for me at Mom's memorial
George Jones nicknamed Vince Gill Sweet Pea!
Vince Gill wrote this song years ago when his brother died. Now it's everywhere. Played it at my husband's funeral
Hard. When Garth stands and everyone follows suit, I start sobbing 😭
God bless the country music family, always.
God I'm bawling, even sitting here watching on a screen, it's crazy!😢
Vince is above and beyond when it comes to guitar playing, and he's played across all genre's. After his 20+ years of Country Music, Vince has now been with the Eagles for the last few years...he's an amazing writer, vocalist and picker. He wrote this song when his brother died, its very personal to him. But you should check out the official video...the harmonies between Vince, Patty and Ricky Skaggs are beautiful. Vince and Patty have sang together quite a bit over the years, their voices go so well.
Not sure if original member but one of Vince's first bands was Nitty Gritty Dirt band
All the best come from Oklahoma! Vince is one of the best guitarists of all time!
Vince is one of the finest guitar players America has produced..
Agreed
I didn’t know patty is his cousin! Thank you telling us that!
@@vhurd4996 my pleasure
Patty is not Vince’s cousin, they are just very, very close friends for over 35 years and did background singing on each other’s songs since the beginning of their careers.
@@terrybaby4vr thank you, I didn’t think I had ever heard that. Thank you for clearing that up.
And yes they have sang background for each other for many years.
Also he wrote the first verse for his brother but never finished it I heard until Keith Whitley passed. The second verse “You were no stranger to the rain” is a direct reference to Keith’s “No Stranger to The Rain”
Seb….you should add Keith Whitley to your list and one of my favorite George Jones songs…I don’t need your rocking chair.
There are times when us mere humans need to cry. For those of us who were so hardened by life, God gave us Vince Gill.
Vince and Patty did a song in the 80's called, "When I Call your Name." Beautiful.
It’s SO AWESOME the way Patty is totally there and doesn’t even hesitate. They are SO AWESOME!!❤️
Vince and Patty are both wonderful artists and always sound so great together
This song is now used in a lot of funeral services, especially here in the South. It was played at my little sister's funeral a few years ago. Vince was broken up because the song was written for his brother that died a few years before.
I'm crying. Every time I see this.
You CANT go wrong with Vince Gill, his voice still gives me the goosebumps 😊❤
What a totally wonderful job She did of stepping up when his voice faltered too much yet letting him try his best to hold it together and go on.
If you want to hear them both in strong voice and harmony, check out When I Call Your Name.
This is best goodbye song in world. Played at my little brother's funeral!
Their voices are amazing together.
This was played at my grandpa's funeral, it still makes me ugly cry
Hi there. Have to listen each day possible
Yes yes yes! Been waiting on this one. My favorite duet with these 2 is"When I call your name" it's in the upvoty thing, but it needs all of you to go upvote it
