this is an interesting job the price of the brushes and the holder is less then half that of a rebuilt starter i have found some good and BAD rebuild-ed starters even if the solenoid has to be replaced and the time to clean and oil the starter i think it is cheaper to rebuild just my thoughts thank you
This is not an easy job and is actually a pain in the ass. Getting the old starter out is difficult on many levels. The room to work is slim. My jeep is lifted and while I could access the bolts, if I didn’t have an adjustable ratchet there’s no way I could have maneuvered to get the bolts off. Then there’s the clip connector. Went to pop up the tab and it just broke. Got the connector off but now no red tab. Then there’s access in the final nut which I think holds the ground connection. Barely enough room to get a socket over it. Used a wrench and no room to use that Becusee of the plastic connector in the starter. Knowing the starter was going in the trash unused the wrench and just broke the connector. The metal piece was so tight that I needed a long screwdriver to pry it off the starter. Got it and then got the starter out. Easy road ahead right? Nope. lol. The positioning pin was stuck in the engine so I had to remove the pin from the new starter. Wouldn’t come out with vice grips. Had to use a torch then it came out. All in all, like anything, if I had to do it again it would be much easier. But it’s a deceiving repair for sure. Good news is the replacement fires right up. My old one was definitely worse. No ticking and it started but there was just a delay in turning over. New one is night and day.
Yah I feel that. 2 bolts and a few wires, no problemo. These are the kind of things that make me want to practice kicking field goals so I can kick the engineer who did this to the JK in the nuts so hard you can hear his ancestors cry. I've had to do this in the dirt on the side of the road then get a ride back home, get more tools, go back under it, and still it took forever and tons of cursing.
Definitely very easy. I do mine in under an hour. Unfortunately I’m about to do it for the 3rd time. I kept getting the Autozone starter. 1st lasted a year. 2nd lasted a little over a year. Same branded refurbished from Autozone. Let’s face it…they’re refurbished. This time I ordered one from online with nice reviews and I’m on it today. Do make sure you take those cables off!
Hey, I would like to get your opinion on rear shocks for my 1994 6cyl YJ with only a 2” body lift (so no lift according to the shocks needed). I will be towing a small trailer with many tools from South Carolina to Houston so I wanted to replace my rear original shocks. Tks for your help. -Mike
2011 has the 3.8, not the 3.6 Pentastar. 2012-2018 JK is the same as far as the starter.

I have a 2012 Jeep wrangler with 162000 km and watching the video, I think it's exactly the same problem I'm having this morning. I turn the key, I hear the click, but nothing. Everything works, the battery, no diagnosis with OBD2. Since I'm not equipped to make the change myself, especially seeing how little space there is to remove it, I sent it to the garage. I'm waiting for the diagnosis
Hey Dale! You run an amazing channel.🤩 We are Coverdo who is looking for collaboration for our new launched seat covers recently. I wonder do you have interest in trying our seat covers?😉
This was useless.. if you don't have a drill ... I have been trying to take my starter out and I have no room and can't remove the starter at all I had to buy a right angle for a drill..

Very helpful video. I managed to get 12+ years and 323,000 on the factory starter!
That's insane! Mine went out on my 2017 at 86k!
I have 10 years and 106,000 miles still going strong check your battery consistently
Ratcheting wrench set very useful tool to have in your toolbox
Nice work Dale, nothing is ever easy no matter how small the job is.
Yep. Every project is 1 broken bolt away from becoming a big ordeal. Haha!
The starter for a jku is the same in manual or automatic transmission
You didn’t jack it up on the axle tube did you? Trying to figure out where to jack it to achieve the same results
Another great video Dale!
Thanks again!
Great job my friend
Thank you!
Love the channel! I don’t see a link for the flexible wrench you used, can you add that?
Mine is older, but here is one very similar. Love it! Extendable Socket Wrench: amzn.to/2LJNV2k
@@JeepSolid Thanks much, just ordered it. Really appreciate your videos, super-helpful!

How many miles did you have when you replaced your starter? Great video!
You ever heard of a 1/4 ratchet and a deep socket, to remove that cable?
hi !Are you interested in testing new LED tail lights for JK ?

Had to do this today. Whoever installed that wiring made it miserable. Hardly any clearance to get the ring terminal off.
Love the no Bueno comment
Great vdeo
Hey you went from the YJ to the JK and skipped on of the best Jeep Wrangler the TJ. Just an observation lol
I have a 1998 jeep Cherokee the check engine light came on went auto zone it had code for a Tcm it run great what else can cause a tcm code help
Sorry, I don't have a ton of experience with auto transmissions
It was the gas cap light went off . Can low oil cause the check engine light to come on?
Great video! Just wish you would of shown the actual symptom before the replacement. Regardless thanks for sharing this!!!
Ah, yeah, sorry. You could hear the solenoid click, but wouldn’t turn engine over. Just a click 👍
@@JeepSolid no worries Dale! Thanks for doing what you do!
Too bad it wasn't the starter on your YJ. Those are so much easier to change. :D
Haha! So true
What about the starter heat shielding?
Is it in the same place for a 2015 ?
Should be. 2011-2017 are all basically the same.
2011 has the 3.8, not the 3.6 Pentastar. 2012-2018 JK is the same as far as the starter.

is it just me or did it look like he loosened that bolt!
Drop the drive shaft. 5 minutes worth of work. Makes the rest of the job much easier.
2017 wrangler no crank no start. No codes.??????
Oof. I am continually reminded how spitefully designed the jeep is every time i need to swap a part.

What was useless? Hope the video helped. I was able to do this just as shown in the video.
