- I use Roland JC-120 (1983) for cleans and Diezel VH4 for rhythm (channel 3) and solo (channel 4). There is also Line6 XT Pro (delay and reverb) in the game with channel 4 and Xotic BB Preamp in front of signal chain with channel 3...
Why are so many people hating on this guy for having high quality gear, and not being the best player? Like he has not earned the right to own it. If he has a passion for the guitar, and likes to own nice things, is that not enough? He obviosly earned the money to buy this gear, should he have a fucking Squire Affinity, and a Dean Markley amp, becuase he is not the best player? Get real. Play what excites you, play what you can afford. Bravo man. Good fucking on you.

Becuase you can. I am not that good, and I am having a very nice archtop built right now. Becuase that is what I want to spend my money on. My brother's wife's brother has 3 Kent Luarence guitars exactly the same, like the one above. Why? I think it is silly, but he has plenty of cash, so why not.
+Pete Haselden Agreed. Also having expensive gear is a good thing. If something is attractive to you, and no matter the price or whatever you're inclined to go and play with it. In this case, having a KL explorer replica is cool. As is having a Diezel VH4, your choice what you spend your money on to be honest.
If a player isn't good enough, there is no point on wasting money on needlessly advanced equipment, unless he knows for certain he will improve in the near future.
Without the necessary skill, a player won't be able to make use of the extra tonal possibilities given by the expensive technology.

Quite simple, people feel insecure with their own gear and feel the need to attack someone else. Pretty standard.
James's clean sound will forever be my fav clean sound, ever.

So does it have to be the JC120 or does the JC40 provide the same sound and tone only at a lower volume??
Jason Reynolds it should be pretty damn close the jc120 is just gonna have more headroom for when you turn up so at lower volume the jc40 should do the trick

Think about everything you could play, you could use the diezel VH4 for tool with the les paul custom or play some nice clean tones on the JC, he has a great selection of amps for just about anything!!!
Jake Schneider to be honest, the VH4 has some really good cleans, so the JC-120 might be a bit overkill.
Maybe, but listen to that clean tone. It’s the same amp metallica has always used for cleans and as you can hear, NAILS it without much effort at all tweaking wise. It’s the “Metallica Clean Tone Amp.”
everyone needs to chill he isnt bad. he isnt the best but hes pretty good. And if someone has money to buy that kinda gear then they can. IMO buy whatever gear makes you want to play more.

Well there so many more reasons on why you will never be or sound like your idol!....but one day you realize that time starts to pass you by faster and faster each day, now if you can afford it.... why on earth would you not at least try and feel the gear that your idols uses? if that is something that makes you happy?....is it bacause Calptons guitar tech told you that you will never be or sound like him?
@Thomas Ashworth The amp modeler is in bypass mode. I use just effects. Swapping between amps I use A/B switch and VH4 channels I use Boss GT-10 as a midi switch. Yes, its Nimes.

I'm also a Metallica Fan, but I'm young, and before considering buying expensive gear, I learn to play as much as possible as them, I place my hand exactly like James does ( hold the pick with 3 fingers and let the others down etc.. ), all those small things are also part of being a fan, buy all their stuff is not a prouve of high skilled player.
But youre lucky to have all of that ^^

but the diezel vh4 can get you there current live tone and death magnetic and st anger tone
but for all the older shit its in the mark v
including the later tones !
dont get me rong the diezel vh4 is a great amp but the mark v in my opinion is everyplayers dream amp !

Wow! You have the chance to have a Ken Laurence Explorer if it's not a copy. Your tone are perfect.. You used the Reverb from the JC-120 when you play clean tone, not a exterbal Reverb. James choice this amp justment for the '' unique '' Reverb from this amp. If you want a veru good effect, pass to TC electronic G-Major2 or Nova System like me. Better than the G-Major2 because the effects of the Nova come to the TC G-system, 2000$ pieces. It's the Pure effects. No modelisation, no simulation. Effect analog types. The Nova are 799$CAN or 600$US. and the Nova System are a pedalboard. We can control amp and effects just with the Nova. Me tto, before, I worked with 2 Amp, one for the Clean, one for the saturation (65 Fender Twin Reverb & Peavey 6505 212 USA). No MIDI on each, I've programmed my Nova for the presets of Clean exit only the right output jack and he plug on my Fender and for the High Gain, i use the left output jack to the 6505. That all and efficace. On the program setting on the Nova, in the end of the chain, he has a Pan of Volume Left and Right. When a make a preset, i program the Pan too for what Amp, the preset are destined. But now, i work with one Amp, a Mesa Dual Rectifier '' re-born model '', the last generation with the Clean from the Lone Star (the Fender of Mesa) and mod my head a change the tubes original for a specifics tubes for to have my own tone for my album recording and also, to make a various Metallica tones, old and new. The Metallica tone are always more closed of EL34 than the 6L6. Of KEA to Black album, they used a Marshall head for KEA, RTL and a Mesa Mark 2C+ for MOP, Justice and Black Album with a Mark 4. The Mark 2C+ or the 4 have two 6L6 and two EL34. In studio, they mix yout Main Amp with a Marshall Plexi amp like the JTM-45 for have more frequency wide tone and a better sound. In 1988, he introduced the Roland JC-120 because James love the unique Reverb (spacial) and the tone of this Clean Amp. Before, the Clean tone coming to Mark 2C+ or Marshall. For Justice, James using the JC-120 with or without Reverb + the Mark 2C+ and Kirk, the Mark 2C+/Marshall JTM-45 mk2. In 1995, they indroduced a Mesa Triple Rectifier and Triaxis preamp because he has a few Mark models. In 2003, the Diezel VH4 but St-Anger are not recording with the Diezel. The Diezel come for the tour. It's not the same gears in studio vs live. Now, on the actuely tour, they used a Fractal Axe FX2 XL+ preamp & Matrix Poweramp suppose for have the original tone for each song they playing. Never, i was think than Metallica change our Tubes Amp Rack for a modelisation preamp and silid state Poweramp. Never. Congrulation for your Ken Lawrence Explorer and change the Boss, Line 6 effect for a TC electronic.

How are you using the pod effects through your VH4? Is the pod set on a clean channel and going through your effects loop or something? Anyways your set up sounds really nice cant go wrong with a JC120 for clean tones.

You just won a fu(%!#g subscriber. Thats what happens when youve got good gear, are actually good and have people that listen to you. I unfortunatly have or possess none of the above, a man can dream though..... BTW flawless!! Love the amp, both actually. Wish I could afford even the shit that these amps take, like ENGL or Rivera, or the amp that shits these, Boogie and HIGH END Marshall.

I have few questions i would be grateful if you could answer. The Line6 XT Pro you say you use for Reverb and delay? How isnt it an amp modeler? Also how do you swap between amplifiers and channels of the VH4 on the same footswitch? + is this the nimes peformance?
@Pirre1981 Please answer :) Is it the Boss pedal you use to change between your Roland and Diezel? 'Cause im thinking of getting myself a Roland, and maybe have a distortion amp also, instead of a pedal that also gets the chorus effect when i would switch that on..

Hey man, how is the gt 10 through the jc 120? Are the PREAMPS good, and are the od/d's sounds good through the amp. Also is it good for acoustic PREAMPS or acoustic guitars. I have a gt10 and love it but can't get an amp to match what a hear through the headphones

To be a good guitar player you dont wanna sound exacly as you idol. But it is a nice sound
@Masterfighterx: Have u seen many ? wow.. dude.. there is NOT many real KL explorers out there so how is it possible u have seen many KL explorers.. ? Send Ken Lawrencen an email and ask how many explorers he have made.. and he will say that there is a few of em out there.. but there is MANY great KL copys out there.. and they look almost like the real one.. :D

Try VSTs like Bias Fx, It is not the same as one expensive and good amp but you can get REALLY good tones.

Te clean and solos part were awesome, but u messed the no one but me rif, there's no palm muting while doing fast triplets and you're playing wrong notes, but im sure you know about that already
