Avocados do not ripen even after staying on the tree for 18 months as long as they are attached to the tree stalk. I think that is the reason why its so difficult to find ripe avocados. All the ripe ones that we find are ripened during transportation or in stores
Keeping the Avo in the dark, is what works! I just select mine slightly under ripe, take them home put them in a drawer in my kitchen. Following day, or day after, ripe and ready to eat. No fuss, simples! Thanks
I have several avocado trees, this time of year we get a lot of them, but they take ages to ripe. What I found to work is rather simple, and quite fast. 1) Cut avocado in half ( 2 pieces). 2) Wrap each half in several layers of saran wrap, make sure it's water tight. 3) Put both (half) pieces into the microwave, microwave them for 2 minutes standard power. 4) Put the avocado, still wrapped, into a bowl of cold, even ice, water. Let sit, than enjoy! Takes less than 5 mins.
I know, right?!?! I put one avocado out on it's own and it would have been perfectly ripe in 5 days (they were REALLY green) but it was still lovely to eat after 4. It seemed like both methods with the paper bags helped shave a day off the ripening time, but it was no 'miracle hack' that's for sure. Someone has mentioned putting an avocado in a plastic bag, so maybe I'll give that a try next. Thanks for your comment :)
Karen O'Connor it's true but here weren't regular in ripe avocados... They were freaking GREEN. Even in the grocery store, they're at least normal color. Mine never take more than 2 days in the bag with an apple or banana. Usually they're ready the next day but I forget

Wrap them in a plastic/paper bag, put that bag in a bowl, and put that bowl in a place that gets no sunlight, like a cupboard. Two nights, and mine went from green and hard to ripe and ready. Also, when you’re pressing an avocado to see whether it’s soft, press near the top so you’re not squishing the nice part

Hi, any suggestion on how to deal with underripe avocado that was cut open? it's hard & crunchy & not as yummy as ripe... in fact, do not really taste good.
I put green bananas ( green bananas ripen by the peel giving off Ethylene gas) at the bottom of a fruit bowl and my avocado's on top for a steady supply through the week, you could also cover the bowl to speed up the process

Hello, You can easily ripen an avocado by putting it into uncooked rice for a few days or can use a brown paper bag to ripen in a few days should be perfect! I always let the avocados I pick from our tree ripen by itself on kitchen counter top with no direct sun and in about 3 to 4 days the avocados are rip. I like eating avocados on the firm side vs soft, hate soft avocados!
The avocados from our tree take 5 to 6 days to ripen & they are large avocados unlike the small green ones you can buy in market & heavy in weight. Taste like butter almost with a bit of sweetness and taste like an avocado should, yummy! I wish you folks could try them, you would absolutely love them.
Peggy Pirtle we would love to try yours. What climate do you live in. We also would love to grow our own. We get hot weather May thru Sept but have a good 3 months of freezing weather that I don’t think they would like.
Try modifying your flour method. Put a much larger amount of flour in a plastic container. Next, put the avocado in the flour, totally imbedding the avocado, totally surrounded by the flour. The totally hard avocado might totally ripen in 24 hours. Your paper bag method does have enough flour to totally surround the avocado with the flour.
I’m about to try that put I’m putting a wet paper towel on the part I cut open then wrapping it in tinfoil setting the oven to 300 and I’ll wait ten minutes see how it goes
Thanks. I just bought 10 avocados for $10 but they are really hard. Going to put some in paper bag with apple and put in window. Others just in window .
they said that you had let the avocado get cool after taking out of the oven but I will try it now cause i have to do sushi lol / but living in the islands it is common that leaving the avocado out on the table for 4 days it will get ripe- but i learned a lot through your experiment- thank you
We left an avocado on a stainless steel table, it went bad really fast, we're wondering if the steel had anything to do with it like dissipating the temperature in an unnatural way.
I heat mine in the microwave for 1:45-2 mins then wait for it to cool down . Similar to the oven method but i would not try it hot or else it will of course not taste nice
My issue is I'll buy it green and in 4 days or so they get black but never soft. So I give it a few more days, and still rock hard. Then when I open them up they are brown inside, rotten, still hard and taste terrible. I had tried the window sill, the brown bag and window sill but without luck. So my method was if they turn black and soft, I enjoy, as they are usually great. If they get black and still hard I cook right away, no extra time. I agree they are not great that way, but I'm not throwing them out as they get rotten. After your video though I am going to try the brown bag with the flour. I hope it works, thanks.
I cut mine in half, the side that doesn't have the pit I wrap it in plastic wrap, put in the microwave for 2 minutes. Then put it in a bowl of ice water until its completely cold and no longer cooking. If you need the whole avocado 🥑 pull the pit out of the other side and do the same thing.
I just tried making them softer! To make Guacamole. How i done it was? Put them into the micro wave 2 min. If its not soft. Put back another 2 min. I got tried of every day squeezing them roll them around and trying to bruise them.. Hey it worked! The guacamole was darker green >> but hey it worked
The oven works if the temp. is pre-heated to 200 f ( NOT 400 f, that cooks it)---15 to 25 min depending on the size of the fruit...don't take off the foil until it is totally cooled (this is where the gas in the avocado does the work to ripen it)...works best on darker fruit that is still VERY hard ...take care...thanks for your video.
I need to ripen an avocado in a few minutes 😭 if i had one wish, i would wish groceries sold ripened avocados
An no brainier for markets, 50 cents unripe, $1+ ripe
groceries can't do it because they get avocado in very different conditions, mostly unripe. Why? Because it is necessary condition for transportation.
