    HOW TO PICK AN AVOCADO
    Our top tip is to make sure the stem is still attached at the top.
    Why? Once that stem is removed the avocado is exposed to air and the air gets inside the avocado and causes browning. This is why you sometimes see an avocado have brown flesh inside on the top, but the rest of the avocado is a beautiful green.
    Anytime there’s air exposed to the avocado it will cause browning so this tip goes for picking out a ripe avocado or an unripe avocado.
    fresh avocados cut in half showing a ripe avocado and overripe avocado
    Does this mean you can’t buy any without it? No, but you do run the risk of having some browning on your avocado flesh.
    HOW TO PICK A RIPE AVOCADO
    A ripe avocado will give in to a little pressure, it will almost feel like a squishy stress ball, but not as soft. It should have a darker green color, whereas an unripe avocado will have a lighter green color.
    You do not want to see any dryness or indentations, a dry and hard avocado that is dark green is no longer good.
    HOW TO PICK OUT AN UNRIPE AVOCADO
    Not everyone needs ripe avocados, so if you need one that isn’t quite ripe yet go for one that is a bright green color and should be very firm.

    I tried avocado once, but based on what you said, I definitely left it too long. It was nasty lol. I have no idea how to pick a good avocado. I'll use your tips, and try to pick a good one again. I want to give avocado 1 more try, since I think I messed up tasting it last time. I just grabbed one, but didn't get to trying it for a little over a week.

    Always get the bright green ones so you know there’s no bruising from ppl squeezing it cuz you know everybody squeezes the dark ones. Let it sit on your countertop for 4-7 days and your good to go!

    NO MORE WAITING FOR AVOCADOS TO GET RIPE! This is how i do them hard ones! To make them softer! Put them into the micro wave 2 min. If its not soft. Put back another 2 min. I got tried of every day squeezing them roll them around and trying to bruise them.. Hey it worked! The guacamole was darker green >> but hey it worked

HEY ITS GREAT 👍👍 i just started doing this Last week, is how i know. I started out 30 second in the micro way, and it wasn't long enough. So just up to 2 min one was just a little soft but yet hard > It WORK GREAT on that 1 for 2 min > Next one was hard as a rock. i put in there for 2 min. Was still hard. Put back another 2 min and it was perfect 👌👌😁😁

      You're welcome! Avocado + air = brown. This is why we always submerge our guacamole in water or use citrus juice to prevent it from browning.

      It depends if it’s just from bruising or oxidation. If most of the avocado is green inside we’ll just mash it together. You can also just scoop that little bit out and discard. If brown because bad, no, I’d toss.

    What about when avocados looks ripe but they never seem to get ripe enough to eat….ie rubbery one. I’ve heard it has to do with when they are picked and if picked too soon they may never ripen. Is there a way to avoid these at the store. I’ve wasted so much money buying these.😢

    • @KnowYourProduce
      @KnowYourProduce  Год назад +4

      This is why I usually only go for avocado from Mexico 😥 For some reason whenever we get them from Peru they're a hit or a huge miss. They can often be watery, rubbery, and just unpleasant. I love it creamy and soft. My top picks for brands are Mission or Avocados from Mexico.

    I grew up in southern California and my grandpa had an avocado tree and I grew up eating these 2-3 times a week.
    One thing to remember, is when they are ripening at your home, don't let them touch each other. They like to be alone. She is totally right about the stems. I always make sure they have their little thingy on them or I don't buy them.
    A method of making your avocados ripe quick, fast, and in a jiffy is by burying them in rice. NOTE: Much like produce, uncooked rice contains loads of ethylene gas, which helps push the process along. ENJOY!

    • @KnowYourProduce
      @KnowYourProduce  Год назад +1

      Ideally, wait for it to ripen. Or you can do it like Chipotle does and mash it with some ripe ones 😂 Sometimes you can refrigerate it to allow it to ripen, but it depends on how underripe the avocado is though.

    Some NEVER ripen. Even when left at room temperature for weeks. God knows what's going on with thee ones?! I usually go by the squeeze test. probably only 1/4 aren't over ripened at point of sale. In UK its very hard to find one which is truly 'ripe and ready to eat' as described.
    I've been trying to eat half to one every day for about 20 years. Some varieties are smaller and have a lighter green smoother skin. Not sure what their name is but they tend to be far more reliable and have a nicer taste IMO. I've had my colestoral tested a few times and always comes out vey low, in the super healthy bad fat fighting range. My GP asked what sort of diet I eat. It can be quite erratic, but almost always includes half - one avocado per day, 6 brazil nuts and 5 or 6 medjool dates for breakfast. I stopped eating meat around 7 years ago. Very occasional eat fish but don't really like it.

      I rarely find a good one ripe to eat, I instead buy them green and wait until ripe. I only buy ones from Mexico as well. I haven’t had found consistency with Peru.

    • @KnowYourProduce
      @KnowYourProduce  Год назад

      Without actually seeing your actual avocado I cannot tell you whether it would be safe to consume or not. If an avocado is exposed to air it will cause oxidation causing it to become brown. An avocado can spoil.
