    Your review is accurate and a good counterpoint. I had the 2019/20 Stormriders in 179cm until someone walked off with them last season. I hadn’t bought them new, I’d gotten a great deal on a pair of demos in excellent condition and was still skiing them with the demo binding.
    I blamed the ‘weight’ issue a little on the demo binding… and even then I wouldn’t use the word ‘heavy’, I’d use the word ‘solid.’ They’re not exactly light but they’re really well balanced and are a great groomer ski for 88mm. I agree that ‘80/20’ frontside/backside is exactly right… and that’s what I generally ski on a normal day, so I was really bummed to have them stolen. (Which is a thing to think about when buying high end skis.)
    I still have older model 100mm skis and 78mm skis that I like, but now I have a gap in my quiver and I’m in the market for a ‘daily driver’ in that width range. I’d consider buying another Stormrider, because I loved them, but not at retail price… and I’d also like something slightly more versatile for Colorado.
    I did love skiing the Stormriders on the groomers though, regardless of the snow conditions. They handle everything frontside like a German sports sedan.
    I demoed several skis at the end of last season, including the Maverick 88 and 95. I’d like to try the Declivity’s in both 88 and 92.
    I think you’re reviews are spot on! We’ve skied some of the same skis and I share most of your opinions so far. (But I’m also close to your size at 6’2, 200 lbs, and am a decent skier that learned on straight skis.)
    Keep it up! Ski season is fast approaching! 😎

      Thanks so much for your nice comment! Yes I loved my stormriders as well! Maybe I'll come by another pair of Stocklis along the way, but like you said I don't want to pay full price, so would probably have to be sourced from a ski swap or something. Thanks for commenting, and yes very excited for winter!

    By the specs the stormrider is only 70g heavier than maveric, so they fall into same weight category. Your experience is interesting, may be it felt heavier because of weight distribution (swing weight) or heavier bindings... btw, if you havent came across, there is nice ski comparison tool called sooth ski comparison tool, pretty interesting... Ive tested Stockli GC skis for 5 days in the glacier and really liked them , but could not justify the very high cost, but Im a dirt bag - all my skis are 300$ on the sale :) If I had money I would have something like stockli, there are rumors stockli skis produce special very pleasant sound when they bend :)

      Oh same! This has been my first year buying "new" (last years top sheets) but I totally love buying stuff on FB marketplace or ski swaps. It just happened to be that this year the end of year deals were better than my local used market. But the best part of having affordable skis is you can send it in the woods and be less stressed about core shots!

    • @daan260
      @daan260 11 месяцев назад +1

      Or maybe it's the long camber? It definitely has a more racing kind of shape and metal laminates, so I guess that makes them feel heavier.

  • @davehoover8853

    I totally agree that the myth of a one ski quiver is wrong, for any brand. The problem with your review is that you are on an old pair of Stockli’s that were very heavy and a bit planks. You need to get on a Laser SC and a Stormrider 95 and do a new review. They are much lighter now and ski west (Targhee) very well. I have to sweep at the end of the day and ski that Stormrider all day - past closing! Powder days are for other skis and yes, many brands are making great skis at a lower price. Stockli is well made, precise and durable. Re-sell is great too! However, my Stormrider 95’s are 8 years old and no plans to change.

      Totally true! My plan is to test them this year so they get a fair assessment. Just wanted to talk about them so that people can hear the mostly good, but also the few weaknesses I came across.
      Thanks for watching and for the nice comment!

    Have you ever tried the 102s? If not, any chance of a review?

      No, my local shop doesn't carry that width in their demo center, but I would love to test if I get the chance.

    Last year I demoed some Stormider 95s.. Before I even got them to the hill I saw that they were blown out at the heal.. I still did 6 runs.. When I returned them there was another pair of 95s that were blown out in the same location and a pair of 88s that were blown out in the same location.. I also went up the lift with someone who had a pair of 102s that were blown out in the same location.. I commented on one of Ski Essentials videos but did not get a response...
    The first pair of skis that I bought when I moved to Colorado in 2021 was a pair of 2016 Stormrider 88s. I have to tell this story.. Last year on the Friday of Presidents Day weekend I went skiing and traffic sucked and I got there really late and the lift was already packed.. I was in complete GO mode.. My first run was on a blue run that was basically green and I hit a lip on a headwall.. I flew 100 yards in the air (and yes I said that right).. I was 20 ft high in the air.. I landed on basically a flat and my legs gave out and I wiped out.. Somebody saw it and he is like "are you ok"? and I said !@#$ are these things fast.. That was the first day last year that I was on the skis.. Probably my 15th time skiing up to that point.. Those skis blow away anything else that I have.. The harder the surface the better they are.. Also there is a minimum speed limit to them.. I probably won't even use them until after the 1st of the year because that is when most of the hill opens up.. The skis aren't designed for a ton of people and tons of short turns.. The skis also work well with windblown snow.. I have been in bowls that have a good hard surface with some windblown snow that work really well.. It is the softer on top and crud underneath that I struggle with on those skis..

    • @darinsmith2458
      @darinsmith2458 11 месяцев назад

      Also.. I did slow down after that first run.. That day was too busy for those skis..
      I did buy a pair of 2019 Stormrider 105s that I think I used 2 times last season.. The snow conditions got so unpredictable and I did not want to wreck the skis.. But the 105s were really good on groomers and bowls and better than the 88s for when the snow got soft..

      That and I am now part of the Stockli club.. I skied with others on Stormriders and they all Rock.. I am looking forward to seeing them and being introduced to more in the club..

      That's awesome, Thanks for Sharing! I certainly like the skis, but as always, I think it's important for people to talk about any downsides future buyers might see, and for me the 2017's were a bit clunky, but I think they've brought the weight way down since then and I'm excited to demo some current gen skis this winter.

      @@RicketySkiReviews My guess is that the extra weight was making the ski more stable and without that stability that is why the skis break..

    I hope you appreciate that we never saw you ski and you do your videos in the summer when there is no snow. First, they are silent and smooth. You are more of a ferrari guy, many of us are mercedes guys. You can go as fast, handling is different, comfort is different. 88 is not a backcountry ski, it is a piste ski that charges through all sort of crud and junk. Perfect for us in the East, 6in powder, they are for gs turns, or slid short terms (hey, I am straight from the 80’s). So if you like to ski upright and hit the trees, moguls, spring, crud or lay down gs turns, they do a great job, other skis can do in a different manner. Budget? Well for some this is the last thing on their mind. These are dentist or physician skis, they change often, and don’t have time to ski that much. Get them lightly used…

    Well let's talk heavy: I was rocking 190cm GS Fischer RC4 GS skis with full race plates, all-in with boots it was 15 kg total or 7.5 kg per foot. Switching to any ski after that was like having feathers on the feet, but not as stable at crazy speed. Skiing "all day" is meaningless. My sister skis "all day" & gets like 2000 meters of vert, whereas I can blow through 12000-18000 meters in a day. So I have the Stöckli Stormrider 88 & I love them & one of the reasons is that they pay their employees a living wage. Do we want more luxury garbage produced by slaves or just average mass-produced garbage; or reasonable employment & a good product?

    Love your quirky reviews but, you mention the weight difference between the Stormriders and the Mavericks being your main issue?
    My research shows that the 184cm Mavericks are 1800g per ski, and the same length Sormriders are 1850g per ski. Only 50g between them.
    I am nowhere near your level of skiing but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference......
    Full disclosure ... I own a pair of Stormrider 102s which I LOVE!

    • @RicketySkiReviews
      @RicketySkiReviews  11 месяцев назад +1

      Awesome! It always makes me happy when people find skis they love: So I did some digging and according to ski magazine the 2017 model I owned actually weighed 3110 grams for the 177 and my 2023 Atomic Mavericks weigh 1800grams per the 184 model (I'm on the 176, so they're even a bit lighter). Now I could have missed something but anecdotally my mavericks do feel much lighter.
      That all being said I think I should try out some of the newer ones, because it seems that they've gotten significantly lighter in recent years from what I can see online.
      Thanks so much for your nice comment, I learned something insightful today!

    Curious if you've skied Kastles??? I always found they have a little more energy than stokli The m x series is awesome. But I actually prefer the slightly cheaper dx for all mountain. You can also find them on sale often. Is not un common to find a used set under five hundred dollars.

      No I haven't, but they are definitely on my list! Any recommendations on the most flagship model to try and find first?

    • @carterfan80
      @carterfan80 11 месяцев назад +2

      You asked the right person! Ive owned numerous over the past 5 years.
      The MX series is their flagship. I like mx 74 (now the 75) or the MX 88 (probably best seller??)
      But t he RX Maybe something you want to try If you have The background to use it. Fast ski!
      DX 85 is an incredible value all mountainski. (especially used or leftover) rounder tail than mx, more fun for me. Still rips.
      Fx 2nd most popular. I owned it. Liked it. But doesn't fit into my east coast (mostly) quiver
      Have not tried the newer zx (powder ski) but heard really good things about it. I have a shop lined up in utah to try the zx in January.
      You can get an unbelievable deal on an mx or rx at powder 7 if you don't mind a demo binding. 1200$-1500$ ski for as low at 229$, often with less than 20 days usage on them! Worth every penny.
      I've never paid full price so I can't really say that they're worth double the money. But I can say I've liked every pair ive been on. (Loved a few) They use high quality woods. Their cores are milled with extreme precision.
      (Generally speaking, when I've skied. Something made in Austria, I've liked it)
      Someone told me....buying stockli or Kastles is like buying Bentley or a RR.....it's hard not to like them. And you may not want to go back. To me, I think stokli is more like a rolls royce cruiser and kastle is more like Bentley. Bentley is more a drivers car.
      Compare the shape and build of the storm rider 88 vs MX 88. Mx is built more like a carver..but beefier
      Fyi Love Maverick 95. One of the best All mountain skies have ever been on. (Maybe ever made???) And i've been on a lot! (Tried/owned 30 plus over last few years)

      A couple of other skis you should try. Each for different reasons.
      Fischer gt86
      Head i.Titan (or e??)
      Dynastar m free 99 or 108 (for drifty but stable fun)
      Armada declivity series is an underrated ski.
      Sleeper.... a small brand called Season. They make a ripping twin tip. ( Which is something I never thought I'd say. I do not ski twin tips and i've never spent a day in the park) Called the KIN . These Are so much fun and rip groomers on a fresh tune. You really can't find a bad review on them. I bought them and ended up loving them. Light and fast bases! Made in Austria at the atomic factory...I believe

    The one ski quiver is not a good idea IMHO.
    I very much agree with rickety's comments that out east, you need a wider crud cutter for pow and the spring and a carving ski for the balance.
    I've got enforcers for the every day and a pair of dynastar's for just piste carving... going to upgrade to some rossi race skis for that though.
    Just more fun carving on heavier skis.
    As to the stormrider weight, that shouldn't be a factor in your purchase unless you do not workout as part of your skiing process.
    I use enforcer 104 frees whenever I can and they weight much more than these storm riders and I NEVER get tired.
    But that's me. Not for everyone. If you aren't an athlete, these are not for you. Just don't. You won't be happy.
    If you aren't an athlete, you really want to get yourself some very light, very soft skis like Salomon QSTs.
    They will never challenge you or make you tired. They also aren't carving skis.
    Just easy turn stop, easy turn stop. Lots of float. No challenges for easy terrain. 😊

    • @johnklaus9111
      @johnklaus9111 5 месяцев назад

      I almost snapped em in half when I tried the QST putting normal carve pressure on the front. WOW....

    • @johnklaus9111
      @johnklaus9111 5 месяцев назад

      Let's also be clear I am not down on the QST. It's a specific ski for a specific purpose. If you struggle to turn the ski, the QST is for you.
      If you like just greens with powder on them, QST is for you.
      If you like bouncing in deep powder, the QST.
      If you like Carving and racing, don't buy the QST.
      If you hit something solid, they fold up like a cheap suit.

    I think you’re being a bit harsh here… almost sounds like a cranky review lol. First off these skis are not for a skier like you.. it’s for cruising really. And it’s for people who doesn’t bat an eye at the price. They are smooooth cruisers that carve well on piste but if you wanna go to the trees momentarily they do fine. You give it a 8.5 now … that’s not bamboozled. You’re rethinking them for the type of skiing you wanna do and that’s ok.

    This is a pretty negative review of the 88s IMO, and not exactly consistent with some of your other reviews and thoughts on it. (The new review of the SR95's where you talk very well of the 88s is one example). This ski is not heavy compared to most others and is easier/quicker edge to edge than the others in this category IMO.

    If they “feel” heavy at ehe end of the day, you not skiing correctly. 1st, the new SR95’s are lighter than that old pair. I actually still ski the 2014 version of the SR95, and I have 5 sets of ski’s. I can ski whatever I want, but my go to is still the old Stormrider95’s, no matter what the conditions. Only exception to that is, if we get a bomb of fresh snow, I prefer my powder sticks which in my case right now are an old set of Rossi Soul 7 HD’s, they are really light weight and let me throw them around in the trees and deep snow. But nothing beat the Stormrider 95’s, and they DEFINITELY are a great one quiver ski, especially the newer ones. The heavy weight of the old ones I actually like, because they just blow through everything, big piles of crud that normally give you a bit of a headache getting through, with the old heavy sr95’s you don’t even feel it. As for price, they are definitely PRICEY! I have only 2 complaints for Stockli, the PRICE, and the COLORS! They need to get some more bright colors on the topsheets so we can find them in deep snow, and so they just look nicer compared to all the other “cool” looking ski’s out there today like the Armada, Line and Black Crows. BUY SOME PAINT STOCKLI!!

    • @RicketySkiReviews

      I would say the heavy feeling is probably better described as less buoyancy. So the Stormrider 88's that I had (2018?) aren't all that heavy on paper, but compared to my Mavericks or Vantages don't float in the Idaho powder (especially on windy days) that being said I loved my Stormriders on groomers and would much prefer the Stormriders back East. But when it came to off trail in Idaho, they weren't overly buoyant and make for a lot of extra work off trail. But I believe what you're saying about the 95's and would love to test out some current gen Stormriders.
      Agree with everything else you're saying! They really need to updated those colors.
      Cheers.
