You can listen to more than a few of her songs. Amy does auto tune. As Amy says she doesn't change her hitting the notes. But how the notes sound. A perfect example of that is Lose Control. She gives her voice a eerie sound I guess you could say. That's using auto tuning the way it should be used. It should never be used to hit a note. If you can't hit the note then don't sing it. If you a writer change it to a note you can hit.
I am so surprised and impressed you picked up on the Celtic folk influences in just her vocals, holy shit. I remember her saying in an interview many years ago that in her home growing up her family would listen to and play a lot of Celtic folk music together. Amazing video! Fun facts about her influences: She's spoken about being obsessed with 90's grunge, particularly females. She was the choir president at high school and even arranged an original piece for their graduation called Listen To The Rain. She decided to learn the piano at age 11 after watching the film Armadeus and wanted to compose classical music, and later score films. She's also a fan of Danny Elfman and a megafan of Bjork so her references are all over the place. She's a real musician through and through! No wonder they were able to create something so unique and special
I never knew all this info about Amy Lee and I have been a huge fan of all things Evanescence since 10th grade high school in 2000. I have literally all their discography (yes, even the 'Hello'' home video) and for the life of me have tried to match her vocals in my male singing voice, but my register may just be too damn low. Thank you for sharing this gem of information, Amy Lee truly is someone unique and special in the rock & roll/ gothic rock world!
She inspired me to start singing when I was a teen but I think it got me stuck in chest voice for years and I forced-simulated her tone and it would blow me out with vocal fatigue. Now im trying to relearn singing from the ground up and learning a lot from Ken’s videos!
I’ve been working on an Amy Lee singing impression ever since my high school choir teacher and best friends pointed out that my singing sounded similar to hers. I had originally looked up to her as a talented and accomplished musician and singer and tried to apply some of her singing technique to my own singing. And learning from her technique made me a stronger singer. The real funny thing is that I’ve auditioned for an a capella group in high school, which was run by my choir teacher. I wasn’t even trying to imitate Amy Lee or had sung an Evanescence song for my audition, but my choir teacher pointed out to me that my voice sounded similar to hers. So here I am, a year later, still a big fan of Amy Lee and my best friends jokingly call me the “discount Amy Lee”.
the song was already good, and her vocals were already amazing, but the reworked version without the rap in it , which was much more orchestral, from the 2017 Synthesis album was really something else. Such a wonderful and powerful operatic voice on this girl
I've adored Amy Lee for all of the obvious reasons, but one not-so-obvious thing I LOVE about her skills is her use of breath. She is PHENOMENAL at making a simple inhale or exhale feel so significant.
This video actually really helped me improve my high note vocal register. I absolutely love Evanescence (since H.S. 2003) and have been trying to duet with her songs on my own forever. This is the only lesson series where I could finally learn how to match her vocals and sing along with her, in a sense. Thank you so much for your amazing and insightful lessons, Ken!
Amy Lee is one of my favorite female artists, cool to see you break it down, made me appreciate her talent more. You nailed the notes too man, clearly you know what you’re talkin about
This is so beautiful, and I totally hear the Celtic/Irish sound in her voice and arrangement...there's a great singer from Ireland named Mary Black... beautiful voice too and I think you'll probably enjoy her voice!
Ken: I have been watching your videos for what seems like forever, but what I like about you is that you always teach me new things. The section about the orchestral music being in minor then going into major key was eye-opening. I am a music soundtrack lover, and as soon as you mentioned that, it really hit home with me. Thanks for what you do and keep up the great work. 😎
I really appreciate you describing what's happening in the music. I'm not really a song writer, more of a vocalist with a pianist background but I'm trying to learn more about song writing so analysis of songs is super helpful!
>Goth I would absolutely love to hear Ken Tamplin covering the likes of Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy; my life and vocal journey would likely be complete at that point. I am absolutely in the range of most Goth rock/metal singers and Ken Tamplin covering literally anything Gothic would just be icing on the cake for me.
Can't sing worth a link, but find these deep dives fascinating! Really appreciate your historical references to grunge, 60s music, etc. I think Amy proves you can be successful in the rock genre while being a fairly clean female vocalist doing her own thing!
Oh look...it's Amy...gotta watch it. Then I'm blown away by the quality of the ANALYSIS beyond the quality of Amy's unreal voice! You're the real deal Ken. Excellent video once again.
Amy Lee's voice is untouchable, and she will forever be the queen of rock. But now that you've done a video on her (thank you for it!), you have to do Hayley Williams from Paramore! 🙂
First off love Amy Lee she is a fantastic singer love her tones great vocals love the song bring me to life I first heard the song from daredevil Ken the Ben Affleck daredevil movie love the song ever since such a great song she is definitely has a gothic vibe to her love her soft sounding vocals starting out on the song but the song rocks she has a breathy sound starting out always thought she was a beautiful woman with a awesome voice always enjoyed her Ken she rocks big time ken👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You are right about going from major back to minor. Using the major as a relief and a setup to make the minor hit twice as hard. That heavy part after the bridge where the male voice alternates with Amy gave me goosebumps all over. Powerful stuff! I always learn something new when I watch your videos. It's like having the greatest professor at the greatest music school in the world!
Except for the word "darling" in the bridge, I've always heard the lyrics as a prayer to God to "bring me back to life.....save me from the nothing I've become". That's how the song speaks to me anyway. Great analysis Ken. Love it.
As a general rule of thumb I don't tend to listen to many female artists, not meaning to be sexist, as I just like the timbre or a male rock voice. However; when I first heard Amy Lee I was blown away by how powerful her classical voice mixes with heavy grungy guitars.
@10:48 Fun fact; Amy Lee never wanted to duet with a male vocalist on 'Bring Me to Life' as she was forced to do so by the record company because they thought it would improve the band's image. As such, there is an alternative version with only Amy Lee on vocals. And yes, of course I have that version of this song as well.
OMG thank you for explaining that locked larynx part! I think that’s what made me feel stuck in a less flexible voice for a long time. I was raising my larynx too much too often and not as occasionally as she does
Ironically you mentioned a lot of her inspirations: Danny elfman or Nine Inch Nails. She always wanted to do scores and in between Evanescence S albums she did a couple of film scores and got awards even. I d recommend you to react to their recent stuff. The Bitter Truth is the current album they released this year and it’s the first they do as an indie band. It d be great to see the growth as a band. If you go for the intro you ll be mind blowed by the comeback they make. The songs are: “Artifact/the turn + broken pieces shine”. Great reaction!
There's different ways she kinda has done this. She has singed with Lindsey Stirling and a whole orchestra behind her. Look for their quarantine version of "Wasted On You" it's Lindsey ft Amy. Then their live cover Young and Beautiful from Lana del Rey they did in 2018 works that way too..... Evanescence Synthesis tour has a My Immortal string version, songs like Lacrymosa, Never go Back and End of The Dream are justa bout her vocals and tons of strings with her live. Go check it out. Also her acoustic performances with cello signing Lithium and Good Enough from 2007 are a must watch if you like strings and her vocals. And last but not least her solo work with Dave Eggar, "Find a way" is a song to react aswell
I'm shook that you mentioned Nightwish since I was going to mention that an isolated vocals video of one of their singers would be amazing! Great video as always!
She held the note for 10 seconds. Ken held it for 8 seconds. Still amazing. There is an 8-second note in the song "I'll" Be by Edwin McCain that I love singing.
Be still my beating heart you mentioned Nightwish, one of my favorite bands. I've been telling people for years how similar evenescence and nightwish are. Awesome video man!
Amy Lee's sound is so melancholic. Minor 7ths & 9ths are her signatures... I love working with them for the one reason: They make the resolution back to the home chord smoother. Yup, I can definitely hear the raised larynx on the word (lead) the Cmaj7 at the fist verse. Then again when she holds that long word life also Cmaj7 at the end... so awesome... I wondered what the song would sound in a little less darker tonality like the E Dorian Mode? In this case we would have a C# (half diminished) a raised sixth degree instead of a C natural... Not much we have to do since the song is in minor key already... Just an opinion!!!!
Thank you for introducing me to this singer. I love her style and this awesome song. She is so talented. I love Celtic music and that's exactly how you explained it. So cool.

i loved the whole album. her voice is what made it special.
For sure! Thanks for the visit.
Amy could sing a damn Betty Crocker recipe and it would sound amazing! Hands down the best vocalist in music!!!
Such a beautiful voice, no auto tune, just pure talent.

She has the best female voice, not technically. I love that she uses the near operatic tone but not sounds like Tarja. It's so haunting and beautiful
Beautiful!
