Amy is truly a master of her voice. She can portray a heartbroken child on the verge of tears; she can breathe life into a woman discovering real love; she can inject the venom of a wronged woman steeped in rage. She can convey lost, found, devastation, elation, confidence, fear, all with a practiced ease. She's one of the greatest voices ever to bless rock music.

@@BethRoars sorry Beth ,always enjoy your reactions, but after watching I still do not get why Amy - whom I have listened to for 20yrs gets to be categorized as "great" especially when you compare her to Floor Jansen - whom in most professionals opinion is beyond great.if Amy is "great" what does that make Floor ? who's vocals in every dimension are far superior ?

    • @BethRoars
      @BethRoars  3 года назад +16

@@nicod1361 I think they are both great. They have individual voices that speak to different people for different reasons and perhaps Amys doesn't speak to you. I personally don't think it's important to compare vocalists or musicians because although technique is important it is not the be all and end all of voice. If it was we would all love very efficient resonant robot voices. But part of Floor and Amys 'greatness' is their ability to communicate emotion and that is very subjective. I am doing a whole series and artists that are considered great by different people. I am sure many people also will disagree with some of the choices but it doesn't stop those artists being great to the people that connect with their music and might give the people who don't get it an insight into why that might be the case. So, no slight on Floor! She will probably end up with an episode of "what makes.... great"

Sometimes people are born with a gift(s). They can do through life no even knowing that something they can do others could only dream about. Amy was born with a gift. That voice. Even back in her late teens you could hear it was different. She did it so easily. Now matter whether Amy is saying low or high. She sounds like Amy Lee. Most singer lose their identity when they go very high or very low. No matter the note she always sounds like Amy. That's very rare indeed. From barely a whisper one second to belting out power that makes you go wow. She will show off her range. Never sticking her finger in your face showing off. But she'll show you, "see what I can do." Amy has what I call "it". You know it when you her is. But you really can't say what that "it" is. Talented song writer. Who can write music and lyrics. Can actually play the instrument she's known for. A voice that puts just about anyone to shame in her generation and even all time. She seems to be a very nice person (seems) And crazy hot. It's kind of unfair. Few can do everything in music. Amy can. That's what makes Amy Lee great. She's the whole package. Amy voice is just crazy good now. Total control of everything she can do. A touch deeper. But that just added a fuller sound to her voice. As a critic wrote. What Amy can do with her voice just isn't normal. That's a good way to put it I think.

I literally have grown up listening to evanescence since I was six, I'm 25 now and I always always go back to those albums when I'm really in a tough place or just allow myself to belt along to it for years while I need an outlet. It's made me learn alot about myself and the subject matter that she's never shy to sing. In alot of ways, it's helped me combat my own ptsd and heal alongside the songs of theirs

Fantastic video Beth! She has been my favorite female voice since I heard Bring Me to Life for the first time. I think every concept you explored was spot on. I think you overlooked one thing, but it isn't something you can technically teach or fully explain. When you hear her in person, or listen to her on a good pair of headphones, her voice resonates and rings in your head. It bounces around until it feels as though your heart is beating in time to her vocals. Amy Lee is one of the truly gifted artists that can make you feel how she wants you to, taking you on her journey with her songs.

Amy is truly an iconic artist. Not only did she change the image of women in rock with her own work, but through the many subsequent artists she inspired. So glad you brought this up at the end Beth. It was interesting to hear how her voice has evolved also.
Don't know if you've read her recent interview for Revolver by Courtney Laplante of Spiritbox, who was/is a big fan of Amy. You would probably really like Courtney too. She is as talented as Tati from Jinjer with a different clean singing style. She has a bunch of one take studio performances for their songs.

My understanding was that you were going to do a special "What Makes Floor Jansen So Great" episode she certainly deserve such an episode & time more than anyone I can think of,yet you choose 1 tiny song Shallow that is supposed to exemplify her degree of vocal ability ? seriously ? very disappointing

You know, for me it's not just about Amy's belting voice. I get tired of her being compared to other singers who can belt out a tune. Can they sing in a haunting way Amy does on ballards? Can they play classical piano? Can they play the harp? Are they the bands main songwriter? Amy has it all.
She's been through so much in her life. Losing her sister when she was a kid. Losing her brother in 2018. Having bottles thrown at her at metal festivals because fans didn't want hear a Woman singing. Being told by the record company to have a joint male vocalist on all the songs because the music buying public wouldn't accept a female metal singer on her own.
She walked away from a big record deal at the age of 19 because she wouldn't do it their way. She's been an independent artist since 2014. No record company telling her when to record and how they want her music to sound, but she doesn't have the fall back of their financial power. She does it her way.

I'm not a singer so I'm not knowledgeable at all about the technical stuff you were talking about, but I can say that what you're saying in the "social context" section is absolutely true. I was lucky enough to be able to go to an Evanescence show during their Synthesis tour, and before singing "My Immortal", Amy told the audience that over the years the meaning of that song had evolved to the point where it felt like she was singing it directly to us. "I've held your hand through all of these years, and you still have all of me." Her fans have an emotional connection to the music she writes, feeling like it has been with us through thick and thin, and helped us through so many hard times, and it was really wonderful to hear from Amy herself that she understands and values that role she has for so many people.

One of the reasons I like Amy Lee so much is that I can feel the emotion in the music, if an artist can move me like that i stop seeing their songs as something for background noise and start really paying attention to the music more (i.e. Iris: Goo Goo Dolls, Dancing on Broken Glass: Poets of the Fall, Remember When: Bad Wolves, Way to Fall: Starsailor).

Nice breakdown of her voice i agree with the ocean reference except id apply her emotional strength in singing to match the ocean on a calm day to an ocean on a stormy day going from straight rage of the seas at their worst to the calm tones of it at its softest and gentlest... Amy sings with pure emotions you can actually here it in her songs acting like a spell or sirens song pulling you into the depths of the tune another artist id equate her to is Freddie Mercury as combines strong and soft emotions into his songs and it reflects in his vocal tones

Amazing analysis. It's true. I'm a very emotional person and I feel my feelings are very well expressed in Amy's voice. 🤘🇦🇷✨

The range notes are wrong - she's sung lower than E3, such as in "Lithium", where she goes down to a Bb2, and even lower in "Your Star" to an F2. She's also sung higher than C6, sustaining a C#6 in Weight of the World, and in a warm up she hit E6. This is a great video but wish she did more homework on the discography.
Little correction for 0:48: she was 21 when it was released, but she was 19 when she wrote it and turned 20 when she recorded it

Great breakdown! I really like this format.
Would love it if you did this with someone like Sharon den Adel from Within Temtation for instance, who has similar qualities but no formal vocal training. Would be interesting to see the differences and similarities between the two!

Have you heard the original version of My Immortal (featured in the Evanescence EP outtakes?) The vocal evolution is very noticeable from the first rendition to Synthesis.

Thank you Beth for this beautiful video. I love to see this beautiful mix between wonderment, melancholy and nostalgia in yours eyes, I still feel the same for this band, even for Fallen which is still the album I would take if I had to go to Mars !
So emmotionnal, so pure, no cheats with what Amy sing.
During a moment I thank this music made me feel sad but I understand now after 20 years the message : I have to accept and live with my feelings, goods or bads and let them go out, whatever people think about it. And you do this so sweetly on this video. Thank you from a 11 years old introverted french when I first listenend Going under......

She is amazing, gorgeous. I LOVE HER, im argentinian and by the time she realesed her first álbum , only “dark” people listened it. Dark is a way to describe like a goth person..yes, we were called “dark” because we were sad kids with black clothes and that kind of stereotypes🙄 so i’ve always felt that people never gave her the recongnition she deserve. Anyway, her voice and music are just espectacular. She played in Buenos Aires once and i was underage and nobody Wanted to come with me 😔.

Beth, I’m looking forward to this! I once bought the Synthesis CD which had an added blu-ray which contained the whole concert, which is absolutely amazing (it’s full orchestra, which let’s Amy’s vocals really shine). I hope that you may have watched that concert blu-ray too, because that versions of End of the Dream is something to behold!

A lot of people (in some ways rightly) commenting on Amy's ability. I'd like to highlight how brilliantly, and as a scientist, scientifically you presented your assessment. Exceptionally well done! You had your industry knowledge backed opinions, presented them with quantified evidence. If I was a bodhisattva I would be giving you thousands of thumbs-up!

This video is nice. :) I’d love to see more rock and metal singers being analyzed. One could talk forever about Amy Lee, Sharon den Adel, Tarja Turunen, Cristina Scabbia, Simone Simons, Lzzy Hale, etc, everything that makes them great. Instead the only one who gets some sort of attention (in this genre) is Floor Jansen because of Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013, and while I agree that Floor is great, I want people to know that she’s NOT the only great singer out there. Besides that, all anyone seems to talk about (including RUclips’s so-called “vocal coaches” unfortunately) is Ariana, Gaga, Demi, some girl groups I’ve never heard of, the “vocal trinity” (aka Mariah, Celine, Whitney), and sooo much freaking KPOP which is simply generic industry-manufactured robotic music that has NOTHING to do with vocal talent. I’m sick of it. Someone please help make the extremely talented ladies of rock and metal go viral, lol.
