@@kentamplin Hi Ken, I know you have listened to Floor Jansen because I have seen your videos, and you know that she covered this same song, but you are aware that she did it again, from her home, she put it on YT two days ago I invite you to analyze it, that would be great, the sound is impressive !!! Greetings from Argentina, take care, I love what you do.
@markleeman9932 there are a few female singers that have lots of talent. Pat Benatar comes to mind. They both are top shelf, with Pat having a bit higher range. For me, it comes down to type of voice, and I prefer Ann's. I think she has a bit more lower range as well as the higher range. I like the quality of her voice. Pat is still a force as a singer.
Ann has something special. Her vocal ability knocks me out, but there's something wild and fierce that makes her mesmerizing. Sometimes we just have to admit there are certain qualities that are hard to put our fingers on. We can analyze her all day long and still not really understand what it is about her voice that moves us.
The 'out of control' scream is what's called for in the song. It's "stepping out" of control to convey the anguished soul of the woman in the song. It's perfect in my opinion. Had she nailed it "perfectly" from a vocal perspective, I wouldn't have believed her feelings.
I agree! I actually sing this song myself and in live performance 'the scream' everytime comes out differently, depending on what I am feeling emotionally at that point.
None of these great rock singers would win any of these modern day voice competition shows, that's what makes them great. No one will remember who won The Voice last year but we'll be discussing Ann Wilson for another 40 years.
I think Anne's world-famous riff in this song is exactly the way she wanted it -- borderline out of control which makes it the perfect expression of the singer's passion and frustration. In Celine Dion's cover of the song she does the riff much more controlled and correct and it doesn't have nearly the impact. It's fun hearing all different singers try their version of this riff but none has ever beaten Ann's cri de coeur. It wouldn't work nearly so well if it weren't pushed almost to the point of becoming an unmusical scream.
@@humanactivated1017 Indeed. There are a lot of great technical singers out there that tend to get too clinical. Which feels flat and boring. Emotion is key!
She is perfect throughout the whole song, especially where you say she is all over the place. You can’t teach that raw emotion. Those vocals are so powerful it gives me the chills.
I took my husband to see Heart in 2019. Of all the concerts I’ve been to, she was absolutely incredible and on top of her game just 2 years ago. She blew the top off the arena. I was speechless. We were in row 8, but we could have been in the nosebleed seats and would have been very pleased. If anyone has the chance to see her and her sister in the future, take it. They may be older rock stars, but they put most famous young singers to shame.
I saw them in 2019 too. Ann is still great, but she has lost a couple of notes at the high end. She kind of does more speak-singing of some of those meteoric notes from their 1970s catalog. I think it's time for them to adjust the keys downward a step or two in concert, but I've read that Ann is adamant about performing every Heart song in its original recorded key.
Ann Wilson’s voice has been with me since I was 10 years old. I’m 45 now and still in love with her voice and songs. Ann’s voice on those old Heart records just soothes my soul. There are many great voices out there but none like hers.Thank you for analyzing her voice and for sharing your knowledge.
I whole heartily agree with the comments regarding Ann Wilson’s prowess. I’ve been a fan of Heart since Dreamboat Annie but never had a chance to see them until a couple of years ago. I was blown away at the sheer power of her voice. But what blows me away about this video is Tamplins ability to navigate through the the entire range, both in pitch and dynamics, with ease. Bravo.
The Primal scream in the middle of the song in my opinion plays to the desperation in the lyric. I'll bet the imperfection of the run is something she considered and decided to leave in instead of redoing...

These human "imperfections" like the intro for the chorus are what makes a great singer. Many casting show competitors, all the Dimashs of the world may be impressive, technically nearly perfect singers. But personally, they don't move me at all. In my opinion, singing is very closely related with acting. You have to really perform in that moment, be genuine, vulnerable, or whatever the scene or song might ask you to be. Warts and all 😉
Ok Boomer. (Just kidding.) Yeah I am wondering why music sounds so stale now. It has gone through so much processing that even guys with perfect pitch like Charlie Puth uses autotune for effect. It kills those nice inflections. I dunno... Music sounds like intelligent noise now.
@@dodmusic9255 Yeah, that's the other side of it. Maybe I'm a boomer in taste, but I'm not a fan of heavy editing, too. The idea that singing is some kind of athletics where technique is there for its own sake is a little older than all the correction of vocals, I guess. I forgot to mention that training is very important, of course, especially in the long run. And depending on the song, you should be able to sing with a good pitch, vibrato, "stomach support" and so on. But all these are only the necessary means to perform. Totally agree, thats why i have no interest at all at Dimash or many others but only Morissette and Floor Jansen really get me, since beside their technique they also are really great storytellers and bring in all the feelings and stuff that makes me really believe what they sing. Its the same with instruments in power metal for example, where full speed shredding with no speed maybe fascinating for first listen, but in the end there mostly is not much emotion and the slower songs is always what make me like a band or not. I mean some play 100 notes in a few seconds on the guitar and David Gilmour only plays 3-4 notes in the same time but with his bending he in the end is the one i remember and also identify everytime he plays.

I so appreciate these "isolated vocals" videos because they make me feel so much better about my lousy vocal skills. :) I think anyone can manufacture a tune from bits and pieces, patch it on Reaper and sound decent. There are some pathetic YT con artists who do just that claiming "all vocals are theirs" and they refuse to demonstrate their real vocals live on camera. I still think Ann has ( had ! ) a beautiful and unique voice but the truth is that the real magic comes from sound engineering. Thank you for this video, Mr Tamplin! ✌️😎🤘
I have absolutely no reason for watching these vids (about my 5th) as I do online marketing. But, I just find them soooo interesting! And Ken's passion really comes through.
Ann did the f#5 perfectly cuz she has a top notch technique but she is also a great artist and knew how to sing the note to match how much she wants to be alone w her lover. Shes a genius. If she didn’t sing it with that grit it would lose its authenticity
Hey Ken! I saw Heart in Chicago back in '78 or '79. They were one of the hottest bands at the time. Incredible show! Ann's vocals blew me away back then and still does today. Their encore that night was Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin. Not too many woman can cover Robert Plant's vocals, but Ann Wilson did and was amazing in doing so. The only other woman that can do Robert justice is Alyona! Gotta love it!!
I’d never really listened to Ann Wilson or Heart before I came across your videos. Now I’m a massive fan. She’s an amazing singer. It’s also really interesting to hear the difference in how the vocals sound in and isolated from the mix.
Ann Wilson possesses one of the best vibratos of any singer, IMO. I LOVE fast vibratos. Singer Jody Miller also has a fast vibrato that I've always loved.
13:40, the fact that it’s just on the knife’s edge of control is precisely what makes it so great. You feel it on a soul level, all the angst and longing. It’s an ache, a wound. It cuts you like a knife and you too are left a little wounded.
Ken I hear what you're saying.... but this song is perfect. I have sang this song drunk so many times with my friends & family lol and nobody ever complains about Ann's vocals. We all want to sound exactly like her and none of us can do it !!
Master, Ken. I agree with you in the technical aspect that she could have sounded better had she not sung so nasally, but that is one of the aspects that made her different from other female singers. She had her own unique way of singing. Her own sound. She 's my favorite female singer.
I'm not a vocalist, i have great appreciation for the craft. I have to say , Ken, A lot your advice and insight I find useful and transferrable to guitar. Absolute goldmine of a channel you have here.
Ken, these isolated tracks are so inspiring. They strip away the fog and get to the core of it. The difference between a good singer and a great one is subtle to the uninitiated, but that extra %.01 is a thousand miles wide Thanks for continuing to provide value.
Ken, you never cease to amaze me with your vocal range!! I do disagree with a couple of your points: One I think you just got backwards on the end "Alone" voice double-the first pair of vibratos are lined up better than the second pair; the other is how perfectly an screams Alone, I don't see how that could be done any better, I disagree with you that she is "all over the place" on that scream. I agree with almost all your other points, and I didn't know they put so much reverb on her for that song until listening to the LV in isolation like this. It wold be great to hear the actual LV track prior to adding reverb. Thanks Ken...I have and love your courses.
Wow once again Ken i learned a bunch from this.. Ann and Nancy are the absolute best..I smile at the fact i was correct on her vibrato, that there are two distinct upper and lower. Rock on my friends.
Man we have really been blessed with so many incredible female singers. Also can we get Ken to react to old Ken Tamplin songs? That would be so awesome
LOVE LOVE LOVE her squeak on "Chills me to the bone" You just can't easily recreate those amazing raw feelings!!! My hair instantly stands up everytime :)
Anne Wilson is one of the best female rock vocalists of all time love her voice loved heart they had a a lot of great songs I enjoyed Anne Wilson is my mom's favorite female rock singer alone and what about love are two of my favorites she does yes you can hear apt of reverb in her voice but yes she is awesome Ken
In 1987 I worked in a radio broadcasting edit bay. My boss used to get pre released cd singles. This was the beginning of the digital era. If you can imagine popping in the Alone cd and hearing it before it was on the radio, you can understand how excited I was. I knew the brilliant and clean Toto like sound was guaranteed to be a major hit. I hope people understand what it took to produce this work if art, but I’m also impressed at how easily you casually mimicked her intonations. Well done by both of you.
I strongly feel that the ‘shrillness’ and ‘instability’ Ken refers to, was intentional, to reflect the personal state of the subject. Otherwise it might have sounded too flat or polished, too ‘musical’ for lack of a better reference
Now I'll never hear the song the same after this dissection... Nothing negative about it, it is the amount of detail you showed, wow it really shows that there so much into any profession, is not just having a nice voice. Ann is such a goddess.
What a singer. Loved a lot of hearts records. Even the commercial ones with the big hair. Ann and Nancy both created stunning harmonies. Great job Ken but that goes without saying. I love how Ann works the ‘out of control bit’. It’s very emotional. Almost like a scream of pain.
At 62 and always loving beautiful VOCALS I wish I was young enough to try. What you teach is pure magic making most other "reactions" an absolute joke.
On 'These Dreams', where Nancy sings lead, you can hear a 'raspiness' in the first chorus, and clarity in the second, especially on the line 'Every second of the night'. I think that the first chorus was recorded later in the session.
I believe I read an interview with Nancy back in the day and she said she had a cold or was coming down with one and they liked the raspiness of her voice and kept it.
Ann Wilson is special from 70s and this is 2021.Now 70 and the vocal is Mingblowing and as strong as ever, and totally in control where she gets the passion and emotion from. This is my thinking she thrives for perfection, this makes her thee rocker of all time.Hall of Fame a genius in her own right to only Ann level. Superhuman of one kind💕💕 Ann Wilson Thee all time Rocker of This World 💕 Whitney Houston was thee mind blowing singing angel of the world 💕 I would call this a super league 2 best that graced this planet 🎶🎶🎶
The sad thing is we didn’t get to see how Whitney would age. She clearly didn’t take care of yourself, and her last recording showed that. It was beautiful, but it wasn’t what she was or what she could have been.
This was SO fascinating! Thank you. Another thing I had never noticed was that she sings, "I never really cared until I met-too" and not "met you" (or at least, that's what it sounds like to me). That was a line that I could never quite make out until I saw the lyrics decades later. Thank you for these super interesting analyses!
Singers back in the 70's and 80's and even in the 90's used reverb to get fullness and depth , especially on slower more melodic songs with long phrasing. In one sense , this was a way of covering up a singers weaknesses or exaggerating a singers voice strengths. While Ann without Reverb is still amazing , the reverb does nothing but make an already amazing singer , more amazing. In retrospect , with the introduction of Autotune , it destroyed the industry , Autotune does not do anything but correct a singers voice to the right pitch and note which in essence , replaces the singer. This is why iconic singers today do not have the same holding strength on the industry like the ones 30 years ago or further. They essentially do not have to work as hard to have a great voice , the great voice is provided for them now. Its more about showmanship , than the ability to sing.
This guy is awesome, love his energy. Makes me realize how important it can be to have a good teacher. I'm just a closet singer who loves to belt out anything Ann Wilson sings. Love her so much, her voice is miraculous.
Without a doubt, Ann Wilson is one of the best vocalists in rock. It was interesting to listen to this after recently watching the Wilson sisters interview with Dan Rather from 2016. This era (80s) of their music was so much different than 70s era Heart. In the 80s, they were performing songs written by others rather than their own material. Like the pro she is, Ann was still able to capture the emotion in this song. I actually think the imperfections help with that. Thanks for the great analysis.
This is so timely! Last night I took on "Barracuda" because now thanks to your course I can actually sing high. My first take on it needs lots of work. So thanks for this tutorial!
Best Female Rock Singer hands down. No woman has the vocals of this lady, and she does it effortlessly. The singers of today try too hard, and most don't sound that good, it's too much about looking good on stage, not talent.
Thank you for offering specific and detailed analysis rather than vague, meaningless generalities. I feel smarter for having watched this. One suggestion: if your audience is to include the musically unsophisticated then please consider color coding your analysis and juxtaposing it to the singer's performance. Newbies might not understand musical vocabulary or, if they do, might not have a sensitive or sophisticated enough ear to hear your analysis in the performance. Seeing the word "vibrato," for example, at the exact second it is happening in the performance would drive your insights home.
I've been a big Ann Wilson fan since the first Heart albums but I don't agree she was recorded with less Reverb in the seventies. On songs like Barracuda they used an effect which puts Reverb after the note and also some BEFORE it. I used to use that effect myself but I forget what it's called. It gave Wilson's voice a singularly thrilling impact. Great video and your ability to hit female notes and mimic different vocal effects is prodigious! Thank you for giving us these terrific video.
As you know... Reverb and other effects are usually added to a bus, so you probably have got some "karaoke" vocals of some sort (but better, as it is you), not the actual vocal track of Ann's recording. But great stuff as always!
Ann Wilson, in my opinion, the best female vocal ever.
Ann is unsurpassed!

As a vocalist, you get to know the mic the room and the compressor like they were a part of your body.
I have absolutely no reason for watching these vids (about my 5th) as I do online marketing. But, I just find them soooo interesting! And Ken's passion really comes through.
Glad you like them!
That scream was and is perfect. Thats true raw emotion.
She's not one of the best. She's the best. Thanks for covering her.
onehit pick 👍
Ann did the f#5 perfectly cuz she has a top notch technique but she is also a great artist and knew how to sing the note to match how much she wants to be alone w her lover. Shes a genius. If she didn’t sing it with that grit it would lose its authenticity
Thanks for weighing in, Alex L.A.!
Great band! Love their tributes to Zeppelin and The Who.
Seconded on Alyona. I listen to Alyona's version almost on a daily basis.
@@kentamplin Absolutely. They are awesome!😎
@@MihiraTheAce Alyona had two cover bands in Russia. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. The bands were really good.
...Maybe Amy Lee?..yes, I am an Amy Lee fan.. :)
I’d never really listened to Ann Wilson or Heart before I came across your videos. Now I’m a massive fan. She’s an amazing singer. It’s also really interesting to hear the difference in how the vocals sound in and isolated from the mix.
Happy to hear that!
That high borderline loss of control is what slays me on this song. Gimme some more of that!
😀
Ann Wilson is the best female singer of all time ❤️✌🏻
She's great!
Ann Wilson possesses one of the best vibratos of any singer, IMO. I LOVE fast vibratos. Singer Jody Miller also has a fast vibrato that I've always loved.
jod6cindy 👍
Her voice is perfect.
13:40, the fact that it’s just on the knife’s edge of control is precisely what makes it so great.
You feel it on a soul level, all the angst and longing. It’s an ache, a wound.
It cuts you like a knife and you too are left a little wounded.
Well said. Thanks for the visit!
Thank God for her imperfections. It's what makes her - her. It's rock and roll not opera. Those imperfections sound awesome in the mix. Good analysis.
Rock on! 😊
When she hits those high notes, it almost brings a tear to my eye. She can really belt it out.
She sure can!
..the only other women vocalists that can "belt it out" like that I can think of are Pat Benatar and Amy Lee...
Ken I hear what you're saying.... but this song is perfect. I have sang this song drunk so many times with my friends & family lol and nobody ever complains about Ann's vocals. We all want to sound exactly like her and none of us can do it !!
I ALWAYS get chills (good chills) when I hear Ann belt out THAT run. The amazing thing is that she can recreate it live.
Couldn't agree more!
Awesome! Happy to hear that!
Her talent is awe inspiring, no profanity, or vulgarity. True God given talent, doesn't need to do that.
Ken, these isolated tracks are so inspiring.
They strip away the fog and get to the core of it.
The difference between a good singer and a great one is subtle to the uninitiated, but that extra %.01 is a thousand miles wide
Thanks for continuing to provide value.
Rob Sch 👍
Ann is amazing no matter how you dissect it.
👍😀
Thanks for weighing in, Paul!
Haha Maybe one of these days, Never Enough Cowbell!
She is!
Definitely Ken she rocks
In 1987 I worked in a radio broadcasting edit bay. My boss used to get pre released cd singles. This was the beginning of the digital era. If you can imagine popping in the Alone cd and hearing it before it was on the radio, you can understand how excited I was.
I knew the brilliant and clean Toto like sound was guaranteed to be a major hit.
I hope people understand what it took to produce this work if art, but I’m also impressed at how easily you casually mimicked her intonations.
Well done by both of you.
Thanks so much Papparratzi!
I strongly feel that the ‘shrillness’ and ‘instability’ Ken refers to, was intentional, to reflect the personal state of the subject. Otherwise it might have sounded too flat or polished, too ‘musical’ for lack of a better reference
Thanks for the visit. Rock on! 👍
Now I'll never hear the song the same after this dissection... Nothing negative about it, it is the amount of detail you showed, wow it really shows that there so much into any profession, is not just having a nice voice. Ann is such a goddess.
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Thanks for weighing in, theonlyredspecial!
Yes, that 'out of control,' emotional outburst makes the song. There is the artist here, vocally expressing the pain of unrequited love.
At 62 and always loving beautiful VOCALS I wish I was young enough to try. What you teach is pure magic making most other "reactions" an absolute joke.
You're never too old, Bruce The Curmudgeon!
On 'These Dreams', where Nancy sings lead, you can hear a 'raspiness' in the first chorus, and clarity in the second, especially on the line 'Every second of the night'. I think that the first chorus was recorded later in the session.
👍💜😀
I believe I read an interview with Nancy back in the day and she said she had a cold or was coming down with one and they liked the raspiness of her voice and kept it.
she's a rock singer...it's about rawness, power n passion...🤘 😎
Great breakdown Ken. I'll never hear that song the same way again, as I now have a greater appreciation for what's going on vocally
Glad you enjoyed it!
Superhuman of one kind💕💕
Ann Wilson Thee all time Rocker of This World 💕
Whitney Houston was thee mind blowing singing angel of the world 💕
I would call this a super league 2 best that graced this planet 🎶🎶🎶
The sad thing is we didn’t get to see how Whitney would age. She clearly didn’t take care of yourself, and her last recording showed that. It was beautiful, but it wasn’t what she was or what she could have been.
This was SO fascinating! Thank you. Another thing I had never noticed was that she sings, "I never really cared until I met-too" and not "met you" (or at least, that's what it sounds like to me). That was a line that I could never quite make out until I saw the lyrics decades later. Thank you for these super interesting analyses!
Thanks for listening, elarasophia!
My favorite singer! At 72 she is still going!
😊
Amen! We had to work hard to get a good sound. My vocal coach used to have a saying, "The tape don't lie." Seems it does lie now.
Damn, I love this song like never ever able to forget it !
Oh teacher what a nice example. Love how her voice expands ! Also, it is like she fulfills her feelings pretty well . Thank you very much .
Glad you liked it!
This is one of my favourite songs of all time. Whenever this comes on, I just have to belt along. There is SO much emotion here.
It's beautiful!
I love doing this too. The beauty is in, and we are moved by, the imperfection.
VIDEOHEREBOB 👍
Ann forever. When she hits it, I cry. Love that you compare her to Axl and Celine (my other favorites)
OMG! She is HUMAN! Damn this was a Great breakdown. I never realize that reverb can give body to a voice.
Glad it was helpful, D Hasty!
This guy is awesome, love his energy. Makes me realize how important it can be to have a good teacher. I'm just a closet singer who loves to belt out anything Ann Wilson sings. Love her so much, her voice is miraculous.
😊👍
Ken Tamplin is the only vocal coach i trust!
Thank you, m m!
There's magic in the mixing because the finished song really works!
😀👍
Always felt this is one of the greatest vocal performances I've heard.
😀👍
Without a doubt, Ann Wilson is one of the best vocalists in rock. It was interesting to listen to this after recently watching the Wilson sisters interview with Dan Rather from 2016. This era (80s) of their music was so much different than 70s era Heart. In the 80s, they were performing songs written by others rather than their own material. Like the pro she is, Ann was still able to capture the emotion in this song. I actually think the imperfections help with that. Thanks for the great analysis.
Thanks for the visit!
This is so timely! Last night I took on "Barracuda" because now thanks to your course I can actually sing high. My first take on it needs lots of work. So thanks for this tutorial!
Awesome, Judie!!!
Best Female Rock Singer hands down. No woman has the vocals of this lady, and she does it effortlessly. The singers of today try too hard, and most don't sound that good, it's too much about looking good on stage, not talent.
Thanks for the visit!
I love the wail. So genuine, so human.
💜
Thank you!
As you know... Reverb and other effects are usually added to a bus, so you probably have got some "karaoke" vocals of some sort (but better, as it is you), not the actual vocal track of Ann's recording. But great stuff as always!
