“Close to you-wow-wow-wow-wow” 😂😂 You cracked me up in this one, Fil. He’s a cheat, like most of them out there. Thanks for calling it out lucidly and explicitly. Puth’s performance sounds absolutely horrible, but the man can sing. Why does he do it? Is he that insecure? Am I supposed to feel sorry for him for being so insecure that he has to cheat? I don’t. It’s another example of everybody pretending to be perfect. We’re not perfect. This is yuck yuck yuck.
Your last clip provided a twist in this vocal analysis. From upfront artist of the "modern" sound genre to a participant in a fake improv performance with pre recorded bkgd vocals. Thorough analysis!
Why do they get mad at you?! It's not your fault. Sheesh! People are ridiculous. I've never heard of this singer or this song. So I had no emotional attachment one way or the other. I can't explain or even fully understand the tech stuff like you do. But I can hear when something sounds bad. This sounds BAD. At least he's honest about using auto tune. The fact that auto tune can be used live has made it so I have no desire to ever pay for a concert again. This, coming from someone who has adored music since childhood. It really does break my heart. It's like something precious has been stolen from me.
same yesterday had beatles white in car while my guitar gently weeps read somewhere was basically live in studio when clapton came pressed for time and 40 something plus years ago atill sounds great just them guitars george vocal paul bass ringo drums pretty basic no special effects beatles did back then
yeh was telling other viewer all the press about beatles red blue remixed in store big dollars double vinly cds but the 93 parlophone cds i have remastered by gearge martin sounded ok in the car but guess you would have to hear on high end system.mixed reviews songs great orhers lousy waste of money so hard to say
same 1988 mcmansion moving sold me the past masters set cds only missing revolver got half price only listened to sgt pepper in car same george martin remastered sounded ok to me compared to giles remix dont know
Honestly? ALL singer/songwriters that brought so much joy in our lives with their voices BEFORE autotune or pitch correction appeared. Really, that‘s a shame. Is it a matter of singing or simply making money??? 🧲💰💰💰💰💰
You did a great job Fil pointing out the use of auto tune in this performance. It all sounds tinny to me. I would much rather listen to Karen Carpenter's version. Great analysis as always 😊🎸🎵
Let me give some advice to Charlie. Never, ever try covering a Karen Carpenter classic. That was NOT good. I really thought that Fil was going to burst out laughing while listening! 😂
I really like your videos! I actually wish that artists would tell you upfront whether they've used pitch correction on not on their studio recordings. And ESPECIALLY whether they use it live or not. Because there's no way I'll pay for a "live" concert if it's autotuned live.
Is it me, or did I detect Fil being honestly critical in the video? Ive never heard him sound even remotely like he had to do that with other natural talents who dont use pitch correction. Always great things to say about those artists. You're on roll Fil, keep it up! Tell it like it is!
I don’t think critical but honest. He didn’t bag Charlie’s ability but did question the need for such an artificial sound when singing “live.” It takes all of the genuine tone, humanity & yes, even small quirks & flaws out of the equation. The result is robotic & not something you can easily connect to emotionally. I absolutely DESPISE autotune, especially “live” (it’s not live, it’s a ruse).
One night when I was a young bass player, a couple of friends of mine unexpectedly found themselves short a bass player for a gig at a local bar. I didn't have time to listen the songs they were doing, let alone rehearse. But it was an important night for them, so I decided to try and help them out. I thought I did pretty good, especially since the set list included originals and obscure cover songs. I was able to lock down the songs that were mostly diatonic, I-IV, whatever, but I definitely butchered a few. I remember struggling with some obscure early Pink Floyd song where the bass line was almost entirely non-chordal tones. A few years ago, I ran into someone I used to know, who told me the last time he remembered seeing me was that night. Then he went on to tell me how much I sucked. Everyone who has never seriously tried to learn music just assumes it's easy. But it has to be even tougher for young musicians nowadays, thanks to people like Charlie Puth and his angry fans.
Can you do this analysis with a live performance of Ben Folds? He's known for riffing and making up songs on the fly. Difference is that he is the band; the man on the piano. I love Ben.
Thanks for the clarifications as to pitch, Fil - great job 👏🏻👍🏻. I’ve heard him do the “impromptu” song before and, although I think he probably could put a song together fairly quickly, “impromptu” is about as “impromptu” as reality show/chat show dialogue
Perfect pitch is entirely a listening skill. Some individuals with perfect pitch can’t sing at all. Also, perfect pitch says nothing about fine tuning. Individuals possessing it round pitch to the nearest note, they can’t necessarily hear if something is 5 or 10 cents off. To be clear, some can however they are different listening skills. One is note recognition and the other is fine pitch discrimination.
Makes me rethink Charlie's talent. Kinda liked him, now this changes my perspective. I want real singers. Mistakes and all. Hope Charlie doesnt continue down this road. BTW, I'm an old timer in my 60s so maybe to him, I wouldnt be worth concerning himself with. Lol.
Great explanation between pitch correction and pitch perfect. At least Charlie is honest, but his cover of Close to You is really bad. Karen Carpenters singing is sublime. Thanks, Fil
Clipped and robotic sounding. Karen Carpenter sounds so beautiful that it brings a tear to your eye, Charlie brings a tear of frustration to your eye ! True singing seems to be dying, it's a true art that's being ruined for the current generation.
Excellence has been replaced by good enough, it's a crying shame. You can hear every word Karen was singing in her performances. It was crystal clear and full of emotion which was integral to the Carpenter's artistry.
Facts are friendly. At least he does, when asked, say he uses autotune. Hopefully, he will also label his videos ...and explain autotune at live shows. I know, that's asking too much! Great analysis with clear examples of what autotune sounds (and looks) like.
People used to fiddle with voices years ago -- multiple tracks and so on -- but this auto-tune is something else. I like Puth's song "Lipstick" but I can tell his voice had been altered the first time I heard it. On "Close to You" it sounds so utterly unnatural that it's positively comical. Howard Stern has no musical taste. Really great singers don't need auto-tune!
I said the first time I heard Charlie Puth that it was auto tuned, along with the like of Miley Cyrus, if you mention that on their own videos the fans are so aggressive, I don't mind some use of voice effects on modern music, but not when it's not been owned up to.
This singer may have admitted he uses autotune live in an interview but, I'm sure he doesn't go around telling everyone who will listen that that is what he is doing and that people may never ever have heard his natural voice. How in the world do you fight back against the fact that "everybody uses it nowadays"!? Well, one way to fight back is for actual artists who put out for public consumption their own natural voice, replete with artistic impression and emotional storytelling, to let everyone and their brother know that they DO NOT use pitch correction or autotuning, either live or on their recordings and would fire any producer who would ask them to use it and make THAT fact known in no uncertain terms on any songs they release. By the way, Fil, wishing you the best of luck with your petition - hoping it will get as many people signing it as are subscribed to your fascinating RUclips channel. I'm listening to this while writing this comment and I'm ready for a stiff drink...make mine a double, in fact. And, it's not even noon time here yet. Yikes.
You'll notice in the "live" clip that Charlie has the frame and stand of a Fender Rhodes, which doesn't have any of the controls on it like volume and speed of the panning etc. but the actual keyboard is not a Fender Rhodes. In fairness to Charlie, he apparently does have "perfect pitch" but chooses to use AutoTune both live and on his studio recordings because he "likes the sound of it".
ref the "sprinkled moondust" part... that's just him trying to sing the least amount of consonants he can get away with. It actually does help with singing cuz w/o those pesky consonants that interrupt the vowels... well, we'd just have ooooooooooo ahhhhh oooooooew. So, he's doing a singing technique which reduces the interruptions and thus helps him maintain that note (at the expense of clarity of enunciation).
The concert footage wasn't pre planned or rehearsed, it was 'retrospectively spontaneous' or whatever phrase some wannabe legal hotshot can come up with.
Time 10:40 to 11:40 (and more) showed the worst part of Auto-Tune for me: whenever you sing a new syllable and especially a new consonant with the same note as the previous, there will always be changes in the pitch. You can't get around it, unless you use Auto-Tune, in which case it will therefore sound unnatural.
Fil, you are providing a fantastic service to the music world with these analysis. I stopped listening to any new music in the 80’s because I hate a synthesizer and anything that sounds like one. I never knew how prolific Autotune and Pitch Correction were used, but, your videos have explained everything in detail. Brilliant Work!!! ❤️
Charlie Puth does have perfect pitch, as does Julie Andrews. My boyfriend was a choral teacher of his for a few years and can attest to that fact. He did have a problem distinguishing between octaves, but each note was exactly in tune.
Thank you Fil! This is a master class that perfectly illustrates what you have been trying to explain for quite a bit of time now. I like Charlie Puth, but this was an AWFUL choice for him to do live and your video clearly demonstrates why!
I've been watching Jason Laughlin since he is a good guitar teacher for beginners. It's like he puts training wheels on the fretboard. I just watched a Truefire video and he talked about his gear. He says he uses guitars and amps, and doesn't use pedals. He said that when he hears a guitarist playing with X or Y pedal, they start sounding like X or Y pedal, and they sound like the other guitarists that use X or Y. This fits in nicely with your rant about Autotune.
I'm both a performer and a former sound engineer & can instantly tell when a sung note has been AT'd (autotuned) or PC'd (pitch-corrected -- AT & PC are not the same thing; and no, PC is not an effect or "filter" either). However, even without mixing or publishing experience, I would venture to guess that *most* singers can easily tell when AT or PC has been applied or used in a session. Conversely, I would dare to say, that those who aren't trained singers, might not be able perceive the difference between real/natural and/or processed voices. Puth never sounded natural to me, except for a couple early, pre-fame recordings. He is a phenomenal singer, and does not need to rely on AT/PC. However, that's his choice -- and it may allow him to "shift" his concentration powers to playing his instrument with nuance -- which, IMO is also pretty dang good too. Tech tip for those learning this stuff -- AT will *always* have tell-tale sound artifacts, such as misplaced clicks/ticks (think static) and a certain "tin-iness" (think saturated treble with minimal midrange). Both are caused by the slight repositioning of the sound segments, which in turn causes a phasing effect (like a mildly synthesized robotic voice). No amount of filtering can get rid of those artifacts. Last thing -- those with "perfect pitch" have the ability to blend their sung notes nearly perfectly to whatever is being played or sung, regardless of tuning. Example, a Barbershop Quartet sings in relative tuning (2/3, 3/4, 1/2, i.e., Pythagorean Tuning) simply because our brains instantly calculates those intervals. However, the same quartet may not be able to nicely sing songs containing instruments in modern tuning. Our brains don't do 12-cent ET tuning (modern tuning), but instead approximates the notes that we attempt to sing -- quite well, I may add. Stated in another way, it is way easier for us to sing (a capella) harmony parts relative to another person, than it is to sing "perfectly" to modern tuning intervals. Those who can are the ones who stand out from the rest.
I'm sure it's obvious to you considering your prior career! I've been finding that it's a spectrum of sorts as far as those who can detect it easily all the way to those who can't at all. It happens that I have sensitive ears to it, but a couple people I asked didn't hear it (that was with Fil's Celine Dion video). Fil, has explained the difference between Autotune and pitch-correction before so many of his followers now understand it.
Great analysis, as always, Fil! That "off-the-cuff" song made my toes curl. It's a strange way to accidentally undermine your entire genre of music when you can churn out a new song without putting any thought into it - even if it were true, it suggests a very formulaic and mindless approach to music making (the band knows which chords to go to because every song has the same structure etc). Thanks for drawing attention to these deceptions. Symptoms of the deeper issues we face as a world right now!
The entirety of current pop and hip hop vocals is autotuned. Sadly, the autotuned “ sound” is in fashion and seen as “ great vocals”. Listeners think the singers are really making that autotuned sound. I’ve noticed judges in The Voice will not turn around for great vocalists who don’t have the pitch corrected sound they like. They then critique the singer for being “ pitchy”. It’s so frustrating. Wonder if you’d consider looking into that.
Gosh it sounds like a computer voice. If this is the REAL Howard Stern defending Charlie I knew he was an idiot but the fake who listens and plagiarizes is worse fake than Charlie's voice.
Love your channel man. The issue with music today is this type of “perfection” whether it be vocals, guitars or drums is the expectation. Andy Edward does a great job of explaining some of this on his YT channel.
Thank you Fil. Having grown up going to concerts/live performances pre-autotune, if I went to a concert now and experienced this much autotune, I’d leave and demand my money back. I want to listen to a human, not a computer.
@Wings of Pegasus hi Fil, I loved Karen Carpenter’s voice and I agreed strongly with you about her abilities. This guy, to me he seems to be singing too high almost straining to hit the note and yes, his annunciation of the words like hair are either bad because he is a lazy singer or lost by computer manipulation. Give me Karen Carpenter any day… take care💕
I'll bet you my grandmother's third teeth that we'll soon see a countermovement. Perhaps one day new musical creativity and authenticity will flourish in this artistic desert. Thanks for everything, Fil!
Sign Fil’s petition. We _are_ the counter movement. In the meantime, I would say that Disturbed, Mammoth WVH, and Halestorm are *not* using auto tune or Melodyne. Neither is Jerry Cantrell and Alice In Chains. Bush sounds authentic, too (I’ll know more this summer, after the concert). I can hear it really easily.
Exactly. DO AWAY WITH AUTO-TUNE. You can either sing it NATURALLY - or you can’t. NO voice aided technology before the late 90’s- or whenever this processed fake stuff came out.
@@pibly7784 , At the very least, it should be labeled as auto tuned or pitch corrected. Apparently, some people either don’t notice it or don’t care if it’s used. I do, though, and think it should be disclosed when used.
@@SuziQ. I don’t think the industry can force people to disclose this… BUT, those who DON’T use pitch correction SHOULD indicate so. This would be much like how people label food as organic. And frankly, “consuming” non-organic voices bothers me far more than consuming non-organic food lol!
I think there is a huge number of people who don't hear it - I scrolled by a short not long ago of a guy singing and it was very obviously altered and no one questioned it was just his natural voice. Me: he sounds like a robot, that ain't real. As a listener, I want imperfections over robots. But then, I'm old so maybe this is a generational thing. Also, that "close to you" was absolute BUTCHERY to my ears and I'm someone who is not a Carpenters fan at all.
I think you're right that there are a large number of folks who don't hear it. Some younger people won't know or notice because it's most of what they've heard. I do know someone who's in their mid-40s I showed the Celine Dion one that Fil covered too and he said he didn't hear anything wrong with it at all, and he knows Celine's unaltered voice. So many are only exposed to altered and many have ears that are not the least bit sensitive to it. Sadly, or luckily, not sure which right now, mine are extremely sensitive to it. Years ago before I paid any attention to is, I kept being shown songs or coming across songs I just did. not. like. I didn't know why, nor even listen to them long enough to figure it out. Turns out that for the very large majority of all those songs and artists it was because they were autotuned or pitch corrected. It was really interesting discovering the reason I don't like certain singers or songs.
Sprinkled moon dust in your derriere. Whatever melts your butter as my dad used to say. Howard Stern is an idiot, then he said I could watch you all day 🤢🤣. That's the problem, people today look at music, they don't listen
If the likes of Agnetha Fältskog and Karen Carpenter can't hit the lines all the time, then it's safe to assume no one else can either. This one was so obvious that it's hard to imagine someone thinking he was singing without autotune or pitch correctio 😂
@@SuziQ.Do we all see what happened there? That's autism right there. They react to anything as if it was said to them.
@@papalaz4444244 , At the 15 minute mark, only Fil is onscreen. He almost laughs shortly afterwards. Perhaps, being on the spectrum, as you claim, you could be more specific about the exact time stamp with people other than Fil and his subscribers listening. I see only Fil at the 15:00 minute mark. I did laugh out loud at the obvious use of auto tune, which is why I replied that I laughed (and noticed that Fil nearly laughed). I’m not on the spectrum. I failed to notice the lack of an audience (apart from Fil) because I was listening to the video whilst reading the comments. I don’t find your comment snarky as much as it’s antisocial and rude. Why participate if you can’t be decent to people who agree with you about the subject being discussed?
Great explanation. The autotune on this performance is so obvious it's almost painful to listen to. Big cheers to singers who refuse to use autotune and pitch correction.
There’s just no joy or attraction to the sound of his voice.
I imagine it’s what a fake smile might sound like if we could hear it.
"it’s what a fake smile might sound like if we could hear it" 🤣 Best description of autotune use Ever!
Good analogy
Pitch correction is the fake smile, this is more like the result of completely OTT plastic surgery.
Wow, that was brutal and so spot on!! 😆
😂😂😂😂
Omg you can hear it a mile away! I feel sorry for aggressive fans who can’t hear it, but Fil always handles such comments with grace and proof.

Fil in his British inoffensive way calling "bullsh*t" on the 'improvised' live song. Gotta love him!
Another British way would be to say that it's obviously bollocks. (-:
It is quite impressive how he managed to make such a beautiful song this hard to listen to. Now I need to go and listen to Karen.
I know it was a ferking travesty.

Autotune/pitch correction is fine if used as an artistic choice (T-pain, for example), not used to hide an artist's failings.

Pretty sure he would be unlistenable to me even with it auto tune … his phrasing and style are awful (to me)
@@jimh8633 Actually, you’re right. I don’t know if he can actually sing because it’s likely I’ve only ever heard the auto-tuned version of his voice.
Wow, that makes me feel guilty for not getting off my butt to record some real music sung by an actual singer!!!! Thanks for the encouragement!
makes u appreciate even more bands like the beatles, the who etc without modern technology but sounded so good live
same yesterday had beatles white in car while my guitar gently weeps read somewhere was basically live in studio when clapton came pressed for time and 40 something plus years ago atill sounds great just them guitars george vocal paul bass ringo drums pretty basic no special effects beatles did back then
@kaned3570
And now they're pitch-correcting the old recordings and selling them as re-mastered. Even videos! Beyond meat?
yeh was telling other viewer all the press about beatles red blue remixed in store big dollars double vinly cds but the 93 parlophone cds i have remastered by gearge martin sounded ok in the car but guess you would have to hear on high end system.mixed reviews songs great orhers lousy waste of money so hard to say
same 1988 mcmansion moving sold me the past masters set cds only missing revolver got half price only listened to sgt pepper in car same george martin remastered sounded ok to me compared to giles remix dont know
Honestly? ALL singer/songwriters that brought so much joy in our lives with their voices BEFORE autotune or pitch correction appeared. Really, that‘s a shame. Is it a matter of singing or simply making money??? 🧲💰💰💰💰💰
Lol, what a naive fan. The auto-tune is ridiculously obvious here. He sounds like the Portal song😁
"It's easier to fool people, than convince them they've been fooled"
-Attributed to Mark Twain, circa 1906.
YES!
Trump's words to live by.
@@renb6133 I stand corrected. Agree.
Lol.
He sounds a ruddy chipmunk 🐿️🐿️😂😂

😂😂
The eye roll and expression at 11:45 says it all. 😄
Now all you have to be is good enough.
I feel sorry for kids nowadays. They think this is good singing. Hopefully the next big thing will be natural vocals to stand out
dont hold your breath, music is now just about selling products, and no , not albums
Excellence has been replaced by good enough, it's a crying shame. You can hear every word Karen was singing in her performances. It was crystal clear and full of emotion which was integral to the Carpenter's artistry.
Yeah, it’s pretty frick’n audacious for this guy to put out such garbage and to expect people to like it… but I guess some do.
That First song sounds terrible... can't believe people don't realise it's auto tune.
Facts are friendly. At least he does, when asked, say he uses autotune. Hopefully, he will also label his videos ...and explain autotune at live shows. I know, that's asking too much! Great analysis with clear examples of what autotune sounds (and looks) like.
A Fantastic view Fil! Appreciate your efforts and time you put into these vlogs! Cheers! Ty!🙂✌🏼🍻💫
I like Fil so much, not in a creepy way.
He's such a nice person who's very good at what he does 🌟
People used to fiddle with voices years ago -- multiple tracks and so on -- but this auto-tune is something else.
Yikes.
His audience is probably young and wouldn't know or care.
Good grief!! Before someone attacks you and brings up an individual like Puth, you would think they would do their research 🙄 Love your videos!!!
You can hear the clicking of the snap!
Thank you for your time and effort in the explanation! :+) Also-no one can sing this song like Karen-she is greatly missed!
ref the "sprinkled moondust" part... that's just him trying to sing the least amount of consonants he can get away with.
Sounds like a crinkled old tape on those long notes.
I think audiences know these impromptu bits are very-well rehearsed performances.
Those long notes sound like the end-of-broadcast sound when there were 3 channels and the TV would show the test pattern 😂
@@pjesflol - that's where I've heard that sound before! 😄
@@Psalm1267 It hit me like a ton of bricks. OHHHH‼️
The track clips constantly when listening on headphones
Thank you for not using anything to manipulate your voice.
Charlie Puth does have perfect pitch, as does Julie Andrews. My boyfriend was a choral teacher of his for a few years and can attest to that fact. He did have a problem distinguishing between octaves, but each note was exactly in tune.
Another great, informative video. You addressed the crutic with class, as always.
Nice explanation of 'perfect pitch' and 'pitch perfect' 👍
Ashley Simpson would be so proud.
Pitch correction has not advanced to the point that it can make her sound good 😂
🤣🤣
Thank you Fil! This is a master class that perfectly illustrates what you have been trying to explain for quite a bit of time now. I like Charlie Puth, but this was an AWFUL choice for him to do live and your video clearly demonstrates why!
Would not even cross the street to watch him for free
I've been watching Jason Laughlin since he is a good guitar teacher for beginners. It's like he puts training wheels on the fretboard. I just watched a Truefire video and he talked about his gear. He says he uses guitars and amps, and doesn't use pedals. He said that when he hears a guitarist playing with X or Y pedal, they start sounding like X or Y pedal, and they sound like the other guitarists that use X or Y.
This fits in nicely with your rant about Autotune.
Oh my aching ears.
Charlie the Warbler - it sounds emotionless.
Thanks Fil, I always learn something from your videos.
Someone felt the need to become borderline aggressive defending Charlie Puth? Okay. 🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
So happy that you are doing these voice analysis videos. Keep it up!!!
I laughed every time I see you smile when you catch an obvious auto-deception. Thank you for exposing truth.
Too bad because I do like his natural voice. Congrats on 349K🎉🎶🎈🎊Thanks for the informative analysis again.
Great analysis as always
Sprinkled moon dust in your derriere. Whatever melts your butter as my dad used to say. Howard Stern is an idiot, then he said I could watch you all day 🤢🤣. That's the problem, people today look at music, they don't listen
If the likes of Agnetha Fältskog and Karen Carpenter can't hit the lines all the time, then it's safe to assume no one else can either. This one was so obvious that it's hard to imagine someone thinking he was singing without autotune or pitch correctio 😂

I did laugh out loud at the obvious use of auto tune, which is why I replied that I laughed (and noticed that Fil nearly laughed).

Great explanation. The autotune on this performance is so obvious it's almost painful to listen to. Big cheers to singers who refuse to use autotune and pitch correction.
