I watched Joan Baez give a full concert not too far back in Spain, perhaps shortly before Covid. She was still an outstanding singer but she didn't have the same range as she used to have, and adapted her performance accordingly, sipping water as she went and having a younger vocalist with her to take over some of the high parts. She acknowledged how her voice was not what it once was openly to the audience and nobody thought the worse of her for it. It was still a memorable evening. Nothing wrong with ageing gracefully, perhaps others should take note.

It's as clear as day that Ken has (sadly) been miming parts but claiming otherwise. As you and others have pointed out, a large part of KT's selling point is that his vocal programme must be deliverable live. "The proof is in the singing". Ken has mimed, claiming otherwise, and gone on the attack when challenged. It's very sad and I'm utterly disappointed in Ken for not just being honest. The biggest improvements I've seen are with my pitch, vocal stamina, and range. I also used to lose my voice almost anytime I would sing live. That really doesn't happen anymore. So it has helped. What I have heard people talk about is all of the vocal distortion talk, saying that maybe it's not great for your voice. However, with the styles I sing the most, I don't use vocal distortion. So that's part of his teaching that I haven't put any effort into. I hope this helps.

You explained it perfectly on how you noticed Ken was lip syncing in 5 ways Dan. Well done. As a very simple proof that it would be simply impossible to sing exactly the same way “twice”, may I add that I learnt a nice little trick with recording vocals. As I don’t have a powerful voice I simply double track the vocals. I saw a video of a sound engineer giving that tip. Essentially I record the main vocals a few times and pick the best one. Then I pick the next best one Chuck it to one side either left or right but put the volume right down. It’s amazing how it thickens the vocals. The sound engineer explained that irrespective of singing exactly the same words, pitch etc the simple fact of different breathing, mouth movements etc will make ia different sound. Hence Fil’s evidence proved it too. You know what you’re talking about Dan. You nor Fil could not have said things any more professionally. Keep up the great work. 🎸🎸🎸

@@diskgrinder Yeah the Beatles were big on the double track but Paul And John hated doing it because they had to sing exactly the same twice and sometimes it took a lot of takes (remember this is a band that could record an album in a day). One of their sound engineers basically invented the auto double track by just playing the same voice track again with a slight delay. ABBA also used this extensively to make it sound like both girls were singing when often only one was.

With the videos in question being in a studio/rehearsal room, I do think Tamplin was physically playing the guitar in the room. It’s just that what he was playing in the room wasn’t the audio we hear in the videos. And it’s understandable why… his picking technique is very sloppy and inefficient, meaning he would generally have trouble consistently playing the same parts cleanly. And on the first video, his wide picking motion is way too slow to produce the barrage the clean alternate picked notes at the tempo we heard them (not to mention the arpeggios we heard that he didn’t physically play).

Fascinating this. I, like you, am / have been a music professional most of my life, studied classical rock jazz etc gigging performing studio owner engineer etc etc but winding down now, spend more time teaching these days (coincidentally not far from you!). Fil is absolutely brilliant, in a way that is so refreshing and seems a really nice guy too. He's opened up Pandora's box in the last couple of years regarding the 'validity' of 'genuine' live performances from some of even the biggest names. From what I gather it also seems it's more to do with the higher up suits in record companies rather than the singers themselves who are tampering with the actually originally recorded wave forms. It's shocking to think they tampered with Freddie's vocals ! ( a BeeGees one as well I think) as Fil enlightened us all recently.
Ken Tamplin is someone I have never taken too - he spends too much time blowing smoke to the rear for me and I also noticed a long time ago, especially in his guitar playing too, that he wasn't playing or singing some notes here and there. Only personal but his voice sounds gratingly metallic for me but that's just taste. In terms of how he's behaved during this illustrates how much of a bully he must be to show zero respect for the world in general and even moreso for us musicians. I mean if he thinks as you say, that we cannot hear this stuff then it tells you an awful lot about him doesn't it? As Fil illustrated last week Tamplin is getting notes on his guitar that are not even on the guitar!! kinda says it all I think...

This was a point where the band took a quick break as they obviously knew they could never replicate that part of the recording live. No one ever complained about it cause they left the stage as they showed the video for that part.
I also wrote a fairly decent comment telling him if he had just came out and said “Sorry guys I hate to admit it but I kinda cheated on some of the higher vocals because I was sick, nervous, etc. and didnt want to disappoint anyone that came to see us.” Nothing would have came to this and whatever did would be over by now. Instead he dug in his heels and outright lied about it again, replied to comments he didnt like with “where the proof is STILL in the singing” and posted a link to Fil being on Xfactor and losing. Now, hes (or someone else I really have no idea who) are replying to negative comments on other people’s pages with “this is Ken’s lawyer…” What lawyer would actually take this on when they know there is SCIENTIFIC PROOF he is doing what people are accusing him of? Another vocal couch mentioned the fact he only sings these older bands music. Im kinda wondering if half of the stuff he posts is also from 30 years ago?

We're not trained enough, nor are we sitting there trying to nitpick it, so we can't put our finger on what it is, we just know- that voice doesn't look or sound like it's coming out of that head. I had this feeling several times watching Ken sing both on television and online- but I shrugged it off because I thought "He's a vocal coach, he wouldn't be able to get away with that." Wrong. He did get away with it, for a long time. I should've trusted my gut. Now granted, I have been playing guitar in bands for over 30 years, so I've been around a ton of live performances and watched thousands of ppl sing so- maybe that's why I was able to detect something was amiss- Idk. Tbh though, I have a hunch almost everyone got this feeling at different times from ken- and most of us excused it away.

Ken is biting off more than he can handle to- Fil knows his shit and he knows how to prove it beyond question. It’s not just the technical production of the vocal that radically changes between sections, it’s the quality of the voice itself. There is no way that the croaky, pitchy voice doing the low register parts, which is very clearly approaching the very top of its available range on the highest notes of those lower register parts, would ever be capable of the pristinely clean high register parts. Those two sounds are simply not being produced by the same larynx on the same day. You can tell it’s the same guy, but that it’s either the same guy with and without a bad case of laryngitis, or the same guy decades apart. Given that the singer in question is over sixty and clearly has no compunction about lying, my money’s on the latter.

One of the most depressing things to me is that people can't tell when something's live or mimed anymore. I see "live" videos from famous pop stars all the time that are clearly mimed. The comments are flooded with people praising their live singing. The thing is a lot of these singers are actually great singers. But that doesn't mean they were singing live in a particular video.
It's very easy to hear the difference too. It's not just whether the singer's lips line up. It's if the audio sounds too clean and the performance is too perfect. I think people need to go to a jazz club or an orchestral performance and hear some of the greatest musicians in the world playing un-mimed music. And they need to pay attention to how, even though these musicians are miles beyond almost everyone else as performers, their stuff STILL sounds imperfect. And then come back to RUclips and listen to some recent "live" performances. Once your ears have acclimated to what actual live music sounds like, it should be very obvious.

Personally I'm getting tired of hearing Ken's voice whether if he's singing or talking he's getting on my nerves with all his boasting and self promoting still. It's like he's totally ignoring the fact that he's been outed... uh, vocal wise anyway. 😳

I think that’s along the same lines as what Dan was saying about singers having more exaggerated unnatural mouth movements when lip syncing, where it happens because when they aren’t actually singing they’re much more aware and focused on what their mouth is doing. So, same thing.. Tamplin is much more aware of the mic when he’s faking it than when he’s actually singing.

At first, after so many other videos on the subject, I wrote, "Not another one of these. Most people should not be making videos. Everyone milks one thing, and few ever just have any personal creation," before I watched the video, just to see this subject covered once more, but it slipped my mind afterwards to comment after the viewing and say that your video was one of only three good ones on this matter. You are a gracious man whose coverage is fair. But what I commented at first is suitable for almost all channels on youtube, whether discussing Ken Tamplin, or tv shows a week before they air, etc.
I have lost my voice twice, once after shouting for my life when forgotten in a walk-in oven that was locked and soon to be fired up. I can sympathize with those who sometimes lose their voices at bad times, while remembering how they once sang before.

I have no dog in this fight. I'm not Ken fan or hater. I'm not a singer nor I'm a psychologist. But all that redirection and projection and gaslighting was really something to watch. One thing is for sure, this Ken guy has some serious character flaws/deficiencies. Not even so much for lipsynching and the dishonesty associated with that, but the denial and just how far he's willing to go in hopes of keeping the lie alive and this charade going.
    Just, wow.😳

He does it respectively and honestly. I am someone who can't carry a tune in a bucket but I have learned so much from Fil's videos. The RUclips algorithm deletes (my) comments all the time based on questionable words, etc. Some are quite silly and not obvious. But science allows people to cheat in music, and science catches them at it. With the understanding you and Fil are correct, if Ken would have just said "Yes, you caught me. My throat was a little sore and I wanted to give the recorded audience the best possible product." everything would be fine. I don't think saying "The proof is in the singing" obligates Ken not to do this. Ken should just be honest about it.

Good work - a great summary/overview for anyone who hasn’t been following the recent proceedings as they unfolded. And while Fil is always very careful to stick to the facts and evidence (to his credit!), you’ve been able to add a dose of healthy cynicism ! As for Mr T himself ..… I wouldn’t say he’s a narcissist, but if you check the credits for his channel I wouldn’t be surprised if his response videos feature Ken Tamplin of Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, and are Written & Directed by Ken Tamplin for KT Enterprises International. Executive Producer is Ken Tamplin for 20th Century Ken, and Special Music Effects Consultant is Dr Kenneth Tampering. Views and opinions expressed are solely those of Ken Tamplin, and are not open to discussion or criticism, and any comments posted may be deleted without notice.

If a submarine has a torpedo coming towards it, it can release a bunch of metal debris that can cause the torpedo’s homing device to essentially become confused and then attack the debris. In this way the submarine is saved from the torpedo. This is basically what Ken Tamplin is doing by spouting a bunch of gaslighting and other verbal debris. It doesn’t appear to be working very well though.

One of my bands did the opposite of Ken:
We actually multitracked a live show and used some vocal lines on the album versions since the performance had something extra.
It did require a lot of work to isolate backgroudn noise and EQ the different microphone to fit with the studio takes, but it actually worked and is something I am thrilled to try again some time.

Great video, Dan! Your points about new, upcoming bands are spot on. After The Beatles hit it big, they created a gazillion teenage boys and girls who wanted to be in bands and be the next Beatles. What people didn't know was that The Beatles had numerous "residencies" in clubs in Germany where they had to perform marathon sets for hours on end. It must have been grueling, and they must have asked themselves, "Is this really worth it?" But it was there that they honed their playing skills until they were razor-sharp. Back in England, John and Paul began developing their songwriting skill, which we know was unparalleled. Then they had the good fortune (pun intended) to team up with a record producer who turned out to be a genius and who allowed four young, 21-year-old kids to make the music that changed the world. So while it seemed to us in the U.S. that The Beatles were an "overnight success," that was far from the truth. They paid their dues, man. Kids getting together in some random garage would never...**could never** replicate The Beatles' success and longevity. They were a "once in a lifetime" thing. The kids you mentor may not like to hear what you say, but it is the God's honest truth.
As for Ken Tamplin...well...he's dug his own hole, hasn't he? His silly (over-)reaction to Fil's video was so disproportionate that other content creators (like yourself, Dan) have noticed and jumped on the dog-pile. Ken brought much more attention to himself and his KTVA than he perhaps intended. Side note: I saw Billy Idol recently (Spring, 2024, with Steve Stevens!). And although he played all of his classics, he did not try to replicate his screaming vocals from the songs he created back in the 1980s. He changed things up to accommodate his 68-year-old voice (68!!) - and you know what? He sounded GREAT! Ken should just own up to using technology to "help out" a bit in his live performances. Still a good/great singer, yeah. But sticking to the, "This is all me, 100% live, all the time," is just foolish. Nobody believes him.

Well said Sir! I’m a great fan of Fils. I’m an aging vocal coach, classically trained singer. Now, I’ve been very ill over the years and my voice dropped just like a man’s in my 30s, (after a course of medication), and I had about 3 weeks to retrain my voice for a recording session, fortunately I had the skills to help me do this. In my 40 s to 50s I was singing Calypso BV’,s harmony & occasional Lead for around 15 years, strictly LIVE, no backing tapes no pitch correction.Did it originally to help get a great front man & musician get a vocal section together, after a year it ended up being me. At under 40 I managed all the parts I need to cover. - phew! By my 50s to 60s I sounded soo different and had to continually alter my technique. Might’ve been slower if I’d avoided a seriously invasive surgical procedure. Now I stick to BVs and close harmony. All this is just to state that you CANNOT sound the same in your 40s as when you started. Rant over, loved your vid & will watch more ………. AGREE SO FULLY. x Jenn

No one can duplicate the voice at anytime. No one can copy their voice twice and as we grow older the voice will change. You can no longer sing the same high notes. For example, listen to Suzi Quatro, ABBA or Andy Scott from Sweet.

Really like Ken and his vocal tips. However there are a few things that stick out. He regularly mentions that he studied Belcanto which is a fancy term of saying Italian school classical singing and he claims that he can hit an octave higher at least above high C. Of course this is falsetto or head voice as the call it these days and yes Ken can do this (and even go higher) but he never displays a full voice high C which is a totally different sound. As for the recent live performance indeed he lip syncs many times. And this is something I fail to grasp, what's the point of doing your live performance identical to the one recorded in a studio? To satisfy who? Music as you very nicely said is art and art is not perfect. In fact perfection is the enemy of art because it's the actual imperfections and finding a way around them or accepting them that makes a true artist stand out

Actually, a lot of what Phil does is show the studios cheating, not the artists in particular... and the biggest issue he really shows is the fact that so many studios just apply vocal 'fixes' whenever the feel like doing it.. to artists who SHOULD NOT be 'fixed'. It really is a shame when they mess up the natural talented vocals of some big names and wreck the final mix in many cases. You don't need to 'fix' Freddy, Michael or Bee Gees... absolutely insane. I think a lot of engineers don't have a clue about a vocalist's instrument. Not everything must be 'on the line'. Loved your video by the way... I thought you were factual and very fair... no agenda, just a good overview of the controversy in a professional and fair and unbiased way. I totally agree, Ken should just own it and perhaps talk openly about things you do when your voice eventually starts to naturally age. Most artists lower the music a half or whole step.. (not my preference as it, to me at least, is painfully obvious and really messes with my sense of pitch) or they rewrite the vocal to keep under their limits, or like Ken (heh), they include the upper registered parts in their track. It's just a fact of life that concessions have to be made at some point... no use in denying it, instead, openly discuss how you handle that situation in your career. That would be much more productive lesson. good job on the video m8.

I've made this comment several times on different channels since this controversy began. I'm 66. In my youth, I had a 4-octave range. That was my trumpet teacher and my vocal coaches saying that. I was 18-21. I can assure you, that I do not have that kind of range now. Perhaps if I trained as I did then, I might get some of my top end back, but I'll never be able to do what I did then.

At 67 I know how much my voice has changed and how my writing has changed to suit it.

You're absolutely right in everything you said in this video. Phil from Wings of Pegasus is right as well. With today's technology, it's nothing to add in pre-recorded vocals, add effects, and even autotune live vocals. Your options are almost limitless. I'm not a vocal expert, but I've played quite a bit of guitar. I can tell you, without a doubt, Tamplin has mimed guitar in videos. That does not mean he can't play guitar. I'm positive he can. I'm sure he's pretty good. But the videos I've seen, the guitar track sounds perfect, and his hand movements don't match. Tamplin has fanboys who will attack you for pointing out the truth. I just don't understand it. No one is saying their hero can't sing or play guitar. Or that he sucks. We're mearly pointing out that he's using pre-recorded vocals and guitar in his videos. This is not an opinion. This is a fact. If you can't see this, you really don't know what you're talking about.
