Everybody is gushing over Adam's vocals and the arrangement. Well deserved, but I think the ANALYSIS is worthy of equal praise. Fil, you're an invaluable asset to the musical community!

Brian May and Roger Taylor have been very fortunate in their musical lives working with two incredible vocalists. Most don't get a chance to work with one of this caliber.
I think that it was a wise move getting a vocalist of Lambert's range, but who doesn't sound like Fred. If Queen wanted to become a Queen tribute band, then Brian and Roger could have gone with Marc Martel - who is an excellent and versatile singer in his own right - but I feel (since there's no logical reason, just feeling here) it would be selling everyone involved short. I do hope Brian gets his mojo together to write a song with the current line up.
@@rog2224 Excellent suggestion. They need to write and record with Adam. Probably the the best technically gifted singer I’ve ever heard. Not to mention the fact he’s gorgeous, and has the stage presence. He’s a born natural for this business.
I'd love to know who did this arrangement, as it is absolutely STUNNING! As for Adam's vocals, they are just insanely beautiful. The way he starts so small, so controlled, so delicate, and gradually builds and shows us the power of which he's capable, until the climax just before the end, where he lays it ALL on the table, then brings it all the way back down to the delicate, exquisite pianissimo. Just superb.

I like Cher, but "Believe" was never a favorite of mine. Hearing Adam's arrangement with his amazing vocals turned it into a completely different song for me.😮 It's like I'm hearing it for the first time. All the meaning and emotion behind it was conveyed beautifully by Adam..whereas, Cher's version "reads" like a dance tune, which doesn't allow me to "digest" its meaning in the same way. It's amazing what a great voice and a great arrangement can do!😍 Thank you for this analysis, Fil! I love Adam!❤️❤️

Ditto. Cher's version was defiant song about starting over without needing her ex-partner. It was happy and optimistic. Adam turns the song upside down. The vulnerability in his voice suggests uncertainty about the lyrics. We're not sure how much he really means, "I know I'll get through it" and "I don't need you anymore..." In fact. I don't think he means it at all. It sounds like someone on the verge of an emotional breakdown. Another thing I really like is the gender reversal. Stereotypically, the woman breaks down while men quickly move on. The re-interpretation from Adam and the musical arranger is pure genius.

side note: Adam had literally just come off an overseas flight early that day and was sick when he performed that song. to pull that off to perfection just shows what a truly remarkable singer, performer and consummate professional he is. i bow. ❤
On one of his tours with Queen he had bronchitis and still performed. His vocal strength is from a different planet.

He’s amazingly in control of his vocals… *and his intentionally audible breaths that add emotion*. It’s like watching the best singer and the best actor in one package.
He does have a background in musical theater.

That's why he put a Dent in American idol ..and idol would never be the same.. in fact ..I stopped watching it after that ..I couldn't, he was the top no one can rise above him.. and everything else looked like child games.. he literally ruined American idol LOL.. he is brilliant and absolutely beautiful to look at as well❤
While watching and listening to Adam Lambert perform this song, you’d think that it was his alone. The expressions and sadness on his face made it feel personal. My Gosh! He was just SO perfect. I mean..it made Cher tear up!! What better compliment can you possibly get? The original singer/artist shedding tears along with a standing ovation from her! She’s such a legend. Super sweet lady!

My favorite thing about that year's KCH were Cher's face watching Adam song and Lin Manuel Miranda's face realizing what "Fancy" was really about.
Adam has a stunning voice. His performance of Who Wants To Live Forever with Queen at the Isle of Wight Festival 2016 is absolutely incredible. Queen's keyboard player, Spike Edney, watched Adam performing Whole Lotta Love on American Idol and immediately got in touch with Roger and Brian telling them they had to see him. Your analysis is great Fil. I always learn so much from your videos. I didn't like how they fiddled with Cher's voice in the original. I grew up watching her on the Sonny and Cher show then on her own show. I remember her having Tina Turner on before Tina was a big solo act and they were fantastic. I'm not surprised that Adam caught up to the piano right away because he had been singing with Queen for a few years and they are the consummate professionals. I saw Queen and Adam in 2019 and it was a fantastic show. I would go again in a heartbeat.
Amen. I saw them in 2017, and it was incredible. Well worth the 10 hour drive to get to Nashville from Florida to see them.

I remember his American Idol audition and Simon's "you're too theatrical". That was an entertaining season thanks to Adam and his amazing vocal chops. Of course, he didn't win. He has such good breath control that he doesn't lose his quiet notes. You can clearly hear every word. Then he can blow you out of the hall with his crescendos. It must be something else listening to him fooling around in person without any electronics between you and that voice.

Maybe I’m being a bit cynical, but I believe he didn’t win because Queen wanted him and didn’t want him tied into the contract complications winning idol would’ve caused. It’s all business

Queen asked him to front the band on the finale of season 8. He said not yet. Queen waited patiently and after he had 3 albums and 3 tours, said I'm ready. Every summer since then it's been Adam/ Queen tours.
Nice technical analysis! And good catch! He's classically trained and so as Luciano Pavarotti teaches - you must be ready to start your song seconds before the orchestra. Covered sound. Adam did that arrangement. He was famous for re-arranging songs on idol but THIS ONE he's done for years and years. He flings out the ear monitors at most of these shows because the engineers can never get them adjusted properly for his rare voice. But he's the ONLY one who can stay in tune when the sound is shitty. Past shows with Gaga, Xtina, of course Taylor, and others all go off key. With Queen he does signals the whole night when necessary.
Great choice! Adam is one of the most talented vocalists out there today. Phenomenal. No wonder Queen wanted him. He had Cher in tears.

This was such an amazing performance. It's up there with Heart's tribute to Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven. Iconic performances in my opinion.

Thank you for doing this analysis! I have been a fan of his back at the beginning of his American Idol days. You could just tell he had something special even though it was more "raw" back then. He has said repeatedly that singing with Queen has definitely shaped his performance and his attitude towards music and professionalism. In every interview he is always humble but still unapologetically himself. I knew this version was different but until you gave your explanation of the chords, I wouldn't have known why. Great review, I enjoy all of yours!
Fil, I have been an Adam fan when I first heard him on American Idol. I saw this performance on t.v. Your breakdown is incredible. I played sports on a high level winning championship through my life, however I would trade it all for your talent to play sing and teach. You my friend are fantastic. To this day I still can not play an instrument or sing well, but I enjoy to the fullest your videos. Kudos.👍👍👍
Adam is immensely talented..his voice is mesmerizing. He does this song 100% justice. Pretty sure Cher had an epiphany of sorts after he finished. Just incredible and I felt Cher's version was more of a dance club tune but this!!!

Brilliant analysis, Fil, with the added bonus of hearing your lovely voice. There aren’t enough superlatives for Adam Lambert’s skilled performance of what was pretty much another generic Cher-rendered dance tune. Adam’s performance transports all of us to a higher/deeper realm, as evidenced by the audience’s transfixed, visceral reaction. Command Performance takes on a new meaning in the hands of Adam Lambert. An absolutely stunning performance. Thank you Fil for your detailed analysis, quite possibly your best.
I really get tired of people trashing Cher because she did something for effect when others were not doing it. Her career has spanned so many years and she has proved herself time and time again. Let's remember that she is a legend and it is NOT because she uses auto-tune.

@@PorcelainLeigh Very true. But Cher has never hid behind it. I remember when she sang on the Graham Norton show, Graham went out of his way to make sure everyone knew she was one of the few singers who always sang live on his show, and never lip synced.

I could never relate to this song until Adam Lambert's happened.
Adam has always had a flawless sense of dynamics -- when to "hit" it and when to back off -- a trait he shares with Cher. He's got power to spare, but knows when to unleash it and when to keep it under control. And yes, most singers would make a blood sacrifice for that kind of power and control. I don't know if it was Adam's idea to do the song this way, or the music director's, but this was a masterful choice. You really hear the tune and the words in this version. Absolutely great performance.

I prefer light and shade. Adam Lambert's voice is too beautiful to just blast out his vocals all the time.
It was Adam’s idea. He had to convince the producers. The musical director who he worked with on the. Arrangement was the fantastic Michael Orland, who was musical director at American Idol for the first 16 years.

Fil, this is fantastic. Expands my appreciation of all that goes into a performance like this. I believe that this arrangement is by Michael Orland who worked on American Idol when Lambert was a contestant. Adam sang a version of this then, a snippet of which was aired during "Hollywood Week"; yes, I know more about that silly show than I like to admit. You should check out his Idol performances of Whole Lotta Love (Slash was the mentor that week and there are scenes of him in rehearsal with Adam), Tracks Of My Tears (Smokey Robinson appearing as mentor) and A Change Is Gonna Come; his three best on the show, for me.
I still go back and listen to those songs. I loved it then and even more now.
And I really liked his version of 'It's a Mad World' by Tears for Fears
I did like Cher's version but Adam's is a different type of perfection. So powerful, another dimension. Audience is in the palm of his hand.
You feel power from a whining singing ? That is a real myth.
The first time I watched Adam's performance I wasn't prepared for my emotional reaction. It really struck a nerve. It was a vocal masterclass- so controlled and filled with emotion. His Broadway background really shows in both his vocal delivery and stage craft- this really was the Broadway showstopper version of Cher's classic dance track. I was lucky enough to see Adam in concert with Queen a couple of years back at the Glasgow Hydro. He was spectacular. Freddie's boots are impossible to fill but Adam brings his own big boots and adds a whole new dynamic to the band and to the music. It was one of the best concerts I've ever attended- his vocals were sensational.I find it strange his solo career has never really hit the heights he deserves. Somehow he never quite gets the right material or something doesn't connect with the wider public. I suppose the public tend towards mediocrity and blandness most of the time
I'm one of those who loved Adam and his talent from the first time I heard him. I eagerly awaited his solo albums and was disappointed every time. Your comment about "never quite gets the right material" hit the nail squarely on the head.

As You mention Cher's and Adam Lambert's verson are so different. I would say Adam nailed it in this performance not to mention singing live in the present of the iconic Cher.

Thank you for opening the eyes of an old guy. I'm a big Queen fan having grown up with them in the '70s. When Queen decided to continue playing as a group with another singer I thought omg. The first time a heard Adam I thought to myself what did they do? It seems like I get very protective when it comes to bands changing their balance so to speak. Then you come out with this video and I'm curious what you have to say about him. I listened to his performance live and was really impressed. Having listened to him sing and watching your analysis of how he sang it I think changed my mind about him. You did a really great job once again. Thanks
My thoughts are.
Adam is a good live performer (adjustable if something happens, reliable, good live singer).
Everyone else is really good (meaning Tyler and Neil (Brian and Roger is a given).
The line up is pretty long term now. (Road crew too).
Adam is different to Freddie so i can keep the two entities seperate.
They all seem to have soo much fun up there in their concerts.

I agree. Adam always knew how to dress for the occasion, even back in the American Idol days. No matter the genre, he would dress and look the part. Also, he can sing any genre of music. The mark of a true artist.
Wow he's good, wonderful, accomplished and emotional singer. I so so want to see Queen with Adam next summer.
Cher's version feels like resilence, I should be ok, not sure you will be. She is asking, or unsure. Adam's version feels to me defiant, I have survived this, you will not. Adam's version is more emotional, sharp words with emphasis that is a statement. Being slower with lower notes, brings the words to the top and center. I love both versions. I like the look on Cher's face. She felt Adam's performance. A song she has sang and heard many times sounded new to her. Wow is right!
One thing that really makes this great is the audience. They sit quietly and enjoy the performance only clapping once towards the end at a crescendo. So many modern performances are ruined by modern audiences constantly clapping and cheering all through out a song and drowning out the actual performance. The only place you can actually enjoy live music anymore is the symphony or opera. Any band or singer of modern music is completely ruined by modern audiences, except in rare cases of educated audiences of professionals like the Kennedy Center.
I hear you on the annoyance at that type of behavior by audiences but as a fan of Alison Krauss I can tell you she at many occassions sang an audience into revered silence. So you know...not only in symphony or opera.
For anyone who lived through the 70s and early 80s, every ounce of this feels like a generational homage to an icon, especially the way he looks at her just before the end. Adam embodies the depth of appreciation while giving the most masterful, haunting, and beautiful version of Cher's song. One of the most stunning live performances of all time. The context is so important.
I appreciate that Phil respects the performances he analyzes. To me that means context and he always brings all the relevant background that he can get. I’ve seen other reactions to this performance of Adam and they are don’t bring much value.

@@barrydavies998 well, a guy who makes tons of videos pointing out autotune said no autotune at the start and never pointed any out. So, either he missed it or there is none. Not to mention the fact he liked this comment and didn't correct it.
Adam did a similar thing when he was on American Idol. He sang the BeeGee’s, “If I Can’t Have You”. It was so different than the original which was more of a disco dance track. He sang it slower and brought in all the angst of someone in an unrequited relationship or otherwise could not be with the person he loves. He was exposed with his heart on his sleeve. Had me mesmerized.

Adam Lambert grew up in theatre, so his ability to sell us on the emotional level of a song is ingrained. While on Idol, he was generous with his help when other contestants were trying to pick music or arrangements. Truly a remarkable musician and human being.

@notfiveo Yes, that was an amazing example of an American audience showing their sickening homophobia toward a young man who was clearly the winner, and that had to be humiliating for the young man who "won" (who had to sing the "easy" part when they both sang with Queen on the show.) The young audience members who saw this happen were affected, one way or another, by a dark force of the nature of human beings.
@@mollyhall2954 It's been years. I remembered feeling crushed when Adam didn't win. But then again, by that time American Idol was already established as having preference for WGWG. Funny now all the most recognisable and successful ex contestants are anything but that.
Adam's sexual orientation didn't even come to mind. It just felt like he was robbed because he wasn't fitting into the box (musically, appearance and style wise) created by majority of the audiences and people on idol. But not that you mentioned it, yeah him not being straight could be a factor too.
Still good on Adam for working hard to be where he is now and being one of the most successful alumni of American Idol.

@@voulafisentzidis8830 @Voula Fisentzidis I didn't say anything about his sexuality affecting his vocal ability. He was and still is an amazing singer and perfomer. I love him. He was my fave contestant when he was on that season.
All I said was his sexuality (and notice sexuality was my afterthought, I mainly mentioned his musical style and appearance) probably didn't fit into the imaginary box people on Idols and the majority voters have created during that time. Most winners during that time were White guys with guitars (and probably assume straight too). Adam was very open and frank about his sexuality even back then. And maybe that didn't come across well with the producers and most of the viewers during that time.
Simply love your analysis, Fil. Adam Lambert is, what I consider, one of the top performers out there today. He has a phenomenal voice and range and he “performs” his music beautifully. So many professionals in today’s music industry are just “painted ponies” who are created by the industry and do not have the level of talent that used to be required by performers of yesterday. I believe Lambert’s second place in American Idol was simply due to his overt sexuality that they were not quite ready for at the time. He was undoubtedly the best performer in that group. With this performance, I think Adam knocked it out of the park. The song touched your emotions and hit the “feels” big time. Your analysis was spot on and I couldn’t agree more with how you broke it down! Very informative, enlightening and entertaining…Thank you, Fil!
I remember Paula Abdul saying she just couldn't wait for the next show to see what Adam was going to come up with. In the end they chose the handsome clean-cut boy the girls liked over the extrovert gay. If it was just down to the music, the other guy would have got nowhere near.

This "Believe" performance is outstanding. He makes it look so easy when really I think it would be very hard for many vocalists to replicate at the same level. I liked the song, because I mean it's Cher, but I never felt an emotional connection to the song before I heard this version.
I rediscovered Adam with the release of the QAL live album in 2020 (❤️). Something that has been really interesting to me is discovering that I enjoy much of his solo music which as a mostly classic rock fan was a little shocking. His studio recordings are good, but honestly to me Adam is actually better LIVE vs a studio recording. Which I think is rare especially in todays world of auto-tune and lip-syncing clicks. Also, Adam never seems to sing a song live the exact same way, there are always little trills, riffs and runs that make each one interesting. I have to think all his vocal training, musical theater experience, combined with having one hell of a powerhouse voice has given him next level abilities and allows him to sing in any genre he wants to.
I think his years working with Brian May and Roger Taylor singing the music of Queen has probably taught him a lot, too. He has their decades of experience to learn from.
I never felt an emotional connection to this song before either. Beautifully done, and I was so moved when Cher wiped away tears. I did too. It hit me & I hope Adam records it, and releases it.

If Cher had made a big comeback with a ballad, it wouldn't have had the same impact as a modern dance number. Women have always struggled to keep their careers and reputations after middle age. Completely unfairly.
So, she made a good choice. Just as Adam Lambert made a good choice to make this version all his own.

Cher's arrangement is about rotation and reach. Pop rock back then is dominated by the likes of Matchbox20, she would be really out of place. For ballads, she would not be able to compete in appeal against Britney, Christina or Mandy.
Club scene was big in those days, so I think the production feels she has an opening there if she went back to her disco era. Perhaps they got the cue from Madonna's Ray of Light.
That Auto-Tune use is ingenious at the time because of the WWW explosion and Y2K bug craze, so it makes marketing sense to keep a more 'robotic/digital' voice.
Adam's rendition is perfect for a tribute event. It's supposed to touch hearts and it shows.
Very well said. I would only add that, as he's a gay man who grew up listening to Cher & experiencing her influence on the community, Adam was a brilliant choice to interpret this song in particular. He was fully able to connect with Cher's declaration of trust in oneself, as well as drawing out the underlying pathos in the lyrics.
In short, he took a gay club banger & showed us the torch song at the heart of it.

What interested me most was how he kind of emulated the auto-tune yodel on the chorus. With a voice like his, I would have sung it more glissando ... I think Adam chose to hit each note weirdly purely as an homage to the original. Very cool.
He took one of my absolute most hated songs and turned it into something remarkable while still keeping something of the original.

When Adam was on American Idol, the contestants were given lists of songs for men and songs for women. He asked them if he could sing a song from the girls' list, something no one ever ever asked to do before, and they gave the okay. And that's how he first came to sing Believe.

I loved seeing him pull his ear monitor. This is the first time I've heard this excellent singer. Wow. I did feel emotional as I listened. Much more so than the original. Fil your dialog has fired up my goal to learn dynamics. I'm a bassist. I'm now thinking more as I play, about applying how Adam sings and expresses, to my playing.

I saw Adam Lambert at a former movie theater in Covington Kentucky. He gave an awesome concert. I thought being such a offbeat venue it would be your typical 5 songs I'm outta here show. He still gave 100%. That's a professional IMO.

Adam can sing anything. He's an amazing vocalist and, is it just me or...can anyone else see an astonishing likeness to Elvis in his face and eyes? Adam dressed in black leather looks almost like Elvis did in his 1968 TV comeback special. I find the likeness to a young fit Elvis is amazingly surreal.

I was a little apprehensive; Freddie's voice was magical; so I'm really pleased to hear Adam's range and his voice sounding just beautiful.
This is a great, uplifting song. I always forgave Cher using autotune because she was a great singer and she carried it off - attitude is just as important in pop. But hearing this different interpretation is lovely - it's no longer a song of defiance but of self affirmation.

Adam right out says that he is not trying to replace Freddy, just honor his music. He’s a perfect front man for Queen and doesnt try to copy Freddy, but puts his own take on the songs. Have fun when you finally get to your concert.

Loved watching him doing his rock covers auditioning on American Idol. He was outstanding from his first note of singing. I called friends to say "you have to listen to this guy!!".

Damn he's good! What a great arrangement and performance. I love this way more than Cher's original, which I never did care for. My favorite episode of Adam's on American Idol was his duet with Allison Iraheta.

Love Cher, but Lambert's version of Believe is really the best by a mile. He brings out the emotion of the song that wasn't as obvious in the original. Cher's version is an anthem, but Adam is really bringing out all the meaning. It's as if he is acting out the words, except he's barely moving -- it's all done with his voice and the arrangement.
That was a great performance and a great analysis once again.. to me at some points it almost sounded like he was replicating her voice... When an artist can make the original Artist cry... That says a lot for the performance 👍🇺🇲

Everyone around the world who can't sing wishes they had that control. Cher's version had more of an empowering/empowerment, girl power, triumphant, feeling. Adam's feels like working through the heartbreak, the journey through and answering of the question. Reminds me of George Michael's singing voice.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. This performance is on the same high high level as Heart's tribute to LZ at the Kennedy Center Honors. My wife and I are both musicians and have been watchers of American Idol since season 6. As such we watched Adam from day one and have been huge fans from the beginning. This is makes me so happy for many reasons and proud to be a musician, albeit my skill level is nowhere near Adam's, or Fil's for that matter. Still, we get the job done and enjoy ourselves. I will listen to his performance of this again many times over the coming years. Just like I do Heart's.
Oh, my God, Heart just stunned me at that performance. The last band/vocalists I could have imagined doing a PERFECT Zeppelin was "Heart" - but whoever paired them up was a GENIUS. After seeing and hearing it, I just sat there for about 3 minutes, mouth ajar, before I remembered I could rewind and listen to it 15 more times.
It was Heart's masterwork.
I never imagined ANY group of musicians capturing every nuance and note of Zeppelin in their absolute prime - but this group of vocalists and musicians did. Anyone who hasn't seen it should - immediately.
While I agree that this is a spectacular performance, I still wouldn’t put it on the level of what the band heart did with the song “stairway to heaven”. That’s still far and away the top and best cover I’ve ever heard in my life. But I’m not mad at you if that’s how you feel, lol.

I'm not sure, actually. 20 years ago, Cher's version was more like a dance version and it served that purpose well indeed. This arrangement here is beautiful, but it's a different beast altogether. Both are great in their own way, but I agree, this version here is so beautiful.

I would not underestimate Cher’s musical chops and assume she doesn’t understand the effects of different arrangements of a song. She has been a musician for more than 50 years.

I'm almost disappointed that you didn't get out the keyboard to show his range, since this was an amazing performance.
And you mentioned the bass guitar, but couldn't show the real notes on your regular guitar. I know you play bass, since you have played many songs where you play all instruments. I think it would be interesting if you gave a bass tutorial, since it is such an integral part of any song.
BTW, this was a really enjoyable video. You are getting back to what you do best, talking about real talent, and not canned talent.
