So many good facts, here. Gosh, look at Liam and Noel’s hair when they started in Oasis. So Beatle-ish. And Zak Starkey drumming for them. Ringo’s kid. 🎸🥁🎤
Their hair was really a Ramones reference
Good video. Tbh, as a big fan of Oasis and an even bigger Beatles fan, it's always annoyed me the somewhat lazy way in which people tend to label the former as rip-offs of the latter, when the vast majority of their sound, chord sequences, arrangements and melodies are nothing like The Beatles. It's just, as you say, they wear their influences very much on their sleeves. And it's usually just a riff here or outro there, a pretty obvious homage, rather than an entire song they're copying. Their most blatant rip was probably for Cigarettes & Alcohol, where the intro is literally the riff to Get It On by T-Rex, but after this riff is finished the rest of the song is completely different. And it's not like they don't expect people to notice this stuff; it's deliberate.
In my opinion the Beatles influence is pretty superficial; lots of lyrical references and the odd hook or arrangement. Their more pertinent influences are bands like The Stone Roses or a lot of the shoegazer bands, as their first two albums are awash with distorted guitars and that "wall of sound" sort of production. There's also a heavy blues influence, which can also remind you of The Beatles, because of those distinct dominant 7 chords. Pretty much every Brit Pop band was heavily influenced by 60s British Invasion music, it's just some of them were maybe a bit smarter about it than the Gallaghers, who really just wanted to make good rock 'n roll music.
Jamston Julian mate you hit every point spot on. I couldn’t agree more
I agree - with regards to the shoegaze point oasis on the first 3 albums always attempted to create a wall of sound in a way not too dissimilar to slowdive on when the sun hits for example. If I were to name a single band pre-oasis who sound the most similar to them I'd probably go with their creation labelmates Teenage Fanclub
@Jamston Julian I completely agree. In fact, I've long thought that Noel specifically brought up the Beatles all the time to distract from the more obvious Stone Roses influence.

Anyway, a lot of fans of The Beatles despised and some still despise Oasis because of that big lie of "Oasis is a copy of The Beatles"
The excuse ? It´s always the same: the intro of Don´t Look Back In Anger.
Oasis put in their melodies some "touches" of Lennon&McCartney melodies, but they always had their OWN SOUND.

I watched recently this documentary about the L.A. Laurel Canyon rock scene in the 60's. In it, Beach Boy's Brian Wilson talks about the album Pet Sounds which is famous for influencing Paul McCartney (and The Beatles) to do Penny Lane and to a lesser extent Sgt. Pepper, as I understand it. However, Brian Wilson said in that film that he was influenced by The Beatles's Rubber Soul (or was it Revolver?) to do Pet sounds! It goes around and around. I wouldn't doubt for a second that Paul McCartney was influenced by Oasis on his more recent works.

I was just about to say the same thing lol
One thing I missed in your explanation was the use of cadences. For example, for lack of a better term, I call it “sharpening the dominant chord”. For example, if a song is in C Major, a normal cadence would be F>G>C, but Beatles would sometimes go F>G#>C. Another example exists, which I’ll call “Majoring the Dominant-Parallel”. If the song is in C Major, the dominant parallel would be E Minor, but the Beatles would play it as E major. Eg C>E>F>G>C (all major). These cadences can be heart often in oasis music also.
To me, the most obvious influences of Oasis are:
Stone Roses
Beatles
SLADE
Sex Pistols
Neil Young
La's
Stones
T-Rex
And then you can see things of great musicians here and there, from electronica, from soul music, from punk, folk or whatever they were listening in that moment but the core of their music is inspired, in my opinion, by these musicians and made in their very own way.
The influence of the Beatles is huge but it's not the only one, I guess the image, the whole references in lyrics, the fact that they mentioned them all the time and a handful of songs very beatleesque (Up in the sky, whatever, don't look back in anger, roll with it...) did the rest to oversize the debts.
You forgot The Kinks, they rip off a lot from them.
Forgot about “Free As a Bird” and “Let There be Love”

"Love is a time machine,
Up on the silver screen,
It's all in my mind,
Love is a litany,
A MAGICAL MYSTERY,
And all in good time,
And all in good time,
And all in good time"
I’ve never really heard the whole Oasis sounds like the Beatles thing personally. They sound a lot more like other bands.
They don't really sound like The Beatles. They sound like they WANT to sound like The Beatles.
@Luke Guess that's your opinion, but I see it differently. McCartney's musical genius alone, whether in composing, arranging, or performing, dwarfs Oasis.
How many legendary musicians rave about the ground-breaking innovation, influence, and creative brilliance of Oasis?
Objectively speaking, one group has a legacy that reaches far beyond their time and genre, and the other has the Gallaghers. Really no comparison at all, IMO.
@Luke take Michael Stipe out and listen to Peter Buck's melodies. You'll see some Oasis there. But REM is heavy influenced by Yardbirds and Neil Young :)
What’s so good about that statement is that’s how basically every artist finds their own sound- by trying to sound like their favourite artist/band and failing, therefor creating what is their ‘sound’
Yeah exactly
Oasis blowz
I enjoyed watching this well done mate 👍
i think that’s what made oasis so good. although the beatles are timeless, oasis were a tad more modernised and fitting for the 90’s audience. some of their lyrics are incredible
Who Feels Love has a guitar part which is similar to Lucy In The Sky’s intro. Furthermore, the vocals reminisce to Rain’s inverted coda. Thank you very much for your videos, I am learning a lot with them
well done, David
Another reference is that the guitar solo in “Roll it over” is similar and definitely inspired by “Come together”
Similarity to The Beatles even in the name - William John Paul Gallagher.
His son's name is Lennon
no digas mamadas
Yes of course! Paul McCartney, John Lennon and William Shears
Wow
It would be great if you did a video where you analysed the chords and melody notes Noel is hitting over them to create the sound they do.
Oasis literally copied chords, vocals, sounds, ryhthms, styles, from different The Beatles' songs
Oasis is a great band !!!
The Beatles...the best band!
Really great video ! I would like to see you do a video about some tricky, inventive chords progressions. I think Arctic Monkeys are really great at that (especially the last album where they get some jazzy vibes, for example : Golden Trunks, She Looks Like Fun, Anyways the b-side. Their older stuff as well where they get easier chords progressions but it's still inventive and surprising for example : Only Ones Who Know, No1 Party Anthem...) It'll be very interesting I think. Anyways, thank you for your videos it's always nice.
I'm always amazed at the lack of serious critical analysis of Arctic Monkeys music. They're immensely talented musicians. Alex Turners lyrics too just blow my mind. I know they're really famous and everything but I still feel they are kind of weirdly underrated.
"Sing a song for me, One from Let it Be" from Be Here Now
Amazing video! I just think I spotted an error, at 4:46 I believe those strings are from the song Whatever? cheers!
yeah, somebody else has already spotted that! I've pinned a correction. Thanks for the comment though.
@@DavidBennettPiano Thanks for your videos man! keep the great work!
i love David Bennett, he was so clever and straight to the point for explaining things, that's what a teacher should it be
'An ongoing conversation over generations"...me likey! Nicely put.
the book called "The Songwriting Secrets of The Beatles by Dominic Pedler" lists a few examples of musical influences on Oasis, and perhaps more interesting that just 'direct lifts'.
For example: The opening lines on Hey Jude and Live Forever are the same intervals. The Triple Fourth root movement used in the harmony on Wonderwall is the same as a few songs of that time, not just The Beatles, but in particular used in Here Comes the Sun, and A Day In the Life.
The book also makes the reference not to get too hung up on the direct piano riff lift on Dont Look Back On Anger from Golden Slumbers/Imagine, but that the vocal melody is similar to Manfred Mann's Pretty Flamingo.
Your videos are absolute gold
Thank you! That means so much :)

I disagree with this statement in direct reference to this exact example of Oasis and the Beatles. If your song has the same chords, melody and rhythm as a band you have learned to emulate it's pretty likely that either you knew you were stealing and didn't stop yourself, or you planned to steal from the beginning.
Preach!!!
I'm a person who knows like 5 songs of Beatles and Oasis. And I enjoy them all as much as I can. I guess fans of both bands can provide their own arguments but as far as I can can tell they both provided us with awesome music!
The Beatles had a few more songs than 5
I once accidentally downloaded a cover version of Strawberry Fields Forever while I was searching for Oasis’ Lyla (I didn’t know either of the songs) and I spent like a year listening to it without realizing the truth. It kinda sounded like Oasis, I didn’t even question it until I heard it on the radio and it was a completely different song.
