The following points may be please be noted in this episode
1. It is a factual error to say the hotel was inaugurated in 1985. That was the year it entered into agreement with ITC Welcomgroup. The error is regretted.

Taj Coromandel was inaugurated in 1974.
In 1982 -83 this hotel was Holiday Inn. Then in 1984 it changed to welcome group. RV Iyer

Very good piece of information. The iyer’s name is Parameswara Iyer. His coffee was very renowned for its taste. It is another matter that it was very expensive and beyond the reach of the common man. In the late eighties, a portion of Thayir Sadham was 150/-

Sir, can you provide the history of Chola Sheraton? I am not sure as to what is its current name. I am referring to the one at Cathedral road near the Gopalapuram road cutting… I used to walk by this in 90s while working for TCS and remember seeing a stone plank that Gandhiji had stayed here
Gandhiji certainly did not stay there. The hotel came up in the early 1970s and was developed by the ITC Group. After decades of franchise arrangement with the Sheraton group, it went by a sub-brand of the ITC Grouo called Fortune hotel and recently has been rebranded as a Welcom hotel.
@@VSV659 Sir, I meant that before that hotel was constructed there, Gandhiji had stayed there… I remember seeing a stone signage board which can be read from the road also. @@gjayaractually yes - there was a property owned by or associated with Rajaji - Gandhiji was his guest then and the plaque commemorates that visit.
My father owned a brick chamber named Gokula Krishna Brick Works. During 1974, I remember ECC company was constructing a hotel building. My father supplied bricks for that hotel building construction. I went several times in our lorries to that site!
Pls address the city as Madras whenever talking about its history.
As a school going student along with my friends we have seen this being constructed. We have walked thru the in gate and walked off the out to gate, using this as our short cut 😊. We have seen cricketers get into the bus/out of the bus. Especially the West Indian greats.
I remember Iyer's special delicacy, Vazhaipazha dosa which carried a special mention on the hoarding hanging outside the hotel.

I have stayed in this hotel several times when it was Holliday Inn and Adyar Park between 1983 to 1987. I was in a Pharma company. RV Iyer
The hotel was opened much before 1985. I remember that on the day Indira Gandhi was assassinated (October 31, 1984), our school was closed for the day and we were asked to go home. Since all transport had been stopped too, we had to walk home. I clearly remember walking by the Adyar Gate Hotel on that day.

Hello This hotel was first tied up with Holiday Inn group and was inaugurated in 1980 , ofcouse we had a good association with the hotel , I still rememberI stayed in the hotel in 3rd Sep 1981 because it was my wedding day

I worked in that hotel from Oct 1982 to 1984 end. So it was operational earlier than that
I am one of the lucky guest to open a sealed brand new room on the second floor & stayed at the Adyar Gate Hotel in 1985 which was still not completed at that time.
The 250-room Holiday Inn Adayar Gate opened in 1981 on the site of the gates to an old "garden house".[1] It was built by Adyar Gate Hotels Limited (AGHL), established in 1970 by T. T. Vasu (one of the owners of the T. T. Krishnamachari Group, aka TTK) and K. R. Veerappan. Later renamed the Holiday Inn Madras, the hotel was taken over by Welcomgroup Hotels in February 1985, when the controlling stake in the company was acquired by the Goyal family for ₹ 30 million.[2] The hotel was soon after renamed the Welcomgroup Adayar Park Hotel.

Five star hotels had relevance in the 1980s where the major industry was manufacturing which had headquarters around Mount Road and Parry's corner. But now it is only service industry like Information Technology dominates the scene and they operate remote mainly in the outskirts. Their requirement is not luxurious stay but well equipped conference rooms, internet, compact rooms with comfortable bed to sleep and an average cost. That is why 3 star hotels flourished near airports and outskirts with less traffic issues. The 5 star hotels all over India are facing crisis and many would follow Adyar Gate Hotel route.

Most of the information are incorrect pertaining to this hotel...as I have known this hotel as Holiday inn from 1982..and they have recruited me in 1984... And I have played a big part in this hotels development and rise of dakshin restaurant....and towers operations..

As far as i know the goyals bought majority of shares sometime in the niceties.
Goyals had garment business andctheir own brand also.
The property opposite anna arivalayam was their garment making unit.

Bashyam is the Sun Family Benami reality business along with Gsquare. Maran Family has already made sketch for Tenampet TVS area and this Adayar Area. BY this purchase through Bashyam Sun Family will have full control over Gopalapuram, MRC Nagar, Sterling Road(mostly DMK Shell type company). Now expanded to kotturpuram. Annamalaaiji has already started probing. Soon truth will come out

I remember in and around 1971 there were two large British era houses in the property. These two bungalows were demolished to build the hotel. I still remember that when i used to college i used to see TT Vasu and his foreign wife gazing at the property where construction was stalle. I thought that it was at this stage the property was sold.

80 களில் பண பிரச்சனை வந்து ஹோட்டல் கட்டுமானம் பாதியிலேயே நின்றது. கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு பாழடைந்த பங்களாவாக காட்சியளித்ததை பார்த்துள்ளேன். அந்த பாதியில் நின்ற கட்டிடத்தில் ஒரு சூப்பர் ஹிட் படம் "நூறாவது நாள்" சூட்டிங் முமுவதும் நடந்தது. இந்த படம்தான் சத்தியராஜ்க்கு ஏற்றம் கொடுத்த படம்.
