@@helen-marie3562 Both buying and moving house is considered essential travel. We moved into our rental about 4 days before lockdown (previous rental, the owner retired and needed the house to live in) - so we have to move or stay here for another year. Truthfully one of the most Beautiful and Relaxing videos I've ever watched, you really have managed to capture the spirituality and raw beauty of these amazing islands, 👍
This is a meditation on Orkney. Beautiful way to portray many of the isles. We are going perhaps next week. NW and N Scotland. A different world. If the weather is kind leaving is heartbreak.
Thank you for getting me outside my coach for the wind, water, and earth! Just got back from a "Highland Fling" with Globus. The country is so drop-dead gorgeous I found myself weeping at its beauty and quietly took it all in from behind the coach window. Loved your compositions, music, and light!
Hello. I, ve been living in Orkney for one year back in 1972 and with my wife we dwelled in the last house down in South Ronaldsay that belonged to some English friends living in Evie, main land. That was just before the north sea oil changed everything. It was a beautiful period of my life. I'm from Italy, from Sardinia, another island!!!!!!
Hello Edouardo, thanks for watching and getting in touch to share your experience. We can well imagine how different things must’ve been back then. We’ve never been to Sardinia, but expect that it must be very beautiful 🙂
Thanks Mark. We enjoyed our brief wander round Stromness and definitely thought it was worth spending more time in. Glad to hear this video is making you consider going back. Making videos always has that effect on us and Orkney is certainly no exception. Thanks again.
I grew up in South Ronaldsay, the southern most island, and found this video was perfectly balanced to reflect the desolate beauty of those islands. Wonderful to watch, thank you.
Thanks for watching and appreciating. We didn't explore much of South Ronaldsay beyond St Margaret's Hope and Wheems campsite, but the coastal scenery around the south of the island sounds particularly nice. Do you go back to visit much?
@@GoingTheWholeHogg Sorry for late reply. It has been a long time, too much to explain, but I went to the local school - St Margret's primary - and then to KGS (grammar school) I live & work in London for the money, but a bit of my heart will forever be in South Ronaldsay and the cliff walks I enjoyed a s boy. Great video, again, thanks :)
I was fortunate to have 3 days on Orkney for my job in 2018. I have travelled a lot but have to say that Orkney is magical but people will have to visit it to understand what I mean.
I love the care you take over your edits. Its so easy to fall into doing something that you think will work for YTube instead on concentrating on what you are good at. I spend my life fighting the urge to take short cuts and drop clips in with balancing the audio etc, so I fully appreciate the presentations you two make. Carry on!
We really appreciate that. It's always good to get feedback from someone who understands the process and what goes into it. We often get frustrated with ourselves over how long it takes to produce a final edit, as we just can't help trying to make everything as good as it can possibly be. But we've definitely learned over time to focus on quality rather than trying to chase what we think works on RUclips. Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment. Like I said, we greatly appreciate it.
Thankyou so much for this video. I was incredibly lucky to grow up on orkney, in Stromness, from 91 to 2001. Haven't been back since maybe 2012 so was so lovely to see this, especially in lockdown. Drone shots were incredible.
Thanks Sam, really glad to hear you enjoyed it, especially as you grew up there. Those drone shots over the Old Man of Hoy were some of the best we've been lucky enough to get. Otherwise, the weather was a bit challenging. On Sanday, we never flew the drone once because it was so windy. Next time! Anyway, thanks again, happy we could ease lockdown a bit.
Going there in August. Loved your video and will be checking out your other vlogs and info. Spending a week in Kirkwall then another with a group touring the ancient sites, it’s a dream trip for me.
That sounds great Sherri, so much to look forward to. And two weeks is a good amount of time to spend there. Thanks very much for watching and we hope you have the best time 😃
Hello, Thanks for a great video, its very inspiring to get ourselves up to Orkney again this summer, I have an old schoolmate who has lived on Orkney for over 20 years now having marrying a local lass, got up to see for a few days in 2012 and a lovely time me and the wife had, we have visited Scotland many times over the last 30 odd years mainly on motorcycle ( not just the NC 500 I must add ) but next time we will get across the Pentland Firth to visit Orkney again. Thanks again for great video, well appreciated.
Hello Keith, you're very welcome, thanks for watching. That's great if we're helping inspire you to get back up there and visit your old mate again. Clearly you know Scotland well, and riding a motorcycle is such a great way to travel. Hope you get the chance soon. Thanks again.
Awesome video! Im Sanday born and bred, my folks and Grandfolks still live on the Island, my Grandad was the last serving keeper of the lighthouse. I had a little chuckle when you mentioned you had Sanday almost to yourselves, people that then do visit are surprised at how good the beaches and sites actually are. 👍🤣 Love showing people round when I get the chance.
Oh wow, that's cool your grandad was the last serving lighthouse keeper! I'm sure he has lots of stories to tell. The beaches on Sanday are just stunning, definitely glad we made the last minute decision to visit!
I am Australian with Orkney Island Scottish Ancestry my Great, Great, Great Grandfather Heddle came from somewhere on one of those Islands, he was a Stone Masonry
Interesting video. In October 2019 I spent 3 days on Mainland and did the usual places, having never been there before but had been to Scotland many times (Glenlyon). The people were friendly and helpful. The middle day was a full on gale but unsurprisingly the Ring and Skara Brae withstood the blast. Of course, remember the Wireless Museum (!) and St Magnus' Cathedral in Kirkwall. St Magnus' is outstanding; I think it was John Eliot Gardner of the Monteverdi Choir who, after recording all of JS Bach's many cantatas throughout Europe and Britain, said vast St Magnus' was the most authentically ancient cathedral of all he'd visited. Indeed, it is a great treasure.
Thank you Alexander. Actually, we were there at a similar time. All the footage for this video was shot in September 2019. We were on a month long trip around the northern areas of Scotland and the weather was a real challenge, with Orkney by far the windiest. We had a great time nonetheless. Never made it to St Magnus' Cathedral but have since read about how special it is. We'll make sure to visit next time. Had to Google 'Glenlyon' - looks like a good place to live. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.
@@GoingTheWholeHogg And thank you for your reply. Sir Walter Scott described Glenlyon as the, " longest, loneliest and most beautiful glen in Scotland". :-)
One of the best travel videos I have seen. The filming was high quality the accompanying music perfect for the scene and the travel information at the end really helpful. We are hoping to visit Orkney in October, COVID restrictions permitting and will watch this video many times before we go and visit your website. Thanks for such a great production.
Thanks for your great comment Philip. We really appreciate that feedback and are delighted that you both enjoyed the video and found it useful. Hopefully things will be under control by October and you will be able to travel to Orkney. Thanks once again.
Thanks so much Shweta. We really appreciate you watching and taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment. We would definitely recommend it as part of a wider Scotland trip if you ever get the chance. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks again.
Gosh this is such a good video. Many many thanks. I found your separation into two halves worked very well for me - the scenic full of ambient music views (suitably volume adjusted to minimise irritating wind noise!) and then undiluted well presented info about hows and whats. We're very lucky to have a son and his wife in Edinburgh, so we can combine visiting them with launching from there into the rest of Scotland. We've 'done' the Borders, Arran, Perthshire, Stirling, Argyle, Mull, Gairloch/Poolewe, Moray Firth, NE Skye, Lewis and Harris .... guess where we want to go next?
Haha, Orkney perhaps!? Sounds like you’ve been a fair few places already but of course, plenty more to explore. Thanks for the appreciation, we’re glad you liked this style of video as we really think it works well. But yes, Orkney can be a very windy place which makes it a little challenging, especially when recording sound 😅. Thanks again and enjoy Orkney when you get there 😃
Thank you! Fabulous in every way. I visitedOrkney in 2005 on a day trip fro John O’Groats. A bus met the ferry and the guided tour was crammed full. I remember it all well. I know I will never travel o/s again but armchair travel is good too. I will have to be content walking on beaches here in Australia, and doing some small scale camping. As an aside, the Quigley sisters played Celtic music at the Port Fairy Music Festival many years ago, before my visit to Orkney. They described their culture on Orkney so well, verbally and musically. I remember it well.
Thank you for watching and appreciating, Elisabeth! Was it seeing the Quigley Sisters that made you want to visit Orkney in the first place? It's a good thing Australia has plenty of beautiful beaches and camp spots, lots to enjoy without going overseas.
@@GoingTheWholeHogg thank you for your reply. Prompt too! Maybe it was. It could have been Wrigley, not Quigley. They were sisters, composers, violinists and storytellers, and very funny. I was a schoolteacher, interested in geography, history, culture etc. the sisters described their cold windy treeless island. I was impressed, because I remember it so well. Learning a musical instrument is compulsory on Orkney due to the long periods people are confined indoors. They must have something creative and edifying to do. Well, here we are in Victoria enduring long Covid lockdowns. If we were as well prepared as the Orkney children we would be better placed to keep our mental health and humor. I was also impressed with the recount of the sensible headmaster of the Orkney school who declared the students could remain on holidays because the proper holiday dates were ruined by wind and rain. Yes, I took it all in. Now those things are cultural, ie, how people adapt life to their environment. It is not about scenery. You can’t see that on a bus tour. In 2005 I took a year off work to travel. I used hostels and public buses and travelled very lightly. The UK was so meaningful for me. All the English Literature I loved and studied was laid out before me. Also the interesting history. BTW, I was born in Holland and was a child migrant to Australia. I also loved going to my home country. As for Australia, what a great land. This year when there are no Civid restrictions I want to deepen my love of indigenous places and culture. I have an indigenous friend and artist to draw upon. Bit long, but, you did ask! Thanks for your work. Regards, Elisabeth
@@elisabethbenn1572 Ah yes, the Wrigley Sisters, they established The Reel in Kirkwall, we went there for a drink and to listen to a session. Lovely place and great music. How brilliant that their stories were so memorable. And what stories they are! I love that the headmaster extended the holidays. I can't imagine that ever happening at my school. It's nice to hear that your UK trip was so special, but also that you are interested and keen to explore closer to home as well. I hope the restrictions will ease soon. All the best, Kim.
Great vid. You have an eye for composition and storytelling. We visited the Orkneys a few years ago and really enjoyed the visit, especially various neolithic sites.
Thanks Vince, much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it. We also enjoyed seeing the neolithic sites. It really is quite incredible how many there in such a small area, and how well preserved they are - a big reason to visit Orkney.

Those drones and cameras are incredible. Shots like this could only be taken from an aircraft only a short time ago an the quality blows me away. Digital photography I think, is the greatest thing to happen to photography since the box camera. I love it, and this is coming from a guy who had a dark room back in the 70s.
Yeah, the footage always impresses us, and we don't even have a particularly 'fancy' drone. I was very into film photography in my late teens and learnt how to use a dark room at school, so was quite resistant to getting a digital camera at first. Now (many years later) we couldn't be without digital for the kind of work we create. It would be nice to get some use out of my medium format cameras every now and again, but too much is already stuffed in our backpacks, no chance they can fit in! Kim

But yes, Orkney can be a very windy place which makes it a little challenging, especially when recording sound 😅. Thanks again and enjoy Orkney when you get there 😃
Wow. This is great. I hope to get to Orkney someday soon!
Thanks very much! Hopefully you get the chance soon. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time as there's lots to see :)
Just discovered your blogs and really are enjoying them. Absolutely love Scotland in all seasons.
Thanks David, glad you're enjoying the videos and guides!
@@GoingTheWholeHogg thank you, Kim.
I’d to move there, from Malta.
It’s got a lot to recommend it, but it would be much colder than Malta, and Malta is quite nice too, no? 🙂
@@GoingTheWholeHogg used to be nice it’s all urbanized and over populated.
Incredible footage!! Been to Scotland on camping trips several times, not been to Orkney yet but that will be next on the list!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it and that it's inspired future Scotland adventures. Enjoy!
Some of my family heritage is there. Love it.
Yeah, it’s a wonderful place.
SUPERBLY presented, wicked footage. Many thanks.
Thank you, Paul! Lovely feedback to hear. Glad you enjoyed it.

Wonderful footages. This is what one must see.
Very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching : )
This is so lovely ❤️❤️. Some friends and I took a trip to Orkney back in 2004ish. This brought back so many memories. Thank you ❤️
Thanks for watching, Melissa! Glad to help bring back those memories. Did you have a favourite spot in Orkney?
Kim
Spectacular 🥰 awesome beautiful fantastic amazing outstanding vlogging and scenery, this is on my trip to do list, and where my ancestors came from, thank you for sharing, all the very best.
Thanks for the wonderful feedback! Hope you can visit sometime soon. Cheers! Kim
So beautiful! I need to move to Scotland right meow!!
Ha, yeah scenes like this always make us miss home!
wowzer. feels like im watching a Scottish 'Baraka'. Fantastic videography.
Thank you, David! Had to look that up though as hadn't heard the term before, guessing it's the non-verbal film? Sounds interesting. Anyway, thank you for watching and appreciating our work! Cheers, Kim.
Freedom beautiful thank you
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much! Good thing there's public transportation. I am so not used to driving on the left side of the road!!!
Or sometimes the middle of the road because it's single track 😅! Thanks for watching, are you planning an Orkney trip this year?
thanks for this film, Orkney was on my list for some time, going there since it's unexplored , full of excitement
Have a great time!
I'm really enjoying your beautifully put together videos. Best wishes 🙂👍
Thanks, Robin! Glad to hear it : )
Quality filming and editing and a whole heap of useful information - thank you for sharing. We had to cancel our trip to Orkney and Shetland last June but we rebooked for this June. Fingers are firmly crossed that we'll be able to go. Along with the usual maps and guide books, we'll be taking your film along with us. Thanks again.
Hi Ian, such a shame that last year's trip got cancelled, definitely fingers crossed for this year working out. It's so nice to hear that our film is up there with your planning resources!
