    Excellent.
You heard about a possible issue, then did preventative maintenance at your convenience rather than have a catastrophic failure.
The water pump was a "while you are in there anyway" situation.
The water pump probably would make its issue known this summer. Probably near the top of Bad Ash Pass.
Or somewhere in a remote mountain range in August.

Very lucky with both finding someone that could do it and that it was half way out when you opened it.
A good breaker bar is a good tool to pickup yourself Harbor Freight has one $20 Item #62729 for a 25 inch 1/2 drive bar with a handle or $14 for the same without the handle so good to put a pipe on if you need extra leverage. Good for changing the belts as he showed and also good when you need to change a wheel. Some extensions and socket sets with larger size sockets for working on diesels and you are in a better place on tools you need.
Now remember to feed and water the mechanic as good mechanics are always ones you want to keep happy.

As for shop fees, most repair centers follow a factory "bible" that lists the time and money a shop should charge this way there is some standardization between dealer shops. Non dealer service centers also tend to follow this bible to a degree as well. Within the prices stated for various jobs they have figured in cost of goods needed for the repair, the mechanics pay for this job, shop overhead ( lighting, heating, cleaning equipment, environmental charges levied by governments ect.) but they also can cut their prices a bit to be more competitive against dealers. I have seen shops charge for basically double since they replaced the water pump as well since it was based on the removal of some equipment and the inconvenience of working around other obstacles. A proper shop would only charge for the water pump and a few bucks more for a bit of the labor since the engine front was already dismanted.
    Keep up the good work!
Blessings, peace and happiness to all!

That dowel was BARELY sticking out although saying it was “halfway” out is more dramatic but yeah it would have maybe eventually fallen out. Mine was the same. I made my own dowel tab out of a large washer. Good insurance for the future. Pain in the ass and 30 cent part. Cummins is PROUD of their gaskets though aren’t they?? Also your mechanic didn’t mention it but I cleaned out the thread hole and cleaned up the dowel tab bolt and Loctited the shit out of it with red Loctite just to make sure. I also took out every other bolt inside the case and Loctited them all. Those are notoriously loose when you check the torque while doing the dowel pin fix. I like your machanic. I’d like to have a beer with that guy and talk diesels.

I saw a guy put self taping screw and has done it a bunch of time and no pins fell out but when it gets time to fix a front seal then they go a head and fix the pin the right way and he just cuts a piece of metal and cuts it like a tear drop and drills a hole in the big end and big enough the bolt will slide threw it and tap pin and metal tab in and put the bolt back in and you done.

When those engines are manufactured, that dowel pin aligns the aluminum timing gear housing to the block. Great in theory, but a *H U G E* blunder for later down the road when it comes loose!

So how long can one expect to spend doing this on a 1995 Dodge 2500 4x4 PU---with having to do it outside--no rack--with basic hand tools and with air tools that can be used where there's room? Truck currently has a really bad crankseal leak right now, --approximately 240K on it and runs good. One can see the slight tear in the seal. I am assuming that the KDP hasn't moved to the point where it's ready to come out---and honestly don't know if it's already been done at some point, but assuming it hasn't. We've had the truck since 2007. I have worked on quite an assortment of vehicles in my life, ranging from Packard straight Eights to Volkswagens, along with 25 years of circle track cars and engines (largely American Motors stuff) thrown in. But I have little diesel experience--having only owned a 7.3 Ford IDI and this Dodge. I have been quoted around a grand to have this done. Can a person make the retainer tab himself from maybe a piece of 16 guage and get a replacement bolt that might be a little longer and engage a little more thread? Also, am I safe to assume that the radiator will have to be removed in order to make room to get at the front of the engine? And what of the intercooler and anything else I haven't thought of? I am a little bit like a fish outta water on this project----don't really want to do it, but also can't afford that kind of price tag to pay someone else. Your video did tell me alot, though, and I appreciate it--any tips would be welcome.

I noticed you haven't crossed off "rear pinion seal" yet, if you're patient with me, i might be able to get that video put together in the next couple weeks. I'm sure i have one in my fleet that needs doing.

no rush on that video. it is still on my list of things to do and has been there for 2 yrs now. I just keep topping it off until I figure out how to do it, or find someone to help me do the repair. BTW: I may be passing thru Texas in October, if so, I'd love to visit your shop and get a tour while promoting your channel.
