I'm one of those few that love this one. Probably because it's the only one I had on tape as a kid. Also the James Bond-esque music and the tropical island set made for a nice change of pace I thought. I thought the bank robber was one of the most memorable characters of the entire showa era.
I love it as well, and thought it was a great debut film for Jun Fukuda and Masaru Sato's upbeat music fits the color and style of the film perfectly. I realize it's not for everyone but this is one of my personal all time favorites of the Showa films, love watching it every time.
I love it as well. It's just so damn goofy.
Same. To be honest, I think this is one of the channel's only trash takes. These critiques are incredibly tired and contrived imo.
Same. I have a soft spot for this one because I had it on VHS and watched it a lot, so it’s definitely nostalgic for me. The island setting is fun and I actually am entertained by the characters when Godzilla isn’t on screen. Plus, that 60s surfer soundtrack is so bad it’s awesome haha! Not to get too off track, but I wonder if the surfer sound to the music was intensional, since it’s a sea monster Godzilla fights, because if it is, that’s hilarious 😆
for a movie with a title "horror of the deep," the music is too whimsical and i loving it, and add some goofy scenes with goji haha
I don't know why, but underwater monsters have always seemed to be more viscerally disturbing to me than the more terrestrial ones.
I agree but I find that to be true of real life creatures as well. Probably at least partially because I can't swim.
True. They can just pull you under.
This movie is a guilty pleasure for me
Yeah same. I know it’s not as good, but I still like it.
I wouldn't go so far to say guilty pleasure, bit I do feel like I enjoy this more than is typical. I like Ebirah as a concept (he would make a bad starting monster in a video game), and the human plot is... Fun. The fact that Godzilla was originally supposed to be Kong is the main flaw I feel this has.
But of the two "island adventure" movies, I think Son of Godzilla is legitimately better.
Strangely i thought the soundtrack was the best part.monsters offered no threat to Godzilla which made the movie very bland.
The combination of Godzilla and surf-rock is pure cinematic gold!
It's sad to see this movie was supposed to be a king kong movie and yet godzilla gets to be in the movie it would be interesting to see king kong and mothra on screen together oh well let's wait if kotm or gvk does this
Daamn I never thought about that. Kong and Mothra...hm.
@C_Smiley probably
I come from the future. It unfortunately hasn't happened yet.
@@BaldPerspective 😆 yeah not yet
She and Kong where in the new empire
Definitely not the best film of the franchise, but I have a soft spot for island adventures in the Godzilla mythos, and watching Godzilla take out a James Bond style terrorist organization, the first time any military in the franchise were the bad guys, was a fun twist. Ironically, I feel like several future alien invasion plots of the series would have made more sense if they had been evil organizations led by humans instead, like how the apemen of the MechaGodzilla duology of films needed earth scientists to fix & upgrade a giant robot that they themselves designed and built in the first place etc. I just think it would have been interesting to see Godzilla take on more Spectre/Cobra style organizations like the Red Bamboo over the years (still enjoy the alien invasion plots mind you), though it looks like something similar to them is set to appear in Godzilla, King of the Monsters, so maybe the wait is over then lol.
That sounds awesome, those are some great ideas.
In hindsight I think it would have been best if they had made the original Kong movie this was supposed to be....or when it got canned, done something instead of just inserting Godzilla into the script.
Toho back then doing literally anything to save a buck lol. I'm surprised they weren't bought out or closed down in the 80s
It’s supposed to be a shrimp. Ebi=shrimp in Japanese
I wonder what happened if anguirus took Kongs place instead of Godzilla
I think that would've been amazing. Let's also face it, even if Kong was in this film, the history of gorilla suits for Toho aren't the best and Kong fighting in water would've looked bad.
It would've been great, Amguirus needs his own film and this would've been the perfect opportunity to do so.
So you mean anguirus vs the sea monster
Flawed this movie may be, but It's far from forgettable.
My first Godzilla movie‼️
This is one Godzilla movie I love! I have a blu-ray copy that I watch once a month. I think Ebirah is a great Godzilla villain. Four stars in my book!
I wore out my vhs copy this as a kid. I had this and the US King of the Monsters cut of the original for many years of my childhood. I loved Ebirah's design and found him very menacing. Now being older and having seen many other Godzilla movies, this one is pretty laughable. But still holds a very nostalgic place in my heart.
I like this one. One of the several Godzilla films I had on vhs as a kid.
Watching this in honor of Akira Takarada's birthday!
This was the only Godzilla VHS we owned as kids, so I rewatched it A LOT.
My first Godzilla film, love this movie
Honestly Ebirah might be my favorite Showa era Godzilla film. Regardless of its budgetary constraints or origins as a King Kong project. It evolves Godzilla into a more intriguing personality, features human characters more vivid and likable than the usual stock military and scientist types, and its story is a veritable compendium of Sixties cinema tropes. Couple that with Jun Fukuda's energetic direction and you have a lively comic book adventure that gave me tremendous joy growing up.
Big soft spot for this one. Was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw as a little kid. My parents got me a Trendmaster Godzilla action figure (the smaller one) and I immediately paired it up with a Slobster (lobster bad guy from Street Sharks) toy. Immediately became my favorite things to play with in the bathtub. Masaru Sato's score is forever burned into my brain.
Not the best entry in the series but I always found it to be oddly entertaining.
I just finished watching Ebirah, Horror of the Deep for the first time and I gotta say, it was really good! I like the change from High Stakes to lower stakes. It doesn't deserve its hate. There's just one thing though, from the start to the end of the plane fight, Godzilla's suit looks the same from Astro-Monster but with a bit of wear, but by the time he destroys the Red Bamboo Base his face looks HORRIBLE! It might be the wear from the water scenes like you said but it was so noticeable. Masaru Sato's score is also memorable!
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
There's a reason why Godzilla looks like that. Eiji Tsuburaya, the special effects director, wanted to used the head of the Godzilla suit for monster on Ultraman. Well, the head was damaged when Toho got it back and to continue filming this movie, they had to quickly build another head for the suit.
Before i learned about the release dates of each movie, I use to imagine this film taking place after King Kong vs Godzilla (ironic given who was suppose to star in this)
In which Godzilla after being beaten by Kong found himself on the island recovering.
Something I find interesting is how lightning being used to power up godzilla would later be used in godzilla vs mecha godzilla. almost like this could act as foreshadowing.
The quality begins to dip but later picks back up.
Up from the Depths: *"Ebirah seems like a more natural fit for Kong then Godzilla."*
Son of Godzilla:
I have a sentimental attachment to this one. it was the first Godzilla movie that I ever saw and collected
Great movie.
I've been enjoying your reviews. Been a Gfan since I was 5. Now 34.
Ebirah Horror of the deep is so nostalgic for me. It was one of the first g films I grew up watching since I was a kid. The plot of it being on an island was exciting for me even tho now I can see it's limitations.
It definitely would have been a great Kong film.
I am open to disagreement but I think that Kumi Mizuno may be the sexiest lady to ever appear in this franchise.
The only competition she has comes from Final Wars and Shin Godzilla imo, even then I'll definitely take Mizuno in her prime over the others. She's a classical beauty in the Toho films from this era, and good heavens is she gorgeous in this film in particular
One of, if not, my first Godzilla. Oh yeah. My Dad picked the Perfect movie to start with.
For that fact alone, I love this movie
I enjoy this one a little more than you do, but yeah, you're spot-on about its problems. When you're discussing the state of the Godzilla suit, in the video one can actually SEE poor Haruo Nakajima through the tearing peek-holes in the suit's neck.
I've read two manga adaptations of the film; one is a super-cartoony "digest" version only a few pages long, but the other one is...incredible. A whopping 166 pages long, it pole-vaults over the film script's clunkier nonsense and opens straight away on Ebirah's attack on the boat. Our heroes are the very-young brother of the missing fisherman and two of the fisherman's old chums. One is a skinny, cowardly reporter (providing both the comic relief and exposition about the search and the villains); the other is a gentle powerhouse who, as the reporter eventually ferrets out, is a fugitive wanted for robberies but has gone straight. Isn't that SO much better than "Let's board this stranger's boat and take a nap as guests of the guy pointing a gun at us! ...HEY HOW'D WE WAKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC!!??"
The whole story reads like a Johnny Quest adventure that happens to have Godzilla in it. Also: it's astonishingly violent. The first indication (aside from being wrecked by Ebirah) that something is amiss on the island is when they stumble onto a man's corpse torn apart by machine-gun fire to the point that he can't be identified. Some clues suggest he MIGHT be the missing fisherman, leading to one of the brother's frequent melodramatic crying fits. When the ship bearing slaves arrives on the island, the commandant marches them up to a cliff, selects three as "examples" and whips them until they fall into the sea, whereupon they are crushed to death in Ebirah's pincer and eaten as the commandant laughs. Dayo snatches up a rock and clobbers him IN HIS BAD EYE before escaping. Ultimately ALL the bad guys get graphically beaten to a pulp (by the heroes) or crushed to death/eaten (by either Godzilla or Ebirah). Even Godzilla's awakening features some horrifying violence as the leader of the squad searching for our heroes dies screaming in the lightning strike, and his men are smashed underfoot after foolishly opening fire on Godzilla.
The story still follows the basic plot of the film, right down to Mothra's last-second appearance, but there is no Giant Condor, no one accidentally rides a weather balloon to Infant Island, and no one pretends to be a bush. There's still plenty of contrivance (the mistaken identity of the machine-gunned man, for example; plus Dayo provides the length of wire needed to shock Godzilla by UNRAVELING HER NECKLACE) but man, this manga should've been the movie.
Is there a place to read this? Sounds freaking interesting.
I'm watching the Showa era for the first time, but this is easily my favourite Godzilla sequel so far. Doesn't get weighted down with the familiar 15 minute sequence of miniature tanks and planes on open fields, or that 10 minute sequence of the Mothra larvae wrapping up Godzilla - a much snappier film, appropriately.
I honestly always liked this film and even more so with my recent rewatch. It just really has a fun and decent plot with good pacing all around! 👌😁
This movie is 5/5 for me, I’d always have to pick a few vhs tapes to bring to our cottage at the time and everytime we would be down at the beach and always simulate stomping into the shore line like Godzilla when he first encounters ebirah 😂 something about the colourful island setting and my love for the beach and crystal blue water just makes this movie so much fun! I’d always look out into the water and just imagine Godzilla and ebirah popping out of the water for their final battle. Great times :) such a fun film and is in my top 5 favs
This is the first Godzilla movie I owned, it a was a birthday present.
Curse whoever disliked the video
While I have no ill will towards this movie
I personally love the music where Godzilla first wakes up.
I really wish Kong would've fought Ebirah, (and Ookondoru) He poses more of a threat to Kong, (A creature who can breathe underwater and based on an animal who can swim), rather than Godzilla (A monster who dwells on land, as well as the sea and oh, can breathe atomic fire!).
This dumb little movie will always have a special place in my heart, because this was my FIRST Godzilla movie. It's not great, but I still love it for that.
I watch all of Godzilla movies everyday
Imagine this being remade with THE MONKEES! Go ahead.
This is one of my favorites! It has an exciting adventure story, with characters that DO develop, and the monster scenes are icing on the cake! You should watch Kaiju Noir's review. It should help you appreciate it more!
Other artifacts of Kong being the hero monster include the heroes awakening Godzilla by using a sword as a lightning rod (Kong gained power from electricity in the Toho movies) and Godzilla trying to fight Mothra at the end and just being brushed off (The two monsters were allies by then, but Kong had never met Mothra)
This was my first Godzilla movie, and I gotta say that nostalgia plays a huge part in me liking this one. At that time, I wasn't as much of a Godzilla fanatic as I am today, but I understood enough to like it. Watching the Japanese version with English subtitles helped, because if I had watched the American version as a kid I probably would've been scarred for life by just how bad that dubbing is.
Ebirah is a really interesting Godzilla movie , masarho Satohs score is really good, this is also my moms favorite godzilla movie
It would be interesting if the MonsterVerse brought back Ebirah but this time as a Kong monster like he was supposed to be.
Just saw it for the first time and it was honestly kind of fun. Very different from the previous films but the pace definitely helps.
Personally I enjoy this one - used to watch it a lot as a kid and even as an adult I still find it entertaining.
This movie is awesome 10/10
100/10
Even after finding out the origins of this movie, I still enjoyed it as a kid and I like it even as an adult.
I would like to point out to that this movie came before Son of Godzilla a movie that most fans dislike due to it making Godzilla "softer" I believe Ebirah was the movie that either inspired the idea to move Godzilla from Anti-Hero to full hero for the remainder of the Showa series.
I really dig this movie. It created the "Godzilla on an island" archetype, & it's a breath of fresh air from most of the past entries. Ebirah is cool, to me, despite his name literally being "Giant Shrimp;" I don't look at him & immediately think it's a man in a suit. I wish this were a Kong movie, since I don't like the English version of King Kong Escapes & we can't watch the real version, but I like to pretend this film happens in between KKvG & MvG. Also, less than 1K likes!? Come on, homies, let's push the likes past 1K!
I actually really like this movie. It’s very entertaining, has a solid cast, can be genuinely funny, and has a super unique feel to it when compared to every other Godzilla film.
This is awesome and ebirah is awesome just a awesome moive
Honestly I enjoy this movie more on DVD because on VHS the underwater fight scenes were barely visible and you couldn't ever tell what was going on.
While not one of my favorites its fine enough, and has the childhood nostalgia factor. Would've been better had they been able to do it with Kong tho
Looking forward to when you get to Godzilla's Revenge. That should be amusing.
You might be surprised.
I actually really liked this movie as a kid, but I haven't seen it in ages, so I'm not sure how I'll feel once I get around to watching it as an adult.
That being said, I was long ago made aware of the original intent for the film to be a Kong vehicle, and I whole-heartedly agree that the film would've been better if it had been. Not only would this particular film have made more sense (not just in terms of the interactions with humans, but also being revived by lightning, finding Ebirah to be a credible threat, not having a connection to Mothra, etc.), but it might have helped the franchise as a whole in the long run. If they had used Kong, and the film made enough profit, Toho might've been able to retain the rights to Kong for a while longer, and maybe we'd have had more outings with him and Godzilla. Take the Heisei film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) - Toho wanted to use Kong, but their rights to the character had long expired by then, and Universal only agreed to give up the rights if Toho gave them $9 million, which was more than the entire budget of the movie, so they switched to Ghidorah. I, for one, would've loved to have seen Kong appear in the Heisei era.
I don't know I kinda liked it. Wouldn't mind seeing Legendary bring in Ebirah
They Can have ebirah in monstervers. They dont need to Ask toho to Get ebirah.
Reasons:
1: his name means shrimp
2: his design is based on a shrimp/lobster
In my opinion this is one of the best films in the franchise. It isn't boring and it brings a fresh and enjoyable human story in the Godzilla films, along side with GvMg, GvMg2, GvMg (2003) and kotm
I like ebirah horror of the deep. Imagien if the replaced ebirah with ganimes insted :0
@@Crazy_Rabbids and if Godzilla was replaced with king Kong like in the original concept :0

I actually really enjoy this one.

I luved that movie 🤣😃💯💯💯it was my 2nd favorite Godzilla movie 😃🤣😆😆😀👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽💯💯💯💯💯
i dont have time for a franchise rewatch before i see the new movie so your series is turning out to be the perfect recap
This was my first Toho movie i bought. I got it for about 50 cents at a yard sale, I was in like 3rd grade.
Get your money back.😂😂😂
This was my first godzilla monster as a kid. Got it on VHS near my old house in London. Now at 31 I still like it though there are a lot of better movies. For me 3/5.
Since godzilla was supposed to be kong in this movie: what would happen if you took kong skull island and did the same?
i was hoping to see ebirah in the monsterverse but oh well
In my opinion
Akira Takarada=Good film
Having just watched this movie, while it's pretty cheesy and this movie was meant for Toho Kong originally, I actually think it does a good job towards the character development of Showa Godzilla. The main reason being is, Godzilla has never actually taken the time to observe humans that don't attack him, so he would naturally be inquisitive of their nature when confronted with humans not in their usual domains. The thing I liked is that they didn't have Godzilla actually go as far as to pick up Daiyo like Kong would a human female in his movies; Godzilla just looks at her all confused as if he's expecting her to attack him like all of the other humans. If Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster and Monster Zero were meant to be the start of Showa Godzilla's heroism, this movie is what makes him more tolerant of humanity, particularly the ones that have no ill will towards him. That in turn cements Showa Godzilla's status as a protector kaiju in the same vein as Mothra, IMO.
honestly I like this one solely because Godzilla hits Ebirah with a suplex in the ocean lol
Not the best Godzilla outing to be sure, but fun anyway, AND it also gave us one of the BEST episodes of MST3k.
So you’re saying this movie would be much better if King Kong was in this?
Can you please review Megaguirus. She is formidable but doesn't get to much love from the fanatics.
Lobster...yum.
I actually like this one more then Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster
I know you didn't write this movie and wouldn't have an answer, but I have to ask why did Mothra not do something about the Red Bamboo gang harassing her followers?
SIDEBAR: EBIRAH IS SUPPOSE TO BE A GIANT SHRIMP ! !
bring on the hot garlic butter sauce ! ! ! 😃😃😃
I’m sorry but I love this movie and I don’t care what anyone says
Disagree: I much liked this film, albeit was a bit bemused by the few instances of randomly-interjected beach music into action set-pieces.
Idk why, but I like Ebirah Horror of The Deep, Godzilla’s Revenge and Godzilla vs Hedorah.

I really wish Kong was in the movie, it would be do much better
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I realy like this film. I like the movies villian ebirah. And its more intresting that the movie is on a island insted of aliens trying to take over the world.
A different type of Godzilla film. And the results are a mixed bag. Ebirah is one of Godzilla's blander enemies as he is just a simple Lobster with no unique abilities. The red bamboo are also laughably incompetent, Godzilla's suit design is also not good, And the fact that Godzilla and Mothta don't wake up intill the 3rd act is one of this films biggest flaws. But what saves the film is the pace. The pace is always fast so you never feel bored, also the characters are actually kinda fun and I do like the 3rd act. When Godzilla, Mothra and the human characters have to escape the island before the bomb blows up. That adds tension. These dont save the film a whole lot but it does make the film pretty fun. I will give this a 5.2/10.
he is a shrimp
@@Crazy_Rabbids No

How Dare You Insult Mothra's Look in This Movie! How Dare You!
How to Pronounce Ebirah's Name: Uh-Beer-Ra
Sorry, I’m a vegetarian.
Middle of the road for me, Ebirah is the most boring from a concept perspective
Yo really hate this movie
