The year emperors new grove came out, we went to Florida, we went on the animation tour. They had storyboards up of a teenager brushing a little girls hair on a bed... the animator stressed that the teenager wasn't the child's mother but sister... they never said the characters names, nor do I believe that they said anything about the over all story or what the movie was. I eventually forgot about it... until Lilo and Stitch came out. I got to see the storyboards for Lilo and stitch.
Here is a Fun Fact: In Chinese culture, dragons bring good luck and are worshipped, but in Western culture dragons are the villains and are disliked because of their danger. So, it is very wrong to call it year of the DRAGON because that is not correct to Chinese culture (although it IS commonly used but technically WRONG). So, a lot of people will translate it to “Year of the Loong: (from the Chinese word for Dragon: 龙). Btw this comment is just a fun fact, it is VERY common to say “Year of the Dragon” although just keep in mind there is a BIG difference between the Western dragon and the Chinese dragon.
I think that's different because Jake Long isn't just Chinese, he's Chinese American, which is why he's the _American_ dragon. So, it makes sense that his dragon design and abilities are more American-esc.
The Mulan Parade is a Core Memory event for me. I got to sit right on the curb, and one of the street performers came up to me & gave me a nice paper fan. I still have it.
9:07 I would do LITERALLY anything to get duffy and friends back to Disney World in Orlando.... I miss duffy and I remember getting my stuffed animal at the grand floridian when I was 6, went back the next year and not a trace of duffy was in sight. WE NEED HIM BACK! Time to protest ya'll HAHA
Actually, I think a Disney executive said that it was actually a mixture of translation basically most of the humor that Eddie Murphy had didn’t translate well so most of the viewers didn’t really care for Mushu as much the kids love it, Mushu it was and that’s why he’s like really big Shanghai and Hong Kong Disney park
Dan, you said something that caught my attention "Chinese New Year." That was a buzz word I heard growing up in the 80s and now I see DL celebrating the Lunar New Year which I know is more native to Korea and China. It would be great to shed some light on these celebrations as Japan does not celebrate Lunar New Year and I see many people wondering if San Fransokyo (which is largely Japan influenced) will have decorations for Lunar New Year. Japan celebrates the calendar new year. Loved your video as always, thank you!
Looking forward to when you talk about the 3 little pigs costumes and see your reaction to that one DeviantArt pig costume from the early ice capades shows (Seriously WTF)
This was a cool video, Dan! I wish Disney went all out with the dragons for this year, not just Mushu and Figment, but also The Reluctant Dragon, Jake from American Dragon [2000s nostalgia], Eliott, and maybe a NEW Maleficent dragon animatronic. Speaking of Dragons, I am having HUGE nostalgia for Dragon Tales lately. Admittedly I am having nostalgia for 2000s era PBS in general. I hope you'll one day do a Bob The Builder costume evolution, and when you get to the infamously ugly looking 2015 reboot version, you could use the Spongebob "MY EYES!" clip. What was Mattel thinking?
I always thought Mushu being a more western style dragon was intentional. He’s the lone African-American voiced character in an Asian cast, his name comes from ‘Mushu Pork’, a dish invented in and for America, he’s an outsider because of his large and braggadocious personality, and yes, he breathes fire.
I really appreciate how you went over the cultural context of dragons in China! Especially the association of dragons and fire mostly being a European thing. Mulan as a movie hits the mark so well in terms of culture in most aspects, but things like using a dragon over a phoenix (or even any other mythical beasts!) and some text in the movie being clearly copied off a take out menu can take away from its merits.
The irony with the phoenix in the Mulan live-action remake was that it used the absolutely wrong mythos for the phoenix. It would've been a lot safer to make Mushu a cute, marketable water dragon and eat the imperial controversy since that's at least Chinese instead of Western.
I remember going through that section as a kid. And I do mean “as a kid” from 32 years ago. Miss out of going back again. Also, I still have a DVD/Blu Ray player. Cause of the last three PlayStation consoles, still works as a blu ray player. But my PS2 works as dvd player, if I needed one.
I don’t care if he’s inaccurate I like Mushu, voice actor is off but still doesn’t bother me. I just like a Dragon companion. Xp Also the Mushu art on the left in your thumbnail where did you find that? =o
Waiting for evolution of: Telly, Zoe, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, Baby Bear, Goldilocks, Murray Monster, Rosita, and other Sesame Street Muppet characters, evolution of Bonkers, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, The Rescuers walk-around character costumes, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Popeye, King Louie and Baloo, Rafiki, Timon, Banzai, Shenzai, and Ed, Scooby-Doo, Spider-Man, Huckleberryhound, Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble, George Jetson, Jimmy Neutron, Horace Horsecollar, Jaq and Gus, Dudley DoRight, Woody Woodpecker, Phil from Hercules, Robin Hood, Little John, etc. The Three Little Pigs, The Mad Hatter, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Shaggy Rogers, Blue from Blue's Clues, evolution of Bob The Builder, etc. 🎥🎥📺🎥🎥📽️📽️📽️📽️🎬🎬🎬🎬
you showing the dvd extras for charlie and the chocolate factory is so funny because i think my sisters and i used to watch those just as much as we watched that movie!!
I 100% remember the Mulan Parade. It was my favorite thing at the time. EDIT: I was NOT expecting the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory DVD bonus features segment. I also wasn't expecting to remember so many of those bonus features haha.
I saw the Show with the animated Mushu and a "Animatior" explaining how these movies are made in Disneyland Paris in the early 2000s. My first in Disneyland ever and since. I remember, that there where Headsets to change the Language wich can be heard on the Headsets, it was even German within and I think I can recall, Mushu was Acted by the original german Voice Actor, a Comedian with the Name Otto Waalkes. And I sae the Ice show with this huge Mushu Puppet 🥰🥰🥰
5:14 My family and I went there during our first trip to Disney World! The animator also gave us a hand-drawn picture of Mickey at the end of the show! My mom had it framed after we returned home from that trip. We still have it. It's definitely one of my favorite memories with my family at Disney. ❤ My mom wanted to be a Disney animator, but she continued to be an artist in her lifetime. She recently passed away, but she lives on in her work and art. ❤
They technically justified Mushu as a fire breathing dragon as he's technically an incense burner. He says he has powers and an original form bigger than khan the horse so it's very likely mushu was a traditional dragon with elemental gifts, until he led Fa Deng to disaster and was severely demoted with his only function to light incense and wake up the ancestors with the gong. He is shown to be non proficient in his own fire magic and seems to wing it purely on smoke and mirrors but does prove to be indestructible as he's been in several situations that would've unalived any actual living thing. I guess people didn't pick up on that originally.
I never really liked Mushu, so I'll be honest I was happy to learn he wouldn't be in the live action movie. I wish we'd had more Sisu in the parks though
I remember back in 1998 we were in MGM and My family asked me if I wanted to go through the animation tour or watch the fireworks. I very adamantly chose the tour and I hold it as one of the best decisions I've ever made. I was 8 years old but I still remember very clearly getting to see the storyboards before the movie and then how excited I was when I saw those scenes on the big screen later that year. As an animation lover it's one of my favorite memories.
One time I met Mushu and he noticed my shirt it was Reptar from Rugrats and his character attendant was like "Mushu, isn't that your cousin?" And he nodded so that's canon I guess haha
Hey Dan, I saw one of your videos on Instagram which features an articulated Judy Hopps from Zootopia. Hope this version of the costumed character comes to America.
It was really interesting to learn about Chinese culture, I never knew how inaccurate and apparently offensive Mushu is. BTW, it would be awesome if you could do a Snuffleulapugas or White rabbit costume evolution.
Man what a day, first Moana 2 was announced and now Disney Dan Posted a new costume evolution.
I hope the sequel does well. Moana deserves it. If and when you see her at one of the parks, wish her good luck for me!
Wait really?!😮
And a Knuckles series has came
(I know it's not related to Disney)
@@jbsMUWcreations2089is it out now

I can still see an alternate timeline where Mulan 2020 DID have Mushu and was voiced by Ken Jeong.
Aye snuck in some footage of brian hull lol but thats awesome! But who knew Mushu had a interesting evolution. Love that Great Wall of Mushu
Here is a Fun Fact:

Btw this comment is just a fun fact, it is VERY common to say “Year of the Dragon” although just keep in mind there is a BIG difference between the Western dragon and the Chinese dragon.
According to a former Disney character performer, Mushu’s head is VERY heavy. Maybe that explains why he’s not used much.
Please do a Disney Parks evolution video on The Lion King and its characters at the Disney Parks to celebrate the movie’s 30th anniversary this year!
I did my college program at magic of Disney animation and talked to Mushu ad nauseam each day. I wish I had a video of my Mushu show.
Fun fact: That Turkey sidekick for Pocahontas was originally voiced by John Candy and the animals were originally meant to talk.
As a kid I was always more excited about the extras than the movie💀 the movie was an obstacle to achieve extra
Someone put this into words! 😃
Wild that even after Mushu being culturally inaccurate they were still like "Jake Long should breathe fire too"
I think that's different because Jake Long isn't just Chinese, he's Chinese American, which is why he's the _American_ dragon. So, it makes sense that his dragon design and abilities are more American-esc.
Mushu over Figment, Elliot, Stuffy, Jake, Sisu, and Maleficent well make sense.
Also Madame Mim.
You missed out the Disneyland Paris mulan acrobat show that featured mushu. That costume was very weird for a Disney park.
You’re totally right.
I love the cartoon Mushu used for Disney parks today.
Mushu's absence in the shite remake wasn't the only reason it sucked, at least IMHO
It’s more or less worse than how he’s characterized in Mulan II
The Mulan Parade is a Core Memory event for me. I got to sit right on the curb, and one of the street performers came up to me & gave me a nice paper fan. I still have it.
I was mulan for Halloween one year as a kid. I bought my Mushu plush at a kiosk outside the mgm theater. I was obsessed with the movie.
2:01 oh Look its Brian Hull! 😍😍😍😍😀😀😀
Yup it seems like the overseas Disney parks, particularly the Asian ones, get ALL the character love.
A little crumbly in his nose holes....I can't get that out of my mind now...😂

In next video, evolution of Tarzan (1999) in Disney Parks soon? 25th years anniversary!!!
Not all DVDs are extinct, they're still around today.
Hehehe "tail diaper" 🤣🤣🤣💀
That and crumbly in his nose holes...😂

Evolution of animal... please
MUSHU TIME!!!!
Happy New Year, Disney Dan. I'm forgot to tell you. This year, we will celebrate Dr. Seuss's 120th Anniversary.
I really appreciate how you went over the cultural context of dragons in China! Especially the association of dragons and fire mostly being a European thing. Perfect 👍 for Chinese new year 🧧! 🐉
And the year of the dragon!
The irony with the phoenix in the Mulan live-action remake was that it used the absolutely wrong mythos for the phoenix. It would've been a lot safer to make Mushu a cute, marketable water dragon and eat the imperial controversy since that's at least Chinese instead of Western.
Dan has brought honor to RUclips?
I wonder if Dan’s being pushed down by the algorithm. I didn’t see this even though I have push notifications on.
One of my favorite sidekicks
I miss that animation building in Hollywood Studios. 😢 Stupid Star Wars meet and greet.😡
Awesome video!!! Mushu is 100% a Disney Icon :)
The dvd extras of Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is my Roman Empire honestly but my birth year has a 19 at the start
Figment is an American dragon. Does he breathe fire? No.
Mushu is so iconic! I can't think of 'Mulan' without him.
Yes! Dragon time!!!❤
There's more phineas and ferb costumes?.
Hello!!!!
Mushu is my favorite character in Mulan! I haven't seen him in the parks since 2003!
Mushu is my favorite Disney Dragon along with Figment.
❤❤❤❤i love disney Dann
I don’t care if he’s inaccurate I like Mushu, voice actor is off but still doesn’t bother me.
I just like a Dragon companion. Xp
Also the Mushu art on the left in your thumbnail where did you find that? =o
I love what you do
#disneydanisthebest ❤ ❤ ❤
I loved the Mushu show at Hollywood Studios.
"What does Cher have to do with you being a dragon?"
I love that @brianhullsvoice is in the video

How come they don't do the Lunar New Year event at Disney World? They could do it at Ecopt or something...
Love the review, but kinda sad you didn't mention the Mulan show that played at Disneyland Paris for quite a while.
I saw the Show with the animated Mushu and a "Animatior" explaining how these movies are made in Disneyland Paris in the early 2000s. My first in Disneyland ever and since. Hey Disney Dan I know it's not Disney related but could you possibly do a Snoopy mascot history That would be great
When is Moana 2 movie (2024)?
November 27, 2024
5:14 My family and I went there during our first trip to Disney World! The animator also gave us a hand-drawn picture of Mickey at the end of the show! My mom wanted to be a Disney animator, but she continued to be an artist in her lifetime. She recently passed away, but she lives on in her work and art. ❤
Wow, Moana 2 was announced and a new video from a longtime Disney and popular culture fan, Disney Dan came out.
And the Mushu Dragon dance float could be a reference to how the Great Wall of China is a sleeping dragon.
They technically justified Mushu as a fire breathing dragon as he's technically an incense burner. The “mushu on ice” reminds me of the sea serpent from the original Submarine Voyage at Disneyland
The drawing class at DCA has turned out to be my favorite thing, I wish I’d gotten to do the tour at MGM
Well, first Dwane announcing live action Moana, then Moana 2, then video
I remember the drawing mushsu show. I LOVED it.
First lol can’t wait to watch this!
would love a figment vs mushu lunar new year event XD

Need to catch up on buying more dvds for the extras
Can you do the evolution of Bucky please?
It was really interesting to learn about Chinese culture, I never knew how inaccurate and apparently offensive Mushu is. BTW, it would be awesome if you could do a Snuffleulapugas or White rabbit costume evolution.
Keep it coming!! If I was you I'd try using S M Zeus.
