No, you're not understanding the process correctly. It's not about the survival of the eggs but the fertilisation of the eggs. As the male in in control of fertilisation (which occurs within his brood pouch), unfertilised eggs (such as the ones found in the study) are either the result of not enough sperm, or the male choosing not to fertilise eggs for some particulat reason. We already know that females do this with sperm selection in many species, so why not males?
The title is kind of misleading. This phenomenon happens with a lot of female pregnancies in the animal kingdom as well. For example birds will eat the eggs they lay if there is a lack of food.
Sophie, you are confused. As stated in the description, these researchers are claiming that the males "selective abort EMBRYOS." The embryo stage occurs after fertilization. At no point in the video or in their paper do they claim that the selection occurs pre-fertilization. Sophie, learn how to read and pay attention, watch the video again, and stop making stuff up.
They’re studying this in a controlled environment. Who’s to say if they do that in nature as well, being that they have more of a choice on who they mate with in nature. Have they found this happens in a natural environment as well?
@regemo Hi there!! I am writing to you because you seem knowledgeable about this study. Forgive me for bothering you but I've been trying to search for a study that tells WHY nature sought it so that in majority of species, there is a sexuality separation. What was it that led to the requirement of males and females rather than a single sex? Would you know where i should look for it? (on the internet only please). Thank you so much for ANY help!!
@vegeteriancannibal I remember an argument that gender might have arisen from the necessity for some species to carry the undeveloped young until they are born, as opposed to just laying eggs. Carrying the young around meant the animal was less proficient at hunting for food and less able to defend itself from predators. Having a mate that does not become pregnant increased their survival and were better able to pass on their genes. Leading to more gender specific members of that species.
This can be seen in human animals too. Ideally a parent, regardless of gender, would nurture, take care of and protect their offspring, but environmental and hereditary circumstances doesn't always make that possible, and the parent ends up feeding off of, and depending on the child for sustenance instead. When we experience lack of any kind we tend to reach for whatever is closest to satisfy ourselves.
What do u mean the old fashion way.it still the same way God made it. The animals are different from us but do u think the males can protect the eggs better the the female seahorses.
Because the female sea horse has the eggs and the male sea horse has the sperm. Except the female puts her eggs in his outer pouch to fertilize with his sperm and he incubates the eggs until they're born.
@regemo Thank you so much, English is not my first language so I was struggling for the right phrase to Google. ''Origin of gender'', so obvious. I feel stupid right now, hehe!!
The theory of Evolution is still just a "theory" and cannot be proven via the scientific method in a lab, friends! Nothing built on a false premise leads to any truth at all. Maybe try to look at things from the bigger picture. Did the seahorse evolve or was it designed?
The music at the start of the video is as mystical as those beautiful creatures
Hey that's my professor narrating. Sad you don't give him credit. Adam Jones
Also, first author is Kimberly Paczolt, which shows in the article link in the description.
Shoutout to Adam Jones

True but why why do the males give birth why what was God and evolution think what where they smoking
@@piglin469 females give birth in every species. Let the females be free from childbirth in atleast one species.
@@debolinachatterjee1726 HMMMMM okay mate
@ariseb Its the melody played when Bella finds the enchanted rose in the beauty and the beast

ok

I want to know the song! Have been searching for such a long time! This reminds me of Belle and the Beast from Disney but I know It's different

So...people know what constitutes "attractive" to the Pipefish?
Zeph
well yeah its pretty ovious. the pipefish only father the females they like

I dont know but If you asked why no asexual reproduction then its a clone so basically no evolution
@@piglin469 that is what I was asking and yes, that makes sense. Thanks!

you could repply to them
It's Saint Saens, from Carnival of the Animals, entitled Aquarium, appropriately enough.
What's up with the Beauty and the Beast music?
Sensing some feminist undertones in this

Well deal with it
But how do you know they are the male
Jose Carlos because they are scientist I think you just want females the have the babies because it's pretty obvious that they can figure it out
Because the female sea horse has the eggs and the male sea horse has the sperm. Except the female puts her eggs in his outer pouch to fertilize with his sperm and he incubates the eggs until they're born.
Because of DNA and chromosomes that differentiate between male and female. Duh.
Because of sex cells even if the woman has penis like thing she still has ovarys and eggs
not the dark side its the the smart side an, good video
They talked about their study on pipefish.. not seahorses. Don't seahorses mate for life?
yes
