This is so adorable. You can see it didn't feel threatened but playful and curious. I totally adore parrots and hope one time I'll experience a similar moment too. Birds are amazing.
They have brains for sure! These birds have high function problem solving ability - and as the parrot with the most time on its hands - they spend the least time of any bird, I believe, any parrot anyway, eating - they spend most of the day looking for "entertainment". If you live near a flock and interact on a daily basis with them they are a constant amazement - thugs and thieves with a sense of humour that is totally disarming. Each one is an individual tho - just because they hang out in a flock when they choose doesn't mean they all react the same way to the same stimulus - each bird works things out for itself. They love watching human reaction, esp as a flock tho, to our reaction to thier destruction! They have a play call, and when, sometimes hours later after thier "work" is done and you arrive to witness it - the flock, sitting entirely beyond your reach, will make that call at you. A very cunning and a very humerous species - given evolutionary time I'm sure they will become banksters or mafiosi! Everyone loves them.
They're incredibly intelligent and often foil scientists' attempts to test their problem-solving ability. They discover ways of breaking the testing apparatus.
This guy clearly has experience with parrots, since you can see he doesn't yelp or make a fuss when the kea is nibbling at him. Giving a big reaction has the potential to encourage the parrot to inflict actual pain. Meanwhile my dad and my pet cockatiel are another issue.
@@AmongUs-mb4qx Yes, they are predators. They will kill baby birds (and even dig them out of nest burrows. Farmers used to shoot them because they would fly down onto the backs of sheep, rip open the back to get att he fatty tissue which they would eat. Leaving the sheep maimed.
Kea's are the most intelligent birds in the world. Incredibly inquisitive. I remember playing with three Kea's in possibly the same carpark as the one here. Are they thieves? Hardly.

lmao the comments in this section; no it is not trying to take his fucking finger off, they're born to be playful and outrageously curious towards things they think is out of the ordinary. Keas are the most intelligent in the parrot column, but also the most cheekiest and destructive, but no, they have no goddamn interest in "taking a living person's body part off", where's the fun for them in that?
This is exactly what they are like - fearless, funny and full of personality! Don't let them the opportunity to "work" on your car tho - they can visit total destruction on the rubber seals around the front window of your vehicle! Totally protected species of course, so no retribution allowed! Much loved birds but be prepared with nets to protect your car while you walk the tracks and leave your vehicle behind!
Ow wow, it’s nice seeing these old videos of my countries birds, due to the lack of living kea the ones that are alive through micro natural selection went brighten green in colour and got bigger/wider
@@BullshitTeam I’ve seen one in person though multiple times, I am literally at the irl source of these birds and I’ve seen them myself.they may have possibly gotten shorter but they’re wider and fatter now
If you want to touch a bird or have him jump up on you, you never move your hand around like that above him. You touch his bec, on the side of it, then then neck and scratch. And when he tries to ''bite'', which is a cuddly play, don't make those sudden movements or withdraw. Let him touch your hand with his bec - he nwon't bite hard. Put your hand under his stomach and he can climb up. Speak with him a lot with a light, nice voice.
The sheep attack part has been proven to be untrue, I can't remember what video/documentary I was watching, but some people were able to prove that Keas cannot eat sheep flesh and are not attacking sheep. They definitely attack cars tho!
@@pandap4ntz Well that documentary proving kea don't kill sheep was woefully inadequate and incorrect. There are films of them in action doing it. Those cute birdies will land on a sheep, riding it like a jockey, and drive their beaks into their kidneys, and eat the fat while the sheep is alive. They have been filmed puling rare seabird chicks out of their burrows and killing and eating them. For many years there was a bounty paid on them due to their sheep killing efforts. They would often kill many at a time, the riding and a playful peck in the kidney area might just cause superficial wounds, but the infection killed the sheep. It is likely many kea didn't indulge in this behaviour. Some sheep station owners paid much higher bounty on some individual birds, the ringleaders, a trait reflected in their vehicle destruction games, one or 2 are real problem birds. They get trained by tourists playing with them.
they are the GOOFIEST jokers! But be careful because they'll absolutely rip up your vehicle, I've seen them strip windshield wipers, pull up the seams, ruin door handles, even damage tyres. They're AMAZING. I love them so much
You are lucky the bird didn't take your finger off, steal your wallet then dismantle the car. Awesome birds. I had one land on my head once at Nga Manu.
