I feel bad for the cabbie.
I used to get my phone out all the time until i started watching Mikeys videos. I didn't realise how bad it actually is.
Still get tempted now but I think to myself "dont, mikey could be watching" even when im on the m25. You're a legend mikey thank you.

@CyclingMikey Mike? Why do you do this? We're at the eve of driverless cars, you're pulling up on stopped cars who are no danger to anyone, and you're creating a danger on the road for other users. You don't notice this of course, because you have your eyes and ears stuffed up these guys assholes, but you are a serious hazard on the road... I can tell you, (although I've only watched 2 of your grassy little vids) that you're helping no one, but distracting everyone, angering drivers who will no longer be concentrating on the road, (you know? When the car COULD actually hurt someone)...
I guess you have a story to tell, I hope you don't if I'm honest, I don't want to be a downer if you do. But I don't see, how approaching vehicles when stopped, peering through the window and making people feel violated and possibly intimidated, is a valuable addition to society.
      There are better ways.

    • @CyclingMikey
      @CyclingMikey  Год назад +2

Stationary phone drivers are still dangerous for many reasons:
      1) The people using their phones when stationary are often the same people using them when moving. Being caught whilst stationary is a co-incidence, not a defence. It's easier for me to catch them when stopped, but so many were also seen using their phones when moving.
      2) They are entirely unaware of people crossing the road around them. See here where a phone driver almost hits someone in the queue
      twitter.com/phonekills/status/1491526464520560641?s=20
See this other tweet where a 5 year old child is almost hit by a phone driver who was stationary:
      x.com/cmdkenyon/status/1724483042046067052?s=20
      3) They are entirely unaware of filtering cyclists and motorcyclists, despite the Highway Code requiring us to be aware of this.
      4) Phone distraction lasts for a good time after you put the phone away. Even if you're only using the phone in each traffic queue at each junction (which is highly unlikely), then you're constantly topping up your mental distraction and are basically as disabled as a drunk driver.
      5) Phone driving is worse than drink driving for distraction rates, and that's why it's part of the #Fatal4 behaviours that police target heavily.
      6) Here's a police officer telling you that he has been on the scene for 3 fatal RTCs involving drivers who were stationary whilst using their phones, and then moved off and caused a collision: twitter.com/markandcharlie/status/1604073330751197184?s=20&t=uj8sgu7spu4cTyDqqqds2g
      7) Policing phone drivers will help them stop other traffic offences too - it's vanishingly rare that someone only breaks a single traffic law like mobile phone use.
I'm really not interested in this nonsense of "it's not dangerous when stationary, because it clearly is and it's clearly still very appropriate to catch these drivers.

I think if your going to report someone (black cabbie at the start) you should just tell them there and then and be honest about it. It’s unfair to say ‘I’ll think about it’ and then have them thinking they’ve been let off only to get an extra bill just before Christmas. Though it may be deserved I think honesty is the best policy and a more effective deterrent. Anyway, I do think your making London safer for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians alike, so I salute you!

Today I got my phone out as was getting back on the motorcycle in the supermarket car park and filmed someone in the queue for spaces on her phone and scrolling through and moving her car forward at the same time. First time I’ve done it. Got a good clear shot of her phone use and then I walked round and got a nice picture of the numberplate. She asked me what I was doing so I asked her what SHE was doing? Waiting for a space she said, ah but you were doing else as well weren’t you ?
She got my drift and I said I could report it to the police, which could mean a £200 fine six points. She said, let’s hope you don’t.
But I did. When I got home, I thought there’s no regret, no apologies. If she’s that handy to grab her phone in that situation, she’ll be doing it everywhere else as well. So I don’t have regrets, it may come back NFA. Which will be a disappointment as it’s not a quick easy process in Sussex. But you never know. And as I’ve nearly been demolished by a car driver using a phone , when on my motorcycle, I’ve got skin in the game

I don't wish to make any excuses for these people breaking the law, but the fact you can catch so many people in a short period of time shows this is a systemic issue, not necessarily just selfish individual behaviour. If you combine the boredom and frustration of traffic with devices designed to be as addictive as possible, plus a very low chance of being caught, phone use is somewhat inevitable. The true solution therefore lies in regulating the technology, most likely the phones themselves. For example requiring them to lock if they detect being inside a moving vehicle and not mounted in a hands free set. My phone can tell me what music is playing in the background so surely it could detect engine noise plus the acceleration/deceleration of the vehicle.

If it is written in the law book, than drivers should obey the law.
"It's illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any device that can send or receive data, while driving or riding a motorcycle. This means you must not use a device in your hand for any reason, whether online or offline. For example, you must not text, make calls, take photos or videos, or browse the web."

I wonder if there is any correlation between vanity plates (often incorrectly called 'private plates, all plates are private!) and mobile phone use whilst driving. Be interesting to find out the percentage of vanity plates on our roads, and the percentage of drivers you have caught with vanity plates.

OMG. I'm pretty sure I've encountered the driver of the Range Rover. I saw her first because she was blocking traffic, unaware the light had changed and everyone in front of her had moved on. I then saw at lights a few hundred metres down the road, looking at her phone. I confronted her about and got a very similar reaction to the one here.
