Well they were at Turn 1-2 so exit turn 3 would be behind the barrier
The helmet is designed to protect against projectiles, but the actual forces that transduce to the brain are just protected by EPS foam. So, while people think bashing with a hammer or denting the helmet means something, the reality is that if you bashed a person on the head wearing this helmet with that sledge, once, they would still get significant brain damage. The greatest protection on a modern F1 helmet is the anchor points for the HANS device. The reality is drivers still die from direct hits (Jules Bianchi).
You know, this channel could actually teach something and be useful, but I'll I see is a guy wasting a $4000 helmet and calling it "science". Sorry parents, this is not education or science.

In fairness to the helmet (and more of a response to the "I'm surprised we got through it") you DID hit it with a sledgehammer, but you also hit it 9 times at full strength, I'd say that's impressive

The unfortunate thing is that, these helmets are tough, but they still wont save a life. As last year we lost Jules
They have saved multiple lives, think about Massa for example. Jules could have been wearing something built out of any material you like and he still wouldn't have survived due to the weirdness of his accident, it was avoidable.
4th death in F1 since Senna in 94 I say it's working pretty well so far, there's never a definite guarantee of survival only maximizing your chance if you didn't hit way too hard.

I worked as a safety inspector for five years for a racing series here in the US and I wish I'd had this video while I was working there. I don't know how many times we had to tell drivers that their helmets were not allowed in competition because they took a massive hit in a crash, this video shows why. It's also a perfect demonstration of "you get what you're paying for". A $3500 price tag is high, but that thing took 7 hits from a massive sledgehammer. I can't think of a single helmet in the 8858 regulations (this helmet is rated per 8860 regulations) that would have withstood that many hits.

Helmets are rated for ONE impact. MUST be junked after one hit. So, this held up amazingly.
Thanks for your video... was interesting to see just how tough those helmets are. I knew they would be, but you just wonder how tough... Hell of a sacrifice! Personally I would have wanted to keep it...

The Spring accident was between Rubens Barichello ( BrawnGP ) & Victim - Felipe Massa ( Scuderia Marlboro Ferrari ) 2009 : Grand Prix of Hungary : A Little spring of the suspension of Barrichello was flying out of hes car and hit Felipe Massa just when he reached a topspeed of 346 KM/H . Massa was brought to the hospital after he lost almoast hes life he got revived and joined back in 2010

die hard actual formula driver and that is a proper f1 helmet. It's a Bell HP7 and its what about half of the field wears. Its just not painted and doesn't have a visor protector or wing
Its a bell RS7 Carbon, and F1 Drivers like Ocon, Hamilton, and Alonso use the HP7

There's nothing inside a spoiler, police car siren is smaller than you think and is just mostly wiring and a circuit board.

Just as a reminder, helmets are only a one time use system. One hit and that’s it, whether it’s dropping the helmet from a shelf to the concrete floor or crashing into the dirt going 100. If the hit was miner send it back to the company and have them check.

fun fact the visor is actually bullet proof now since massas accident, and the drivers can change their helmets as much as they want to each race as long as the Base concept/ or design is Relatively similar to the previous race, they just can't change the whole entire helmet design all together

Even though the FIA made a helmet design rule, drivers still tweek the design a bit for different races and for some races the FIA relaxes the rule like for monaco (f1's most popular race). The whole reason the rule exists is so the drivers remain recognizable for the casual fans.
The only thing going through my mind is how I wish I had the disposable income to buy a F1 helmet... Much less destroy one lol

That is such an expensive helmet! I paid just under 3k for my Carbon full face helmet for road coarse racing but that was a couple years ago but not BELL brand which would of cost quite a bit more

Plot Twist: Inside F1 Helmet is actually massive balls of steel and that's pretty much all about it.
Interestingly enough when Motorcycle helmets are being tested for their DOT certification (What makes them legal in the US) to make sure they are structurally sound and safe they only test the top of the helmet. So naturally the companies make that the toughest spot even though in a motorcycle crash theres only a 0.4% chance that youll actually fall and land on the direct top of your head.. Interesting how thats the only part they test yeah?
(I have no idea what the standards are for Formula 1 racing helmets or if they even have to be DOT approved. My comment is strickly about DOT certified motorcycle helmets)
