Thanks for this resource Thorn, I agree that it’s needed. I love how you listed the Vivienne Crowley Wicca book and Currott’s Witchcrafting which have been 2 of my favourite books over the years as well, and I so want to check out Besom, Stang and Sword. Great video 👊
Just ordered the hardcover of Witch Crafting 💗 so nice to get recommendations of books that aren't full of "fluff" or "frivolous" content. Thanks again! 🤗
I came over from Messy Magic's new channel and was so happy she recommended you. Such an excellent point I never considered, the books that are most often recommended are antiquated (in my opinion). Thanks for these suggestions, I am excited to dive in.
Thank you!!!! Been looking for a list of good beginner books recommended by someone who has education, and long-time experience within witchcraft for ages!
Hello Thorn. This video I my introduction to you and I found it so familiar and comforting that I am sure I will watch many more (once I'm done looking for those books and yours).
It is always so good to hear from you. I gave the book by Thea Sabin for my daughters 2 yrs ago but it turns out that I ended up reading it more than they did. The one by John Beckett sounds like it could have been written for someone just like me. Thank you
I met her a few times. :) I used to occasionally go to her store when I live at a nearby town. I love her store. First Esbat I ever attended was at her store.
Thanks for mentioning Ann Moura. She has a Green Witch's Grimoire and a book on magic, independent of religion. Wish I could find her trilogy that's a course,in my house.
I've been into it for a long time since late 90's and I ran into a great book with alot of knowledge and information in it, I wasn't gonna get it but it got me lol... Anything you want to know is in this book. Its called how to become a witch The path of nature, spirit, & magic by Amber K & Azrael Arynn k. Yes and it does have alot of history in it.
Thanks for this video! Your cat is lovely! I've got a tuxedo cat as well! I have loads of books on Wicca & Witchcraft so when I've read them I'll buy some of these! I also enjoy books by the Farrars, Patricia Crowther and Doreen Valiente and I am currently practicing Wicca with the book Wicca A Year And A Day by Timothy Roderick which I enjoy very much. I'll also buy your book when I get paid!
Wonderful list! I really enjoy John Beckett's articles. I will definitely be checking out his book and the Deborah Lipp book as well. Thank you for the time you put into researching these. 💜😊
Beckett is great; I’m looking to forward to his second book. I think he’s got a good dose of earthly practicality that a lot of pagan authors are missing.
Thanks! Sometimes I ask myself if Wicca evolved to be children’s books... you know? Those hardcover books you’re talking about...Just full of beautiful images and nothing of content. Don’t get me wrong, I do love beautiful images, but I believe that when the book is good, the images contained in it serves to illustrate and not to support it, as it happens with several books of witchcraft or wicca that have been written in the last few years. I have been a student and a practitioner for more than 20 years now, and what I realize is that nowadays everything goes much more around sales than any other aspect. Not that it wasn’t so in the 90's, but at least the authors put more content in the works. Today witch related books are beautiful than anything else, which reminds me of my childhood books ... and I still do not understand why there are no more in-depth books, why the market keeps turning around books and series for beginners ... Anyhow, thanks for the tips.
I like the video's thumbnail. "Books for absolute beginners that don't suck." Do you have a different book list for beginners that do suck? And what criteria do you have for beginners to say whether they suck or not? Just kidding. Actually, I've read most of the books on your list. It is a good selection.
Love that you recommended Wicca for Beginners. That’s actually my favorite beginner book. In my opinion, Crowley is great for the the analytical minded and actually made me give Wicca a second chance after Cunningham left a bad taste in my mouth (although he’s now one of my favorites). I’m not super intellectual, but I was very deep in atheistic beliefs but the idea of Wicca or something like it kept subconsciously gnawing at me so Vivianne Crowley was a great entry way if that makes any since. I recommend her to skeptical people who are on the fence about delving into Wicca and the metaphysical. Nice list!
Oh, thankyou so much for these recommendations, so much info out there it's hard for someone like myself just waking up to some of this to navigate. Much gratitude
I picked up the Thea Sabin book after watching this & after years of rejecting Wicca for one reason or another I am finding that it is speaking to me in a way I didn't know I needed. I, like so many others, have tried time and again to come at witchcraft from literally every other possible angle and I wish I hadn't been so influenced by certain people in the community and stubborn in my refusal of Wicca. Or maybe this is exactly how I was meant to find it. It makes me wonder if we will see a resurgence of Wicca. I can't be the only one avoiding it only to find it was exactly what I needed.
One of my cats was meowing along with Oliver. I think she has a crush. XD (Also, thank for you for the comment explicitly separating the practice of magic from religiousity. I have a very atheistic/agnostic practice and it can get a little frustrating trying to explain that to some people).
i very much agree with you its about nowadays the same beginners books being Adventist and some are great but there also not a beginner book with me. i wasn't taught by a book i was taught in the kitchen and being out around with nature ive been a witch for 16 years now and im 28 now. i studied also in the libraries because when i was in school we never had computers to use and instead i went to the library to read and read books of history and religion. i love your videos . also i dont call myself pagan or Wicca i call myself a witch
Phyllis curott book of shadows is a loose book on how she found the craft in sort of a story form. It is my favourite book and it makes me feel so happy when I am a bit lost. X
Fantastic list! I am coming back to a practice after about 20 year absence so this is super helpful! Enjoy all your book videos, perspective and humour!
I bought two white magick books in the nineties in French but it was just rituals with a big consumerist slant. You had to have that much crystals, that much plants that you harvested under a full moon, exotic plants, colored candles. Nothing about intentions. Nothing about incorporating your creativity, your artistic input, your crochet into your practice. Now, that I'm rediscovering witchcraft through youtubers, I discover that intentions without any instruments is way more efficient than accessories without intention. Plus, I had archeology and religious history class at Uni. So, sometimes people who claim that a practice is ancient when I'm pretty sure it makes no sense to claim that with the archeologic evidences we have for exemple for the Celts, it makes me lightly chuckle. I think I seek books with intellectual honesty. If they invent a ritual it is fine but no need to say we owe it to Thot.
Interesting list of contemporary resources. I’ve found ‘Folk Witchcraft: a Guide to Lore, Land, and the Familiar Spirit for the Solitary Practitioner’ by Roger J Horne, a slim book, intelligently written. Admittedly it does follow a darker path, but the text and bibliography cite solid, historical source material.
I like to add a suggestion if you know any christopagans or christian witches or are interested in how these two groups can even exist than i would recommend the path of a christian witch by Adelina St Clair. its is very intesting and easy to read also it doesn't talk about spells till the very last chapter
Mary Amaryllis On the practice of witchcraft, the person has left Christianity. Christians, by definition, cannot be witches. The same applies to paganism.
The last two books seem really interesting, I'm more interested in Hellenic beliefs but I'd still get the Path of Paganism because I'm down for reading what that author says.

Hi Thorn I liked your video and the V8 purring of oliver the cat, I got a couple of books today and as a beginner it's not easy what to buy so I picked up "Living Wicca" by scott cunningham and "Wicca Made Easy", by Phyllis Curott I havent really started reading them yet but I'm hoping that I've bought some decent reads.
Hi I’m new to the craft and having trouble knowing if I am Wiccan or pagan I feel connected and drawn to both and I was wondering if it was possible to combine the two and make it my own , please help and only nice comments please I’m very confused

Iv tried to convince myself of gods and goddesses as actual people and I just can't. I'm part of a Coven and believe in male and female, polarities In everything but just can't believe in beings, it scares me and puts me off of doing magic because iv been brought up in Christian society and deep down have hang ups over it.
The earth, the sun, the ocean, and fire have power. You have power. Those who do not wish to summon gods or spirits may summon the power of the elements to cast spells and do divinations. Don't be discouraged, but know this, our religion was around way before the abrahamic religions. Your heart and spirit are free.
Same, for me it feels like a body memory from a time when spirits and others were meant to give me anxiety and to be kept away from. At the moment I find it easier to just work with energies while I undo the previous programming.
What books would you suggest for an academic wanting to use texts for a thesis? I'm working on reconstructionist and neo-pagan worship practices in cultural heritage sites in the UK. There is a ton of texts out there and trying to narrow it down is going to be a huge challenge, I'd love to have your insight.
Does anyone remember the book that was written as a series of letters between a seekers and their priestess? That had some beautiful inspiration in it and would be another great book for beginners. Not from a scholarly standpoint, but it gave me a deeper understanding of the spiritual side of Wicca, if that makes sense. After I read that book, I felt like something had changed in me that hadn’t happened with previous witchcraft books.
Thank you for this! I have a women’s studies degree with a focus in feminist theory from a really good university so I cannot sit through unsubstantial books lol. They just bore me and make me feel like I wasted my money
Hi Thorn! I love your channel! I'd like to know what you think about Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. I don't know if this is true, but someone was saying that there are a couple of mistakes regarding the correspondences of a plant? Do you recommend scott Cunningham?
I always hang on every word, very good. I've got a box of books from a car boot sale, just had a look and found the first book by Thea Sabin. I'm eclectic but I read everything. I also found: 'A Teaching Handbook for Wiccans & Pagans: Practical Guidance for Sharing Your Path' by Sabin Wicca Made Easy (2018) by Phyllis Curott The Love Spell: An Erotic Memoir of Spiritual Awakening (2005) by Phyllis Curott Elements Ritual. Air, Fire, Water & Earth in the Wiccan Circle by Deborah Lipp Do you have an opinion on any of these?
One of the best books I've ever read for my own practice is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Celtic Wisdom. I consider myself a Celtic Pagan and this book was chock full of info and really easily accessible. Couldn't recommend it enough to anyone starting on the Celtic path!
@@drawingKenaz I am actually curious about your opinion on some of the content of the book. Particularly chapter 2 "the roots of wicca" where Crowley states that Paleolithic people are speculated (although she implies this more as a fact than theory) to have worshiped a single god and goddess, and that pantheons came in the later age of agriculture. I would love to see a video on it. This seems to be a theory I've come across a lot in my research of wicca.
How about books for non wiccans. The world of witchcraft does not revolve around Wicca. It's a new religion. Some of us are more interested in the old ways.
Hi . I was wondering if you had a goodreads account account and if so maybe post the link in a video? I get alot of reading I spiration from you and would love to follow you on there if you have one.
Dana Decker No! I don’t. Not really one that I use anyway. :/ But I do reviews on Instagram a couple times a month, and you na enjoy that! @thornthewitch
This video got me when you mentioned the bad history in most of these 101 wicca books hahaha. Man, seriously, Scott Cunningham doesnt even mention from where the heek he get his information. One of his books he said most witches prefer orange and taby cats...I was like what? Thanks for the fantastic vid!
There are other videos on my channel that address this, but the truth is that even books that purport to be non-Wiccan usually include Wiccan structures, tools, and paradigms (Wicca emphasizes particular practices rather than beliefs, and these have become common-the use of a quartered circle and four elements, specific ceremonially-derived tools, a gendered pair of deities, etc). It’s pretty well intertwined, though increasingly people can’t recognize it.
LunAlis 610 Well, now that you mention it, this process for sure requires newcomers to do some legwork, use their brains, and experiment. Plenty of beginners expect things to just be handed to them. So yeah! The beginner can’t suck either!
@@drawingKenaz Yes, you definitely have a point! I've just started this journey and I'm still trying to decide which way to go with witchcraft. I just cant bring myself to believe whatever some youtuber says if they don't have any books to back them up.
Yeah a lot of beginner books are written like they are meant to be read by a 7th grader and not like a deep smart nonconformist 7th grader who is into philosophy and poetry, but like a 7th grader who's main interests are shopping and lipstick...
Rosalyn None of them! Read as much as you can! The more you read, the more you’ll see patterns and get a sense of what is true and meaningful. Always use your common sense, keep a skeptical mind, and have fun!

From the beginners series. I read the crystal on and the mention of Angel's really was a bit jarring when it came up a few times.
I mean ... I like the pictures and books that also looks pretty
Thank you. From a beginner.
I would like to thank you for recommending these books.
Can you do a video with your favourite Wiccan books that do not target beginners? I'd like something that isn't written for the absolute beginner.
Me too. And I will read Thorn's book.
I agree would love more books not for beginners.

You video cost me $200 lol! Wonderful channel!!!
Mission accomplished! 🤪 Thank you!
Do you also have any books that talk about astrology, divination, and shadow work?
I got so annoyed with the duotheism that Thea Sabin book that I wrote in the margins - something I never normally do
Yeah, it definitely has its problems. I actually don’t have an intro to Wicca book that I love. :/

Hi Thorn! I love your channel! I'd like to know what you think about Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. I don't know if this is true, but someone was saying that there are a couple of mistakes regarding the correspondences of a plant?
Do you recommend scott Cunningham?
That book is an excellent resource!
Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets drives me crazy - the agenda trumps scholarship and accuracy. Grrrr!
I always hang on every word, very good.
I've got a box of books from a car boot sale, just had a look and found the first book by Thea Sabin. I'm eclectic but I read everything. I also found:
'A Teaching Handbook for Wiccans & Pagans: Practical Guidance for Sharing Your Path' by Sabin
Wicca Made Easy (2018) by Phyllis Curott
The Love Spell: An Erotic Memoir of Spiritual Awakening (2005) by Phyllis Curott
Elements Ritual. Air, Fire, Water & Earth in the Wiccan Circle by Deborah Lipp
Do you have an opinion on any of these?
One of the best books I've ever read for my own practice is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Celtic Wisdom. I consider myself a Celtic Pagan and this book was chock full of info and really easily accessible. Couldn't recommend it enough to anyone starting on the Celtic path!
Also, I've no idea what an "Instagram book" is 😅

Wicca by Vivianne Crowley was actually first published in 1989. Not 1996. That might have just been your edition.
Must be! Thank you! It looks like it’s had a few incarnations.

I think Oliver likes Phyllis Currot, too...
Fiction book sweep series by Cate tierman
How about books for non wiccans. The world of witchcraft does not revolve around Wicca. It's a new religion. Some of us are more interested in the old ways.
Well, she is a Gardnerian Priestess lol. Ur comment is really awkward.
You shoulda set the cat down. It was hard to hear what you were saying after it jumped up on your shoulder.
Yeah, I know! 🙃 Sorry about that!
O I know you rarely ever really get a good book that has a lot of information about the God
Do you also know books, that cover ONLY Witchcraft without Wiccan beliefs in it?
There are other videos on my channel that address this, but the truth is that even books that purport to be non-Wiccan usually include Wiccan structures, tools, and paradigms (Wicca emphasizes particular practices rather than beliefs, and these have become common-the use of a quartered circle and four elements, specific ceremonially-derived tools, a gendered pair of deities, etc). It’s pretty well intertwined, though increasingly people can’t recognize it.
@@drawingKenaz ah ok thank you!
One book to avoid is Witta:An Irish Pagan Tradition
Why?
Haha my cat is a Siamese cat and his name is Oliver too! XD

There’s a great new book out called the frayed angels by Vickey Tunaley! Really worth a read! ruclips.net/video/mXK00Fj2UB8/видео.html
You are so beautiful, nice topic, give more information,
And any on cultural appropriation
So is this a video about books that don't suck or beginners that don't suck? 🤔😂 kidding!
This comment lmao.😭😭😭
Feed your cat OMG feed your cat
Seriously 5 minutes+ into video be actually recommending a book.
If u doing the witch craft you don’t know what ur doing it can turn back on u
I am new here and I am not clear on the books to avoid 😭
Rosalyn None of them! Read as much as you can! The more you read, the more you’ll see patterns and get a sense of what is true and meaningful. Always use your common sense, keep a skeptical mind, and have fun!
