    I’ve been working on my own setup having watched your videos with Phil. After experimenting I felt that my bike was comfortable but I could never seem to achieve a decent cadence (I put it down to just getting old and having back problems due to an injury). I had to work hard to pedal at 60 rpm. I’ve just dropped my crank length from 170 to 165 and it’s given me an extra 15 rpm instantly due to opening my hip angle.
    I can’t afford to pay someone like Phil for their expertise but the snippets of information I get from these videos have helped massively. Thanks Katie.

    Also a reminder: sometimes it's also good to train for bikeriding without the bike. Core stability is key and training it helps a lot getting comfortable on the bike. Same goes for yoga or stretching so it's easier to deal with the results of years of sitting. At least that's my issue. Now I need to stretch a lot and train to get rid off the bad posture from office work

    Great advice as always and some really helpful tips in terms of adjustment. As someone who rides 175mm cranks this is something I might consider changing in the future. Thank you Katie and Phil.

    Nice one Katie / Phil. I ended up going a size smaller frame than the manufacturer recommended based just on my height (5'10" - in decent shape and pretty flexible), and also in the end much preferred shorter cranks (165 vs 172 that came with the bike).
    With the M frame, 90mm stem, and seat quite far forward I still kept having the urge to use the tops; with the S frame, 100mm stem, and seat mid-mounted it feels really natural to just stay on the hoods - which seems a good indicator.
    Shorter cranks make keeping the flow/cadence much easier too.

    Phil is great. My Silex is adventure bike geom. But harder to adjust stem length as the one it comes with is short as standard so even just a 10cm shorter stem makes the steering a fair bit quicker. Just something to watch for. I put my cleats right back thanks to Phil and that really helped.

    I’m at the bottom end of the medium frame size on my Giant Defy and opted for a shorter stem. Better “fit” but I can see how that reduces the inherent stability. So far so good … I can’t ascribe that shortened stem length to my recent crash that broke my hand! Thanks Phil and Katie for an excellent video!

    when i was younger i used to measure seat height and saddle to handlebar distance. Nowadays i added center of front wheel to top of the handlebars. Helps you get the shoulders just right.

    Fork cut length advice is right on, Have a 2017 cx bike that was given me out sitting team storage some years to and was cx demo bike a few years ago. Fork is C legs/AL top fork came pre cut. The frame is right size is at end due between size, common for me, but the stem is at the top of fork which limits alot of options. Looking for a new fork now.

    Because my bike comes with an integrated. cockpit, I really only have one shot if I'm going to change my stem/bar setup. The standard setup is 110mm with 42 cm bars. It almost fits, as I have it set, but I find myself pulling my hands off the hoods to the tops because it's more comfortable to have them set a little closer together. As it's time to change bar tape, I thought I'd angle my hoods in during indoor trainer season to see if I'm going to like a 40cm bar before spending 700 pounds to change my bar.

    What does he suggest for short people besides a custom bike. A 80mm stem is usually the longest I can ride being 4'11.

  • @danwentcycling7952
    @danwentcycling7952 8 месяцев назад

    I always feel people overstate the importance of stem length to handling. I’ve had small frames/long stems and long frames/short stems and they’ve all been fine. Only notice differences for a bit, then you just adapt.

    Yeah some bike brands have different geometry's to the ones I'm used to. Have noticed I'm in between sizes in a few frames I'm interested in(very long legs/arms short torso). Get's a bit tricky when the frame size up has a top tube a little too long. And then the frame size down has a stack height a little too low. But both could be remedied by either adjusting stem length or stacking up the spacers. So what to do?! haha!

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  8 месяцев назад +1

      I’m the EXACT same!! Go with stack height and you can see I need to use an inline seat post and push saddle all the way forward ☺️☺️ hope it helps

    Do a fit before buying a bike, not after! I.e. compare geometry of bikes you've ridden in the past (good and bad ones) and compare reach, stack, ETT and ETT/Reach and Stack/Reach ratio. Only after that you can fine tune the right size once you've purchased the bike. Some brands just aren't best for one's proportions, too.

  • @Paul020
    @Paul020 8 месяцев назад +1

    Saddle position is relative to crank length, seat tube angle. Has nothing to do with adjusting for reach. Stem length and handlebar, (and virtual top tube length, and head tube length) generally influence reach.
    The explanations in the video were so simplified it was almost useless.
    Or did I miss the point as it was an advertisement for Mr. Burt's services ?

    Surely having that many spacers means it’s the wrong bike in the first place ?
    Winspace bikes are great and you are a super strong rider regardless of the bike you ride, but for perfect fit, as your bike fitter says, go for endurance geometry.

    Helpful for me, I'm one of the short leg, long torso freaks (5'11"/180cm tall, 29"/74cm legs) and putting those details in to some brands sizing calculators (Canyon for example, not that I can afford one!) says they don't make a bike that fits me.

      5’11 with a 28” inseam. Get on my level of short legs long torso. lol. If I had the correct legs for my torso length I’d of probably been 6’4 😂

    • @TheWoogeroo
      @TheWoogeroo 8 месяцев назад

      I don’t get it, just get a longer stem and you’re golden, easy to fit.
      Especially as most frames have a sloping top tone nowadays.

      @@alaefarmestatesllc We should start a club, it's not just the bikes, the clothing manufacturers seem to assume every cyclist has long legs and a short torso. Very few that make trousers for this time of year in different leg lengths, at least in the MTB/commuter stuff I've looked at so far. Apparently Rapha do offer different leg lengths though.

    Half the problem these days is manufacturers including 25mm setback seatposts. Like, why? I suffer from long legs, short reach syndrome and my fit requires a 0 offset seatpost to accomodate my saddles rails and I doubt the majority of people need 25mm setback seatposts too. Just my 2c
