Gotlandsrusset or horses that looks like them have been in Scandinavia for the last 2500 years, so Gotlandsruss was one of the breeds they took with them to Island. (small strong horses they could have on their boats). They are amazing horses, that you can use for many things. 🙂
What a cute pony! The mane, his trot 🤩 Definitely sounds like a great and versatile breed. And what a beautiful representative! I unfortunately have never met a Gotland pony before.
I've never seen a Gotland pony nor ever known about it. Thank you for bringing us these beautiful rare breeds. He's very lovely, and how nice that you got to drive him!
My favourite horse at the riding school as a child was a Gotlandsruss (Gotlands pony) He was such a nice, safe horse and healthy, he lived over 40 years. Lovely horses❤❤❤
You always make me smile every time you release a horse video, I truly love them all, On to Norway , hopefully one of the breeds will be one I own a few years ago --- The Fjord Horse , I must admit it was a handful as I was only a novice. Best wishes from the U/K.
I live on Gotland, and am quite familiar with these wonderful little horses. They are not endangered, fear not. The breed is properly called Gotland Russ, and we don’t call them ponies, despite their diminutive size. Even though their stature is small, they have the conformation of a larger, long legged horse, and are typically quite well proportioned. They make exceptional driving horses, as we’ve seen here, and in Summer you can watch adolescent drivers race them at the trotting track here in Visby. Gotland Russ are also excellent companion animals for other horses, and many equestrians keep one or two for that purpose. The wild herd in the forests in the middle of the island is very lightly managed, a new stallion is released every three years, and yearlings are selected and sold to eager families each May. Late April or May is a good time to walk in the forest preserve; if you are fortunate you’ll come across a number of Gotland Russ dams and their foals. Bay is definitely the predominant colour, but I have seen very pretty roans as well. They are great little animals, smart, tough and full of personality.
Also a swede here, we absolutly call them ponies, just because its not in the breed name doesnt make them not a pony They arent endangered, though they are a threatened (hotad) breed with around 6000 st in Sweden (less bad but still)
my brother had a Gotland when we were in our teens. Most loyal, affectionate and smart pony ever. Very well put together, but still a pony. Our neighbor lady, who was not quite 5 feet tall, was very taken with Little, yes, that was his name, and talked my brother into selling him to her. They were inseparable.
So, they ride them as well as, being trotters! Amazing strong ponies. As I get older, the idea of driving is becoming appealing. Lucky you to get that experience! Love all your videos 🥰
Ya know when I saw that brief clip preview I thought it was the Finnish Universal. I did not catch that he was very tiny for a Finnish Universal! What a little champ!
Very nice presentation of the Gotlandsruss! What a beautiful little stallion, so proudly trotting with the cart. Do you always pick stallions for your videos, btw?
I never met a Gotlandsruss, but as a child I read a Swedish book series where they had some Gotland ponies in their riding school. Now I finally really know what they look like, very beautiful horses 👍🐴.
They are not stubborn but intelligent. They need kindness and cooperation, something that was a bit bad in the past. Today, as family ponies, they are perfect, a bit mischievous and trusting.
I''m so jelaous that you're the right size to be able to ride all of the horsies x) I'm too long to ride gotlands and icelandic ponies =P there's a lot of icelandics where i am and they're just super sweet
These are so sweet! Reminded me of my own girl's harness from her racing days a little. Also thank you so much for the subtitles! I can manage without but I know some folks can't and I really appreciate them regardless.
@@katarinawikholm5873 I think I've already seen her ride the fjord? anyhow, scandinavia have variations of the cold blooded trotter, which looks a little different i norway vs sweden. but could be since it's still considered the same breed, maybe she'll end on that breed at the end of looking at all different breeds in scandinavia.
The Gotlandponny is actually used in ridning schools all over the country of Sweden and if you live in Sweden and ride horses, you most likely have meet one. They are very close to both mine and many others hearts as they are often, and for me are one of the first breeds you meet and ride.
Personaly i think they're to small to be ridden by adults, because they're even smaller than icelantic horses. But maybe because they're draft they're strong enough. But very nice for the cart. His tiny ears amazed me. And of course i never met, even never heard about this breed, that's the reason i follow your channel 🥰
I'm from Gotland and I grew up with Gotland Ponies. I've been bucked off by almost every single one I've ridden. To be honest they can be complete a**holes and if you let them they would run you over and not give a flying feck 😂😂😂. I've never met a more independent, strong willed and stubborn breed of horse and sometimes I just believe that they should be left alone to roam the forests 😅
Gotland ponies are very common in sweden and that's why it always confuses me that its endangered 😅 It's a very common breed for riding school but I've like only ridden on once since I have always been too tall My dad is from gotland so I've heard stories from him and been to the wild pasture a few times ❤️
When i was a child (35+y ago), we had a pony who was half Russ but i can't remember what was the other half. He's name was Jasperi and he came as stallion, later got gelding. My mom trained him for riding amd driving and my aunt took care of him. He's best friend was a German shepherd female called Diiva and they grew up together ❤ He looked exactly like the dark hair horse in the beginning and brought up so much memories. He never hurt me, even though i was crawling under his belly but he didn't allow my friend boy to come in his enclosure. One winter we went to a Christmas church with a sleigh with him. So lovely memories ❤❤ One of the best breeds i think 🙏
Reminds me of a pony we had years ago. He was created from a fence jumping Quarter horse / Appaloosa stallion with a Shetland Pony mare.(Reverse of Pony of the Americas). Don't ask me how the horses figured that pairing up. Very full thick flaxen mane & tail, golden chestnut, stocky, very smart, really strong, a great pony, 13.2 hands.
Can't wait for you coming to Germany. And I hope you will bring some time with you. Counting at least 30 different German breeds, this is going to be a long stay.
I know a lot of horse people and the vast majority are not financially wealthy. One popular saying goes "if you want to make a small fortune with horses you start with a large fortune."
@@shawntisdell Exactly....which is why I really admire Yvonne Horjus, of " Friesian Horses", who really began with a very small fortune! Contrary to public opinion, there is NOT a fortune to be made in horses.... Not everyone is lucky to own a famous racehorse, that Wins!! Lisa
I rode Gotland ponies as a child here in Sweden. They are fantastic with children - wonderful, versatile ponies with just the right temperament!
Gotland ponies have been a BIG part of my life and are 1 of my favorite breeds. But I had no idea that they were endangered (I live in Sweden)
what a gorgeous stallion!! almost looks like an in between of a haflinger and icelandic horse
I was thinking that, too!

Stubborn? Yes! Sweet? Yes, They will teach, you will learn!
I live on Gotland! So cool that you featured them. We like to visit the wild herd whenever we have time.
Prior to this I have only seen photos of the Gotland Pony. After seeing this video I’m in love!! ❤😁
He is absolutely beautiful - what a grand little equine!
As someone known these horses for a long time I really appreciate that you made a video about them
I've never seen a Gotland pony nor ever known about it. Thank you for bringing us these beautiful rare breeds. He's very lovely, and how nice that you got to drive him!
My 3rd, 4th, and 5th Gotlands are here with me, at home in California. After my first, I would never consider another breed.
A beautiful and versatile pony. It seems you really enjoyed the cart. Thanks for taking us to Sweden. 😊

Awww, thank you! I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. Yes - the Fjord episode will be coming soon! 🙂
How lovely to see him driven in an open bridle. It's a treat to see horses so confident and relaxed and happy.
A very nice pony, stout and good behavior. And he is still a stud! Such fun!
Yngve Frej is so sweet, what a beautiful Pony which a great personality.
Thank you so much for showing this gorgeous pony. I'm binge watching your back catalogue cos i love all horse and pony breeds! 🎉🐎
If you come to Sweden don’t ask for Gotland pony, the name is Gotlandsruss (Russ for short).
I love your videos. Keep going 😊.
Thank you! 🥰

Noted the lovely Gotland pony and his owner share the same sweet manner and thick blonde manes. A perfect pair.

Yeah, finally you get to the Norwegian breeds. Wonder what you will show of the Døl horses 😊
What beautiful animals! They look like they could be way back in the Halflinger breed foundation. So cute. Thank you!

I love gotlands! I am from Sweden myself. My dream is to own one to use for driving.
They are beautiful ponies
Very nice presentation of the Gotlandsruss! What a beautiful little stallion, so proudly trotting with the cart. Do you always pick stallions for your videos, btw?
It was a pregnant mare for the northswede horse
They are beautiful. If I wasn't 5' 10" Id have one x
I never met a Gotlandsruss, but as a child I read a Swedish book series where they had some Gotland ponies in their riding school. Now I finally really know what they look like, very beautiful horses 👍🐴.
Gotlands are cute they got that poofy mane and tail like Icelandics
I own and ride a Gotlandruss named Violet. We competed in a dressage show earlier this year.
What a perfect trotter! Love this guy!
They are not stubborn but intelligent. They need kindness and cooperation, something that was a bit bad in the past. Today, as family ponies, they are perfect, a bit mischievous and trusting.
This horse is so cute. I have an urge to put his bangs into a "pony tail!"
Russ is actually the local equivalent of the English ’horse’
- hruss vs horse

I have heard of these Ponies but I didn't know how endangered they are. He was very Adorable.
Have loved these little guys since they showed up on Star Stable Online. Love learning more about them.
When he trots it looks soo relaxed but it is actually very fast!

I'm Swedish and I've ridden a few when I was a kid. They're amazing little ponies.
Really great poney..
A Gotland Pony was the first horse I ever fell off lol
I wish! They do remind me of a palomino pony with an EXTRAVAGANT mane that I rode as a girl. Absolutely charming.
Hmmm I'm wondering if you'll end the whole of scandinavia with the cold blooded trotter then, because where is iiit??
Loved this episode though!

I used to take care of and ride one until he passed away at least 10 years ago. He was the best boy
There is one russ mare at the stable I go to.
I love that cute little trot ❤

It's more about size than age of course. They're usually ridden by very petite adults and children.
As a Swede this made me really proud

coldblooded trotter, finnish trotter, go for them
I thought we only had two breeds in Norway, the Fjord horse and the Døla horse? What are the other two?
Cold blooded trotter and lyngshest.
Alissa has been getting lots of different kinds of driving experience.

( or, did I miss that one?)
The little Russ Gotland is very sweet and so handy!
