Had one before, an almost completely black mare, save a star. Galloping with her was like sitting on the back of a stream-powered train. Once she had gained momentum, she'd not stop or slow down for anything! She was the kindest, sweetest horse you'd ever meet in the stable and a ferociously competitive spirit when in harness. Couldn't have her in tandem before anything because of it. Alone, no trouble. Once she passed, of old age, I didn't want another horse. Who could fill such a great gap in the heart anyway?

My dad told me that when he was a kid a local farmer in the Swedish archipelago would let the kids ride one of his North Swedes. He put two or three kids bareback on the horse and then off they went to fetch the hay from the field. The horse didn't mind the kids at all, but he loved water, so sometimes when he felt like it he abandoned the road and just walked into the lake beside the road, kids on his back and all. Farmer wasn't happy, kids and horse loved it. 😂

And in Finland we have the Finnhorse that is also a draft horse, used for the same things in the past and nowadays. There are 4 types: Draft type, trotter type, riding type and the small horse type which is larger pony size. Personally I think the North Swedish horses are more beautiful with their manes and forlocks but Finnhorses are also beautiful. The horse in my profile pic is a Finnhorse gelding around 153cm tall, maybe not that breed typical but still really nice❤ Finnhorses are very often chestnuts in different variations but can also be bay, black , palomino or gray😊 Nowasays a lot of them are bred for trot racing

I love the video! I'm Swedish, so it's fun to see someone learn about and appreciate our beautiful horses. My grandmother worked with this breed in the 1920s-30s on the family farm in Jämtland. She told me many stories before she passed away, and it's great to hear that some of the traditional work with the "Nordsvensk" is still being practised. ❤
Ps. I just wanted to mention that the English subtitles (and the Swedish) are incorrect. I can timestamp if you would like.

As a very jung child I started to drive the Nordsvensk horse bringing in hay from the fields and taking them out into the pastures for the night. They thought me to love horses. I moved to Spain and started my horsetrekking business and discovered many other breeds. I had Arabians, Spanish and Appaloosa became my favourite of them all.

Aw the good old ”nordsvensk” one of my favorite breed of horse from my country. They are so calm & laidback. I remember riding one of the taller variants in my teenyears when my class had a schooltrip to a resort in the northern part of sweden & 1 of the activities was horseriding & me who only ridden a few times in my childhood & then only on ponies got told to ride this (to me) giant of a horse, but bless that horse for his patience with me since I was not agile enough to get on him on my own, he just stod there waiting while I tried so many ways to climb up in the sadle. I remeber that time fondly, his whole demeanor just told you that he was steady & that you could trust him. Never felt so safe on a horse as I did with that one.

Thank you for introducing us to this wonderful breed! I have a friend here in the US who is from Sweden and grew up with these horses. she ended up getting a Canadian horse because the smaller traditional type of Canadian Horse reminded her so much of the North Swedish Horse in both looks and temperament. Which makes sense, both breeds evolved under similar conditions and use. And both breeds also suffered from crossbreeding with draft and other breeds and an effort was made to establish a studbook (in the case of the Canadian in the 1880s). As with the North Swedish Horse there is a diversity of types in the breed from shorter stockier animals to longer legged "sportier" ones.

I'm Swedish, and I love this breed. They're just so gentle and easygoing. And they also look like they're straight out of a fairytale.
Speaking of Swedish draft horses, there's a Swedish version of the ardenner horse that is basically like it's own breed. They're lovely too. Smaller than the original Belgians, and more agile. Highly recommended if you need a super chill working companion for heavy tasks, as well as an oversized "pony" for your kids to dote on... Also very pretty.
(I'm not really a horse person, but I do love draft horses.)

i have my own north swedisch horse, we live in the netherlands but I always wonderd why she didnt look like the typical north swedisch horse, but this video makes so much sense bc she is from the south of sweden she looks more like a riding horse!! thank you so much I love this breed so much and it makes me happy to see that more people get to know this beautiful breed!!!

Our beautiful swedish horsie! Love these horses, I hope we never let them get turned into something else and lose this precious breed liek we already almost did.
I read somewhere that this horse has a lot of similarities to the very first horse, looks wise at least it still remains similar. And that is also something that needs to be kept.

I have heard of these horses. I am a dog and horse trainer and I go around places training them and riding them. I have a ranch that I own and I have North Swedish Horses as one of the breeds I ride.

This is one of my favourite breeds. I'm Swedish, so I learned about them early on in life and loved them ever since. I've met a few and ridden a few and they are a really nice type of horse, mild mannered but still fun and can be quirky and stubborn if they chose. Would really like to have my own one day!

I'm a Swedish non-horse girl. I grew up in the countryside when I was a teenager and took the bus to and from school. And right by the bus stop was a pasture for this big old North Swede namned Hercules. In the spring he would lay in the sun while birds were pecking his winter coat off (for their nests) and he would look dead but was just really enjoying the warm sun. I would sometimes go up to the fence and call him and he would slowly saunter over, lift his head over the fence and put his entire face to me. His head was as big as my upper body. And then I would just stand there and hug him, and pet him, and talk to him - such a wonderful horse. Such a sweet, kind and lovely animal ❤️💕

What a beautiful small horse w/full mane & tail!. I love the compact size. These guys are probably the best for bareback; wide seat but nice gaits.
    Nice soothing music too.

I love how soft you are when riding. I kow it's a big horse, but you move so smoothly, with such soft hands. Any horse would be more than comfotable being riden by you!

Your saddle mare has a cross on her face! I should think that when Christianity came to Scandinavia, some found that kind of marking meaningful. What a lovely breed...so gentle and sweet. Thanks for sharing this part of your adventure!

I "met" the North Swedes (Sweeds?) at the first World Equestrian Games in Stockholm. They were well represented during the various exhibitions. Fell in love right on the spot. The horses presented were always well matched so it's fun to see the variation in size and color that exists. Thanks!
