Save for a couple of occasions in the seventies when the band briefly split, Mountain remained an integral and hugely important band within the mainstream of rock music. Formed in 1969 by the guitarist Leslie West and bassist/producer Felix Pappalardi, became one of the highest grossing rock acts on the music scene between the years 1969 and 1972.
One of the bands earliest gigs was at the legendary Woodstock Festival. Shortly afterwards Canadian drummer Corky Laing joined the band where he has remained ever since. Sadly, Felix Pappalardi died in 1983.
In 1985 the band - now featuring the line up of Leslie West, Corky Laing and British bassist Mark Clarke - promoted their recent album "Go For Your Life." More importantly they were asked to play as special guests on the Deep Purple European tour. The DVD that you now hold in your hands was filmed in front of a massive and hugely enthusiastic audience delighted by the band playing a set consisting of their finest moments - including "Nantucket Sleighride", "Never In My Life", "Mississippi Queen" and "Theme For An Imaginary Western".
This amazing performance captured by German Television's premier rockshow production team has rarely been seen until now. Hence another exclusive with the debut of the performance on DVD. So enjoy another Voiceprint special - the home of the best Rock Music rarities !

Amazing guitar player ! Rest in peace, Leslie West(1945-2020)
Fr, rip to a legend 🙏
Thats right and even though Mountain will never see the inside of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame it seems, that also makes them CULT HEROES. Add hard rock pioneers, heavy metal pioneers, & maybe the only 60s-70s rock group that never left the Blues... Here's the real algebra: Mountain = Legends
They need the R&RHOF like a fish needs a bicycle.
Screw them idiots.
Saw the original Mountain first at Woodstock, and then back in '72 at the Convention Center in Wildwood, NJ. Met Felix (R.I.P.) and Leslie on the boardwalk that day. Leslie was truly a "mountain". Always a great show.
Watching Corky in command of the sticks is the REAL Rock n Roll movie highlight reel!
A VERY hard hitting EXCITING drummer to watch. I got one word for ya, DUCK!!!
Tommy Aldridge clone
@@MrN75nokia you were there lover weren't ya
RIP Leslie! One of the Best!
April 17 1983.
R.I.P. Felix Pappalardi.
What a great song and guitarist. Rest In Peace, Leslie! You’re music will live on forever in the hearts of all your fans.
Saw these guys this same year in Tulsa, some kind of "Legends of Rock tour". That night was Savoy Brown, Iron Butterfly, Mountain, and Grand Funk Railroad. Leslie blew the roof off that place!
One & Οnly Mr. Leslie West!!! RIP.
I agree with a lot of these viewers talking about Leslie kinda phoning it in here, but listen to him now in 2017 he is playing and singing as good as ever.Monster tone never duplicated.
West Bruce and Laing was formed by Felix Pappalardi. Felix's ear, the one that faced Leslie's amp was going deaf and the Doc told him he would lose his hearing if he didn't lay off for about two years. So because of his producing Cream and his association with Jack Bruce as a result, he formed WBL which ROCKED but were ahead of their time and called it quits after a couple LP's but just absolutely fuckin' brilliant music. Actually, they were heavier than any other type of rock in that period.
Such an underrated band. These guys were bad ass AF!
I got to see Mountain and West, Bruce and Laing, both at the Hollywood Palladium (But not on the same night...) in the early 70s. Sierra Hotel Rock n Roll.
I saw West, Bruce & Laing on April 28, 1972 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. Fleetwood Mac and Spirit opened up. $6.50. First time Jack was back in the big arenas since 68. I think Fleetwood Mac had Danny Kirwan & Bob Weston on guitars. Spirit was incredible with Jay Ferguson and the amazing Ed Cassidy on drums. They came through Philly again in December of the same year.
saw GF in 70 and my ears are still ringing; loudest band EVER and that took alot louder than THE WHO, DEEP PURPLE or a few other 140 decibel bands from the day!
That fucking one riff tho. Heavy as fuck for its time.
Hendrix loved it hat riff ...he was next door in his own studio when he heard that riff he stopped what he was doing and went next door and told Leslie it is one of the greatest riffs he ever heard .
Leslie is a fantastic guitarist ! and what a voice .
Rest In Power Leslie 🤘🔥
My friends saw Mountain (early seventies) with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They liked Mountain, but said they were too loud. I was into fusion Jazz, but now wish I had seen Mountain and Grateful Dead.
Glad to see Leslie still playing and with all his heart. He still has it! I did see the band Yes, they blew Emerson, Lake and Palmer away. Steve Howe-unbelievable show.
Mr.Tone once again, all who say something else please read the books and listen rock n roll history here it is!! peace for all
Felix Pappalardi was one of most under rated bass players ever.
..bass player!? The guy could practically play anything, and he had the voice of an angel. RIP
Agree. But that’s not Felix in this video. It’s post-mountain
@@mrmott44 He's either referring to Felix or he doesn't know the real Mountain.
True, but this is not Felix. He was shot to death in 1983.
What makes you think he's underrated?
The one and only Leslie, and what a band
Hahahah, love the "FBI WARNING" at the start.
Mountain rocks.
off the cuff yet massive. The Great Gatsby dominates with chops galore & personality !
Mark Clarke is one of the greats of the bass... check out his work with Coloseum. (Coloseum's other members performed on Jack Bruce's first solo LP after Cream, Songs for a Tailor. Leslie's tone, especially on the edge of feedback is still his signature sound. It doesn't matter what axe he plays, his sound is unmistakable and instantly recognizable as his!
Coliseum was a great band
Fantastic!!!
Show em HOW ITS DONE Leslie!
The GodFather Of Rock.. The Andre The Giant of Fashion.... The Paul Bunyon of the Axe...
Rock On baby!!!
I see that you wrote this 14 years ago (!), but I love the titles you gave Leslie, especially the "Andre the Giant of Fashion." Great stuff!
@@eriklindhurst5793 Lol thanks! :) Just was having some fun with it. Soon after this post came the title "the King of Tone" on some other video. That one stuck ;)
@@depper Ha ha! Thanks, depper. I am 56 now, but I have a sister who is twelve years older, so I grew up listening to Mountain (Climbing!) and other great music. Love it! "Andre the Giant of Fashion"! Hilarious 'cause it's true!
@@eriklindhurst5793 Yep that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! :)~~ That's terrific. I started this account and the fan club to see if ANY Mountain fans were out there... and look at us now! :)
@@depper Oh! One more thing! You probably already know this, but I seem to recall a DJ calling Leslie West the "Round Mound of Sound". Indeed he was! Peace, brother.
Bad ass on the drums
I saw them live twice. Once denver and then they played for free in the boulder mountain canyon the next day. Left hand canyon. I put this album in deck 1.5 years ago and enjoy it every day. Too bad the press didn't even report when Leslie passed.
Iron Butterfly was a pleasent surprise, very entertaining, but Mountain was best that night hands down. Leslie's tone was HUGE.
The Many Saints of Newark soundtrack brought me here 🤘🏼
me too,thank you ton
Me too!!!
This song absolutely rocks.Nantucket Sleighride one of the great classic albums.
That was awesome!
He threw the drumstick at the guitar player, and he threw it in the crowd. 👌 Wow.
@1:55
i saw west, bruce and laing on good friday 20 april1973 at The Rainbow in N London-startling!jack bruce slung his gibson eb3 bass into the audience at the end of the show, the effect slightly spoiled by a roadie scampering to retrieve it
Great! Trio magic. I was very pleased with dvd.
I idolized these guys when I was a teenager. Had a chance to work a show with them a couple of years ago & was totally disappointed. Not very gracious or appreciative. Sometimes it's better if you never meet your heroes!! Ritchie Scarlett was a gentleman!!!
Appreciative of what? What was it that you did for Leslie?
I've spoken to Leslie & Corky many times before and after shows. Always friendly, even when Leslie was grumpy he was still polite and used his dry humor. One night at a small venue in Rochester NY, I stood in front of him and just kept screaming "DREAMS OF MILK AND HONEY!!!". They never play it anymore. After about 5 songs he gave me a dirty look, then smiled and roared into "Dreams of Milk and Honey"!!! Corky and Ritchie followed suit. Blew my shit away. I'll never forget that as long as I live!
..Leslie looks like a real mountain man! I miss the LP juniors, it's as if he abandoned an old friend to be with someone who had all the bells and whistles.
.
Added to favourites, thanks.
Nice flashback,thank you
I saw them in San Diego in 74, can't recall what date. Remembered that they really had the power up and were really cranking out some jam so intense that afterward my ears were ringing like a big dog on the ride home. Anyone have a chronological listing of their 74 tour?
Love it!
Skill ,and his voice ...
i like mountain in the 70´s
HEAVY HEAVY ROCK N' ROLL !!!...SUPER !!
Their "Climbing!" album is very cool.
Do it Leslie! well done.
RIP LESLIE WEST !!!!!
Don't get too much better than this.
I got told off by Leslie for getting Corky stoned before the gig - still got the roach lol!
✌🥴
Pause at 1:43 ,and it looks like Leslie threw a cymbal and stand at the drummer.....LOL
Ya man .He sure did . Was pissed .Leslie was always tough on stage . Seen ,Him in early days w/ Vagrants. He was street wise on....
If i can read lips laing said "c'mon leslie , you fat shit" ...thats what provoked west ...i guess .
Classic!!! Enjoy because music like this is not made anymore thanks to MTV and rap..
Leslie West was early influence on my favorite guitar player, Michael Schenker.
Hell Yeah!
Like this song a little faster. As for the who is better shit. It is all a matter of taste. There is alot of hot rod guitar players around. don't have any of their albums but I got most of these two guys albums. Always loved the players looking for that one right note at the right time. Like a singer and not a guy on a drill press.
FAR out 😊
Corky always had sticks flying off the stage and into the audience. I never ever seen it happen before until I seen Mountain back in the 70's. It was his trademark. People would clammer to retrieve the sticks. Sora like they do nowadays when a guitar player tosses picks out. But picks are safer.
@rodentcafeteria It was Leslie motioning to Corky to toss him a drumstick.Corky tossed the drumstick(without missing a beat, lol),Leslie caught it behind his back and tossed it into the audience! Great rock and great fun!
RIP Leslie West.
Corky !! ....... good grief, J.H. Bonham., Keith Moon & Ginger Baker worshipped this dude. Very few know this history.
you gotta be kiddin me i saw mountain live swing autorium san berdoo 71 still remembeer it to this day
Ahh yes the Swing. Then the plane hit it and we had the Orange Pavilion. Berdoo never could make decision on a venue. Too bad a lot of legends played the Swing in its heyday
It is on the website.. look closer.
Love this band and this version is actually good considering the fact that Leslie could probably break down and die any second.
Corky has lost his stick catching buddy. R.I.P. Mr. West.
actually Mountain had broken up long before Felix died. After when they got back together after the demise of West, Bruce & Laing, Leslie had refused to let Steve Knight (keyboards) back into the band. So they did a stint with Leslie, Felix, Corky and rhythm guitar player David Perry, which actually sounded pretty good. I don't know why Leslie hated Steve Knight so much (despite the fact that Steve Knight was a good friend of Felix, but couldn't play keys very well).
well you are certainly proud of your friends and they do a decent job HOWEVER MOUNTAIN they are not...CORKY,LESLIE AND FELIX are legends dude and for good reason.
Velmoose's book will only be seen on some magazine rack in some crummy gas station by a trailor park in Savannah, GA
RIP Leslie
Yes, and she was the Mountain cover artist, too. Apparently Felix was gettin' it on the side, so she got mad, shot him, and also managed to disappear before she could be detained as a suspect.
west, bruce & laing were actually something of a side project, yes. check out there first album; not quite mountain, but still has some pretty cool material.
blazin'
Concerning Felix's murder by his wife. She was and tried for the murder and got off using PMS as an excuse. Outside of the courtroom Limo with her lawyer a photographer took a pic of them sharing some champagne to celebrate her acquittal. The judge saw it in the paper the next day and became furious at the so-called "grieving widow" that he placed a freeze on any and all of Felix's assets so that she could not collect one thin dime. Felix at that point left an estate of about $800,000.00
Yeah, but after getting out of jail, she went straight to Mountain manager Bud Prager and sold/assigned her Cream royalties to him for $25k in cash and promptly split to Mexico......where she recently died alone from cancer.
VERY GOOD!!!!!
@@jeffreymalack3723id say thats a fair ending.
85 you gotta be kidding me i first saw mountain in 71 ?
I saw Yes and Emerson Lake and Palmer. Yes blew the joint down. They were great.
god dammit i needs a studio version HOmey!
Wammo Jammo !!!
This was good fucking Rock music brothers'
AMEN....
Leslie past away four days ago...
Dec. 27 2020
I really wanted to enjoy this but the advertisement got in the way. Thanks a lot Mootain.
@rodentcafeteria Haha relax, thats Leslie and Corky doing what they do best, KICKIN ASS ONstage! See in those days "kicking ass on stage" meant just that. Not no "MTV badasses" here. No makeup to be found. Mountain were and still are VERY aggressive. They are also lifelong friends. Practically brothers.
My uncle used to to drive leslie around in a limo,he'd make my uncle go to the store and he'd have to buy 13 candy bars and 9 liters of coke and pick up leslie
Liters or ounces ??

J'y étais aussi ce soir là au Palais des sports de la porte de Versailles.
Mountain faisais la première partie de Deep Purple
Inoubliable !!!...
That FBI warning does not scare me.
Essa música é fodastica
This is really cool. can you post Why Dontcha? from this concert?
my favourite "piece" of Mountain. But this version is aweful
Absolutely filthy riff and hook, with some funky ass mitch mitchell-esque changing of the gears behind the kit. Can the bass (or guitar or drums) sound any more potent?
Sweet Hezuze!!!
Yea to me Leslie was to guitar what Elvis was to voice. They each played their "instrument ith near suicidal passion... its what set them apart in their respective fields...
@twylaharp1965 Strange you would say that. One look at him today, 26 years later, and he's considerably lighter, fitter, and healthier.
@depper Strange? Why? He´s obviously in no good shape here. But off course I´m happy that he´s made it and that he´s healthier than ever today.
Hay hat vorum necorum.

Leslie pretty agile for a big man !..
