The best version of Never In My Life ever recorded, in my opinion. Leslie was just on fire on this tour. Recorded during the "Night of the Guitar" event at Hammersmith Odeon in London on Nov. 26, 1988. Видеоклипы
I've seen 50 years of hard rock and heavy metal from the very beginning to today, and NEVER IN MY LIFE has anyone gotten that thunderous TONE that Leslie does. I was priveledged to see him several times, including the tour where he played this Steinberger/Marshall set up and have never heard anything as spine chilling before or since. He was truly the King of Tone. RIP Leslie.
No truer words have ever been typed out in a message!
And this man , nor Mountain, is in the hall of fame ? That is a fucking crime !!!
@@tomcampbell9645 The RRHOF is way beneath him.
@Kalah Rede you don't know what the fuck you're talking about little girl 😂
Leslie West does have truly great tone
The tone in EVERY NOTE is unparalleled in guitar history! Loud as hell and straight ahead!!
This is what it happens ,when the soul of a man is singing through the instrument
WOW! Beautiful said!
He speaks music through his guitar. Mountain played a free show at the univ of tampa and when the man came on stage with his les paul jr i thought he was playing a toy. But leslie had that guitar singing such sweet sounds. I've seen EC, led zep, pink floyd, and they all played their songs great but Leslie was his songs.
exactly. he sings through his guitar. but just imagine if he had hired Robert Plant as well
Hell he was just a few years too late
@@allasswell2557 Absolutley . I know from experience .
You can hear the emotion pouring out of the pickups. Leslie West forever!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Leslie West is one of the great unsung heroes of guitar.
Leslie West died today, at the age of 75.
Rest in peace. 1945-2020.
One of the true greats. R.I.P
Got a chance to see West Bruce & Laing sound check at the Hollywood palladium & it smoked !!
It was EPIC - life changing !!
standing in front that power trio tore into 5 /6 songs!
Other than West Bruce and Laing"s Roadies the palladium was empty.
Kids in high school ...... 💖😎
Another great musician gone, never to be forgotten.
RIP Leslie West. A true pioneer of raw, amazing tone. What an absolute amazing musician.
RIP Leslie West, one of the originators of great hard rock guitar tone.
Leslie West is just about the "purest" hard rock guitarist ever
Simply fantastic, love Leslie West, stood back stage right one night, with my jaw dropped, as he played on of my buddy's brand new Marshall amp, and cranked it to 11, he only could rent 2, needed 3, so we ran home and got his, my friend was crapping his pants, rofl, was one of the best time ever.
Shredding weenies need not apply. This is the sound of the real meat & potatoes. Thank you, big man. The world is a little too quiet without you. RIP.
I was there - he was the loudest thing I had ever heard.
I could only imagine how LOUD West was then on Stage. With 4 Marshall Stacks behind him...WOW!
I Saw Hendrix in Seattle..he "only" had 2 Marhall Stacks.
There is no POSSIBLE name for Leslie West better suited then "The King of Tone."
Straight & to the point, just like the man and his music.
Yes exactly I saw him in England
1972 I think at University of Newcastle He hit me right between the eyes no superficial artistry just pure blues rock
*than
Watch the look on leslie's face at the end of the song when he brings the guitar and amp into another dimension.....Funny, and ultimate showmanship....Thanks Mr. West
Man, Leslie has that greasy, grimy, gritty, nasty tone that I love in rock guitar. One of my fav players! Hendrix told LW that he liked the intro to this tune. What a compliment from the master.
stan yarbrough this New Yorker plays like the way he thinks
In 1970 my brother came home from college and brought an album for me to hear. It was Mountain Climbing. He played Mississippi Queen and Theme and my life was changed.
I remember hearing it on the radio and immediately found a way to the record store to buy it. Still have that album, though it's pretty much worn out. Brilliant brilliant album!!
"Thank you for having me" such humility in the face of genius. Class act!
The brown tone in Leslie's guitar is what EVH used to model his unique tone.
My dad introduced me to Leslie West Every time I play this I can see his feet tapping to the music. Happy memories great guitarist
Listen to those Marshall amps howl at 4:51,I love the way he look's around afterward ! Priceless !!
Not a wasted note. Outstanding tone and not an ounce of shredding
one of my favorite west songs ever....seen the whole crew in crosley field around 1970 , the man can sure make that guitar sing....
One of the best guitarist in the history of rock!...R.I.P. 🙏
Leslie West is by far one of the best guitarist in the world......FCKIN' A'
It's no wonder Leslie received the biggest pop of the night from the audience. The tone stood light years above the other legendary players on that tour.
I was 18 from fiji. Grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and deep purple. Did not like American rock music. Big band was doors .Santana. Came to America. Heard mountain that was it. The search was over. Never heard vocals and guitar like that in my life. 3 piece band. We lost a great one but he left us with the greatest music.
Yes, though there were lots of great hard rock bands besides Mountain.
The Feedback King! FIVE Marshall double stacks!!?? Jesus, how was this man not deaf??!! R.I.P. Leslie, we love you.
All you have to do is listen to Dream Sequence on the Flowers of Evil album to know that NOBODY could handle feedback like Leslie, except for Jimi. While you're at it, continue listening to Dreams of Milk and Honey and hear the back and forth between Leslie and Felix ... probably the best bass / guitar interplay ever recorded.
Flex was very affected , comes with the territory unfortunately, I have issues started many years ago, stage hand with John Scher/ monarch entertainment, Capitol Theater NJ , SABBATH, QUEEN , DEEP PURPLE etc , ears are ouchy .😅
On top of all his skills and natural talent this guy had a quite a commanding stage presence, and from the beginning. He certainly left us wanting more.
Geezzz.._ his onstage volume is frightening! Love it!!!
With all them stacks of Marshalls up there I bet it was painfully loud.
Not a shredder by any means, but this dude can rock his ass off.A true underrated legend.
Hahaha.
UNDERRATED by WHO??... absolutely no one!
@@kevinkelly1529 Most kids today wouldn't know who he was, wake up and get your head out of your ass.
Well it approves once again that one does not have to shred in order to make "MOUNTAINS" MOVE and QUAKE.
“Shredder” is just another word for fretboard masturbator.
Shredding is way overrated
I saw West Bruce and Lang play this at a college auditorium in the middle 70s. I thought my head was gonna blow off, he was so loud. It was great. Very underrated guitarist.
At FSU?
Mountain played at the Loyola Field House in N.O. (73-74). Good music at a poor venue. The next year West and Lang returned with Jack Bruce on bass at the Warehouse (N.O.) and it was very, very HEAVY as we used to say.
yeah, most people I speak to think West is from down south, especially because of his worldwide smash hit Mississippi Queen. He was actually born in Forest Hills (Queens, NY). However he was raised on jazz and the blues, and thats why its so evident in his playing.
People were afraid to approach Leslie (maybe because of his size) until Howard Stern gave him a voice and ear in the mid '80s. Thats when fans learned he was sharp and down to earth, and a very funny guy.
Leslie West by far is a GUITAR GOD!!! ...he can play a mellow, kick back ,have a glass of wine song and then come at you BALLS TO THE WALL,KICK ASS, IN YOUR FACE,RIP'SHREDDING,sounds that would peel paint off the wall!!! Leslie you are THE MAN!!!
Was fortunate enough to have seen Mountain back in '72 when Leslie was still Everest-sized and belting out the vocals an octave up from this performance...phenomenal band!!!
I was there that night.Shitload of great guitarists but Leslie blew my mind.
Saw it on tv - fairly sure my mate was there.. bought the dvd..
Great intro into Never In My Life before being hit with that monster guitar riff. One of the great riffs of all time. Blessed to be alive during the golden age of Rock.
The true guitar masters like LW don’t miss a note, no string scratches...flawless guitar work
Yo ski, do you even play?
@@blueheron5232 as a matter of fact, yes...both guitar and bass. You?
@@dougvolinski5824 Guitar and probably for longer than you've been alive, shipmate.
If you never make a mistake, you aren't trying very hard. Van Halen often griped about mistakes of his no one actually caught and Clapton has never been happy with his part on the studio version of "Crossroads" saying it's NOT what he meant to play. You're entitled to your opinion. No one has to agree with it.
You must be pretty “shipmate”. Used to sneak into my sister’s room when I was 9 to play on her acoustic. Bought my first guitar, a Crestwood SG style and and old Premier tube amp when I was 12. I’m 60 now so you do the math. Sat in a bar in Detroit and saw Mr West play several years ago. We were about maybe 15 feet away. I am just complimenting his playing. Didn’t expect to have to reply to someone nit picking my words. Enjoy
Oops, need to add a correction...Blue Heron you must be pretty old then, “shipmate”
Leslie was a great guitarist. Some of the best riffs ever.
Yes, this is the best video of Never In My Life. Mountain used to open with this tune. Thunderous.
What an underrated, underappreciated genius of rock. Leslie West, simply put, is absolutely nothing short of amazing. Such a nasty raw tone to his playing and voice.
Had the pleasure of hanging out with Corky for hours ,what a great crazy sincere dude ,Met Leslie just to say hello ,but he heard I was from NY and gave me a signed pic and a few guitar pics with his name on them ,, On Yasgurs farm, theme from imaginary western , long red ,on and on. Miss them greatly
1:10 just love how he incorporates Santo & Johnny "Sleepwalk" here, simply amazing. I noticed he mixes it up a little differently each live show he does. His style and sound is always fresh and never dated. This listener doesn't think so anyway. Thanks for sharing
So fucking cool
This performance summarizes how much this guy would do. Man what a show.
Nope. Type in "Santo & Johnny - Sleep Walk 1959" into search bar in youtube for a listen to the entire song played live.
Big ups to Leslie for recreating this instrumental gem & tipping his cap to a few "tone kings" of a long forgotten generation.
His sound is outstanding.
I love that song, Leslie is one jamming rocker. The best.
Big man, with the BIG tone-gone but never forgotten!!!
Oh man that has to be one of the best riffs of all time.
The guy is awesome!! Does it with such ease!!
Leslie, we love you. Hope you still rocking up there.
Leslie my inspiration , he's what rock n roll is all about.
Rock and Roll at it's finest!
Amazing guitarist and great talent ( like the Exodus melody he opened with). His gifts to us will be remembered.
Sickest tone on you tube.....kills it
BRILLIANT this is heavy as it gets Leslie guitar tone legend.
Cincinnati Pop 1970, thanks for the memories.
Such a great legend ….Eddie V.. had a great admiration for Leslie
Just love Leslie's music
This man was brilliant!
studio version is the best, the intro just has a great feel and the guitar sustains with that power chord in an awesome fashion, ascending into an upper harmonic.
I love the grin on his face @ 5:22 after he blew everyones shit away!
RIP Leslie.👍
INDUCT THIS MAN!!!!!!!!!
MAN Leslie West is wailing with that tone. Awesome beginning to this. Classic Rock at it`s best, Loud and Proud Right On Glenn Augustyn
I am just glad Leslie West still kicks out the jams, love his pure rock playing
Fabulous!
The best guitar tone of all time
R.I.P. Big Guy
depper, thanks for posting all these LW videos. he is so great. i grew up in nyc and was lucky to see him and the band pretty early on. 'king of tone', for sure....but the guy's phrasing is perfect,he doesn't overplay, and he's a really a soulful and passionate player.....all of which make him one of the best of the best ever.
Absolutely!
+Claude Smith yes!!
WHAT-A-BEAST!
I ran into Leslie at a "old mans bar" after hitting the strip clubs on Rt 110 one night in Farmingdale L.I. it was 1969. I was driving home at 2AM loaded and I heard this wailing guitar while I sat at a red light. being in my own band I said to myself "man I have to go in and check that out," it was leslie West. he was playing a les paul jr. by himself with a small marshall amp on a one foot high triangle platform in the corner of the bar, I sat had a beer & watched him play.. as I left I said to him, "that was great man" he said thanks and that he was there to help out a friend. I left and don't remember anything more than that but I was lucky to meet him one on one.. true story !
Thanks for the story - that was awesome!!
hang in there Leslie... love your playing... one of a kind and the best rock and roller I know...
Wow! Fabulous - what a player! I'm so sorry I took so long to discover you. Brilliant, gorgeous, just right, tone-perfect playing, and can do everything. Wow again. And he sings great too!
The one an only king in my eyes !
what a sound a he was never recognized as he should of been WHY listen to that sound wow wow he amazes me everytime i love his style
LESLIE WAS AMAZING
GLADI SAW HIM TWICE
Let’s face it when you got it, you got it, and Mr. West had it all in spades
Such an awesome live piece here that showcases some of Leslie West's amazing gift! A true guitar legend who's sounds influenced so many other guitarists. Besides making the whole room move, this guy could make everyone's gut chord curled metal wires dance at just the right times!!
I once saw Humble Pie , Mountain and Black Sabbath at the Spectrum in Philly. Humble Pie rocked , Mountain blew both Humble Pie and Sabbath off the stage . Leslie was that good that night.
God how time go by so fast 💨 seams like just the other day in 1970 went two every show that was playing in nyc now Iam 65 but I still rock and roll 🎸 still 24. 7. Iam not dead 💀 yet captain jack 🇮🇪🌏🇮🇪☘️🐚🎶
Saw Mountain...1970...Palace Theater, Albany, NY. Loudest band i have heard. My ears rang for 2 days afterwards. Dangerous also... Corky Laing must of flung 50 drum sticks into the crowd. Hard. too.
+Richard Baxter i spent the whole night trying to catch a drumstick in Glasgow, from Corky,in the end i got hit in the face by one when i gave up trying,i still have the drumstick
Wow! Great sound!
One of our founding fathers of American rock. Royalty. Sleep well sweet prince
along with Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Leslie West is one of the Best Guitar Players
Hank Marvin. Don't forget Hank Marvin.
Don't forget Frank Marino!
Take Jimmy Page off. And add Paul kossoff.
Thanks so much for share this video, blessings. Virtuosos, great, 💯🎼🎸
i saw this tour liverpool royal court 88 and at the end of t/f/a//i/western there was an eerie silence i dont think many people were expecting what leslie had just done (stunned).typical scouse humour one voice says can you play anything heavy.leslie says you want heavy.the next two and a half minutes was the most incredible volume level, crunch tone ,ive heard he shook that building and if i listen hard i can still hear it know thankyou .mr west.
Just outf***ngstanding guitar work, so fluid & accurate and POWERful...keep on rocking Les !!!
I can only say I wish I'd discovered him sooner!
I build Marshall amps and the sound this man has captured is beautiful.......Best sound and I love the playing......
RIP Leslie West. The guy was an absolute beast on the guitar. Tone and chops for days. He was good friends with EVH and I put him right up there with him. It's terrible that they're both gone now. I'd take Leslie over guys like Steve Vai every time, and I love Steve Vai.
Leslie West is a very Cool Cat!
Many prayers going out to the King of Tone. Last weekend, Leslie had his leg amputated in order to save his life. The operation was a success. Now the toughest part begins, the recovery. We are all behind you Leslie! You have a wonderful family and friends around you. We will lift you up like you've lifted US up. Long live Leslie West!!!!!
Great player - awesome tone!
The first time I heard him play I thought he was the best. I still think he is the best-Leslie West!
Such control..... something way beyond my abilities! ... though the singing i can compete with
Oh to have seen him live 😢 this is music
I was fortunate enough to see him play twice with West, Bruce and Laing ... then even more fortunate to see Mountain, sans Steve Knight, with Felix Pappalardi - who was simply one of the greatest musical geniuses of his time. Leslie was always at his very best with Felix playing behind him.
Tons of power ! Leslie RIP
Was at a Portland, OR show bout 02 talking to Corky while he signed a drum stick for me and Leslie kindly signed one of his tee's. we talked about the 70 concert in Syracuse NY when Black Sabbath opened for them. got there late missed Sabbath but The Mountain was 2.5 hours of Flowers of Evil blaring ROCK! 17 years old my 1st and best ever concert.
The Great Leslie West !!!!
thank you Leslie for starting to take a little better care ! We still need you !!! Long time fan........
Randy never had one guitar idol; a singular influence... but he almost always mentioned Leslie when asked about influences. You can hear Leslie's influence in a lot of Randy's playing. It's subtle but it's definitely there. This guy helped shape, IMHO, the greatest live guitarist of all time.
this GUY is one of the greatest guitarists!
+Jay Tee Bee of all time
+MegaDyneSystems Randy California ?
randy savage?
MegaDyneSystems randy Castillo?
Some boy God bless him awesome guitarist
leslie west.........................what a man!
Maestro de maestros! Jimi Hendrix escuchaba a Leslie West como referencia! Inolvidable!
Here let me say it for everyone Lesly West is a fucking bad ass killer guitar player. What a legend what a sound.!
