Leslie West - Mississippi Queen - Dennis Miller Show

- Here's a rare TV appearance by Mountain on the short lived Dennis Miller Show in 1992!
A slim Leslie West (serious!) is on fire here, as are Corky and Richie. Hilarious ending as Leslie works his way onto "the couch" - what a dimwit that Dennis Miller is!
An extremely rare video of Leslie playing his Steinberger P series guitar. Man it looks like a toy even on a slimmed-down Leslie West, heh folks!? :) - Видеоклипы
Something you will never ever see on any talk show ever, ever again - the full power of two Marshall stacks. RIP you effing legend.
Indeed! Well said!
I do wish it was a Les Paul Jr. though.
Motorhead
the marshals are not turned on, probably playing through a Blues Jr behind the stacks
@@nobodiesbusinessstillnobod4811 Haha. So true. If they had two Marshall stacks in those studios (all those talk show studios are small beyond belief once you really see them in person) the entire audience would be at the ENT doc the next day, deaf as hell. This rocks nonetheless.
They just don't make music like this anymore!!! Such a great guitarist.
I think one of Leslie's trademarks was catching Corky's drum sticks that he bounced off his snare drum, then almost at the same time flinging it into the audience.
Yes! & that backhand throw was killer.
That's wild , any links?
In a word. Damn. Well, a few more. Can you not get enough of this kind of energy. I'm 71and I just want to jump off the ground.
Me too, Music like this really made my day, love it even if Im 70
Leslie West died today, at the age of 75.
Rest in peace. 1945-2020.
RIP a legend to our generation
Legend. Only word to describe his raw licks.
Rip Leslie West 😔🙏

As they said on SNL back in the day ---"more cowbell."!!!!!!! Rock & roll dudes.......................
MOUNTAIN NEEDS TO BE IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME 2021
Totally
For sure
So does Grand Funk Trapeze and many others...
They absolutely do but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. they constantly put in bands that have nothing to do with real rock and roll and bypass over the bands that ARE ROCK AND ROLL.
HOF illegitimizes it's self without Mountain ,Nugent ,Grand Funk and take a look at some of the other ones in there marginal rockers at best
rest in peace to a legend.
Love me some Mountain. Agreed. RIP.
Too many gone this year.
Leslie seemed a little gacked, but who wasn't in showbiz in '92?
@@johnnyfiveo Showbiz hell. We was all gacked. Lol!
what a fkking performance though.
Vanishing Point w/Barry Newman.
Thank God Corky was never replaced
Damn, that drummer is on point......!!!!
Corky Laing!
They're all three on point. Definition of a power trio.

I’ll never forget watching this live when I was 16. I was floored. When it was over I called my guitar instructor, an old hippy from Detroit, and he had just watched it also. We agreed to run through some Mountain songs and this sent me down a rabbit hole of 60’s and 70’s rock causing me to almost immediately abandon the metal I was focusing on at the time. They sure as hell don’t make em like this anymore.
Thanks for sharing. Nice little story.
"Don't make em like this anymore" also applies to those Steinbergers. That was the peak of guitar innovation right there. Carbon fiber, active pickups, Trans-trems. Wow.
If you want a modern throwback to 60s/70s rock listen to Greta Van Fleet. They sound just like Led Zeppelin. Like... JUST like them. I had the privilege of accidentally seeing them live before anyone knew who they were and they are incredible!
@@EpiphoneShredzzzzz Watched some live. Parody singing. Good guitar chording but massively shitty lead playing. Bass was ok, but I thought the drums had a shit sound and and the dude needs work.
Absolutely not 'just like them' or even close, dude.
@@sgt.thundercok4704 enough that if you Google both band names together, it's all about people saying that they ripped them off because they sound so similar. I guess you wouldn't think so if you're a Led Zeppelin fanatic but your elitist attitude is kinda gross so I'll leave you to it lol wasn't talking to you anyway
Another reason 2020 sucked !! All the great ones are leaving us, R.I.P. Leslie West, gone but never forgotten. Still have my vynle !!!
Amazing guitar tone from one of the legendary guitarists. RIP Leslie.
great @ Woodstock 69
The fact he’s getting that tone from a Steinberger? I mean, tone is in the speakers, but geez. Leslie was a beast. So under-appreciated (although EVH talked him up at any opportunity, and here you can definitely hear a lot of Leslie in Eddie’s rhythm playing).
According to an Interview, West was GIVEN Jimi Hendrix's Sunn Equipment, Leslie Used a Mixer Preamplifer to Feed the,Guitar Amplifiers for that early Sound
Can't help coming back to this again and again. I'm always smiling by the time it finishes 🕺
Leslie West was and is a criminally underrated under appreciated guitarist. I can only imagine how many are influenced by him without even knowing
@@holeemo maybe all that coke rendered his vocal chords useless.
Leslie was surely one of the best late sixties guitarists of R&R. There with Hendrix, Winter, Clapton, Page, Wood ect .
@KEM H. HAYES no he's still got 2 legs here. Just not a leg to stand on as a vocalist. That coke does things to your vocal chords as it slowly drips down your throat. That's why I chose to freebase!
I'll give you this - when he played a LP Jr, he took full advantage of that P90 pickup! Great tone!
RIP Mr West
I am back in high school in my brain. Music is my medicine. Hospitalized for most of ‘24, I knew Mountain would do the trick.

When I was about 12 years young, I met Leslie he was 10 yrs my SR . He gave me my hood nickname, "Cinnamon Girl" and once I was 15 I was at All of his concerts.... Then we both migrated to L.A. and we reunited at the HofBlues ...I miss you FAT MAN 😭🩸🌞🌿
Saw West at Hollywood Palladium as "West, Bruce and Laing" back in 1972.
Leslie West (guitar and vocals; formerly of Mountain), Jack Bruce (bass, harp, keyboards and vocals; ex-Cream), and Corky Laing (drums and vocals; ex-Mountain).
Stand up room only on the floor, no seats. It was loud. Stood right in front of the stage. Such a difference seeing them play right in front of me watching the chords, lead and their expressions so close. West had to be on something that night because I saw him play some chords so fast in succession that it was as fast as playing lead. Laing was bouncing his sticks off the drums into the air and crowd. Jack Bruce was playing the bass as though he was playing lead guitar. They played Cream songs too with outstanding improvising of West on guitar and Bruce on bass in the middle of the song and finally integrated back into original song towards the end.
It was an outstanding performance of the three at their best.
After the concert could not hear a thing. My ears were shell shocked.
Looks like he filled that missing tooth
"You want my advice? Buy your wife a diamond ring, some flowers, a push-up bra. Don’t buy her a gun." ~ Leslie West

Power trio, I reckon so! POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big time!
Richie Scarlett gimme a break they should have gotten jack Bruce when Felix died

It gets real at about 4:07. That, is, rock and freaking roll.
Pure Talent, RIP Les!!
I love seeing Rich play! He gave show power no mattter who he was with.
RIP LESLIE 🙏 AND FELIX
TOO AMAZING ❤❤
Wow! I'm glad the description mentioned a "thinned Lesley West." He definitely lost some weight. He shaved off his huge pork chop sideburns and got his tooth fixed. Check out his 1970's video recording of this song. Gezzz big difference. Then check out Zakk Wylde playing this song on an acoustic guitar. Absolutely mind blowing. Damn what talent. Mississippi Queen has always been one of my top 5 Rock and Roll songs. RIP Leslie, damn you were good.
He was claimed to be 300 lbs at his heaviest
Definitely one of the guitar greats.R.I.P. brother.
Witnessed this band at "Toads" in Boston circa early 70's with Lee Michaels on piano. Damn, I'm OLD!
Saw Leslie West at the Hayloft Tavern in Vancouver, Wa back in the late 70's. Hardly anyone showed up so he told everyone that was there to grab their chairs and sit on the dance floor that was between the stage and seating. I bet I wasn't more than 12 feet from him and it was awesome seeing his technique so close. Played his heart out and bantered with us like we were all old friends. What a great guy.
Hayes Boyd Who cares about your comment.

What a tone!!!!!! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
A slim Leslie as is his guitar. He should never have stopped playing his Les Paul Jr.
I would leslie did a mountain of coke that night
What a tough year, another legend is gone. Summer of '70, 13 years old and Mississippi Queen is released as a single. My friends and I are air guitaring every single note, shaking our whole bodies to the deep blues-rock feel. I wore out my copy playing drums along with it, hitting those triplet fills with gusto! Rest in peace, Leslie. We all love you, respect you and will miss you forever.
man, i got caught 'air guitaring' with Mountain, Sears Wing Ding by a friend in '72. I was 15.
Like i read in an interview in GP with Leslie then figured i'd better 's#it or get off the pot'. Bought an Audition jag alike from a friend for $12.00 and tried to find my way. Played some parties and bar gigs. 12 electrics here now.
Latest, an Epi TSB LP Jr, 6 months old or so. Gave it a work out with LW stuff.
The most important player to me ever. Other cats were influenced by him !!
Happy Holidays !!
I was 6 in 1970 but loved it since i first heard it and still listen to it.
You were playing drum kit at 13, and knocking it along with Mountain; very cool. Yes, love and respect to our man, Mr. Leslie. You helped us get through stuff.
Besides his playing, he didn’t get enough credit for that great voice he had. What a vocal! Perfect for hard rock blues!
And Corky Lang uses the right amount of Cowbell and pounds the drums like they said something bad about his mother!
RIP Leslie West

Sorry but I think a lot of people here dont know what they are saying. This performance was amazing. Leslie is a guitar God and I loved everything about this video. I keep coming back to it because it's full of personality. Everything from the crazy riffs, great vocals, outfit, and even the funny failed drumstick toss. I love everything about this performance.
And that 70's ending joke !
Yessir those are the facts
Freakin Leslie, "we're not good enuff for the couch" RIP, if he wasn't shredding on guitar, he was making us laugh our asses off...
Leslie was very slim and trim at this time compared to his Woodstock days. He is one of my guitar heroes. I have two guitars autographed by him.
Love when Corky throws the drumstick at Leslie
Did he throw it or it slip out?
Corky kept throwing them and Leslie wanted one close enough where he could grab it and throw it.
Fucking love it.
And then Leslie turns around and starts shredding…
@@patrickkirby7612 it slips.
Seen this video several times and it NEVER gets old!!!! Leslie West ROCKS!!!!
The drum/cowbell intro - nothing like it. Great!
Saw him play with the vagrent’s at the CH in Forest Hills Gardens in the 1960ies! And they played a lot of clubs on LI, N.Y, saw them at the EYE on dune road. I knew he was a great guitarist, then, he went all the way like Billy Joel! RIP Forest Hills , Man, JohnBoyUtah, former N. Y .🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Meet these guys at record world in pompano bch Florida 🌴. They were signing posters. Man I wish I still had that poster.😢The 70s were GREAT TIMES
That guitar tone keeps me coming back for more !!!! This live performance version is SMMMMMMOOKING!
Except that the tone he has here is nothing like the tone he had in the earlier days. This one has way too much treble. I don't understand the reason that he got away from his earlier tone. That was the one that made him famous and garnered recognition from other guitarists.
Awesome.
drummer is rockin...West is buzzing out his eyeballs. 80s was a rough decade for speed freaks
I kept thinking he had "Lou Reed" eyes....RIP Leslie...
Yeah this sounds great the drummer is really good

Mountain did a show in 1983 at the Frolics in Salisbury Beach Mass. and I was a 20 year old stage manager. I remember Leslie yelling at me for some screw up I made and I almost pissed my pants.
holy shit-salisbury beach....havent been up there since the late 70s-how i got home....beats me-things were a tad hazy back then. RIP LESIE! i agree-VERY underrated. i have some blues shit he did-wow.. he was twice the size last time i saw him on that metal show when he'd lost the leg....oh-i remember what we were doing up there-probably going up to Jims in Seabrook (?) to get some ink as it wasnt legal in MA yet....when a t shirt was 9.99 and a tat the size of a silver dollar wasnt 300 bucks! i AM old-damn.
Salisbury Beach is pretty chill now as opposed to its rep years ago...no more amusements, Frolics long gone. In fact I prefer to go there over Hampton because it’s less congested .
Felix just died around that time and lived up there ...maybe that was one of the reasons for leslie being a jerk that night .

That was badass! I’m an old fart, so I’m allowed to get nostalgic here. I simply must state: that was a great bit of real, rock and roll SWAGGER! Huge tone, big phrases, all sitting on one huge pocket! So youngsters, when you’re finally able, set the way back machine for about 1970... you’ll get to hear where metal, djent, thrash came from! Take this classic, add Frankenstein by Edgar Winter group, Space Truckin’ by Deep Purple, Communication Breakdown, Dazed and Confused by Led Zep, Schools Out by Alice Cooper Band, Only Rock and Roll by The Rolling Stones, Hocus Pocus by Focus, and anything by Jimi while he was here in 1970... All this stuff was from OUTER SPACE in 1970. Black Sabbath, Uriah Heap, MC5, I could go on, 1970 had some supremely talented, heavy, inventive musicians, bands, music. OK, I’ll quiet down and go back to my flashback...
Hear Hear ..
As I ...66 years young..
No keep going it’s so true. I’m going to listen to those songs right now!
Hocus Pocus?
