If this could be the last thing I hear in my life, I'd go to sleep with a big smile. This from a 71 year old guy who saw tons of live performances as I grew up. Leslie was in a class by himself and to this day, when I play this as loud as I can, I flashback to people like this. I feel so lucky I was around to hear them all. And, I will never forget a single one.
Exactly Fair!!!! PS I haven't heard any other group, with such a unique combination of super voice, remarkable guitar tone and lead playing, ever since. Leslie also sings (simultaneously!!) at very high pitches without compromising his male voice. If you have in mind Gedy Lee or Robert Plant you'll get what I mean by that.
I watched this on tv in 1970 and it rocked my world. Leslie West’s guitar tone was absolutely the heaviest thing out there. Felix Pappalardi was a tremendous bassist with the voice of an angel. I miss both of them tremendously.

Although Mountain never sold millions and millions records, their influence cannot understated. Leslie West is one of the most emotional guitar players ... the solo in the studio version of Theme is one of the best ever recorded. If you ask many of the well know hard rock guitarists of the day, each will indicate that LW was a tremendous influence. Where would Cream be if Felix Pappalardi did not impart his musical genius on their platinum selling albums. This being said ... Mountain belongs in the R&R Hall of Fame.
truth ,..LW was a master at carrying the melody from the song into his solo's ,..better than anyone who ever played the guitar and that is the key otherwise it is just noise and one more jam that goes nowhere !!!his control when he is on is unmatched ,..most tasteful licks you will ever hear !!!
Yep! The first solo that was so emotional it blew me away. Just tet right fit in the haunting sound of the song. Learning guitar I finally nailed it and still play it occasionally. Leslie West inspired so many great players that came later.
Such a big loss and yes a Les Paul Junior one pickup that’s all Leslie needed and what a sound it was!! He was one of the first amps on 10! His solos where all tasteful.
Agreed! I have to be honest, I prefer this version to the original written by Jack Bruce of Cream. The song wouldn't exist without Mr Bruce, But Mountain really made it their own
Priceless. Felix Pappalardi renders one of the most soaring, majestic melodies of rock perfectly in any live recording I've ever heard of this song, this capture no exception. And listen to his bass lines during Leslie's guitar solo. Soaring in their own right. So fat, with just the correct hint of distortion.

ANYONE WHO DOES NOT THINK THAT MOUNTAIN IS ONE OF THE PREMIERE SUPERGROUPS OF THE 60's AND 70's HAS NO CLUE WHAT GOOD MUSIC IS. TALENTED, ELOQUENT, FORMIDABLE, INCREDIBLE ARTISTS. BAR NONE.
Listen to this song recently this year, and it does not compare with anything I've heard before. When sometimes the older people say "the music from before was better" is true.
This brought tears to my eyes. I'm guilty of knowing them only because of their overrated song " Mississippi Queen" but this one is just beautiful. The album "Climbing" makes me think of overcoming obstacles in life. This song comes to mind now whenever I'm going through obstacles. Thanks Mountain. Rip to Felix and Jack, hope ya'll are rockin together in heaven 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
Saw them live in Tallahassee FL right around this time, at most within a year and a half of this performance. I was blown away and it wasn't long before I bought a couple of their albums.
Holy crap, I was there! I have never seen any videos from this. It was quite a day-I’m sure I don’t remember everyone who was there, but I do remember Mountain, Traffic, Alice Cooper, Iggy and the Stooges, Bob Seger, Mott the Hoople (!), Ten Years After, Grand Funk Railroad, and a bunch of other bands. There was a band called Zephyr and I got their album afterwards,(which wasn’t great) but they faded into obscurity. Amazing show, though! Mountain had played quite a few times in Cincinnati before this. I saw them at a festival in the spring at Cincinnati Gardens before the outdoor one at Crosley Field. That one had Iggy as well, along with Savoy Brown, MC5, and a really underrated (and forgotten) band Frijid Pink. I think there were a bunch of local bands there as well. Wow. Unexpected memory lane this morning! 53 years ago!
@ohiowa3: There was a 90-minute edit of the Cincinnati Pop Festival that was broadcast later that year, under the name "Mid-Summer Rock." Surprised that you haven't seen it. No one sounds like Leslie West. ABSOLUTE One of a Kind sound. Jack Bruce said Leslie had the greatest vibrato he ever heard on guitar. THIS from a man who also played with Eric Clapton among others Rock's royalty.
Classic Bob Eric still plays exactly what he played 30 years ago. Leslie has moved on from where he was. Clapton has gone stale while Leslie is still vital.
I believe his name is Jake Bruce!? I'm so sorry i did my homework and I was wrong his name is Jack Bruce. PS i love the Cream live at the Royal Albert Hall!!!!! Sad to hear about one of the Worlds Best Bass Player Passing on.
i remember playing this for my daughter a few years back-and she exclaimed-'Dad,he sounds like YOU-'....I must have done TWO things right-couldnt be more proud-
TheEDZEPPELINBAND awesome. My daughter Marlo is an astounding violonist. I was a puppy pre-teen with older siblings when this came out. My brother and Dad drummers. Dad was blues, jazz big bad Kupra style taught my brother, then big bro Max learned acid, progressive, hard rock. Great times growing up in the "Boogie rooms" we had great stereos, speakers, black lights, when all people seemed cool in the 70s. What happened in 2020? I digress. Dinosaurs in Congress mob is what happened.
The link between Leslie and Felix is unmistakable in this footage. They are feeding off each other and creating, unbeknown to them, the best bit of music we have ever heard.
I saw Mountain 3 times between 69-71. I'm sure their influence on many groups that followed is greatly underestimated, and I know Lesley West's patented guitar sound is. I had the pleasure of being in a room with him in 71, and got to see and hear him jam on my 58 Strat. Still can't forget it.
stonelove919 Charlie Daniels opened for Joe Walsh in Tucson around then, did a phenomenal set then when Walsh came out and opened with that lame, tame Rocky Mountain High he was practically booed off the stage.
Franklin Colletta That song was Walsh post James Gang around 73.James Gang Rides Again and Thirds were a little earlier which was when I saw them. Believe me, there wasn't any booing. Different band, etc.Seeing Paul McCartney does not equal seeing the Beatles. Ya dig?
I recently heard this on the radio for the first time and Wow! Hauntingly beautiful ballad played by Mountain. I can’t stop listening over and over again. It’s PERFECTION!
Real players ... no lip sync. Back in the day when they really didn't know how to get great live feeds. This performance speaks volumes of their talent displayed for all to hear. Listen to that crowd!
It's beautiful. It touches you and you don't know how to explain it. Just a beautiful song executed perfectly. Thanks Jack Bruce. Thanks Felix. Thanks Mountain
Had tixs for Mountain with openers Climax Blues Band in Rochester ny 74' ,concert canceled! Had tix for Mountain and Joe Cocker in Mobile, Ala. In 74' also,Mountain cancels!! Never got to see Leslie West and Corky Laing until 2003!! But saw the show and got thier autographs and had a short conversation with Corky, Leslie looked like he didn't want to be bothered.
I don't believe he used a Mellotron, but he is hardly ever given a shot on camera. I think it's because he looked so different from the other members of the band. He does look out of place.
I wish Leslie's solo at the end just went on forever... I've played back must've been over 1000 times over the years and each time, wished its went on for hours... literally hypnotizes me
one of my favorite clips of all time, Leslies tone is just the shit!when my little girl heard it she said "DAD, he sounds like you". I've never been more proud-
Felix was so great, he probably sings this particular tune better than Jack Bruce who wrote it. And that is saying a damn lot because Jack is a top 10 all-time vocalist as far as i am concerned. And Leslie shows that you can play a great, great solo without playing a 1000 notes a minute. His guitar tone is terrific.
I don't know if Felix sang it better than Jack, but every bit as well, not to mention that he was a superb bassist and songwriter in his own right. It's tragic the way he passed. Add in Leslie's guitar excellence and vocals, the contributions of Steve and Corky, and Mountain remains one of the most talented, but underrated groups of all time.
Corky Lang is just killin' it....rounds off the flair of this band dramatically....Felix, after years as producer, of Fred Neil and Vince Martin's LP, then many others, including Cream, then his performance with Mountain...what a underrated force of the 60's and 70's.
What a great band. Leslie West just rips great riffs like he's walking down the street, easy as pie. I'm sorry it took his death yesterday to get me to remember how great these guys were.
The sound from this Junior belly banjo is amazing and so much Leslie West. These emotional melodies are simply unique and will be forever connected to one of the greatest rock guitarist ever. I also admired Felix Pappalardi both as a bass player and early producer of Cream album Wheels of Fire, a great musician. Mountain is still my all time no 1 rock band.

Mountain composed and played a few amazing songs about moments in history -- from whaling ventures set forth from places such as New Bedford to wagon trains crossing the plains and mountains of the American West. This band was monumental -- epic (to coin a well-worn phrase). Leslie, Felix, Corky, and Steve -- you gave us so much in the way of incredible music -- countless thanks.
I saw Mountain and West Bruce and Laing back in the early 70s...what explosive talent...each great in their own right. I will say that WBL was also the loudest act I have ever seen....and that is over 5 1/2 decades of concerts, ranging from The Beatles, to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Springsteen, Black Oak Arkansas, Deep Purple, ELP, Aerosmith,, Steppenwolf, etc, a lot of great rockers.... Ears rang for days after that show at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Ct....what a great show...blew us all away.
Must have watched this video a hundred times. Lesly West was such a beast with that Les Paul jr. You can see him slowly inching up the volume into the solos. It's like he can't hold it back.
I met them that year and hung around with them after the show. Great, great band and really nice guys! One of the best ever. Felix's voice was fantastic and Leslie West's guitar work was super. Corky Laing's drumming with great and Steve Knight was good, though they used him more as backup than an upfront player...

ANYONE WHO DOES NOT THINK THAT MOUNTAIN IS ONE OF THE PREMIERE SUPERGROUPS OF THE 60's AND 70's HAS NO CLUE WHAT GOOD MUSIC IS. TALENTED, ELOQUENT, FORMIDABLE, INCREDIBLE ARTISTS. BAR NONE.
shhh, we're listenin to the music. talk less.
I followed them around from concert to concert in the NJ NY area as a youth
One of the greatest rock songs ever written!
This is a really catchy tune and if you listen to it a few times it will be ingrained into your mind forever.
Possibly the most underrated rock band of all time !!!
Listen to this song recently this year, and it does not compare with anything I've heard before. When sometimes the older people say "the music from before was better" is true.
RIP Mr West. We will never forget your guitar playing and your powerful vocals...
I saw Mountain in Birmingham in 1971. I was blown away by both Leslie and Felix. RIP to both.
Just heard this song again on local Tucson radio. Breaks my heart every time. Perfect in every way . . vocals, keys, guitar. ❤
Rip to Felix and Jack, hope ya'll are rockin together in heaven
🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
Another great -a nd highly emotional Mountain song was "For Yasguir`s Farm."
Saw them live in Tallahassee FL right around this time, at most within a year and a half of this performance. I was blown away and it wasn't long before I bought a couple of their albums.
Leslie's tone and Felix's tenor.......amazing combo
Various posts of it have been a fixture on YT for a long while. Here's a link. Enjoy!

@@lumpytwangage Thanks. You know, I do vaguely recall this now and I might actually have seen it when it was broadcast, but I probably didn’t register it since I had seen the whole thing live not that long before. Fast forward 53+ years and I haven’t seen this stuff since. Glad it’s available!
No one sounds like Leslie West. ABSOLUTE One of a Kind sound. Jack Bruce said Leslie had the greatest vibrato he ever heard on guitar. THIS from a man who also played with Eric Clapton among others Rock's royalty.
from a Leslie fan....Leslie, today plays nowhere near when he was in his prime. While Eric his still great to this day. It's all good.
Classic Bob Eric still plays exactly what he played 30 years ago. Leslie has moved on from where he was. Clapton has gone stale while Leslie is still vital.
MrBrutus139 I disagree " to each his own" Still they're both living legends. I'm sadden by recent the death of Jack Bruce. RIP
I believe his name is Jake Bruce!? I'm so sorry i did my homework and I was wrong his name is Jack Bruce. PS i love the Cream live at the Royal Albert Hall!!!!! Sad to hear about one of the Worlds Best Bass Player Passing on.
depper hard to top that West vibrato.
i remember playing this for my daughter a few years back-and she exclaimed-'Dad,he sounds like YOU-'....I must have done TWO things right-couldnt be more proud-
TheEDZEPPELINBAND awesome.
Michael Tedesco Kinda like seeing Joe Walsh and The James Gang in 1971.that was pretty good
Agreed.
stonelove919 Charlie Daniels opened for Joe Walsh in Tucson around then, did a phenomenal set then when Walsh came out and opened with that lame, tame Rocky Mountain High he was practically booed off the stage.
Franklin Colletta That song was Walsh post James Gang around 73.James Gang Rides Again and Thirds were a little earlier which was when I saw them. Believe me, there wasn't any booing. Different band, etc.Seeing Paul McCartney does not equal seeing the Beatles. Ya dig?
Franklin is obviously thinking of Joe Denver.
RIP Leslie West. This concert might be the best example of his playing.....his TONE!!
Good reefer, my 8 track tape player, VW beetle and late night country roads, this song was magical, mystical, transcending.
NO ONE EVER gives a shout out to their fine melatron player, Steve Knight!
I don't believe he used a Mellotron, but he is hardly ever given a shot on camera. I think it's because he looked so different from the other members of the band. He does look out of place.
He was hidden for a reason
Hammond
Yup, Hammond organ.
So true. Steve Knight was one-fourth of the band.
Leslie West never got the recognition he deserved. Wonderful guitarist. RIP.
It simply doesn't get any better than this.
leslie's lead playing always
reminded me of violins!
sweet...smooth...elegant...pure-
cutting , right to the heart!
damn...so good!
Much better than Creem...Way more soul.
@@alvingrimes7053 👍
I don't know if Felix sang it better than Jack, but every bit as well, not to mention that he was a superb bassist and songwriter in his own right. It's tragic the way he passed. Add in Leslie's guitar excellence and vocals, the contributions of Steve and Corky, and Mountain remains one of the most talented, but underrated groups of all time.
You are absolutely right.
I loved Felix for bassplaying and singing, especially this Song.
@@hansfuzy1146 No doubt Hans. Felix was talented. Ty for shout out.
Corky Lang is just killin' it....rounds off the flair of this band dramatically....Felix, after years as producer, of Fred Neil and Vince Martin's LP, then many others, including Cream, then his performance with Mountain...what a underrated force of the 60's and 70's.
One of the greatest bands....one of the greatest songs.....
I was there. It was awesome.
R.I.P. Felix Pappalardi, thanks for Mountain, and your work as a producer with Cream. I love u bro.
fortunate to own a 1954 LP junior. I do Mississippi Queen and people freak at the amazing sound. Thanks Leslie...
What a great band. Leslie West just rips great riffs like he's walking down the street, easy as pie. I'm sorry it took his death yesterday to get me to remember how great these guys were.
Was at this concert. great band!
You are lucky! That must be a great memory.
Leslie West. Another great musician has left us but his music will live on. Rock In Peace.
"Fallen faces by the wayside looked as if they might have known"
lol they don't even mention Corky Lang, definitely a major part of the distinctive sound of Mountain
+renfro t zetz NO FELIX NO MOUNTAIN
eighta peach no mountain, no mountain
Yeah all i could think through the entire vid was 'aw man poor drummer...' XD
few drummers of the day get near the props they deserve
They don't mention Steve Knight on Keyboards either . But we must remember this was 1970 & announcers didn't know shit from shineola. .
what a cool, beautiful song.
If you missed them at Woodstock then here they are at the the their best, RIP Leslie and your Les Paul Jr. Thank you all for the music.
Fantastic Performance
A good example of the Leslie West's fluency and amazing control of tone. Great player, great band!
Leslie West was in a league of his own. I bow before you,Leslie. Godspeed Sir.
I love this so so so so much!! I adore Mountain very much!!! I would give up any band nowadays in 2019 to be at this precious show. Man I was born way way way to late. Long live th 60s and 70s and all the great that came with it.
This song is a classic masterpiece and is also timeless , but will take You back in time as well ! God Bless Felix Papallardi ! Leslie we love You too , brother , as well as Corky Laing a very under rated percussionist !
Absolutely one of my favorite songs! Great band, Felix had a singing voice that no one could beat!! Thanks for a great video man!
Exept Jack Bruce..., they sound simular.
What a song!
mountain should have been in the HOF yars ago, when LW was here to appreciate it.
Total brilliance! I watched this (way back in the day) when it was originally broadcast broadcast as "Midsummer Rock" on Channel 5 in NY. Grand Funk killed it as well....
WITHOUT A DOUBT, ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS ,ROCK MUSIC EVER HAD, MAN,WE WERE ALL SO BLESSED TO HAVE HAD ALL THESE GREAT BANDS TO LISTEN,AND LEARN FROM,THERE WILL NEVER BE GREAT BANDS LIKE THIS EVER AGAIN IN OUR LIFETIME,NEVER.😎🎸🔊🎶☮️ BOB
I remember watching this in my family room, on WTTG Channel 5 - when I was 12 years old. It was a hot, summer night.
Felix’s voice sounds so pure.
I agree, and now I’m a 69 year old man with tinnitus! 😂
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite groups. They NEVER play them on the radio for some reason. Thanks so much for posting this.
Maeby a long year ago so long feeling low so low close to closing my account I was hearing WDST radio woodstock they played MOUNTAIN "S NANTUCKET SLEIGHRIDE.....A LIFE SAVER RIGHT ON
Monte Farber ... an entire generation will have no clue about the great songs from bands like Mountain or Jefferson Airplane unless their parents expose them to their music because they are ignored by classic rock stations...
Just Mississippi Queen.
I was at this one day festival! At the old Crosley field in Cincinnati, early june 1970!! Great line up!!!
Holy shit this is what it was always supposed to be. Always.
RIP Leslie! King of the P90 Tone!
Leslie's solo's on this song are beyond soulful
I always thought Theme For An Imaginary Western had the best rock guitar solos ever recorded.
Tears in my eyes!!
This particular lead break had a huge part in encouraging Michael Schenker to begin playing. He's always quoted Leslie as being a massive encouragement. And when i now listen to UFO's "Force It" i can hear exactly what Michael was talking about.
beautiful song and what a loud clear guitar tone west gets here
Sunn PA heads cranked
@@superfuzzymomma Don't forget the les paul jr
P90's RULE!
My favourite Mountain / Bruce song. Mr. West's solo is in my top 10 fave solos of all time. I had the priveledge of seeing them at Place Des Nations Montreal in the 70's from the front row.
