10:39 wife sighed signaling “babe, clear the jam and let’s wrap this up and go inside for some coffee”. Thanks to both of you for battling the elements to bring us this review.
Just bought one. The recoil is less than a 9mm. It ran 200 rounds with no prob. It's also lighter than my compact pistol, m&p shield 2.0. I picked it up at my local gun store for $649. It's such a fun gun to shoot. My 2 buddies that went shooting with me now plan to buy one too.
One of my most favorite firearms in general, and also, in what I own, is my FN 5.7. I absolutely love that gun! When I found out about Ruger, making and releasing their version of the gun, the Ruger 57, I was extremely stoked! I will definitely be buying a Ruger 57, in the next few months. I also cannot wait to compare the Ruger 57, side by side against the FN 5.7, when I buy it and get them both to the range. With Ruger, releasing the Ruger 57, I hope it has a lot of success and I hope it proves to be on par or at least as reliable as the FN 5.7. With the FN 5.7, it is only one of a few firearms that I own, that are on par with the reliability and durability of my Glock handguns. My Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 handguns, are also, maybe on par with the reliability and durability of my Glocks too, but they will have on a few occasions, some minor malfunctions if I am training with them and the firearms get exposed to fine sand and/or real soupy, certain times of mud. With my Glocks, and my FN 5.7, they are the only 2 types of firearms that I have exposed to every element when training, and have not ever had them fail. With the Ruger 57, even if it does not perform as well as the FN 5.7, I will still buy it to simply show my support and appreciation of and for Ruger, for taking a risk, and building the Ruger 57. I really hope that the Ruger 57 sells and performs well, and that by doing so, it encourages other firearms manufacturers to also make a firearm chambered in 5.7x28mm. I also hope that it encourages more ammunition manufacturers to do the same thing as well. But keep in mind, that the FN 5.7, was designed specifically to have 5.7x28mm ammunition be armor piercing rounds and to defeat almost every level of body armor. Even at long ranges. With most people that hear about the 5.7 rounds and ammunition, they see the sub par effects from slower moving rounds, that do not perform anywhere near the ballistic capabilities of what the true 5.7 rounds do. Those same people, then go and think that the gun is an overpriced piece of junk that has hard to find ammunition and its performance is garbage and does very inadequate internal damage that is needed to properly stop a threat in a timely manner. But, if the intended FN SS90/SS190 armor piercing rounds are used, or rounds that are designed to perform in the same manner as those rounds are used. Something like the Elite Ammunition T6B rounds, where the rounds are traveling at a minimum of 2,450 ft/s, and the moment the hit a threat, and the round tumbles inside of the threat and it uses up all of its ballistic energy inside the threat, it does some amazing damage. In addition to the primary wound channel, there will also be multiple wound cavities. It’s not only from the round tumbling and going all throughout the threat, but from the pressure wave of the round, the tissue can only expand so far and the faster a round travels, the more internal damage is done and you multiple wound channels. The other reasons why the FN 5.7 and 5.7x28mm rounds were created, was because a handgun that could defeat body armor was needed. But they also needed the round to shoot with a flat trajectory, have very minimal recoil so not only men, but women as well, could use it too, and also fire the gun just as accurately as the men. The last requirement needed, was the ability to not only carry a large quantity of rounds, but they had to be light so as not to fatigue the person carrying the firearm and ammo, for great lengths of time. The last requirement needed, was that the firearm had to be absolutely, 100% reliable in every weather, and exposed to every element. And the FN 5.7 did all of that. The ammunition, and the firearm, met every single requirement and demand and performed unbelievably well.
That's what I am worried about with the Ruger 57, can I drop it into a puddle of mud or get it covered in dirt and leaves and have it still fire reliably? That open top looks like a mud and sand magnet. It looks like a target pistol and not a combat pistol.
It may not hit hard on steel, but the hydrostatic shock of this caliber is strong. It has everything I’d want from a carry round: Small size, high capacity, low recoil, flat trajectory, great clothing/armor penetration, hydroshock, yawing, fragmentation, and deposits all its energy with near zero chance of overpenetration. Accomplishes the same mission as 5.56 in a context where it makes 100% sense. This would make a great open carry and PDW round. Imagine if B&T made a TP57 and you slapped 30-40 round mags in it. Great stuff.
I thought about getting a 5.7x28mm barrel for my Thompson Centee Contender for longer range squirrel hunting. I did shoot a squirrel with a friends FN 5.7 at 40 yards. It just tore up the meat so I shelved the idea and will stick with rimfire ammo.

@@theimmortal4718 google is pretty easy to use but since I guess you don't understand it, I'll help. The 5.7x28mm round was developed in conjunction with the FN P90 for german special forces. They needed a compact submachine gun that could penetrate light body armor and sheet metal at short range that also was short enough for a driver to exit the vehicle and not hang the firearm up on the frame of the door. The P90 was a huge success and is currently used in over 40 countries. The FN 5-7 was designed 8 years after the P90 as a companion side arm. US seceret service use the 5-7 specifically for its penetration ability.
i knew a ww2 vet who fought in the battle of the bulge he said if you have to second guess about power of ur sidearm to be efficient in life or death situations its best to have one that actually works 45acp lol
Force is the mass times velocity squared. The reason it's good for armor and penetration is because the force is concentrated on a small caliber round. The reason a larger bullet does more to the steel is because of the bullets total energy, which is consistent with the increased inertia of the larger bullets.
Great, honest review. Pretty much how you've described the Ruger 57 has been my experience, as well. I've owned it for a month and trigger is near the bottom of my pistol collection and ammo is insanely expensive. It may not be a keeper. Have too many fine 9's and 45's to bother with this...
The long take-up is because of the hammer. Upon racking the slide, the hammer is cocked 95%. The trigger take-up does the other 5% before hitting the wall. It's the same set-up on LCPII and Security 9. So, yeah, it's a little different than 1911 that way.
This dude is the next Hickock45. A great shooter, nice guy, fun to watch and an amazing array of handguns. Oh yeah, and his own iconic range. Bro, you rattled off 40yd shots with a pistol like it was nothin!
Okay you can customize the trigger so it's a shorter pull but the pressure that gun generates the trigger needs to go back that far other wise your finger is gonna absorb most of that kinetic energy it wont be a chain. Gonna be awesome seeing ppl try to figure out the trigger and sights of this gun. Boy I'm excited
Looking forward to your full review. I’ve seen a couple of ballistics gel vids comparing 9mm, 10mm and 5.7. 5.7 doesn’t have as deeper penetration from the vids I’ve seen, but dumps an tremendous amount of energy after penetration leaving a nasty wound in the gel. I’m pessimistic as well, but open to more info. ✌🏻
Good to see and the Better Half back on the Farm! So used to seeing you with sunglasses, it was almost distracting to see you without em at Shot Show!👍
If you think this round is weak in terms of being an effective manstopper, look up what happened at Fort Hood, TX on 5 NOV 2009. The shooter used the SS192 ball round. The SS198, its equivalent is available today in 2021.
I believe this is what the FN should have been. It's got a steel slide that you can mount an optic to. And it has the controls in a more natural position. I think Ruger hit a home run with this. I'm sure folks who have invested in the FN57 will disagree. But this thing is nice
Being obsessed with the P90 as a kid and watching every documentary on FN there was, I have no desire for a 5.7x28 pistol. I'd do some dirty stuff for an PS-90 though.
The ps90 is phenomenal, I had to sell mine 2 yrs ago to pay some Bill's but it was fun to shoot. I let my uncle shoot it and he said it was the most fun gun hes ever shot and he loved that the casings dropped out from the bottom so all the brass was right there at his feet. If I was gonna get another I think I'd just do the tax stamp and get shorter version. If the ps90 had a threaded barrel i would of liked it more that way I could of put a different muzzle on it. Also the peep sight on it sucks, so best have a sight for it before you buy one.
My ruger 57 nosedived every mag for the first 3 rounds I've had it for a month and it's just now starting to fix it's the magazines there to stiff or just junk mags
Thanks for the review, I expect some growing pains with a new design so the occasional failure isn't unexpected but I'm going to wait for a few months and see if any other problems are reported before jumping in.
The 5.7 is a potent little round. The secret service and other law enforcement agency’s use it out of a p90, but the only real world use I know of unfortunately comes from the fort hood shooting. Fn5.7 killing 14 and incapacitated over 30 😢.
I am like you. Lots of folks say how great Ruger is but I have never gotten a Ruger "autoloading" pistol that worked for me. I would like to see Ruger get better at making autoloading pistols but after the 80s when they first had the P series, I am still waiting. I can recall two guys at the gun club back in the 80s with new Ruger P series pistols and they would tell me how great Ruger is while they were clearing jams. Hard not to laugh at that. I had a Ruger SR22 and it was a miserable failure for me no matter what ammo I used. The problem with the pistol was the slop or gap between the slide and the frame rails that could never be fixed without a new slide or frame that would fit. I saw another guy with an SR22 at the range one day and his sights fell off. Ruger has really good revolvers and rifles but autoloading pistols are not where they shine from my experience.
I would agree with you. Actually it kind of fascinates me that this round, kind of a mini AR, can be used in a pistol. I like choices. I also like the reverse, pistol rounds that are used in a carbines rifles, like a 9mm carbine.
The reasons are: 1/2 weight, soft body armor is ubiquitous, hydrostatic shock is superior to hp expansion, more reliable clambering, terminal ballistics superior, lower recoil.
Been lookin at stuff about the 5.7 round for the past 2 days and from the all the comments have seen most have been negative. Even when some channels praise it they say it’s kind of weak. Doesn’t have much kick and power but look what it does in ballistic gel gonna cop one soon 👌🏽✌🏽
As per the latest edition of American Rifleman... the trigger is listed as Double Action. The internal hammer is only partially cocked by the slide. The trigger takes it the rest of the way before releasing it. This may answer some negative comments about the trigger
I had my 57's slide black Cerakoted and mounted a HOLOSUN 509T circle/dot sight. BADASERY! - and very accurate at long distances (50 to 100 yards) with that sight. People who feel the 5.7 x 28 round is "weak" do not understand its true abilities. Watch some of the videos here on its capabilities OR go out and shoot some gelatin blocks, watermelons, sids of ribs, etc. for yourself and discover!
The reason is u trading knock down power for speed with that round that’s why it is not moving the plates much so speed vs bullet mass that’s why I like 40 9mm and 380 38 or 357 they are good balance rounds I call them u get good power and good speed best for both worlds 9mm 40 better for a little more kinetic energy but a trade off for a little less speed remember do u want a balance round fast round or powerhouse
just a little note, the reason the 5.7 doesnnt move the plates around as much as 9mm or larger isnt because it has less energy, it actually has about the same energy as 9mm. the reason it doesnt move ther plates as much is because the bullet doesnt have the mass to compete, 20-40 gr vs 115-147 gr also kinetic energy doesnt mean jack shit if you cant hit your target in a vital area, the human body can do some crazy things to keep its self alive.
Well for me it’s live in the middle of know where and buy some steal and shoot all I want. No neighbors no problems but takes me 30 mins to get to a store😂
I tried to get my hands on the Ruger 57 but couldn't get my hands on one. Since the FN Five-Seven was available I got one of those, definitely love the pistol but a negative for it. The damn magazine safety, one of my biggest hates for that pistol, other then that I am fully happy with it besides the price I payed almost double exactly after taxes.
Your average 9mm has about double the momentum that a 5.7 round does. Momentum (mass*velocity) is what moves the plates. Energy1/2*mass*velocity) is what damages tissue, sort of. The 5.7 and 9mm have about the same energy though. Obviously loads/barrel lengths matter but these are the broad strokes.
I bought my 5.7s before the Ft. Hood shooting. So, while the SS-192 has been proven to be a man-stopper, and really light in recoil, the blast is brutal on the ears. Hopefully, with Ruger in the game, ammo cost and options will increase. I hope they come out with a compact version with an ammo assortment consisting of incendiary/explosive tips.
Interesting, so many people here say they want the USA to be more like Sweden. Since you like guns , I propose we take you in and trade Sweden some anti-gun people?
the trigger was like that on a S&W Sigma 9mm I had for years. I couldn't take it anymore after getting other guns. Disappointed in this gun now. Thanks for sharing.
Idk if it's just you or what but the trigger on mine is awesome. Almost no take up and a crisp but light break. Next to my m17 it's one of the best stock triggers I've ever owned.
Ruger has put out many great products over the past several years now. Im sure the aftermarket industry will fix or modify the trigger for better peeformance.
I have not shot one yet, but I have dry fired one. It reminds me of the Walther Creed set up. I don't think it is true single action. I think it is pre-loaded double action like the Creed. If you watch the hidden hammer on the Ruger, you can see it rotate towards you as you pull through the creep. Then it releases. So it is almost like a striker fired pistol, but has a hammer. I really like that Ruger hid the hammer. It can be a major distraction on the Creed. Watching it come back before firing.

All the 5.7 fans will say "But Ft. Hood!". That A-hole could have had a .22LR and done committed the same carnage depending on the shot placement. I agree, the 5.7 is a lackluster caliber at best and I would never consider carrying it over something like 9mm.
Well my first impression of the gun was.....NICE.....VERY NICE; however, after shooting just 40 rds, 20 out of each mag I'm now seeing an issue with the mags. It appears the is getting jammed up and allowing the top 7 or 8 rds to just flop around loose in the mag and actually fall out. I also discovered if you load the mag until a round is clearly visible in the round indicated for 20 rds.......you'll actually have 21 rds in the mag. I loaded and shot 40 rds with no malfunctions of any kind, I just noticed that the rds in the mag were loose, so I decided to take the out. After removing the first rd, the next 8 or 9 rds were dancing around loose in the mag as the rest of the rds were jammed below the follower. Not a happy camper right now.

A most useful first use and look of this pistol and caliber, brief and cold though it be.
I came to here b4 ColionNoir's review and 100 yards ain't bad, congratulations Ruger.
Looks a lot nicer there than it is in NORTH Iowa! We were decently warm today, but we got a bunch of snow again last night.
Your wife is an excellent videographer, especially dealing with cold and wind.👍
Force is the mass times velocity squared. The reason it's good for armor and penetration is because the force is concentrated on a small caliber round. The reason a larger bullet does more to the steel is because of the bullets total energy, which is consistent with the increased inertia of the larger bullets.
Great, honest review. Pretty much how you've described the Ruger 57 has been my experience, as well. I've owned it for a month and trigger is near the bottom of my pistol collection and ammo is insanely expensive. It may not be a keeper. Have too many fine 9's and 45's to bother with this...
I’m in the club now, I found me a 57. The Academy here sold all five in less than two days.
The long take-up is because of the hammer. Upon racking the slide, the hammer is cocked 95%. The trigger take-up does the other 5% before hitting the wall. It's the same set-up on LCPII and Security 9. So, yeah, it's a little different than 1911 that way.
Powerful enough that it took down a black bear, here in Alaska. Headshot!
I live in iowa use to live in the QC now live in Coralville/north liberty. Love your page and love yourba iowan!!!!!!
How do u get on your patreon or however u spell it page????
thanks man, link in the description of each video
This dude is the next Hickock45. A great shooter, nice guy, fun to watch and an amazing array of handguns. Oh yeah, and his own iconic range. Bro, you rattled off 40yd shots with a pistol like it was nothin!
Naw
Initially I thought I wanted this, but I got over it.
So used to seeing you with sunglasses, it was almost distracting to see you without em at Shot Show!👍
I've owned 5 different Ruger pistols now with no malfunctions like I've seen multiple times on here out of glocks including the 57.
If you think this round is weak in terms of being an effective manstopper, look up what happened at Fort Hood, TX on 5 NOV 2009. The shooter used the SS192 ball round. The SS198, its equivalent is available today in 2021.
Free guns, free ammo, a range in your backyard, a wife that helps out, big red beard, living a dream
I believe this is what the FN should have been. It's got a steel slide that you can mount an optic to. And it has the controls in a more natural position. I think Ruger hit a home run with this. I'm sure folks who have invested in the FN57 will disagree. But this thing is nice
sean lowry umm FN is a steel slide...
You can mount optics as well on FN
Buying one of these as soon as I can FIND one, LOL. No specific need for it, just want it...
Thanks for the review, I expect some growing pains with a new design so the occasional failure isn't unexpected but I'm going to wait for a few months and see if any other problems are reported before jumping in.
A lot of new gun models have problems. It's good to wait till the manufacturer gets done with all the fixes and recalls before you spend the money.
The 5.7 is a potent little round. The secret service and other law enforcement agency’s use it out of a p90, but the only real world use I know of unfortunately comes from the fort hood shooting. Fn5.7 killing 14 and incapacitated over 30 😢.
"An ambidextrous safety on both sides" 🤣
This brand new Ruger 5.7mm pistol is much cooler and sexier than FN’s!!! 😎😎😎
Best 5.7 on the tube thanks for the honest review!
Love your vids. Your honest reviews helped me choose my edc. Keep up the good work.
I'm waiting on Springfield to release an XDM in 5.7mm.
Like the look. Would rather try this one before I buy. Appreciate the review, you've got nowhere to hide from that wind.
Read about the Ft. hood shooter
Thirteen fatal single shots, somewhere between the belt line, and neck, (not all center mass).
Devastating results from tumbling rounds.
Finally feels like forever since a review good to see you back
I am like you.
Bottle neck pistol rounds are the future.
Yes
I would agree with you. Actually it kind of fascinates me that this round, kind of a mini AR, can be used in a pistol.
I like choices. I also like the reverse, pistol rounds that are used in a carbines rifles, like a 9mm carbine.
The reasons are: 1/2 weight, soft body armor is ubiquitous, hydrostatic shock is superior to hp expansion, more reliable clambering, terminal ballistics superior, lower recoil.
Where is the 22TCM right now? Haven't heard much about it lately. Lots of muzzle flash with that round.
7.62x25 will rise again!
Cool kids have 5.7s 😎
Been lookin at stuff about the 5.7 round for the past 2 days and from the all the comments have seen most have been negative. Even when some channels praise it they say it’s kind of weak. Doesn’t have much kick and power but look what it does in ballistic gel gonna cop one soon 👌🏽✌🏽
Regarding the efficacy of the 5.7 caliber, review the kill stats from the Ft.Hood shooting.
I did and shit
As per the latest edition of American Rifleman... the trigger is listed as Double Action. The internal hammer is only partially cocked by the slide. The trigger takes it the rest of the way before releasing it. This may answer some negative comments about the trigger
Yep. It's partially cocked double action, and pulling the trigger to the rear, finishes pulling the hammer down and releasing it.
Oh nice! Great to see you shoot this. Cheers!
Gonna get one of these for my wife. Excited as hell.
That sigh of disappointment from your wife at 10:38 hits hard. I felt it.
Been waiting for your opinion...🤘
The only real problem with 5.7 is getting the same high velocity bullet performance out of more compact pistols.
Thanks for the no-BS review (as always). I think I'm still going to shell out the extra for the FN
just a little note, the reason the 5.7 doesnnt move the plates around as much as 9mm or larger isnt because it has less energy, it actually has about the same energy as 9mm. the reason it doesnt move ther plates as much is because the bullet doesnt have the mass to compete, 20-40 gr vs 115-147 gr
also kinetic energy doesnt mean jack shit if you cant hit your target in a vital area, the human body can do some crazy things to keep its self alive.
Have you ever thought about doing a video on what it takes to have your own range. Covering insurance and other pitfalls
Well for me it’s live in the middle of know where and buy some steal and shoot all I want. No neighbors no problems but takes me 30 mins to get to a store😂
@@nataliedeyton6829 I see you live close to town.
This video even sounds cold 🥶
0:15 "This is the new FN five seven..." Uh....huh.
0:28 "when i can just buy one", as a Swede, that sounds like a line from a sci fi movie.......
Interesting, so many people here say they want the USA to be more like Sweden. Since you like guns , I propose we take you in and trade Sweden some anti-gun people?
You should move to New Hampshire for the free state project.
@@starrychloe 20,000 is a low goal. Shows just how many people have that ideology.
@@starrychloe the what?
the trigger was like that on a S&W Sigma 9mm I had for years. I couldn't take it anymore after getting other guns. Disappointed in this gun now. Thanks for sharing.
Ruger mk4 triggers are amazing, so I can't understand how the 57 can have one of the worst I've felt in years.
It's on par with keltech, seriously
Mine was shooting low and to the left right out of the box and also about 6in groups at 7 yards. Glad to see I'm not the only one. Good review man!
Wish they were more readily available. Sold out most all FFLs
I just found your channel and just realized you are only a few hours away from me! Greetings from Northwest iowa!
My dad lives in Cherokee.
Oh how I wanted you to review this gun. I am interested in this gun, too!
I know I wont ever see it in California.
I appreciate so much your take on things.
I will edit this and make necessary changes.
thanks!
Edit: as expected, a great accurate thorough review!!!
When I picked up my FN 5.7 in Cali it was $1249. Turner's said they had 80 in the warehouse. Doubt if this one will ever be on the Cali approved list though.
@@jamesm.3307 James,
Talking to Turner's guys here in California, they felt it will never be seen in California. It is too much BS to deal with all the regulations. 😣

I see a lot of fascinating gun reviews, only to realize I will never see them. There are exceptions, one gun the Ruger PCC(barrel threaded), I can't believe it's still here. It's on my short list to get.
Oh and the Franklin Armory CA7 5.56 Nato 7.75" Barrel(true pistol grip), you seen what Hi Point had to do to their pistol grip carbines available in CA, it's downright ugly? www.turners.com/guns-rifles/browse/brand/hi-point-firearms

I’ll pay 26$ a box for 50 rd rn any time of the day. Crazy In 10 month the increase of ammo prices.
100 for a box of 50 now 😔
All the 5.7 fans will say "But Ft. Hood!". That A-hole could have had a .22LR and done committed the same carnage depending on the shot placement. I agree, the 5.7 is a lackluster caliber at best and I would never consider carrying it over something like 9mm.
I have one like this, so great 20 rounds
It even sounds cold way to go team
Great presentation, I just purchased one. Looking forward to shooting once I can find some ammo that won’t cost me a arm and a leg.
Dude I love your North face jacket cap gloves with the 57 you look slick bronato.
Very good video brother, thanks for sharing and, good team filming !
Never been to a gun range before. I will go one day when I have time. I never shot a gun before
When you do, once won't be enough. See the video, and watch all it. Its pretty funny but spot on. ruclips.net/video/caMHdcRNEkc/видео.html
