Wen you sew the 4” block to the corners, sew another line 1 half inch away and form a second bonus HST. Throw them in as bin of scraps for later. Thanks for sharing this jiffy block.
Love this block. It's easy yet very effective. Super-fast if you have the Creative Grids Folded Corner ruler. For greater variety, I avoided placing the same two fabrics squares together when making the half-square triangles.
I have ugly charm squares that I bought on sale. Now I know what to do with them. Thank you. The only thing I'd do when using the bigger sizes is sew another line 1/2" away and keep those smaller half-square triangles for another project. Or I could just sew them together and use them on the backing of the quilt. Cool!
Hey ya know it’s a lot easier to do all that if you iron the pieces as you go.I used to do like you do, but when you quilt without steaming the seams ,your quilt doesn’t come out without bunched up backing. But I’m glad more guys are getting into quilting and sewing.
Hey Zach, This pattern is going on my do list. Think I'll use it on one of the Alaska donation quilts I'm working on. Really like the fabric you chose. It gives it a vintage charm look. You're a natural teacher Zach! 💖
When you sew on the background fabric sew a second line a half inch away and you will have a half-squste triangle block to use in another project. A pillow maybe...

Great easy pattern! I don't have fat quarters but this is SUPERBLY adaptable to layers/charm squares or even charm/mini charm squares or any size. Background is half size of main color? Bravo. This would be great with white background and reds and blues as main color.

I have that cutter but haven’t used it yet. Is it simple and easier to use then a regular rotary blade? I’m legally blind so I use easy and simple… I’ll be returning to quilting after Christmas as I got 2 new machines but can’t have them til Christmas. 😊
I would have to figure out the pressing so that seams nest together when joining blocks. Also, I wonder how using 2 different colors when snowballing the edges would look to create an hourglass in the middle instead of a solid (white) square. I would totally use scraps for this with maybe the 4.5" square being the same color throughout (with or without the possible hourglass look).
I like the quilt, thank you for sharing. I would strongly encourage you to press before you cut and after you sew. This would give you a more accurate block. Keep us the good work.
Thanks for your speedy quilt tutorial. I’d love to know the finished size of quilt you get from 14 Fat Quarters and 2 yards of background (perhaps you could include that in the video description box?). Thanks!
do you have a tutorial on how to put backing on quilt and how to do trim as well. this will be my first attempt to make a quilt. want to make some for christmas gifts this year. i am a beginner sewer and have only done small fat quarter projects. would appreciate any video reference to do this project.
Would this work on a bigger scale with a layer cake (10 inch squares) and a charm pack (5 inch squares)? If I were to use precuts, should I cut them down? Or world the larger squares make a big difference (no pun intended)? I like the look of the quilt.

I love this quilt and intend to get started on it today. BUT…..I wish you would have said how many 4 1/2” and 8 1/2” squares are needed if we don’t use precuts. Also, what is the size of each completed block, and the size of the completed quilt. Also, should we iron our seams in a certain direction so the joints lay flat?
That is a 1600Q-PC. It is a wonderful machine. We would love to talk to you about machines and answer any questions you might have! You can email us at contact@sewyeahquilting.com and we would be happy to help you. Thank you!
?? I haven't been quilting long and still struggle with some of the math. If you get (4) 8.5 x 8.5 blocks from 1 FQ, and you're only using 14 FQ you would get 56 squares but the pattern say you need 110. What am I missing??
Thank you for watching! You only need the 56 squares. That will give you the 110 half square triangles when the are sewn together. I hope that helps! If you need any additional help you can email us at contact@sewyeahquilting.com and we would be happy to help!

If you want to prevent shadowing, press all of your seams open!
Hi there, I am working on this quilt with your instructions. My question is can you do the same with 6.5” squares and 3.5” squares respectively?
I would think that is a yes!

Do you backstitch at the beginning and end of your hst?
It's not necessary as they will be sewn together with another block or the binding. ☺️
Thanks Judith!
Zach, will this block work with a 10" square and a 5" square? or should the smaller square be 5 3/4 "
You should the answer by now lol. We are behind with comments. Catching up!!
Maybe it’s just because I’m slightly OCD but it bothers me when people cut fabric without ironing it. 😋
We'll try to be better about that.
You will find if the fabric is not ironed a head of time the cuts and sewing will not be accurate.
