  • What's the cost or replacing a timing belt? It's often well over a thousand dollars. Fortunately many vehicles can be serviced quite easily from home. In the process you'll save a ton of cash and learn how to complete this task at home.
The average labor cost to replace a timing belt can range from $200 - $900. The cost of a timing belt itself is only between $25 and $50. You should not opt for a “just the belt” replacement, as it increases the chances of further failure. You should also replace the water pump, tensioner, and pulleys at the same time.
This specific vehicle is a 2006 Acura TL. The timing belt and water pump procedure is very similar for those of you owning a:
Acura RL timing belt and water pump
Acura MDX timing belt and water pump
Acura ZDX timing belt and water pump
Honda Odyssey timing belt and water pump
Honda Accord V6 timing belt and water pump
Honda Ridgeline timing belt and water pump
Honda Pilot timing belt and water pump
Honda Crosstour timing belt and water pump
Here's a replacement video - • Subaru 2.5L EJ25 Timin... - performed on a Subaru. Although it's a completely different engine, the process is similar. Remove the drivebelt, any accessories in the way, lining up the camshafts and crankshaft to top dead center, remove the idler bearings, tensioner and water pump. It's always incredibly useful to purchase the factory repair manual for your vehicle. You'll find useful diagrams, repair procedures and torque specs.

You took the mystery on how to perform this service! It looks like a piece of cake once you remove the harmonic balancer. I was always wary of the cams being out of sync. Thanks to you, this is one less job the dealer will get! Oh, fantastic format on the video, no unnecessary enhancements, very concise.

Best video out there for Acura TL! So much detail within the process and not just listing steps. Giving me lots of confidence to do this myself. 2006, and tensioner needs to be replaced. However dont have a big budget, so wondering if i should just replace the tensioner, and leave the water pump and reuse the old belt 9if its in ok shape, of course).
    Thanks for making this!

Belt is dirty cheap, less than 20 bucks for a high quality one, its such a pain to remove everything to replace the belt that while it is in pieces it's easy to replace the tensioner bearing and water pump at the same time. If your vehicle doesn't have a reputation for wearing out tensioners and water pumps don't replace them.

The timing belt isn't the main issue even if its a bit soft due to age. The hydraulic tensioner are prone to failure due to any circumstance. Even brand new hydraulic tensioners can fail prematurely.

Terrific content! I love your TL vids. You’ve made me a master mechanic…almost! Lol. I’ll be happy to spend the $1000 dollars. Just don’t have the tools. Patience. Oil changes, motor mounts, serpentine belt, ok. Not this!!

Geez this is definitely not a beginner or even intermediate job. It took you over a week?? This is a job for people who have an extra car and can stand to wait at least a few days before having to use their car. Most Indy shops charge around 500-800 so for the average person, that seems more worth it. Especially since you literally had to buy a new impact gun for like 200-300 bucks without the battery. Either way awesome video

When those belts break on a Honda. They likely destroy the engine. (Interference Engine)

I stay away from those, of course if you stay on top of belts, but I don't like it. I understand they do this for more hp. I have a timing gear on my 89 buick. Manufactures know a good % of cars will end up in crusher with these belts so they love it.

Your right about the quality of thise original timing belts they rarely break it’s usually the tensioner that’s the culprit my 2000 EX 3.0 J30 V6 sedan before the notorious BX series tranny coughed out had 249,678 K miles and very little blow by still had original water pump and timing belt and tensioner no click during start no leaks from pump unlike my 2010 V6 J35 VCM BS it’s got a133,200 K miles and it’s tensioner is already clicking during startup and needs a valve adjustment Honda really messed up these engines with that stupid VCM and they knew it and after getting sued they stopped making them and I refuse to buy that turbo 4 crap they have now

I think its recommended 100k or 8 years. Personally I wouldn't, I just bought a 2008 with 85k...Think I'll do it early based on age

Yes the Honda service department would recommend that because they want money. Not really needed until 90k-100k unless it sounds like it needs to be done. Idk that’s from my experience
