Keep in mind that's about 10%of what needs to be removed to replace the timing belt.

I did a search for a 1998 and this came up...great video..but i dont think its what i was looking for...thanks metatags
I guess Honda's engineers figured that they assembled such a reliable car that it doesn't matter that 95% of all serviceable items will be 95% inaccessible.
I actually thought this was designed with the maintenance in mind, I didn’t have a problem with it being inaccessible.
Longitudinal vs transverse engine mounting is my main point. It's nice when the front of the engine is accessible. If you poke around under the hood of a Mercedes M111, M112, or M272 as a few examples, then go back to this J Series, you'd see what I mean.
Still love the J Series, but the labor for this mandatory timing belt job is more intense/time consuming than anything I'll ever have to do on my Benz by a long shot.

@@mrdave777 sure! Using my Benz as an example, I can get to any belt driven components in minutes. All belt driven components on the J series are buried awkwardly in the passenger side (besides ps pump).
The valve cover & all associated gaskets job is a joke on this thing. The rear bank is 90% inaccessible & there is literally millimeters of clearance even with everything moved out of the way that can be moved.
'07-'08 TL's (different from '04-'06) have 3 engine mounts & 2 trans mounts. 1 of the trans mounts requires more components to be removed than ALL 3 mounts (2 engine, 1 trans) than on my Benz. One of the TL's trans mounts ('07-'08) requires the SUBFRAME to be removed. 1 of the 5 TL mounts costs almost twice of what all 3 of my Benz mounts cost. 1 of the TL's genuine ignition coils cost more than all 6 of my Benz coils, which can be removed in less than 10 mins. On the TL, strut brace & coolant overflow has to be removed & careful for endless brittle hoses & wiring harnesses due to tremendous heat soak under these rats nests of an engine bay.
(Not just this car), but having to remove front passenger wheel to get to the oil filter is a joke. Front & center on the Benz, accessible in about 30 seconds.
Mandatory timing belt job is more laborious than anything I'll ever do on my Benz as previously mentioned, & the water pump is internal, being driven by the timing belt. Mine, (you guessed it) accessible in minutes right in front.
Rear seats have to be removed for rear struts/shocks. A 10 yr old child could do rear shocks on my Benz in less than a few hrs. There's more I'm sure I'm forgetting, but you get it! Still love them though.

Just bought a 2000 tl w 212k miles. No sticker about when or if ever changed. Was told 1500$ to change it. I wasn’t given the option to have the belt checked, though that was the biggest concern. I don’t have the money to fix.

Thanks for the video. An excellent way to inspect the condition of the belt. What about how to inspect the timing belt hydraulic tensioner that is located deeper and lower to the left?
you'll probably have to jack the car up and pull the wheel that way you can get to it, you might also have to pull some trim
The tension of the belt can be checked by removing the inspection cover, grabbing the belt and checking for slop. If there's any slack the belt tensioner is shot. The timing belt should be very tight.
The bolt behind the serpentine belt tensioner is a b***h to remove and replace. I removed the wire clamp near the alternator, lifted the power steering reservoir out of its bracket (no tools required) and spent 30 minutes rotating that bolt about 15 degrees each time. You only have about 3-4 inches of wrench rotating room each stroke. I removed the serpentine belt to get the inspection cover off. After inspecting the timing belt, I tried to install the 5 cover bolts with the serpentine belt off and got hung up again on the same bolt behind the tensioner, what the heck. Then I realized with the serpentine belt removed the tensioner moves forward and blocks that bolt hole more than before the belt was released. Put the belt back on and had more room to get the wrench on that bolt. I used a wrench with a mild offset. The true double offset wrench did not clear the inside of the tensioner. To get even more clearance between the tensioner and the bolt, you could put a longer wrench or breaker bar on the tensioner, push the tensioner as far back as it will travel, and take some 12 gauge wire and double wind that wire around the wrench handle and secure it to the strut brace in front of the firewall. Realize you have a loaded catapult aimed at you while you work that bolt back in!!

Mi auto es un Acura RL 2007 y pues en ese lugar hace un ruido, suena a tornillos sueltos, no es muy fuerte pero si lo hace, mi pregunta es si ese sonido seria por la cadena de tiempo.
Can't you just pull off the rubber inspection plug on the cover ? then use a mirror? Also, if you do pull the cover, check the tension.
I don't know why the inspection hole is there because you can't see the belt teeth through hole
@@specagent999 those holes are there for align timing of the engine and for valves adjustment. Through the first cover hole, as you turn the engine via camshaft by hand, you'll see gears 1,4,2,5,3,6.
my 06 tl has only 55k on it so I guess the belt will be fine.They charge 800-1000$ to install the timing belt kit
Some people say and the manual says change it every 7 years? My 2012 tl has 48,000 miles on it idk if I should change it
what kind of offset wrench is it? i checked amazon and they having different ones, 35 degrees, 60 degrees. Which did you use? Thanks in advance!
Good question. Craftsman 45 degree offset wrench. The set I have is part #944350.
By doing this does this mean that you don’t need to go by with the 100k interval?
I would replace it to be on the safe side. This vehicle has 75k miles.
You can also remove the rear timing belt cover without having to remove the drive belt. FYI
will this work on my 2002 tl
It's a different engine but similar.
Its same motor the 3.2 not sure about type s i know its all same motor an all but idk what else has to be done

YES THE TIMING BELT IS IN A VERY GOOD CONDITION, AND THAT TIMING BELT IS GOING TO TAKE YEARS TO REPLACE IT,

well you just remove like 3 covers … and an engine mount, and a hydraulic tensioner bolt, and all the coolant
I called the Acura dealer bc I'm considering buying a 2006 TL but want the timing belt inspected. The service man said it was "internal" to the engine would cannot easily be inspected. Thanks for verifying I'm not insane and they are full of sh!t.

Thanks for this video.Its just what i needed.I didnt trust taking it for a mechanic to check it for me and they will tell me i need the belt replaced when it doesnt or charge me alot just to check it.I'll probably mark the belt with paint for the cranks.

Love ur vids man,only thing on this one I was looking for a what to look for when the covers off, like tension on the belt,the hydrologic tensioner because I have ALOT of Clacking going on my MDX ,it's not the serpentine or any drive pulleys I checked,it's coming from the timing area I just have to get up the sack to start this HUGE job I got coming my way and I'm nervous

look for really dry or small cracks on the teeth
Belt should be tight, if there's any slop it's worn out or your timing belt tensioner is worn out and a timing belt service is needed.
Thank you for posting this video. I just had a service advisor mansplain that my engine needed to be taken apart to get to my timing belt and was a 5-6 hour service after I told him my mechanic said my belt needed to be replaced..I show them this video and he didn’t know what to say
This video is just an inspection its not how you replace a timing belt

use an impact wrench for the crankshaft bolt
Seems logical tires are made of steel and rubber, so why not a timing belt?
Sadly, there are no 'slick' timing belts for die-hard racers.

U can tell just that engine is in such good shape belt looked like new. My 06 TL has 200k km the engine paint it chipped and plastics look much worse and I don’t know if the belt was even replaced so very helpful vid.

Will this procedure to move the timing belt work for the 07 - 08 TL as well? My concern is that the starters on these cars will continue to crank without holding the key to start position. Thanks.
Yes. They are the exact same car
@@onefortysixam9713 Yes, same car, but not the same starter. 07-08 starters will keep cranking on it's own even if you don't hold the key in the start position.
My car started making a clicking noise every time on every cold start.what do you think in causing that?

Could be your timing belt tensioner, I’d get that checked ASAP before you destroy your engine.
Great video. Not sure if I'm right here but if that's the original timing belt its 12 years old. Does acura have a mileage and age replacement schedule on it or do you mainly go by visual inspection once the age schedule has been met but not the mileage? It's nice to know rubber timing belts are lasting so long.
They recommend on changing the belt every 60k miles in very hot climates and very cold climates. Otherwise, inspect for cracks, oil, coolant, etc.

Wish I could find the TSB # but my service manual said change the belt at 3yrs or 60k on my 05. Honda increased it to 5yrs or 100k. BUT recommended changing all the idler pulleys, tensioner and w/p as well, as a kit. Mine is close at 193k. It was done at 115k last time. They also say to reset the valve lash each time after a belt replacement, fyi.
Recommended every 7 years or 100k with new tensioner, water pump,valve adjustment, spark plugs and drive belt replacement aka “Minder 4” service

$800 - $1200 includes water pump, seal, tensioner, idler, and possibly spark plugs.
@@specagent999 Thanks for the reply, would you suggest I do it with 40k miles? I live in California and have had 2 mechanics say to not waste my $ because it has a hydraulic tensioner which preserves the belt.

I have 2012 acura tl and I called my local acura dealer they want 1100 dollars to do it for me they claim water pump drive belt timing belt needs to be all replaced I just think it's insane how much they want.
That’s what comes with owning a car I need to change mine as well but I’d rather pay than have no car 🚗
