- Mary is passionate about education. More than that, she believes girls should be in a classroom, and never walking down an aisle until they ready to be married. She tells of her journey to get an education and to eventually to become a teacher, helping to nurture and shape the minds of other young refugees. (Recorded at TEDxKakumaCamp on June 9, 2018) Mary Maker is South Sudanese refugee who is both a former teacher and current student on a path to university. She is a firm believer in the power of education as a transformative tool for peace-building and rebuilding lives. After fleeing South Sudan’s conflict as a child, she found solace and hope in education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I can't imagine being told, "You're going to lose your market value, the more educated you become." Thank God Mary and her sisters pushed past all of that negative talk.
