  • Millions of refugees have fled conflict and persecution around the world. Nujeen Mustafa asks us not to see them as numbers, but human beings. In a moving and humorous talk, she tells of her own epic and dangerous journey from Syria to Europe in a wheelchair, concluding that refugees need compassion as much as shelter.
Nujeen Mustafa is a young refugee from Aleppo, Syria. She has cerebral palsy and cannot walk but this did not stop her braving inconceivable odds to travel in her wheelchair from Syria in search of a new life.
“She is our hero. Everyone must read her story. She will inspire you.” Malala Yousafzai.
Her story is told in Christina Lamb’s best selling book Nujeen; One Girl’s Incredible Journey from War-torn Syria in a Wheelchair. www.amazon.co....
At TEDxExeter 2017 our speakers explored ideas of HOPE - not wishing, not optimism, but hope - to challenge us and encourage us to keep moving forward to create a better world.

She is willing to get on that stage in front of everyone and talk , knowing she will face judgement. You won't even upload a profile picture . Guess who gets my respect.

@ladymarcasite; That is some BS. She is going to be judged? No one dares to judge an adorable, crippled girl without looking like a moster. She is coached to say just the right thing, and sound sweet and intelligent and harmless. You know who has my respect because he stood up against the entrenched liberals in Hollywood, the media, and Washingtone, and knew he would be unfairly judged and smeared every which way, and that includes people saying horrid things about his wife and ten year old son? Trump. He is actually doing what you say. She is just looking cute, and saying the right things, and is totally untouchable.

She probably got paid....The speech still falls well short of paying her way in our society...
Her medical bills won't be cheap. Will you be paying ladymarcasite??????? I don't think so....who would want your respect.....

No kidding. When someone boasts his vast vocabulary with the phrase, “I got the best words.” It’s pretty clear the only person he’s dumbing it down for is himself.
And unlike Trump, this young lady is charming, inspiring and insightful. For me, listening to her speak is the antithesis of listening to trump ramble.

A very moving, powerful and personal talk from someone so young. Nujeen and her family had to take risks and make sacrifices on their perilous journey, we owe it to them to share their story widely and help to bring about a more compassionate approach to people fleeing dangerous lands. As Nujeen says, different is not dangerous.

Nujeen, welcome to Britain, I only wish I could make some people - who deserve no more acknowledgment than that - go through a tiny fraction of some of the things you've been through, so that they could value our security and safety, not to mention compassion as a fundamental aspect of what it means to be human, a little - a lot - more.

This is such an important talk, and some of the very unfortunate comments below demonstrate why it is so important to give everyone a voice. She is very brave to share her story with us and I for one am thankful to have the opportunity to hear her message. We are all part of humankind and we need dialogue to overcome the challenges we have created for ourselves. Thank you Nujeen for speaking so bravely and openly. Long may it continue

Sometimes we seem to lose track of the most important things in life. Compassion is really at the core of humanity - without it, life is a dark place indeed. Putting ourselves in other people's shoes is basic; something so simple yet so easily forgotten, so thank you, Nujeen, for the reminder, and thank you for your courage.

I went to the TEDx talk a few months ago and have recently finished reading her book 'A Girl From Aleppo'. She is a hero to have gone through so much and still have such a positive attitude to life. All politicians must read it and they will be touched as to how badly refugees are treated by countries and the traumatic life threatening conditions that refugees face and will face. You can't send them back to Syria where so many shocking events happened as mentioned in her book and if we welcomed them, there would be no problems because the Dublin regulation causes refugees to be stuck in the first country they arrive in where they get fingerprinted in which means higher concentration of refugees in countries like Italy. If we accepted refugees with open arms, there would be less hate crime and as Nujeen said, the amount of refugees that came in 2015 are only 0.2% of Europe's 500 million population. They are all human beings: doctors, lawyers, businesspeople and many other highly qualified individuals. Sadly, many Europeans see them as a huge number of useless individuals who overpopulate our countries. Nujeen is my hero and I hope that she will get the chance to do her dream job of an astronaut and continues to inspire many people with her refreshing view of the world and continues to collect interesting facts.

Hey Nujeen! Im a swedish boy of swedish origin. I want to learn to speak arabic, which is very uncommon for people like me. When ive learnt arabic i will use it to fight racism by speaking it infront of people who are not used to hearing it (espiecally not spoken by a swede). Then i will use it to get to know new people, learn new things from their culture and help people adapt to sweden, to the best of my abilities. I read your book and i think its really cool, youre one of my idols. Keep on lovin yourself, best of luck// marcus

Nujeen Mustafa is really a very brave soul. She represents countless people who have to leave their houses to live as refugees. Their suffering is indescribable.
Our life is so short....It's strange why there are wars .....bring so much destruction... Let peace returns n these people have no fear .....
    Wars are absurd.

Unrelated note, her English vocabulary and grammar are VERY impressive considering how long she’s been learning English.
She seems like such an amazing young lady, and it’s wonderful that she’s speaking up about these issues. I can’t imagine having to leave my home under the threat of death and the only safe place being a country where people constantly call me a parasite to the system. Refugees don’t deserve the prejudice they receive.
