I've been playing 40+ years and I have not had this explained to me this well. I feel like kicking myself in the ass. My buttered ass. Between the right and left strokes. Without a muffler.
What a brilliant, brilliant drum teacher you are! Your energy and explanations are so inspirational and comprehensible. I'm now 60 and have played drums since I was a young kid. Played professionally for 15 years but I haven't played much for the last 20 years (except on my thighs and various pillows). I'm regularly checking out drummers here on RUclips to get inspired and I found you, and what a great source of inspiration you are! To the degree that I'm now off to my favorite drum store to buy me a great sounding kit and a fine selection of my favorite cymbals. So in a few hours, after having rigged up and tuned the drums in my basement I'll be banging away again. Thanks a million! Kind regards from Stockholm, Sweden.
Dude Mike. I remember making an account on your site in 2008. I was inspired and loved seeing you teach way back when. Just rediscovered your stuff and wow how far you have come man! Your setup is so good - the site, videos, paperwork. It's all organized and sounds and looks incredible. Plus your teaching abilities. So good to see dude I'm glad you're doing this for musicians!
Sir as always You "launched" me into playing and trying new things behind the drums.Thank You!btw great video, i really apprecieate what You do and how passionate You are about teaching! If somebody asked me what's my biggest inspiration to play drums I would say that all of Mike's lessons. Please keep doing great job!I hope to see you in Poland again when the pandemic is over😊
Mike: This video explains to me exactly what I was trying to figure out for quite a while. And that in a comprehensible and fun way. Thank you. Next time I'm practicing I'm gonna try just this. You're one of the most fun to watch and educational drum teachers on YT that I have encountered in years. Keep it up, I think you're awesome! And one can feel your passion in what you're doing which makes up for a huge chunk of why watching your videos is fun and I don't feel schooled but I feel like somebody's actually trying to explain something to me. As you said in a different video: you educate, you not only demonstrate. Kudos and respect. Cheers!
Thanks Mike, at 52 I watch a lot but don't comment so much, but fair dinkum... 16th note trips in groups of 4!!! That was a total OF COURSE WHY NOT moment. I no longer think the world is flat.
My 3 favorite parts of this lesson 1. The ”Mikeshda"😁😁😁 2:40 2: The "should be copyrighted" statement on this channel😂😂😂 5:08 3. That facial expression before the crash 6:55 (Honorable mention - Sloppy jollopy😂😂) You're a whole mood Mike❤️❤️😂
I was having a hard time figuring the accents on the hands so for anyone struggling as well, replace ghost notes on snare with a tom hit and it'll give you more or less the same accent dynamic to get a hold of it. Pretty cool video!!
Great idea bro!! I got the sticking down and as a lefty I had to re write it left hand lead.. its the ghost notes and the dynamics of how this fill feels/sounds which is throwing me off...your way will help me
@@jamescaliendo1030 Awesome! Glad I could help :) I can figure out stickings pretty fast but dynamics always make me struggle, so I need to do stuff like this around the kit first.
Wow! Sixteen Roto-toms...LOL!!! Then again, that’s 10 short of Terry Bozzio’s 26 tom 8 kick drum set up with 2 snares and 53 cymbals (which look and sound amazing btw!). Thank you for sharing this. Your teaching is helpful and inspiring to me.
Mike, Elliott here from the website. Just wanted to say I love the approach and transparency in this video. No one else on RUclips is doing it like this. See you soon!
I love that one you drum so good me and my dad are a big fan our favorite video is the triple ghost it sounds so good me my dad and my pop pop all drum and my pop pop do his own concerts, but you are so good and your funny keep up the good work
Thank you for thinking of us , those who lay out money for these products , - how much will the internal muffler add to the cost. Companies will “add” things like this and jack the cost up a ton for a $3 part and minimal added labor
No worries at all. That’s what teachers are supposed to do. We had the price set at 499.99 before the muffler. I said if we can add it and stay at that same price I was all for it. Gretsch made it happen. They really are good folks.
For me it's those classic funk records with the hi-hat pshts carrying over into the next round. "ba-dam tsht, tsht, tsht, ba-dum." Not actually that difficult to pull off if you put in the time, but it's entirely magical and so versatile in how you can use a nice sizzling hi-hat. I don't think there is any greater feeling than getting the left foot/hi-hat coordination thing right, although it is always put into context by all the other parts you're playing before and after. I also am an incredibly huge fan of double splashes/crashes on the "e" and the "1". What a stupidly fun instrument to play.
Yo Mike... is this the same as the “Vespa”? I’ve been working on that for the last 6-9 months, but gotta say I’m totally understanding the thought process behind your “fills and groves”

There is indeed. I actually grabbed that ride from Memphis Drum Shop while shooting videos for mycymbal.com. As soon as I hit it I said “I don’t know who you have to call but I’m taking this ride home with me” LOL.
Doesn't the Groove start with a single kick first, which pushes that triple feel? Like krl - kkr - lkk - rlk - krl - kkr - lkk - rlk- K(with the big crash) ?
The fill starts and stays KKRL the entire time. I think you are asking a different question which is "If I need to see this written in groups of threes how would your write it?" The purpose of this lesson is to show how you can take groups of 4 that are commonly used in 16th notes and then put them into a triplet subdivision to give your basic ideas a bit of an advanced feel. I hope that helps :) 🍵🙏🍵
It does indeed. It works on mobile devices like phones and tablets as well as desktop and laptop computers. The only thing it doesn’t work on is TV’s. What type of device are you using to watch this video?

Hey Mike, can you do a video on not overplaying the chorus as opposed to the verse and bridge? Thanks!
Mike, you’re a fantastic teacher and entertaining. Thank you sharing. Plus your video production value is off the charts good.

What's the reason you have the beater on bass drum pedal where it's at? I always thought having it set as far up as possible would give better action.
I always use KKRLRL×4 but it did take a quite awhile for me to feel it as triplets! It's probably because I wasn't purposefully accenting anything...🤔
