Well it's officially 2022 and I would LOVE to know what type of videos you would like to see from me this year! More of the same? Snare reviews? VLOGs? All of the above? Let me know 🍵🙏🍵 Mike J - www.mikeslessons.com
Hi Mike, it’d be interesting if you post a video where you explain how to practice in general, regardless if it’s a groove rather than fills, etc., and your opinion about how to subdivide our time during practicing. Thank you
@@herrpauk Ahaha, i dont think so. But i am better then i started to play thanks to Mike videos. In Serbia you don't have so many educators for drums. I have masters degree in economy but drums are my hobby!
Damn right! If more people gave drumming the dedication that Frodo did to throwing that ring into the fires of Mt. Doom we would have an even greater community of drummers. LOL :)
Mike, just found one of your YT freebies... '2 grooves for 2022', yeah I know I am a little late to the party, but back to my reason for commenting. Besides your obvious hard earned skills and teaching ability, your humility, humour and lack of arrogance, (which is completely at odds with your abilities) held my attention to the end of the video. It has instilled in me a desire to try again to become a competent drummer. I am one of those high school concert band drummers, who after college moved onto family, other hobbies, and life in general. A few years ago (I am now in my 60's) I decided I was going to give it another shot. I bought a set of drums and I even tried some in person lessons for about 8 months. While this improved my very limited muscle memory and helped me develop as a drummer to some degree it didn't give me what I was looking for. (The fault was and is with me, not my teacher). After seeing this video I am going to go back at it, and if it takes me all of 2023 to get these grooves down, after seeing your videos (I also watched part of, so far, the Flow video) I feel more motivated than I have ever been, to try again. Thank You!
Started my online coarse with you last Monday. Even down due to a couple of sick days, I have learned more with your coarse than any other I've taken. At 67, teaching the old dog new tricks isn't always easy. You sir, never promise easy but, you promise growth if lots of practice is applied. I have never practiced more. Your methodology makes learning very enjoyable. Even if I do throw my sticks into the drywall every now and then! That being said... I'm actually learning some very cool new tricks!!! These two new grooves may be light years away for me but, I'm working em nonetheless! Thank you, Mike!!!
Mike, 45 plus year session, band and touring drummer AND I AM STILL LEARNING THINGS THANKS TO YOU! Thank you. Love your podcasts with Eddy. Please do not stop these great learning video and podcasts. I am telling as many people or drummers that I know to watch and listen to you. God bless drums!
Mr. Gadson is a game changer so he deserves respect whenever possible. As for the beater, it all just depends on the kick I'm playing. If it's wide open I play off and let the drum breath. This kick drum however has a pillow inside it so it would be absurd to play off the head and pretend like it actually did something, LOL. Much appreciated for the kind words Matt!
Happy New years to you Mike and i wish the same to you"re dog Juno...haha. For 2022 i would like to have more groove with cowbell...and what kind of shoes you have...so Nice...and again all the best for 2022.
I remember buying lessons via downloading them In the early days. Probably around 2006. I believe Mikes Wife/girlfriend was the person I was emailing when I had a problem. It was the very beginning of their online journey. Craz to see how great they grew.
Mike I’ve been watching your vids for about 3 years now and I’m so thankful that you are teaching. I consider you my teacher and appreciate all that you do for the drum community. Thanks for allowing me to embrace the suck and striving to be a better musician/ drummer at this craft. Keep doing what your doing, you are a true blessing!
Congratulations Mike. I was introduced to your videos in 2010 or so. The most significant thing that I have learned from you and it has changed my entire drumming mindset is this. There are not better and worse drummers, there are drummers at all different places along the path of drumming, and no matter where you are on that path, you can grow further along that path with diligent work and a commitment to stay the course no matter how long it takes. The other valuable thing that I have learned from you through the years is the importance of allowing your strong hand to teach the weak hand, and that weaknesses are not things to lament and feel like a loser about, but areas where you can grow dramatically and gain victory in. Thank you for the hours and energy that you pour into each of your videos, clinics, camps, and lessons Mike, you are a valuable part of the greater drum community and I am thankful for having found your channel. Happy New Year Mike and may exciting new opportunities fill your coming year.
I'll be back sometime in April because it'll take me that long to really play these grooves correctly. But that's the great thing about drums. We, or at least I, never run out of things to practice. 🥁❤
I think you're one of the Greatest Drummers I've Ever Seen in my life. You have the Greatest Attitude about the way you Speak!! You have it All ! I'm from Cranbrook BC. I have a Drum Solo on RUclips. Firecrackers by Albert the Lizard
That first groove is perfectly in line with what I'm working on at the moment. The great Jeff Randall sent me down a rabbit hole to explore ghost notes over bass drum notes. And ghost notes before and after the backbeat. I'm set for the year.
Thank you for this. As a hack drummer, by biggest issue (other than timing) is my ability to play quickly with my right hand like this. I'm going to give this a shot and see how much it helps. Love your content and your passion.
Yep, I've been following you almost from your first videos. It's been really fun. 🤗 The paradiddle groove is the one i might be able to learn during this year. But the other won't happen this year.
“Really fellowship with it.” You been around Will Kennedy too much! 😂 Actually, nobody can be around Will enough! I hope to see both of you in Alabama again this coming August!
EY YO MIKEY! Thanks for all the videos, you've helped me transition from a decent drummer to a more than decent drummer with spice. The spice makes everything nice my friend! Cheers! PS, I hope you break down that intro groove. I need more samba/latin grooves in my life.
Excellent grooves Mike. Especially the 2nd one. I learned about "stepping the hihat" through my journey in Chaffee's method and books. It's a very overlooked tool in developing interesting time functioning grooves. It opened a whole other way of expression on the kit for me. I hope other players take note of what you did in that second groove and use it as stepping stone for further exploration of "spicing" up their own creations. As an aside, I urge players to start a groove or beat, not with your bass drum foot, but with your hihat foot and see where that leads you.
Paradiddle Diddle right hand ride cymbal left hand on ragtime the turtles on the floor time in the snare drum that was I remember that I still use that not matter what castration but but I've been there since the beginning thank you for everything Mike
That first groove is amazing. I can do everything with the ghost notes and bass while keeping 16th on the right, my only struggle is keeping those drags consistent 😔
2 really cool grooves Mike! I learned a slightly different version of your paradiddle diddle groove from Bill Bruford a few years back but I love both of these awesom! I’ll be using both asap 😎
The first video I watched from you was the fly to me cover where you explained the songo drumbeat. I play that same rythm to this day. Happy new year!! #Godbless
Great video Mike! And yes! What a journey it has been and hopefully will continue to be for a long time! You're one of the best educators out there and truly a down right inspiration. I'm definitely going to have to try these two out later when I can get to the kit 😁
You made an interesting comment about having trouble with right hand speed, but I actually seem to be having that problem with my left hand! Hint, I like to focus on metal (like to have fun with Ragae and hip hop though). Para diddle diddles are ok, I feel like maybe just putting in a lot of double stroke work would help me here? Hilarious... as I'm typing this the groove #2 was what I was going to say I've been practicing... haha I think I'll keep it going on groove 2, that one is super fun to place kicks in different spots. Thank you for everything you do for us!!!
Hello, I have really bad tinnitus and I think it’s from jaw misalignment or Tmj I think it’s called. It’s tough dealing with it and still playing 10 min a day. Thank you for your videos man.
I almost played an identical version of the first Groove in a Song but with 8th notes on the hihat but i will love to play it with the 16th note hihat and will focus on the concistency of the acents maybe it will give the song a new vibe ;-)
Happy New Year Mike. Thank you for everything you do for us dude. Loving both the grooves and will try to follow them & then build my version. Although the paradiddle diddle groove is extremely close to one you posted about four years ago, I think. Which I’m still failing to pull together, yet I’m still pushing it through and enjoying. Are you coming to the UK in 2022?
I've posted everything at least 5 times, LOL! But no matter how many times I post it, it shan't change the amount of folks who still need to practice it :)
I’m totally a lift the right arm too high when playing 16s on the hats on two and four haha. Been cognizant of it for a couple years but haven’t focused on fixing it I guess. I should probably focus on it because it’s a big deal.
Regarding the first 20 seconds. I don't hear the exact same thing each bar but I think this is representative of the feel - RH = Cowbell, LH = Snare. RLRR LRLR RLRL LRLL - I like playing it with snare accents on beats 2 and the E of count 3, feeling the groove as a repeated 5 note phrase RLRRL RLRRL followed by a repeated 3 note phrase RLL RLL
Did you change your overhead mic? This one looks a little bit different. Still drums sound great:) definitely the best sounding drum channel on RUclips!
There is a video simple to the double bass with 1 foot video. It was on the high hats though. It was a double and then close the high hat to make a note. Allows to play high hats realm fast. Can’t find it though. I’ve watched you since then though!!!

The vlogs were really cool! I'd love more of those.
All of the above, but especially the vlogs. Super fun. Happy New Year Mike!
Gear related or behind the scenes at clinic Vlogs. Especially the UK drum show 👍👍
Personally lots more videos like this. It did wonders for me as a drummer without a primarily fundamental background. Thank you so much.
Hi Mike, it’d be interesting if you post a video where you explain how to practice in general, regardless if it’s a groove rather than fills, etc., and your opinion about how to subdivide our time during practicing.

You as well brother! See you on the 15th at Nelson's?
@@mikeslessons Wish I could! I’m gigging that night.

Bro I’ve been following you since I’m in high school. I’m now married with kids and am a band director myself. Thank you 😊
My first MJ video was how to do the windmill! I was hooked ever since. That was years ago.
Love that Broadkaster man. That thing is beautiful!!!!!
i remember seeing the first vid and thinking... wow!! thank youuuu!!!!

Deep respect for calling it a Gadson groove and for not being afraid to bury the beater in spite of the current trend.

The "Ted Lasso" of ANYTHING is a compliment and it's highly appreciated... except I love TEA! 🍵😂🍵😂
Reminds me of the "Fool in the Rain" shuffle. Just a little modified. Killer groove though!
