I remember watching Mike's lessons over a decade ago, when it looked like it was done in Windows Movie Maker. Cool to see how much his channel and teaching style has evolved.
I discovered your channel during the early part of covid. I'm a bass player who has moved back to drums after 30 years of thumping. I now play drums in a cover band after mostly writing and playing original material. I second another comment on here. I, too, learn more from 5 mins. of your videos than from anywhere else.
i saw him randomly in youtube when i was looking for improving my foot speed, at this day is one of the most inspiring persons i ever saw! cool Mike!!! the best teacher!
Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!! Your videos are so inspiring. Every time you do one of these videos it does exactly what you intended and I go straight to my kit and play rhythms I never would have come up with on my own. I learn more from your 5 min videos than I do from anywhere else.
At 4:13 your stick control and loose technique similar to jazz. Able to flow even at high speeds with control, but without squeezing as hard as you can.
You probably dont give a shit but does any of you know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
@Dash Parker thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
As a native/resident of southern Louisiana, I always enjoy how silly you get about a fill/groove and then reference food! The way to a mans heart is through his stomach. Please keep these tasty morsels coming our way!
Sir, your ways of teaching and video editing are really something else. I'm really digging these videos and I admire your playing and enthousiastic way of speaking! Thank you🙏🏼
DrDrewdude 🤣 Duuude! He laid into that groove & I lost it! Not 30 minutes earlier, I drumming on the coffee table (just paradiddles & stuff) & getting really annoyed that I wasn’t coming up with anything creative.
Mike. You always give me something to think about in playing grooves and fills and just being creative. Thanks so much man. These lessons really help my in my development.
Hey mike. Great video - the 4 note changes, so subtle yet so effective. I agree with a lot of the people with regards to the fills. Nice lead ins and lead outs. It would be a tremendous learning experience for all of us if you could do a video. Thank you.
I am your biggest fan...want to attend your camp once in life...i am from India...i love ur lessons....🙏🙏🔥❤️ I wud like to see 9/8 or 11/8 timings break down !!
Yeah .... I really do have something I would like you to teach (and help me out with)...... One handed 16th's on the hat. And fitting it into a groove. Cheers man.
Solid, sensible tips as always. We where delighted to be in your presence at Lab Camp. Personally, it was a great experience to watch you teach, as a teacher myself i learned sooo much, really ...Also, great job on the name pronounciation, nailed it! :)
Mike, it's amusing when you play a bit and say that doesn't sound bad. With your feel everything sounds perfect. I mean you could play a four on the floor without any base drum and it still would sound awesome :-)
Rad lesson man! That paradiddle groove was lit! Breaking down the technique for getting that neat difference between the accents and soft notes would be cool. Or how to turn something like a paradiddle into a groove, like where to put accents and alternative places to put accents on something more standard.
Already done my friend. I have 2 full courses (12 lessons) on Mikeslessons.com called "Practical Applications for Rudiments" Hope this helps www.mikeslessons.com/courses/rudiments-technique
Yea Mike. I had to go next door. It was a blast. Then I went to the end of the block. And we all had such a blast. Oh yea didint you go get greased or something? Lol. Ok now get to the lesson big boy. Thanks a bunch
Happy new year Mike - it’s been a while but lots of changes - Greece def on the map of some of those changes - hit me up anytime u go or if ya wana go to Greece w our group there is a ton to see while you’re there and we incorporate yoga rock climbing and overall radness - stoked u got to go and of course u sound great as always ✌🏽
A while ago you did a vid about snare practice or a rudiment and then you mentioned that it would sound rad over a Brazilian baion foot ostinato. Could you go over a couple hand patterns to put over an ostinato? ✌🏻❤️💪🏻
Respected Sir, you are simply crazy, love you so much............and the groove @ 2.55 is simply amazing, thanks a ton for your lessons. Someday in my life would definitely love to meet you, keeping my fingers crossed. In the end you are asking us to give you the links and what to break down while you are improvising, let me share this with you, I see most of your videos and actually learn a lot, so while you are improvising I listen to you so carefully that now somewhat slowly I've started understanding the musical language you are speaking through your drumming, for example you were playing the herta fills @4.05 followed by a paradiddle, please correct me if I am wrong. Hope I'am on the right path and not miss-leaded. With lots of love, see you soon. Take care and I will too, just to see you............
Hey Mark, thanks so much for the kind words my friend. That really meant a lot. I also glad to hear that my style is starting to become a language that you can understand. As far as what I did at @4:05, you're not far off. I will give you a hint, it started with a hi-hat close on 1, immediately followed by 2 (right hand lead) Swiss triplets :) Mike J - www.mikeslessons.com
I remember watching Mike's lessons over a decade ago, when it looked like it was done in Windows Movie Maker. Cool to see how much his channel and teaching style has evolved.
This 60 year old musician is so impressed with Mr. Johnston's teaching style ! Amazing ! I love this guy! Peace from Detroit MI.

Listen, you're awesome. I am glad that you found your destiny as a teacher and can share this supernatural energy with us.
Wow, what an incredibly kind thing to say. Thank you 🙏
Four notes maybe but a lifetime of advice. An exemplar of time functioning grooves without the endless padding of study materials. 👍
What a great comment to wake up to this morning. Thanks for the positivity boost!
Mike J - www.mikeslessons.com
Excellent, simple lesson for expanding without extra clutter. Like a pro once told me when playing to a song, "Less is more." 🤯
Thanks so much Matt, I really appreciate that man.

Mike J - www.mikeslessons.com
3:37 LOL I love the Southern Paradiddle
@alexander einstein sounds close but he did something toward the end of the fill that sounds really cool that he doesnt explain in the vid you posted
As a beginner, I could be wrong but it sounds like a paradiddle diddle 2x then "something"(lol) and then another paradiddle diddle -AABA fill.
ratamacue i tihnk, like the steve gadd aja fills
Just got off from band practice. Feeling stuck on the same grooves like you said & this is exactly what I needed. Thanks & stay awesome!

I struggle with this a lot. Great value in this vid. Dope kit as well.
At 4:13 your stick control and loose technique similar to jazz. Able to flow even at high speeds with control, but without squeezing as hard as you can.

Breaking down the technique for getting that neat difference between the accents and soft notes would be cool. Or how to turn something like a paradiddle into a groove, like where to put accents and alternative places to put accents on something more standard.
